WATER IS LIFE – LIGHT IS ART
Water Light Festival
Local and international artists transform water sites and culturalhistorical treasures in Brixen into a gallery with their creative ideas. The focus is on reflections on ecological, economic, and social aspects relating to water and light.
The Brixen Water Light Festival takes place biannually in May. The idea for the festival was born in 2015 after the première of the light and music show at the Hofburg in Brixen. The first edition of the festival was held in May 2017.
Art, light and water and a head full of dreams and thoughts. Being free and letting oneself fall, floating on the surface of the water, submerging, and carrying the light within. Being critical and playful, a rollercoaster of emotions. Screaming, standing still, having fun, seeing the world. And figure it out?
The Brixen Water Light Festival stands as a venue in South Tyrol for sustainability. The focus is on the use of energy from renewable sources, environmentally friendly products and digital advertising campaigns. It would be nice if you too could help to make our festival a more ecologically compatible event, e.g. by making your journey to us more environmentally friendly.
IMAGINE PEACE
IMAGINE PEACE is a European Union co-funded project connecting five light festivals: Brixen Water Light Festival (Italy), Copenhagen Light Festival (Denmark), Essen Light Festival (Germany), Fjord Oslo (Norway), and Visualia Festival of Light (Croatia). Through cross-border artistic collaboration, it promotes a shared vision of peace and sustainability, engaging people of different ages and cultural backgrounds. Supported by the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and Eurac Research (Italy), the project aims to empirically measure its sustainable impact. By embracing cultural diversity, it highlights shared values and a collective aspiration for a peaceful future.

REFLECTIONS ON WATER AND PEACE
Werner Zanotti, Director –
Hanna Bizjak, Project Manager
2017, the Water Light Festival began with a simple ambition: to bring new life into the streets, squares and cloisters of Brixen during the quiet month of May. What started as a cultural initiative has gradually evolved into a mature project that reaches far beyond the city while becoming ever more rooted in its identity.
Brixen has always been shaped by water. Rivers, fountains, irrigation channels and alpine springs have influenced its history, landscape and daily life for centuries. Over the years, the festival has explored water not only as a natural resource, but as a fragile element that connects communities, memory and life itself. In times marked by climate change, droughts and ecological imbalance, water can no longer be taken for granted. Art cannot solve these challenges, but it can create awareness, shift perspectives and open spaces for dialogue.
This year’s edition makes this development especially visible allowing Brixen to appear in a new light. The installations enter into dialogue with the city, its waterways, squares, churches and hidden places, revealing new perspectives on what is familiar. This dialogue expands further through participation in the European project IMAGINE PEACE. Together with festivals and scientific institutions in Brixen, Copenhagen, Essen, Oslo and Pula, the festival becomes part of an international network of artistic exchange and collaboration. Seven installations will travel across all five festivals, connecting audiences through a shared visual language and a common reflection on peace.
At the centre of this year’s edition lies peace — not as an abstract idea, but as a fragile and deeply human practice rooted in listening, encounter and shared experience. In a world increasingly marked by conflict and division, art and light can create moments of contemplation and connection.
Our sincere thanks go to the curators Nika, Dorothy and Nina, artists, partners, institutions, sponsors, citizens and especially the entire festival team, whose commitment and passion make the Water Light Festival possible year after year. This Art Book preserves the spirit of a festival that continues to evolve together with its city, its water and its time.
SHIFTING PERCEPTIONS
Nika Perne, Dorothy Di Stefano, Nina Stricker
The motto of this year’s edition of the Brixen Water Light Festival is Water is Life, Light is Art, expanding the festival both thematically and in the art forms presented. The curatorial approach developed by Nika Perne, Dorothy Di Stefano and Nina Stricker is rooted in careful observation of the site, with selections guided by spatial context rather than predetermined concepts.
The programme reflects Brixen’s unique topography and multilayered identity, anchored in themes that have always been at the festival’s core: reflection on natural resources, contemporary challenges, fascination with nature, discussion of humanistic values and the special landscape of the site.
The works presented throughout the festival offer diverse experiences to visitors through powerful storytelling and the dialogue between the works and their respective selected sites. The works do not compete with the city but sit within it, creating small shifts in perception in which familiar places begin to feel slightly altered. Across the programme, this unfolds through a range of practices engaging with the underlying systems that shape the world around us.
Brixen’s identity is shaped by its architecture, its waterways and the way light moves through it at night. Rather than imposing onto the city, the approach was to work with that, allowing each site to guide the selection of artists and the placement of works. Each installation responds to a specific location, not as an object placed within it, but as something that shifts how that place is perceived. Light becomes a tool for revealing, drawing attention to details and conditions that are present but overlooked.
Local specificities are merged with global issues, such as the festival’s underlying sustainability mission and the theme of this 2026 edition: Imagine Peace. It is a transnational project supported by the European Commission that fosters reflection on unity and a better future. It creates a network of connections among the festivals, encouraging collaboration, participation and mutual inspiration. Participatory art has a special place this year, further reinforcing the importance of audience engagement to turn art into a collective experience.
While respecting and upholding the festival’s mission and taking the Imagine Peace initiative into account, the festival emphasises cultural diversity, sustainability and artistic exchange, fostering meaningful dialogue between local and international artists and integrating environmental consciousness and shared values into the festival’s narrative.

