Greetings and welcome to the 2026 Spring/Summer edition of The Babble. In the following pages, you will hear from BHGC’s management team regarding 2026 events and various club updates. The Board of Governors has been quite busy the last few months leading our active 2026 committees.
As you know, we are saying goodbye to Chris Bonvie. We will have a farewell reception for Chris on June 17 where I hope you will join me in thanking him for his service to Brook Hollow. We are now ably led by interim General Manager Craig Vigil, and our Search Committee is collaborating with our executive search firm, The Club Council. Thank you to Bruce Sammis and our search committee for their work on this search process.
Our Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee has been very active this year. On the real estate side, the Club recently closed a second acquisition towards our goal of owning all 9.34 acres of contiguous undeveloped land across Brookhollow Road. We continue to engage with the City regarding the closure of Brookhollow Road in order to maximize the Club’s utility of the newly acquired land. Given the rapid growth of the City west of Love Field, I cannot overstate the importance of this land acquisition to Brook Hollow’s long-term future.
Additionally, the Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee has been hard at work evaluating options for improving our clubhouse consistent with prior membership surveys and ongoing member input. No decisions have been made, but we are looking at all options including small, medium, and large renovation scenarios measured against the cost and benefits of a new clubhouse. We know how critically important this process and project is to every member and, rest assured, we intend to listen to the membership as we determine the best path forward. I have a saying that I like that applies here: “We are proceeding slowly as fast as we possibly can.” Please be on the lookout for open focus group discussions later this year, where we will seek member engagement and solicit feedback on these multiple scenarios, as well as discuss future capital projects and needs at the Club.
Our golf course remains in immaculate condition. The additional scrub areas and bunkering between holes 3 and 13, and between 11 and 17, are complete and growing in nicely. Thanks to Matt Wilson and his staff, we have one of the best golf courses in the Southwest, and many say the best in Texas.
Racquets have been very busy recently completing the Spring events for Ladies TCD, Ladies Pickleball, Mixed Pickleball, and our Men’s Maycourt Leagues. It has been a great season as we have seen growth in member participation in all areas of our racquets programming.
Our annual all-member President’s reception in January is often the highlight event of the year. It is a time where we come together to celebrate our common bond as members of our great Club. The event is such a hit that I’m pleased to share we are going to do it twice this year! Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 30 for the first-ever, “second” all-member party, The Buxton Bash.
Brook Hollow is a special place where we are fortunate to have so many members willing to serve our Club. Our combination of committee and staff-led management distinguishes our Club and, to me, is the “secret sauce” to our culture. Thank you to every member of our wonderful staff and every member of our Club for all that you do to make Brook Hollow culture so extraordinary. I hope that each of you has a wonderful Spring and Summer and enjoy all that Brook Hollow has to offer.

Chris Bonvie, Brook Hollow’s general manager, has decided to move on from his role, with his last day being June 22, 2026. He has accepted the general manager position at La Jolla Country Club in La Jolla, California. Chris joined Brook Hollow seven and a half years ago, following long-time general manager Dale Miller. Chris has done an incredible job maintaining and enhancing the member experience across all areas, and we’re truly grateful for his many contributions to the club.

CELEBRATING MORRIS’ 46 YEARS AT BROOK HOLLOW GOLF CLUB
After 46 years of dedicated service, Brook Hollow Golf Club proudly celebrates Morris Black, Jr. as he retires from his role as Men’s Locker Room Manager.
For nearly half a century, Morris has been a familiar face to generations of members and staff, known for his unique sense of humor, positive energy, and unwavering commitment to making everyone feel welcome.
Over the years, Morris created countless memories at the club. One of his favorites was the time he accidentally flooded the whirlpool—a story that still gets plenty of laughs today.
Outside of work, Morris enjoys staying active by going to the gym, taking walks at the park, and trying new restaurants with his family. Most importantly, he has really enjoyed just being “Pawpaw” and spending time with his four daughters, five grandchildren, and great-grandchild. When asked what advice he would give to his coworkers, Morris simply said, “Just be yourself.”
Brook Hollow Golf Club extends its heartfelt gratitude to Morris for his 46 years of dedication, friendship, and service. His presence will be deeply missed, and his legacy will always remain part of the club’s story.

