“EXPECT THE UNCONVENTIONAL” Functionals offers a collection of furniture and home goods designed exclusively for us by innovative designers. Each has his or her distinctive perspective, but they share a bold aesthetic, commitment to craftsmanship, and attention to detail. We are equally detail-driven when it comes to manufacturing, packaging, and delivering our products. Our products are made to last, so they are made well. Components are made in small, but highly specialized factories in Europe and Asia, and many are finished by hand. We do much of the assembling and all the shipping at our factory and showroom in the Dutch town of Goirle. We launched Functionals as a webshop in 2009, with the Bonsai candleholder and Swivel Floor light. Our collection has grown to include tables, seats, lights, tableware, and accessories. We’ve also expanded beyond the web into retail shops across Europe and beyond. Whether you order a Functionals product online or buy one in a store, we hope to exceed your expectations. The basic form of Aron references a traditional ship lamp, and its manufacture is also rooted in tradition. It is created through metal spinning: shaping a flat disc of metal on a mold, a method first used in ancient China. The white metal dome lamp houses a glass cylinder containing the light bulb, creating intimate spots of light in any environment. The three different widths of the lamps offer various levels of diffusion. For focused light, choose the narrowest Aron 401. For a broader circle of light, opt for the wider lamps Aron 581 and 701.

Made of just three pieces of southern yellow pine, Serener’s bench is the essence of simplicity. At the same time, the design reflects sophisticated understanding of materials. Dovetail joinery allows the wood to expand, contract, and bend with changing environmental conditions. As the pieces of wood shift, they support and strengthen each other.

If you been to a working harbor, the Bolder should look familiar. Designer Chris Slutter's inspiration was the simple yet substantial mooring bollard. (Bolder is the Dutch word for bollard.) The Bolder's potential uses make playful references to maritime culture. While a bollard secures a ship in the waters of a port, water goes inside the Bolder when treated as vase. Filling the Bolder with ice to chill wine is a nod to the tradition of christening a new ship with a bottle of champagne. Bolder is made of cast aluminum and available in black.

Add serenity, grace, and refinement to a room with this tea light holder. The Bonsai reflects designer Roderick Vos's interest in Asian art and culture, and is the embodiment of his mission to "create products with magical simplicity." It also demonstrates his familiarity with cutting-edge technology...literally, in this case. The Bonsai is laser-cut from a sheet of metal and then bent mechanically into a three-dimensional form. The black powder coating gives it the look of wrought iron. Bonsai is available in a one-candle and five-candle edition.

Mia Lagerman and Ehlén Johansson's sculptural bowl is both functional and fantastic. A glass sphere nestled inside a glass ring, Bowl seems to hover above the surface of the table. The design began as a meditation on physics. How can a sphere balance on a flat surface? The end result is something that seemingly defies physics and instead moves into the realm of the magical.

Meet Functionals’s updated version of our popular Crossdock media rack. A collaboration between Functionals, designer Dick Van Hoff, and technology company ZENS, the Crossdock offers attractive storage for your magazines and books as you can now charge your tablet or smartphone wireless. The dock's form and walnut wood reference the traditional Dutch magazine rack, but the white powder-coated aluminum base is firmly rooted in the present. Van Hoff's sly message is that "antique" forms of communication like newspapers and magazines can peacefully co-exist with modern devices. The new Crossdock design integrates the signature ZENS “puk,” a wireless charger utilizing the Qi system (an industry-standard interface).

Need a good place to hang your hat, bag, umbrella, or coat? Serener’s rack is at your service. Each is made from a single sheet of metal, with the hooks laser cut and then bent with a specially designed tool. The backing is a wood plank, setting the rack off the wall so it seems to levitate. Racks come with either three or eight hooks, and are available in black, white, red and yellow. Use one in a small space or arrange multiples on a larger wall for a bold statement.

If you have stayed at the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy in Amsterdam, then you have seen this graceful table in its original habitat. Seyferth specially designed it for the hotel’s guest rooms. The table and bench, which are available in different sizes and heights, are exceptionally stable. Its flexible top allows all four legs to touch the floor even when the surface is wildly uneven. The Lloyd indoor collection is made of steel and available in six different colors of powder coating. Special sizes are available on request.

