As we prepare for a new school year, I can’t help but wonder with anticipation what good things lie ahead for Meridian Technology Center. This fall, our Stillwater campus will welcome more than 800 high school students and adults into our 20 plus full-time career training programs. Our team of adjunct instructors spent the summer preparing content for the more than 100 professional and personal development courses that we will offer this semester, and our Workforce and Economic Development team continues to cultivate new partnerships with business and industry clients across the five counties we serve and the Center for Business Development has helped entrepreneurs launch and grow their new businesses. Additionally, within the next few months, the construction of our new South Division campus in Guthrie should be complete. We plan to open in January 2022 and are excited to welcome guests in the 7,000-square-foot exhibit hall, deliver medical training in our skills classroom and labs, launch the First Capitol Film Crew Institute, host evening culinary arts courses and computer training classes, and provide a space for entrepreneurs to grow their business. For our staff, it’s the beginning of a new chapter in our story. We look forward to you joining us on this journey. The courses in this catalog are designed to ensure we live out our mission to educate, enrich lives and secure economic futures for people like you. PHARMACY TECH The Pharmacy Technician program at Meridian Technology Center was named a top training program in Oklahoma.

$100,000 GRANT The Guthrie Chamber of Commerce, Meridian and the city of Guthrie were awarded a collaborative grant of $100,000 from the Oklahoma Office of Workforce Development to support the launch of training programs to build the local film and television industry’s workforce.

NASA HUNCH PARTICIPANTS Pre-Engineering students worked to solve problems for NASA through the High Schools United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) outreach program.

WORK BOOTS The North Central Oklahoma Home Builders Association (NCOHBA) and Atwoods Ranch and Home provided students in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Carpentry, Electrical Technology, Facilities Management and Masonry programs with a pair of steel-toed work boots through the Boots on the Ground program.

Session 1: The Impact of Type and Text

Thanks to technology, we have a wealth of choices for communicating in the office and beyond, but those choices often create challenges. For example, email a colleague when you should have called, and they might misunderstand your tone. Text your boss when you should have emailed, and you might risk them thinking you’re unprofessional. This session will help you know when it’s appropriate to email or text, and how to craft effective messages that match the tone, content and length your situation requires. Session 2: Making the Most of One-On-One Meetings

Most of us have a love/hate relationship with meetings. Their exchange of ideas is missioncritical, but the time spent away from our desk can be debilitating, especially if the meeting is poorly executed. All of that is magnified when the format is one-on-one, so it’s even more important to get the experience right. This session will offer strategies to up your meeting game, regardless of where you are on your org chart. Facilitator Amie Haar will explore how to prepare to get the best possible outcomes, how to stay present and focused from outside distractions, and how to manage your body language and read the language of the person with whom you’re meeting. 9/15

BUSINESS Session 3: Speaking Up in Small Groups

Forming an LLC

Our leadership readiness is often measured in part by our willingness to speak up in group settings. How we speak off-the-cuff can have a bigger impact on our career trajectory than formal presentations or speeches because every single day we have an opportunity to make an impact by sharing our ideas. This interactive session will lead you to discern your natural strengths when it comes to presenting your thoughts to others, as well as practical strategies to play to those strengths so you can effectively move your ideas forward. Barriers to public speaking and workarounds to manage them will be discussed, as well as time-tested methods to get your head in the right space before you meet with others to share your ideas. 9/29

Following the completion of the Communication Matters Series, instructor Amie Haar will schedule a 50-minute coaching call with each participant individually to answer questions, offer feedback and provide support on what is working and what is not regarding communication styles and strategies. Ready Set Retire

Thinking of retiring? Get answers to your retirement questions and concerns. Learn the basics of IRA rollovers, explore portfolio management strategies and ways to lower risk and protect against inflation. Know the pros and cons of annuities before you buy one, not after. Creating Trusts for Your Estate Plan

Most Americans who own a home, a car or another titled/deeded asset can benefit from a trust. Anyone who wishes to help protect or control their assets during life and after death can benefit from a trust. But what kind of trust does one need? What are the tax implications of a trust? Can someone change their trust after it is created? Can someone else change my trust change after I die? People are full of questions surrounding this area of estate planing, and much of the beliefs and information readily available is simply not true. This course will teach you the basics of a trust, such as what a trust is, how it works, the benefits of a trust and the major types of trusts. The instructor for this course is an experienced attorney who will answer your questions and help you better understand these estate planning tools. 11/08