Davy & Kristin McGuire, directors of Studio McGuire and associate artists at Ridley Scott Creative Group, are award-winning mixed reality artists. Renowned for immersive storytelling and digital projections, their work has been shown in 38 countries.
Sirens is a holographic water installation that reflects on the pollution of our oceans. A mermaid, a turtle and delicate ocean plants drift through pools and reflective surfaces, evoking a fragile underwater world of beauty and degradation shaped by human
presence that is both captivating and unsettling. Through light, reflection and subtle movement, the work draws attention to marine environments, revealing how myth and reality begin to merge in a landscape increasingly defined by humans.

IDENTITY
2025
Alessandro Lupi experiments with matter, light and shadow, studying perception in dialogue with space. His work employs an archetypal yet exploratory poetic language stimulating imagination and interaction and has been exhibited in curated spaces
Identity by Alessandro Lupi is an interactive installation that reflects on the human ego. At first glance, a hexagonal mirror reflects its surroundings; yet as one approaches, the image of oneself begins to dissolve, disappearing into a cloud of light. What remains visible is
no longer the self, but the other. Identity thus shifts the gaze from “I” to “we”. The work presents itself as an anti-ego: an invitation to cultivate empathy and to recognise responsibility as a shared dimension.

Miriam Prantl is an Austrian artist working with light, video, sound and painting. She used to be a professional dancer and went on to study in London at Camberwell College of Arts, Chelsea College of Arts (BA) and the Royal College of Art (MA).
Spheres consists of four interconnected rings fitted with programmed LED lines. Pulsating light sequences in shifting colours allow small points of light to flow along the loops, suggesting weightlessness and floating. The steel rings are powder-coated and finished with iridescent lacquer. Their hues change throughout the day; at night, light dominates the sculpture. The work integrates contemporary technologies to create an immersive, spatial experience. Realised in collaboration with Zumtobel.

science fiction, philosophy and modern animism, her work examines how images, technologies and living systems evolve together.
SURVEY OF WAVES
2026, Credit: Artwork by Sabrina Ratté, Soundtrack by Roger Tellier-Craig
Survey of Waves is an immersive video installation that draws on the imagery of primordial waters: dreams, visions and intuition encounter an original, generative substance. Water is both medium and metaphor, carrying energy, memory and transformation. Currents
transport imagined forms through an infinite ocean, an evolution of living and technological systems. Through video synthesis and 3D animation, the work creates an environment where physical, ecological and virtual realms converge.
GAN JIAN
China
Beijing-based artist Gan Jian directs his art towards the perceptual limits of space and form. He works with digital media, light, directed
sound fields and industrial structures, generating ritualised experiences of threshold, stillness and gravity.
CORNERSTONE.INTEG
2018
The audiovisual installation Cornerstone.INTEG is a closed perceptual system. A vertical beam of light forms the structural and symbolic central axis where technology, power and the sacred converge. The floor projection is abstract industrial landscapes,
urban grids and data-driven geometries. From above, scale and narrative dissolve into structure and density, creating a “God’s view”. Visitors are subtly aligned through various methods, and immersion becomes a controlled act of perception.

