arter G. Woodson and his brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, were the creators of “Negro History and Literature Week” in 1924 (initially celebrated in April). In 1926 the second week of February was chosen to commemorate African Americans’ contributions; the second week coincides with Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Thanks to the proximity of two of the most prominent figures in eliminating slavery, February is the most celebrated month on our Equal opportunity Calendar of events. In the 1960s, many colleges made it a month-long recognition. In 1976, while I was in the 3rd grade, President Ford officially recognized the month as Black History Month in a commemorative speech. Notably, he urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of the Black Americans in every endeavor throughout OUR history.” The previous decade marked President Lindon Johnson’s signing into law two significant Civil Rights Acts that prevented discrimination in public places, integrated schools, made employment discrimination illegal, and affirmed Blacks’ voting rights. Yes, voting rights 100 years after emancipation from slavery, finally there was a law establishing those rights.

rench for “Fat Tuesday” or “Shove Tuesday” Mardi Gras is the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of lent which consist of 40 days of fasting in penance of the year. It is traditional during Mardi Gras to have large decadent celebrations and grandiose parties and parades and often appear in costume. People from all walks of life take the time to reinvent themselves as beast, birds, mermaids, monks and robbers. Giving way to their alter egos and living in the moments of celebration. But where did the tradition of appearing in masquerade actually come from?
