A MESSAGE FROM THE HONOURABLE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND

CAMPBELL NEWMAN MP BRISBANE FESTIVAL 2012 IS AN UNPARALLELED OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CITY TO EXPERIENCE THE WONDERFUL DIVERSITY OF THE ARTS. IT IS A TIME WHEN WE CAN SEE THE BEST OF THEATRE, DANCE, MUSIC AND OPERA FROM AUSTRALIA AND AROUND THE GLOBE. The Queensland Government is a great supporter of Brisbane Festival with an annual investment of $5.29 million through Arts Queensland and additional support from Events Queensland. Events such as Brisbane Festival enhance Brisbane’s growing reputation as a destination to experience innovative, exciting and inspiring arts and cultural events.

This year we welcome back Santos GLNG City of Lights returning in 2012 to open Brisbane Festival with a new light, laser and special effects show that will be presented nightly over the three weeks of the Festival. The Queensland Government is pleased to continue supporting Brisbane Festival and I encourage all Queenslanders to come along and join in this wonderful event.

GRAHAM QUIRK BRISBANE’S CULTURAL REPUTATION CONTINUES TO GROW, AS TALENTED MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS EMERGE FROM OUR CITY AND SUBURBS, NURTURED BY OUR VIBRANT EDUCATIONAL AND ARTS INSTITUTIONS. One valuable launch pad for local artists is Brisbane Festival. This year promises to reach new heights with new commissions by Brisbane companies alongside wonderful work by national and international talent. As well as creating an inner-city hive of music, dance, circus and theatre, the Festival is also taking this talent out to the suburbs.

At Moreton Bay College, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra will stage the baroque opera L’Orfeo. At Brookside Shopping Centre and Mount Ommaney Centre the international sell-out cabaret, circus and comedy spectacular Soap – The Show will play to audiences for free. While at Sandgate Town Hall, Argentina’s hottest musicians will wow locals with tango, folk and storytelling. Brisbane City Council is proud to support Brisbane Festival and our vibrant arts scene again in 2012.

FOR 22 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER BRISBANE WILL BE AN EXCITING PLACE TO BE, AS RESIDENTS AND VISITORS EXPERIENCE SOME OF THE MOST VIBRANT PRODUCTIONS OF DANCE, MUSIC, THEATRE AND CIRCUS.

THIS YEAR’S BRISBANE FESTIVAL WILL BE MY THIRD AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND IT HAS BEEN AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY FROM 2010 TO THIS POINT.

Brisbane Festival 2012 will energise Brisbane, showcase the city’s amazing talent and add to the growing local arts and cultural scene.

On behalf of the Board I would like to thank the Queensland Government and the Brisbane City Council for their strong commitment to the arts to keep Brisbane at the forefront of the festival calendar. I would like to acknowledge and thank my fellow Board Directors, our Principal Partner Channel Nine, our Platinum Partners, Events Queensland, Santos GLNG and Sunsuper, all our corporate and media partners, our artists and our dedicated and talented Brisbane Festival staff.

As part of the Brisbane arts community and a resident of the city, I have spent the last two and a half years going to see many performances here by local and international artists, and meeting the local arts organisations. I have discovered an enormous depth and breadth of talent. With this in mind, I am very proud to announce that Brisbane artists, stories and companies will provide the focus, strength and backbone for this year’s Brisbane Festival. We have some thrilling projects in store.

Featuring a fantastic line-up of national and local Indigenous artists, the events will be led by a respected elder representing the Jagera and Turrbal peoples.

For the first time in our history, we will bring Dancenorth, Expressions Dance Company and Queensland Ballet together for a world premiere collaboration. Dance Energy will explore the brilliance and vibrancy of the arts in Queensland and celebrate the extraordinary talent we have right here at home. It is with incredible excitement that I welcome you all to Brisbane Festival 2012—a huge celebration of this city, its artists and communities.

WELCOME TO COUNTRY ON SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER, AS THE SUN SETS ON THE CITY, AN INDIGENOUS CEREMONY AND PROGRAM OF PERFORMING ARTS WILL HERALD THE FIRST NIGHT AND OFFICIAL OPENING OF BRISBANE FESTIVAL 2012.