Ziyad Alroqi is a Saudi Arabian artist exploring cultural identity, memory and desert architecture. A studied architect, he questions notions of place and time. At Wasm Studio, he uses digital and analogue media to investigate collective narratives.
LUMINOUS ROUTES
2026
Luminous Routes is a series of light installations that transforms urban and natural landscapes through floating geometric shapes. Installed in various architectural and natural settings, they dissolve their own logic: floating squares, triangles anchored to the
ground and luminous lines piercing the darkness, making the tension between order and emotion, structure and surrender palpable. In a world of motion, Luminous Routes creates a space of stillness that invites moments of reflection.

Petar Šćulac is a Croatian artist specialising in light installations. Since 2012 he has explored the relationship between light, shadow and space through painting, illustration, restoration and scenography using traditional and modern materials.
SPATIAL DIVERGENCE
2026
Spatial Divergence consists of two light installations in dialogue through form, perception and spatial experience. Both explore light and shadow in an architectural context through projection. The first dissolves rigid structures into flowing, organic forms,
causing existing architecture to appear unstable. The second remains formally flat, yet projected shadow generates depth and volume. The contrast examines the tension between organic and constructed space and our perception of stability.

VOICE OF UKRAINE. FROM SHADOWS TO RADIANCE, SPIRITS AWAKENED
2026
Voice of Ukraine reveals the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Rooted in culture yet seen through a contemporary lens, the work places artistic interpretations of Ukrainian myths at its centre: Dolya, Nedolya, Bereginya and Morena represent fate,
trial, protection and renewal. The animation is inspired by the faceless Motanka doll. Through light and darkness, the projection speaks of memory, loss and hope. The sound composition blends traditional Ukrainian and contemporary music.
GIULIO BOCCARDI

Sette Arrese is a site-specific performance that transforms devotion into strength. For seven days, the artist remains suspended in the air, raising a white flag every day at sunset. This ascetic practice of surrender invites visitors to immerse themselves in
solitude, physical challenge and self-reflection, experiencing tension, calm and time pausing. Each sunset marks the new beginning of an intense emotional and sensory experience where presence, symbolism, and contemplative calm intertwine.

UTOPIA
Leonardo Panizza (b. 1988, Italy) is an artist and filmmaker working with video, installation, and performance. He merges anthropology, psychology, and environmental research in his varied exploration of the relationship between humans, landscape, and perception.
2026, Daniele De Bernardis, scientific supervision
Utopia sees peace as a fragile balance that can only exist through constant decision-making – not a stable state but permanent tension. Experiments on the interaction of light and matter are turned into video, sound, and projections. Two unfold across crash pads, while central
screens display data-driven visuals and a derived soundscape fills the space. One motto is prominent: As long as you are running, you decide whether to accelerate to beat the person in front of you, or stop to embrace them.

Spain
HORIZON
Playmodes is an audiovisual research studio based in Catalonia. Engineers, musicians and designers work with digital technologies that generate original instruments of light and sound, creating immersive installations, scenography and projections.
2021, Credit: HORIZON by Playmodes
Horizon is named after the line separating sky and earth, but the word also suggests openness, possibility and shifting perspective. The installation creates a perceptual field where light, sound and space converge at a vanishing point. Depth is continuously
recalibrated, dissolving the physical limits of the room beyond its architectural boundaries. The result is a fluid space in which perception becomes unstable and the relationship between reality, illusion and imagination is redefined.