RED, WHITE & BROOK HOLLOW: THE LEGACY OF THE PEPPERMINT STICK
The Peppermint Stick is the club’s longeststanding special event. Since 1960, the club’s signature member-guest golf tournament has generated visual markers that capture the spirit and identity of our club. The event’s relics and photographs reflect almost seven decades of style on Harry Hines Boulevard. The second place name choice, “The Hoot‘n Hollow,” was mercifully dismissed.
The Peppermint Stick boldly incorporates colors in red and white—a huge departure from golf’s usual earth-tones of the early 1960s. Players were expected to conduct their play in red and white attire, with caps to match. The tournament produced a wide array of unique illustrations. Beaded badges on red blazers identifying the tournament committee and the whimsical golfing man who appeared on the first tournament logo are among the best. Every year is different, and fun is always the order of the day.
The Peppermint Stick’s most amazing artifact may be a custom sand wedge, produced by the Ben Hogan Company in 1965 under Mr. Hogan’s direct supervision. Two examples appear in a glass case by the front door of the Pro Shop. A custom leather grip in red and white, can be seen on the near-mint example, while long-time member Arthur White’s wedge (with its browned grip) reflects almost 60 years of weekly use.
Peppermint Stick memorabilia offers shorthand representations of club history and shared experiences. As the outstanding tournament continues with fresh ideas, the event’s enduring contribution to Brook Hollow’s heritage is unsurpassed.

Course Enhancement Update: Restoration is Complete
We are pleased to share the completion of our recent enhancements to Holes 3, 13, 11, and 17. Led by Keith Foster and his team, this project focused on restoring elements of A.W. Tillinghast’s original design.
Work between Holes 3 and 13 focused on defining and separating the two corridors by adding a new native area incorporating natural bunkering, coastal bermuda, bluestem grass, and Texas sage plants. Keith selected three pines from 11 and 17 that were transplanted to shape the native space, and three new Red Oaks were introduced near the 13th tee to create separation of holes 13 and 3 from the tee. All fairway bunker sand lines were raised for better visibility from the 3 tee.
Between Holes 11 and 17, the history of the original bunkering was evident during excavation, when the native sand was uncovered. This discovery helped guide the reestablishment of native bunkering in the area. The removal of several pine trees opened the corridor both visually and strategically, creating a more natural transition from fairway to native areas.
Keith Foster’s team led the excavation, final shaping, and drainage while our staff helped with sod installation, moving and adjusting irrigation, installing native grasses and sage plants, and preparing the final details during the establishment process. We look forward to watching these areas continue to mature and appreciate your patience as the new turf and native areas establish.

Faces of the Golf Operation: Staff Update
In my role, I have the privilege of recruiting, building, and developing a team of golf professionals dedicated to enhancing both our operation and the member experience. Over the past 12 months, you’ve likely noticed some new faces, while we’ve also proudly seen three assistants and one assistant-intraining advance into Head Professional roles and other elevated career opportunities.
With our most recent staff opening, I am excited to announce the addition of Patrick Mann from Bent Tree Country Club as our newest Assistant Golf Professional. Patrick will make an immediate impact, and I look forward to you getting to know him on and off the course.
He joins other recent additions to our team from last year, including Eric Dye, formerly of Dallas Athletic Club and originally from Michigan, and Garrett Granlund, who brings experience from clubs in Arizona and Washington.
In addition to our assistants, we prioritize developing future professionals. Through our Assistants-in-Training program, you will regularly see Sean Sullivan, formerly of TPC Riverbend in Ohio, and Sofia Maese, who is leaving a career in finance to enter the career path of the Golf Industry as a PGA Professional. Both are or will be working through the PGA Associate program and are integral members of our golf shop and member service team.
With these new additions, we will continue encouraging our professionals to play regularly with the membership. Now that you know our team, we invite you to take the next step—call the Golf Shop, add one of our PGA professionals to your regular game, and enjoy the experience. I look forward to playing with many of you this year.