One of Australia’s greatest operatic singers, Lisa Gasteen, will return to the stage for her first full opera in four years. We will travel back in time to 1942 to tell Brisbane’s wartime story in Boundary Street. Circa will present S — a world premiere work, and the wonderfully talented Queensland Symphony Orchestra will take centre stage across Brisbane Festival.

Creating a wonderful atmosphere for the crowds assembled along the river at South Bank, Welcome to Country will be a fitting opening ceremony for Brisbane’s largest festival and celebration of the city’s Indigenous communities. 3

DANCENORTH, EXPRESSIONS DANCE COMPANY AND QUEENSLAND BALLET (AUSTRALIA)

DANCE ENERGY WILL TRANSCEND THE BARRIERS OF CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE AND SHINE A LIGHT ON THE VERY BEST QUEENSLAND ARTISTS. Commissioned by Brisbane Festival, this world premiere performance is the first ever collaboration between Dancenorth, Expressions Dance Company (EDC) and Queensland Ballet. Dancenorth’s Raewyn Hill, EDC’s Natalie Weir and Queensland Ballet’s Gareth Belling will each create a piece to music composed by Australia’s greatest living composer, Peter Sculthorpe. To bring the performance to a stunning conclusion, London based, New Zealand choreographer Cameron McMillan will create a crescendo of movement using dancers from all three companies.

Dance Energy will be a rare moment in dance and a Festival highlight not to be missed. One of the earliest operas ever written, this is the story of the legendary poet Orpheus, whose bride Eurydice succumbs to a poisonous snake at their wedding. BOUNDARY STREET BLACK SWAN STATE THEATRE COMPANY (AUSTRALIA) WITH MUSIC COMPOSED AND PERFORMED BY JAZZ LEGEND JAMES MORRISON, THIS SWINGING WARTIME STORY REMINDS US OF THE INJUSTICE OF BRISBANE’S RECENT HISTORY. Set in West End in 1942, Boundary Street takes the audience to the hottest nightclub in town where ‘respectable’ Australian women are allured by African-American servicemen and their love for sizzling jazz music.

Prejudices are dispelled and friendships blossom but racism violently erupts on the city’s segregation line between black and white. Conceived by Kate Cherry and Kenneth Ransom, Boundary Street is written by Reg Cribb and also directed by Kate Cherry. It tells an important story about a time and place in Australian history, while igniting the stage with eyepopping swing, jitterbug and jive dancing.

BRISBANE WILL BE THE FIRST TO BASK IN THE ANGELIC HARMONIES OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST AND MOST FAMOUS CHOIRS IN AN INSPIRING AND ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE TO COMMENCE THEIR AUSTRALIAN TOUR. A choral institution for more than 500 years, the Vienna Boys Choir is returning to Australia for the first time since 2005. One of Europe’s enduring symbols, the choir performs more than 300 concerts a year in some of the world’s finest venues. This very special program includes a full performance of Giovanni Pergolesi’s haunting masterwork Stabat Mater, Mozart’s sublime Laudate Dominum, and the world premiere of a new commission by Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin set to Dorothea Mackellar’s iconic Australian text, My Country.

Celebrated virtuoso Nikolai Demidenko will then take to the stage in a powerful rendition of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.4. Described as a force of nature at the keyboard, Demidenko’s incredible performance is not to be missed.

This promises to be one of the liveliest and most technically brilliant string quintet performances you will ever experience, featuring classics by Mozart and Brahms as well as a world premiere by Australian composer Gordon Kerry.

GENERAL INFORMATION Road, bridge and river closures during Brisbane Festival 2012

28 September and reopens later at 8.30pm on Saturday 29 September.

Both sets of pedestrian stairs up Kangaroo Point Cliffs will be closed between 6.55pm and 7.30pm.

Bowen Terrace, Fortitude Valley will close between the Story Bridge and Bowen Street between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Local streets linking Brunswick Street and Bowen Terrace will be closed between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, with access open to local residents only.

