WELCOME
Welcome to BYMT’s 2025 Summer Season, which has been skilfully curated by our Young Company Panel. We are delighted to be returning to Southwark Playhouse, a venue dedicated to celebrating new musicals and a space that welcomes our young people.
From the moment Eden pitched her Loki musical to the BYMT New Music Theatre Award panel, the excitement around this idea has grown; the panel’s decision was unanimous and so we began the thrilling journey towards the show you are here to see. The Award celebrates a writer’s first fully produced musical and is a showcase for them as much as the performers. In May we gathered most of the young cast together with Eden and the creative team for two days of playful devising and development, and following this Eden added jokes made by the young people and honed the piece to resonate with their responses to the beauty industry,
It has been a privilege to witness the young performers and musicians who have brought this story to life over the past two weeks. Thank you to this brilliantly inventive group of young people and to the freelance creative, technical and pastoral team members who have made this production possible through their commitment to the cast’s creativity and safety. I am so grateful to the BYMT staff team, our Board and funders who support the company throughout the year, believing that our projects can and will shape the future of new music theatre.
BYMT exists to tell stories which question and challenge and sometimes even make fun of the world we live in, driven by the desires and energies of the young, and not so young, characters. We hope you enjoy the show!
Emily Gray (Creative Director, BYMT)
a mythical musical comedy
Welcome to all you gods, humans, and those undecided. What do you get when you combine a childhood fascination with mythology, an adult love of golden age musical comedies, and an incredibly game youth theatre group? The Glamification of Loki, of course! Receiving BYMT’s New Musical Theatre Award for this show was a real thrill, and to be premiering it with Southwark Playhouse and this fantastic young cast is the icing on the cake. I can only hope you all have as good a time watching it as we had making it.
I began writing this show in the spring of 2024, so getting to this full version has been an unusually accelerated process for a musical, but the energy and feedback of the BYMT team has made it a delight. I must also tip my horned helmet to my excellent creative team: Grace Taylor, Lavie Rabinovitz, Steven Dean Moore and Cory Shipp. As a writer, I get to create any world I like, but they actually have to make it happen, and they’ve done it with all the unhinged glee I could ask for.
While not an adaptation of any one story, this show does combine elements of several different Norse tales that feature Loki, so any hardcore mythology fans may notice those. In these stories, Loki often shape-shifts into various animals, such as a horse or a salmon, but budget constraints meant we’ll be saving that for the West End version. Much of the inspiration for this show also came from classic musical comedies like Guys and Dolls, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Damn Yankees, and many more. The excellent tunes, sharp wit, and ridiculous plots always put a smile on my face, and I hope I’ve replicated some of that here.
And finally, if you were hoping to see Tom Hiddleston or Chris Hemsworth here, I’m very sorry for your disappointment. I hear they’re lovely.
Skål!

About british youth music theatre
We set the stage for motivated young people ready to create their own narrative.
British Youth Music Theatre is a charity built on community. Our young people are at the heart of our work, and involvement extends far beyond performance.
We support 11-21 year olds by equipping them with both the training and opportunities to step into their creative potential. Our workshops, camps and productions provide young people with the resources, guidance and knowledge to develop their skills, and our culture of authenticity, collaboration, and generosity inspires confidence in their abilities.
We don’t believe anyone with creative aspirations should be left behind, and encourage all young people to join our community. Future theatre makers are provided a pathway into the industry through our nurturing process, and we champion the potential of every individual and support the discovery of their unique journey.
thank you to our supporters