Course Records at Brook Hollow: Could Your Next Round Be One?
As many of you know, true course records are hard to achieve, particularly at Brook Hollow. Often this is due to players hitting two balls off of Hole 1 tee, prioritizing a wolf game, or just not submitting a verified scorecard. A record score must be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf, with every hole completed (no conceded putts), and the scorecard submitted to the professional staff.
Last October, Cody Gribble posted a new record of 62 (-8) from the I Tee markers to establish that professional course record. While this past January,
Will Zalatoris also set a new professional mark from the Tillinghast Tee with a 61 (-9). Both rounds were flawless, bogey-free performances deserving of the record books.
With potential unknown records waiting, we are always looking to update our amateur record board. The next time you tee it up, go for the record, holing everything out, and submit your score. You may find yourself closer to Brook Hollow history than you think.
Caddie Program Highlights: New Leadership Under Andrew Barone
We are pleased to welcome Andrew Barone as our new Caddie Manager through our contract with CaddieMaster. Andrew has over 10 years of golf industry experience. Before joining CaddieMaster he worked at Fields Ranch. Prior to his golf career, he served 15 years in the United States Marine Corps, including two combat tours in Iraq. Andrew brings great leadership and energy to our caddie program.
After 6 years of growth, we are fortunate to have both long-tenured and emerging new talent in our caddie yard, giving members the opportunity to build new relationships and develop a trusted list of preferred caddies to meet their golfing needs.
As the program continues to grow, we’re building a strong “request culture” around trusted caddie relationships. With so much talent in the yard, booking ahead through the Golf Shop or CaddieMaster is the best way to secure your go-to caddie for your next round.

Understanding the Difference: Fairway Bunkers vs. Native Waste Areas
At Brook Hollow, the visual character of our golf course is shaped by both its classic fairway bunkers and expansive native waste areas. While they may appear similar, they are maintained and played very differently. Understanding those differences can help golfers better navigate the course and avoid unnecessary penalties.
Our fairway bunkers, all 116 of them across the golf course, are fully maintained and regularly raked, with rakes provided beside each bunker to help preserve consistent playing conditions for all players. Under the USGA Rules of Golf, bunkers are classified as a “special area of the course,” meaning players may not deliberately touch the sand with their club immediately in front of or behind the ball, ground the club during practice swings, or test the condition of the sand before the stroke (Rule 12.2).
Native waste areas, however, are considered part of the “general area” and are intentionally left more natural in appearance and conditioning. These areas may contain footprints, exposed sand, sand pockets, and changing conditions throughout the day. Unlike bunkers, players may ground their club
and take practice swings in native waste areas. Under the modern Rules of Golf, players are also permitted to remove loose impediments such as leaves, stones, pinecones, and twigs in both bunkers and native waste areas.
Golf Rules Question: What if my ball is embedded in native waste-area sand?
Under USGA Rule 16.3, free relief is not permitted when a ball is embedded in sand in a part of the general area that is not cut to fairway height or less. In simple terms, the sand would need to be part of a closely mown area, such as fairway topdressing sand, for free relief to apply. Because native waste areas are not closely mown, a ball embedded in the sand does not receive free relief. The ball must either be played as it lies or declared unplayable under Rule 19.

Keep It Simple: The Truth About Contact from Fairway Bunkers
Many theories exist about fairway bunker play, but our recent TrackMan testing showed little difference in launch conditions between shots hit from grass and sand with a 6-iron or pitching wedge. Why? In a successful bunker shot, the club strikes the ball first, so the sand has minimal effect on launch, spin, or flight. Clean contact is everything.
Technique is simple:
• Set your lead foot firmly into the sand for stability.
• Stay balanced and shift through the shot.
• Trust the strike—don’t hang back trying to “lift” the ball.
One of the biggest mistakes is leaning back to help the ball into the air. That instinct reduces contact quality. Forward pressure and committed motion lead to the best results.
Strategy Matters More Than Technique: The 50/50 Rule
Success from fairway bunkers is driven more by decision-making than swing mechanics. The 50/50 Rule has two parts:
1. Position in the Bunker
If the ball is in the back half of the bunker, you have more room to clear the lip and can make a more aggressive swing. In the front half, the priority shifts to simply getting out safely rather than maximizing distance.
2. The Lip Clearance Decision
If you are unsure whether the club will clear the lip, take more loft. Smart players choose the club that guarantees success, not the one they hope will work.
Ask yourself: “Is this the smartest play, or an emotional reaction to the previous shot?”
Final Thought: Fairway bunkers test strategy as much as execution. With a stable base, committed strike, and disciplined decisions, they become far less intimidating.

