The UK is the birthplace of plastics, with the first man-made plastic, Parkesine, being patented in 1856.
The UK has a strong chemicals industry that is a highly valued part of the UK’s accessible supply chain. There is an abundance of end markets in the UK, including a world-leading automotive sector as well as a sophisticated and highly evolved retail sector.
Export is also hugely important for the UK plastics industry. It exports plastic products and materials worth £9.6bn each year. Out of the BPF’s members, 80% are exporters. The plastics industry is the UK’s third largest manufacturing sector in terms of employment, with 5,800 companies employing over 162,000 people.
Industry turnover increased since 2010 and is now £27bn. This figure includes manufacturers of raw materials, plastic products, equipment suppliers and recyclers.
In recent years, the UK plastics industry has been shown to be one of the most productive in Europe when benchmarked against the leading five economies. What’s more, productivity is increasing year on year, with the industry continuing to invest significantly in energy-efficient machinery and automation.

We can service, repair, and monitor any type of extruder gearbox. All gearboxes are fully stripped and fully inspected. A comprehensive, detailed report is standard. Full rebuild reports and test documentation is also supplied as standard.
We have our own in-house precision gear manufacturing business in LAMOND & MURRAY DEXIS, who specialise in reverse engineering of obsolete or long lead time gears. All serviced and repaired units come with our 12 month warranty. We offer extended warranties for gearboxes we have serviced or repaired which we go onto condition base monitor.

The Horners Livery Company is proud to have been associated with the BPF for 80 years. For over 700 years our ancient Livery Company worked on the moulding and shaping of horn, a natural polymer. In the 1943 the Company embraced the Plastics Industry.
Being a “Horner” means giving something back to society, supporting charities that help the less advantaged and promoting the polymers industry through educational projects and design competitions that encourage students of all ages to take STEM subjects and acknowledging process and product innovations through our prestigious BPF Horners Awards . We also shine a spotlight on the valuable contribution apprentices make to our industry through the annual Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award.
The Horners promote good fellowship for members and guests through an active social programme and members can participate in the civic life of the City of London. To become a member of the Horners Company, you can be introduced by friends or colleagues who are already Liverymen, by the military affiliated unit, or as a prize winner of one of the Company's awards .