The service road below the Kangaroo Point Cliffs will be closed at Captain Cook Bridge all day, except for authorized Brisbane Festival suppliers and Emergency Services vehicles.

Information for Sunsuper Riverfire Saturday 29 September There will be extensive road closures throughout the City, South Bank, West End, Kangaroo Point and Fortitude Valley areas.

Parklife will be held in the City Botanic Gardens and Riverstage. The City Botanic Gardens will be closed with no access to the riverside path and the Boardwalk between Alice Street and The Goodwill Bridge. Victoria Bridge traffic lanes will close to vehicular traffic (except Translink’s Busway which remains operational), between 4pm and 10.30pm. Traffic lanes will become available for pedestrian use between 5pm and 9.30pm. The western footpath of the Victoria Bridge (Museum side) will be closed between 5pm and 9.30pm. The eastern foothpath (South Bank side) remains open at all times. The Goodwill and Kurilpa Bridges will close to all traffic (pedestrian and cyclists) from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The Story Bridge will be closed to all traffic and pedestrians between 6.20pm and 8pm. The eastern foothpath (Dockside side) closes at these times however the western footpath (City side) closes earlier – from 2am on Friday

Kangaroo Point Measures will be introduced to alleviate congestion and improve safety in the Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point Precincts. Story Bridge Precinct No parking will be permitted on both sides of Main Street between Baildon and Holman Street with a two-minute drop off zone established on both sides of Main Street between Mackenzie and Wicklow Streets. Any vehicles parked in this section of Main Street will be towed. Holman Street will be closed at Main Street with access only permitted for residents upon proof of residency. Any vehicles parked in Holman Street will be booked and towed except for authorised Brisbane Festival suppliers and Emergency Services vehicles.

Cliffs Precinct No parking will be permitted along River Terrace all day, offenders will be towed. River Terrace at Main Street and Leopard Street at Vulture Street will be closed between 4pm and 9.30pm. Local streets linking River Terrace to Main Street will be closed between 4pm and 9.30pm, with access open to local residents only.

Mt Coot-tha and Mt Gravatt Lookouts All traffic to the Mt Coot-tha Summit must travel counter clockwise along Sir Samuel Griffith Drive under police supervision from 4.30pm. The Mt Gravatt Lookout will be closed to all traffic at Shire Road and Tenby Street between 4pm and 9pm. Echidna Magic Restaurant guests will be granted access. Access to car parks and facilities around South Bank No Parking available in Grey Street between Vulture Street and William Jolly Bridge on Saturday 29 September. Colchester Street closes all day on Saturday 29 September between Ernest and Vulture Streets. Little Stanley Street closes from midnight Thursday 27 September until 3.00pm on Sunday 30 September. On Saturday 29 September South Bank’s car park reaches ‘full’ capacity early and access is not available between 7.15pm and 9.30pm. After 7.15pm all vehicles must exit via Tribune and Vulture Streets. Brisbane Festival recommends you take advantage of the additional public transport services in place for Sunsuper Riverfire.

Stanley Place entrance, near the State Library of Queensland. QPAC ticket holders are advised to allow extra travel time. Access to BCEC car parks is via Merivale Street. Spectator vessels on the Brisbane River In the interest of public safety and in accordance with the Queensland Fireworks Code, the Brisbane River will be closed between Mowbray Park, East Brisbane and Cribb Street, Milton from 5pm until 8.45pm. Three dedicated Spectator Mooring Zones will be established in the South Brisbane and Town Reaches of the river for a limited number of private vessels who have obtained an Entry Permit Flag. Only Entry Permit Flag holders will be permitted into the closed area. Entry Permit Flag distribution occurs at South Bank on Wednesday 22 August. For more information about road, bridge and river closures visit www.brisbanefestival.com.au and tune into 104.5 Triple M for traffic updates on the day. Information for Santos GLNG City of Lights Saturday 8 - Friday 28 September Temporary closures will occur in the South Bank Reach of the river between the Victoria and Goodwill Bridges. Queensland Water Police will close and monitor the area nightly. Minor delays may be experienced on the Citycat and Cityferry services during performance times.