Kranen/Gille’s dimmable light fixture floats in the air just like its namesake: the airship or zeppelin of the 1930s. Nearly invisible steel wires suspend the submarine-shaped, cast aluminum body from the ceiling, while a heavy black cable tethers it to a power source. MR. ED Book-end Designer Roderick Vos Looking at his extensive library one day, Roderick Vos realized that a scattering of small lights would showcase the books and aid readers. So he designed Mr. Ed, a light bulb held in place by two vertical book-like shapes. On a bookshelf or on a bedside table, Mr. Ed has enough brute strength to act as a book-end.

Although Mr. Ed can use any 40-Watt bulb, Vos prefers an incandescent bulb for its warm glow. In fact, Vos named Mr. Ed after the inventor of the incandescent, Thomas Alva Edison. Mr. Ed is made of cast aluminum and available in black or white.

PATTERNS Linen Designer Claire Vos

PATTERNS Linen Designer Claire Vos Iconic textile motifs merge and emerge in Patterns. The tablecloth and napkins explore the innate qualities of damask cloth, one of the oldest weaving patterns in the world. For her variation, Vos has chosen a light-grey Scottish plaid that dissolves and reassembles over an expanse of cream-colored linen fabric. The plaid is large-scale in the tablecloth, and smaller in the napkins. Patterns Table linen comes in a set of one tablecloth and six napkins and is made of 50% organic cotton and 50% organic linen.

Vos’s cotton dishtowels mix and mingle three different pairs of patterns. A traditional French pattern morphs into Dutch folk art, while Scottish plaid melds into an Asian theme and a Greek key transforms into checkers. The patterns go through their choreography in graphic black and white, but a stripe of bright red, blue, or green extends across the middle. Patterns Dishtowels are sold in sets of three or per piece, and made of 100% organic cotton.

PAXTON Candleholder Design Roderick Vos Industrial and robust, Paxton stands in contrast to the traditional romantic notion of candelabra. Made of black cast aluminum, Paxton resembles “an engine, a bridge truss, or even a stealth fighter,” says creator, Roderick Vos. Paxton “could support 40 kilos,” but only needs to hold five candles.

The candleholder is a tribute to Sir Joseph Paxton, designer of the famed Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace launched the Industrial Revolution, and, in its own way, is the distant ancestor of Paxton.

Bold and versatile, Floris Hovers’ Stoklamp is a harmonious blend of three distinct components: steel base, wooden shaft, and fabric shade. SWIVEL Light Designer Dick van Hoff For one of his products to be labeled “fine craftsmanship” is the biggest compliment for Dick van Hoff. He stresses, though, that he is not interested in perfection. His products are simply made, usually of rough materials. The lamp he designed for Functionals is a striking example: it has bold lines and is made of durable powdercoated steel.

Swivel comes in a floor and wall edition. It’s frame, that can be swiveled in two places, is made of black powder coated steel tubing. The movable shade is available in black or white polyester. Swivel Floor is weight by a three-part concrete base.

TAPED Linen Designer Alissia Melka-Teichroew

Alissia Melka-Teichroew’s linen originated with a thought about boundaries. As she says, “We draw lines and perceive them as boundaries even though there is nothing physically stopping us from crossing them.” In tablecloth, napkins and dishtowels of Taped Linens, MelkaTeichroew superimposes the shape of tape pieces with their “jagged, imprecise” edges over the traditional checked patterns of woven damask. The result is at once elegant and edgy. Taped Table linen comes in a set of one tablecloth and six napkins and is made of 50% organic cotton and 50% organic linen. Taped Dishtowels are sold in a set of three or per piece, and made of 100% organic cotton.

Compact yet remarkably comfortable, Serener’s Wendela blends simplicity of form with sophistication of materials and an old-meets-new design approach. The thin, flexible seat of layered beech wood, created from a mold originally produced in the 1950s, sits upon a contemporary aluminum base, available in three heights. The visible connection between the seat and base is a reference to the joinery used in traditional carpentry. The aluminum base comes in six different colors. For the chair only, the base is also available in anodized gold. Choose a darker or lighter stain for the beech seat. All color combinations work well together. Go for a uniform look or mix it up!