Listen to Lead: Finding Balance in Conversation

We experience situations every day that ask the question, “Is now the time to boldly lead by speaking or by listening?” Do I take control of the conversation, or do I let the ideas grow and information be collected for a while longer? Should I answer questions I already know the answers to for efficiency, or should I allow others to come to the answer on their own? Do I step in and grab the mic, or do I pass it to someone else? Every conversation we have, whether it is in front of an audience, a small group, or even one-onone, is the opportunity to make these choices over and over again. So, what separates those who master these challenges and those who get derailed? The answer is agility—emotional agility. Emotional agility is a science-based approach that allows us to navigate life’s twists and turns with selfacceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind. In this interactive session, Anna Irwin shares four key concepts that encourage us to acknowledge uncomfortable experiences while simultaneously detaching from them, thereby allowing us to embrace our core values and adjust our actions so they can move us where we truly want to go. 9/07

Eye contact. Posture. Fidgeting. Close talking. These simple gestures can make all the difference in gaining a person’s trust and building rapport, leading to better communication. Storm Chasing: Capturing Big Ideas Through Brainstorming

Storms don’t just pop up. The elements have to be just right to create these atmospheric weather conditions. It’s the same with big ideas. They don’t just happen, but when the right people and processes come together to brainstorm a project or a problem, the results can put an end to your team’s creative drought. Brainstorming is both an art and a science. There’s more to this creative thinking process than simply throwing out ideas for consideration. In this interactive session, you’ll explore what brainstorming is and what it’s not, why there are added benefits of bringing others together, how to create an environment that fosters creative ideas, and tips to facilitate a session that gets great results. In addition to learning how to make a brainstorming session effective for your team, you will also discover practical and creative ways to challenge yourself to think creatively when you’re working solo. 10/12

During this first session, we will explore strengths from an individual perspective. Each participant will complete an online strengths assessment before the session. With that information, each participant will gain insight into their personal strengths including behaviors, blind spots and action items, as well as the practice of pairing strengths for greater leverage. 9/14

Explore Your Interests at Tech

With 24 programs to choose from, training at Meridian combines theoretical framework and hands-on skills application. Instructors are experts in their field and industry representatives help shape course content.

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors

Depending on their high school, students can earn 3 or 4 credits per year. Some of these credits count as electives, some count as academic credits. The Meridian STEM Academy, including preengineering and biomedical sciences, is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. For all other programs, students may attend their junior or senior year. When space is available, sophomores can enroll for afternoon programs. Students attend either a morning or afternoon session. High school students living in the Meridian Technology Center district attend at no cost and should visit with their counselor about applying.

Adults

Adult students can chose from either the morning or afternoon session or attend all day, depending on program availability and their schedule. Tuition for adults and those living outside of the district depends on the specific program. Adults may also be eligible for financial aid through grants and scholarships and should visit with the Financial Aid Officer. Adult students may apply on our website.

College Credit

Earn college credit while you’re at Meridian. Through a cooperative effort between the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Oklahoma Department of Career & Technology Education, college credit toward an associate of applied science degree (A.A.S.) may be available upon completion of a career major. An A.A.S. is a technical workforce degree and is a great path for someone who plans on entering the workforce immediately after earning the degree. College credit is specific to the technical workforce degree and usually does not transfer to a bachelor’s degree.

We provide business consulting and coaching to early-stage companies and aspiring entrepreneurs. We’ll help you explore the feasibility of an idea, identify a new market for your product or service, evaluate your marketing, understand how to hire the right employees and more. Business Incubation When You’re Starting a Business

Business incubation is a focused process that includes management guidance, technical assistance and consulting for young, growing companies. Entrepreneurs can locate their business in the Center for Business Development as a residential or virtual tenant. Residential tenants have access to services and rent dedicated office or lab space for up to three years. Virtual tenants have access to our services but do not rent space. Startup Stillwater Accelerator Learn what it takes to launch a business with Startup Stillwater Accelerator, a six-week series devoted to getting your new business off the ground. Startup Stillwater Accelerator sessions will be led by Brad Rickelman, Assistant Director of the Meridian Technology Center for Business Development. Hiset, GED & esl HiSET or GED

Passing the high school equivalency test or the general education development test is equivalent to earning a high school diploma and can open the door for students applying for a job or seeking further education. Students take a pre-test to determine their academic levels in reading, math and language. Based on their results, they study to advance to the next level and build toward taking the GED or HiSET. Classes are self-paced and offered at no cost. There is a fee to take the exams.