The 2026 Men’s and Women’s Singles Club Championships delivered an unforgettable showcase of competitive tennis here at Brook Hollow. Both finals pushed to thrilling third sets, with each match extending well beyond the two-hour mark. On the men’s side, Bobby Crews battled past Hunter Kearney 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in a hardfought contest. In the women’s final, Brandi Jane Graham outlasted fellow Washington and Lee alum Mason Custard 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to claim the title. Congratulations to all four finalists for delivering such an exceptional level of play and providing an exciting afternoon for our membership.
In addition to the excitement on court, we are pleased to share some significant enhancements to our racquet facilities. The club has recently completed the installation of state-of-the-art LED lighting across all tennis and pickleball courts. This upgrade provides consistent, glare-free illumination, which greatly improves visibility and the overall playing experience. Whether you’re competing in the evening or enjoying a casual match, the new lighting ensures our courts meet the highest performance standards while offering a more enjoyable environment for both players and spectators.
We are also excited to introduce a new ball machine, now available for member use on Indoor Court #1. Designed for all skill levels, this machine features Bluetooth connectivity and integrates with the “Like My Drill” app, allowing members to customize and control their workouts directly from an Apple phone or watch. Reservations can be made through the Brook Hollow app or by contacting the tennis shop. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this new addition as we continue to elevate the racquet experience at the club.
Pro Tip: Download and set up your “Like My Drill” account ahead of time so you’re ready to scan and start playing as soon as you arrive at the club. (Currently only available for iPhone/iPad)

After 18 months of intensive study, hands-on application, and extensive testing, personal trainer Remington Roberts officially earned her certification in Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT). The achievement reflects not only her dedication to continued education but also her commitment to helping clients move more efficiently, build strength safely, and train with greater confidence.

His ideas were not only imaginative but consistently executed with a level of craftsmanship beyond reproach.
Equally important has been David’s role as a mentor. During his time with us, he guided and trained our next Pastry Sous Chef, Chef Janelle, who has been a valued member of the Brook Hollow pastry team since 2017. Working under both award-winning Chef Michelle Brown and Executive Pastry Chef David Obar, Janelle has grown into a talented, confident, and forwardthinking pastry professional.
It is my pleasure to announce Janelle’s wellearned promotion to Pastry Sous Chef of Brook Hollow Golf Club. Janelle has always been quick to learn, eager to push boundaries, and passionate about refining her craft. Her recent creation at our member BYOB wine dinner—a beautifully elevated interpretation of the classic Saint Honoré Tart—was a perfect example of her skill and imagination. This French shortbread tart, accented with chocolate and crowned with coconut profiteroles, was met with glowing praise
from our members and served as a delightful finale to an exceptional meal.
Janelle continues to show a deep commitment to her professional growth and plans to pursue additional training in advanced pastry and confectionery techniques. We look forward to seeing her talents flourish even further.

JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING (AGES 7 – 14)
TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS, JUNE 16 – JULY 31 | 10 AM – 3:30 PM
Classes offered Tuesdays and Fridays. Participants (ages 7-14) will learn the basics of being a future lifeguard by developing swimming and life-saving skills. The course will teach in-water rescues, CPR and First Aid skills, and the use of lifeguarding equipment. Students will shadow certified lifeguards on the job.

Join us for the 2026 Junior Club Championships, an event that showcases the skills, determination, and competitive spirit of our junior golfers. Divisions will be separated by boys and girls, then broken down by age groups. Scan the QR code below to register your junior golfer.
Format: Individual Stroke Play within the division (max score of 9 on a hole)
Tee Times: 8:30 AM for both days

Summer golf camps offer a week packed with entertainment, interactive challenges, and camaraderie – all designed to inspire a deeper love for golf in your junior. We provide a welcoming, fun, and affirmative educational environment. The camps focus on teaching proper golf etiquette, providing a basic grasp of the game’s rules, and introducing essential golf skills while underscoring the joy and long-term rewards of playing. We provide snacks, water, and prizes for each weekly camp.
All camps open on Thursday, March 19 at 8 AM.

TENNIS CAMP

This camp will focus on stroke production using competitive games and develop match play experience. After the first instructional tennis session, juniors will dive in to cool off before lunch with friends by the pool. $375/child/week

All-Sports Camp is a fast-paced, fun environment where juniors participate in various sports, including tennis, golf, soccer, whiffle ball, kickball, basketball, pickleball, and more. Swim break and lunch included. $450/child/week