CLAUDIA REH
Germany
Claudia Reh is a German light artist who uses high-intensity overhead projectors to create projections and performances.
Since 2012, she has presented her work at international festivals including Ghent, Amsterdam, Murten, Alberobello and Light Move.
FRACTIONS
2025
Fractions is a light project in progress relating to Imagine Peace. War leaves cities in ruins but also shatters values, hopes and relationships. Inspired by the Japanese art form kintsugi, Fractions addresses the traces of injury and the possibility of new connections
while flaws remain visible on purpose. It sees itself as a process, just like peace. A flowing projection holds fragments created by visitors to previous festivals floating in it, gradually coming together to form a common image.
CHRISTOPH HINTERHUBER
Austria
Christoph Hinterhuber’s approach is as conceptual as it is digital. His art explores abstraction and space from multiple angles:
pictorial, performative, digital, semiotic, architectural, linguistic, sonic and public as well as social, cognitive and historical.
MONOPOLY
2026, Curated by Leander Schwazer
Since 2007, artist Christoph Hinterhuber has been compiling a kind of dictionary under the title “Monohole” with the aim of breaking down rigid linguistic structures – neologisms intended to create a new universal organic language. The dancefloor is
the ideal setting for this new language, so the main hall of the Stadtgalerie is transformed into a kind of night club with soundtrack by the Innsbruck DJ duo monomono, who have composed danceable music from Christoph Hinterhuber’s neologisms.
LUZINTERRUPTUS

Luzinterruptus is a collective that transforms public spaces through poetic rallies and light interventions. Light is used as a narrative medium
inspiring critical thinking, reflection, and collaboration, blending artistic poetics and social relevance.
ON BLANK PAGES
2021
On Blank Pages is a light installation that transforms public space into a site for free expression. Thousands of blank pages form an ever-growing collage of anonymous, uncensored contributions, perpetually rearranged by the wind. The result is a living archive of collective
emotions. The work invites visitors to pause, reflect and contribute their own voice to a shared dialogue. Encounter, authorship and collective creativity become tangible as viewers become part of this dynamic, poetic whole.

Imagine Peace is a female perspective on war and peace, shaped by the experiences of motherhood, flight and displacement. Men start wars, but they remain their mothers’ children, with a unique, unconditional value, whereas war erases individuality and
places abstract ideas over human life. A sand animation created through light and projection forms fleeting images, creating a dialogue about the fragility and value of human life and enabling reflection on peace, responsibility and compassion.

IN MEMORIAM
MASSIMO UBERTI
Italy
Massimo Uberti studied fine arts in Milan. He participated in several light festivals and did many experiences in public art in both Italy and worldwide. He has had exhibitions in galleries and museums.
Battistero d’Oro
2020, Brixen Water Light Festival Permanent installation since 2022
The Italian artist Massimo Uberti builds on the unusual heptagonal basic structure of the fountain, an octagonal building, which in its form and shape is evocative of the typical baptisteries. He sets a balancing counterpoint to the unusual structure of the building and gives the existing fountain a new form and function. The filigree construction consists of fine, gold-coloured metal tubes. Windows and doors of the baptistery consist of bent neon tubes.
Uberti worked on a permanent installation in Amsterdam, and on behalf of UNESCO he worked in the city of Verona.
With “Battistero d’oro” Uberti builds a bridge to a Christian tradition, which was particularly widespread in Italy and gave great importance to baptisteries. The octagonal floor plan of the baptisteries is based on an eschatological thought: on the first day of the week (Sunday) Christ rose from the dead, and so the original first day of creation was regarded as the eighth day and day of new creation.

2026
A Mesa Usc is a sound and light installation reflecting on the concept of political borders. Music is both as source of comfort and as landscape, built around women’s oral memory: folk songs with the potential to preserve, renegotiate and evolve cultural identities in border
regions. Based on recordings from Friuli Venezia Giulia, the dramaturgy is expanded with new recordings from South Tyrol. The installation builds on the work Sot Glas, which brings voices and memories to life in a unique space.
