s you can imagine, being a writer, photographer, and magazine publisher, I have had the honor of meeting and working with some of the greatest people around. In my interactions with people, a few questions that always come to mind for myself are “what if you knew your whole life exactly what you wanted to do and what you wanted to grow up to be? I wonder how fast could you achieve your dream?” Could you imagine, seeing a dream and working at it from a young age, your adult skill set would be off the chart, almost like a Tiger Woods or Michael Jackson. Well, that is exactly what has happened with teen designer Jada Brown. Creating designs under the name Yada Khoom, Jada has started her path forward in the world of fashion design and is one of the youngest if not the youngest clothing designer in the northwest Florida area.

FACTS ABOUT AUTISM
Autism Prevalence - In 2020, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2016 data. - 1 in 34 boys identified with autism - 1 in 144 girls identified with autism - Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. - Most children were still being diagnosed after age 4, though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2. - 31% of children with ASD have an intellectual disability (intelligence quotient [IQ] <70), 25% are in the borderline range (IQ 71–85), and 44% have IQ scores in the average to above average range (i.e., IQ >85). - Autism affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups. - Minority groups tend to be diagnosed later and less often. - Early intervention affords the best opportunity to support healthy development and deliver benefits across the lifespan. - There is no medical detection for autism.
What causes autism? - Research indicates that genetics are involved in the vast majority of cases. - Children born to older parents are at a higher risk for having autism. - Parents who have a child with ASD have a 2 to 18 percent chance of having a second child who is also affected. - Studies have shown that among identical twins, if one child has autism, the other will be affected about 36 to 95 percent of the time. In non-identical twins, if one child has autism, then the other is affected about 31 percent of the time. - Over the last two decades, extensive research has asked whether there is any link between childhood vaccinations and autism. Associated Challenges - An estimated 40 percent of people with autism are nonverbal. - 31% of children with ASD have an intellectual disability (intelligence quotient [IQ] <70) with significant challenges in daily function, 25% are in the borderline range (IQ 71–85). - Nearly half of those with autism wander or bolt from safety. - Nearly two-thirds of children with autism between the ages of 6 and 15 have been bullied. - Nearly 28 percent of 8-year-olds with ASD have self-injurious behaviors. Head banging, arm biting and skin scratching are among the most common. - Drowning remains a leading cause of death for children with autism and accounts for approximately 90 percent of deaths associated with wandering or bolting by those age 14 and younger.

tarting any new career can be both exciting and confusing at the same time. The factor of not knowing what your expectations will be can not only be intimidating, but downright frightening. In my time as a photographer one of the most common questions asked by new models considering looking to model on a more professional basis is, “I want to get more serious about modeling, but I don’t know where to start.” The crazy thing is depending on who you ask, there are multiple answers to the very familiar but important industry question. After all, everyone must start from somewhere. For the polished model it is easy to say, “work hard and it will all work out in the end,” but what if you have very little experience and do not know much about the industry. Here are four of my top suggestions on getting your feet and moving your modeling career into a positive direction.

Pirates of the Caribbean
The pirates became increasingly powerful and the era of true pirate control occurred when a combined FrancoSpanish fleet attacked Nassau in 1703 and again in 1706. The island was effectively abandoned by many of its settlers and left without any English government presence. Nassau was then taken over by English privateers who became completely lawless pirates over time. The Bahamas were well-suited as a base of operations for pirates as its waters were too shallow for a large man-of-war but deep enough for the fast, shallow draft vessels favoured by pirates. From their snug harbour in Nassau they could employ their hit and run tactics to full effect and they devastated the merchant shipping that plied the trade routes just a short sail away. The pirates essentially established their own “Republic” with its own “governors” and their plundered booty forming the basis of a thriving community that attracted rogues, merchants and wild women from far and wide. It was said that when pirates slept, they did not dream of going to heaven but instead of returning to their favourite port of Nassau on New Providence Island.
