Wood – the construction material made by nature

BX01748_Holz-Brosch_GB.qxp:Brillux-Grundlinienraster

Wood: There is hardly any material which is more versatile. In both design and construction, wood plays an important role as a universally usable and renewable raw material. Its natural appearance is particularly appreciated. However, this natural appearance is also a big challenge. As a natural construction material, wood is highly demanding with a limited service life. Proper precautions – from careful design planning to regular maintenance – prevent early deterioration and contribute to conserving long-lasting value.

Different types of wood

10:36 Uhr

Seite 5

Deciduous wood such as oak or robinia has a higher gross density and is more difficult to process due to its hardness and more complex structure. A fine grain and the fact that the growth rings are very close to one another are characteristic features of deciduous wood. Tropical deciduous wood such as teak or meranti is particularly hard and long-lived. Typical features also include a distinct mostly reddish color. However, the wood will turn gray if it is not sufficiently protected. For a detailed assessment each type of wood must be considered separately. This is done using the classification according to EN 350-2. This standard categorizes different types of wood into durability classes according to their resistance to fungi.

Wood is divided in two categories: coniferous, also referred to as softwood; and deciduous, also referred to as hardwood. Typical features of coniferous wood such as pine and spruce include fast growth and homogenous structure. It is also lighter and softer than deciduous wood.

Swelling and shrinking An exact determination of the type of wood is often not possible, even for experts. However, features such as grain indicate the type and quality of the wood to be coated. When a radial or rift cut is made longitudinally through the middle of the trunk of a tree the growth rings run almost parallel. This suggests a low swelling or shrinking tendency.

Radial or rift cut

When a cross-section or endgrain cut is done perpendicularly to the trunk, the ring structure is visible. This indicates a medium tendency to swelling or shrinking.

Depending on relative humidity, the moisture content of wood adjusts to environmental climate. Variations in moisture content result in volumetric changes of the wood, referred to as swelling and shrinking. Coatings reduce or prevent these processes.

A tangential flat cut runs longitudinally outside of the middle of the trunk. Due to the tapering of the trunk the growth rings appear in a parabolic shape. Wooden structures with this visually attractive grain have a high swelling or shrinking tendency.

Cross-section or end-grain cut

In the case of extreme growth ring widths or unsuitable finger jointing, we recommend issuing a warning regarding inferior wood quality.

A matter of definition: the dimensional accuracy of wooden components/structures Choosing the right wood coating also depends on dimensional accuracy. This defines how much the dimensions of a wooden component/structure may change by shrinking or swelling. The following categories are used: components/ structures without dimensional accuracy, components/structures with limited dimensional accuracy, and dimensionally accurate components/structures. Each of these categories requires a specific coating build-up.

Dimensionally accurate wooden components/structures may change their dimensions only within a very small tolerance range. Examples of such components/structures are windows, exterior doors and accurately mortised or glued window and door shutters.

In the case of wood components/ structures with limited dimensional accuracy, dimensional changes are allowable to a limited extent. This applies to tongue and groove paneling, garden furniture, half-timbering, roof undersides and cornices as well as exterior doors, and window and door shutters unless these components are not already categorized in the dimensionally accurate group.

Components/structures without dimensional accuracy are not limited regarding volumetric changes such as swelling and shrinking. Typical examples are exterior paneling with open joints, weather boarding on lath grids, overlapping paneling, shingles, palisades, wooden grids and fences.

Wood: Natural beauty needs effective long-term protection

The natural beauty of wood used in exterior applications is endangered by UV radiation, moisture and temperature changes. Effective long-term protection requires an object-specific combination of I careful design and I chemical and I physical protection precautions.

Positive example: The wooden components/structures are well protected.

8

Wood protection by design Appropriate measures should have already been considered in the design and planning phase in order to protect wooden structures against moisture. Unobstructed draining of rain and condensation water must be guaranteed. Design or planning errors cannot be compensated for later even by using the best coating system. The following considerations are particularly important:

I

Sufficient eaves projection Roof eaves projections should be dimensioned such that wooden components/structures are protected against direct weather impact as much as possible. In areas exposed to splash water, wooden components/ structures should not be used at all. I Protecting grain-cut wood surfaces Grain-cut wood surfaces absorb moisture very easily and have a high swelling capacity. This is why grain-cut wood should not be exposed to direct weather impact.

I

Drip edges Drip edges are used for draining water as quickly as possible. I Round edges In the case of dimensionally accurate wooden structures/components such as windows all edges must be rounded in order to obtain proper edge protection with a sufficient film thickness.

I

Avoid soil contact!

Chemical wood protection

Physical wood protection

Chemical wood protection should always be used selectively and only if necessary because of the type of wood used and the object situation, and only in those areas where it is actually needed – which is deep inside the wood. For this reason the impregnation must have a high penetration capacity. This requirement is met by Impredur Wood Impregnating Primer 550 because it penetrates deeply into wood pores. Its effectiveness has been documented by the recognized RAL test institute and is certified by the RAL Quality Seal. Impredur Wood Impregnating Primer 550 is perfect for protecting non-soil contact exterior wood not exposed to static load as well as for windows and outside doors for protection against decay and blue stain.

Physical wood protection complements design measures and chemical protection. Suitable coatings are used to protect the wood against weather impact and to give the surface the desired look. You will find a selection of products for all physical wood protection requirements on pages 24 and 25 of this brochure.

to use, flow readily and contribute to effective long-term protection. Brillux wood coatings meet these requirements perfectly. Plus the complete Brillux range of aromatics-free and water-dilutable paints and varnishes clearly proves that meeting maximum quality requirements while ensuring health protection and environmental compatibility all at the same time is certainly possible.

Regardless of the requirements to be met and regardless of whether dimensionally accurate components/ structures or components/structures with limited or non-dimensional accuracy are concerned, Brillux wood coatings are high quality products which professional users can rely on when it comes to effective long-term protection and the value conservation of buildings. With dimensionally accurate components/structures, a long-life protection film which must not become brittle with age is a primary consideration. Good penetration and expansion capacity are the main requirements the coatings used for components/structures without dimensional accuracy have to meet in order to compensate for swelling and shrinking.

In an outdoor weather impact test Brillux wood coatings are applied on different types of wood and exposed to wind, rain, frost and sun for one year. The test arrangement (inclination 45째, southern orientation) simulates a normal weather exposure of about five years.

°C

Color design without risks Pigmented coating of wooden surfaces is great for effective design accents. However, strong sun impact can result in extreme heating of the wood when using dark paints and varnishes. Possible consequences of this thermal stress include cracking and resin outflow. In this situation the best long-term protection is obtained by using coatings in the light to medium color shade range.

The Brillux practice tip: lightening technique for experts In facade renovation everything has to be light and friendly. But perhaps there are dark-varnished window frames and weathered balcony balustrades and the customer wants to maintain their characteristic wood appearance. For this reason a typical covering paint coat cannot be used. There is only one solution: lightening! 1. The covering prime coat The lightening technique is used when existing dark wood structures must be adjusted to other surfaces of components/structures such as new windows or doors. Experts achieve the desired effect by applying a well-chosen combination of a covering primer coat and varnishing topcoat.

In order to obtain a uniform, bright substrate, the dark wood is first coated with a primer. We recommend Impredur Primer 835 with its excellent moisture regulating properties. It can easily be tinted using the Brillux Color System.

3. A perfect result A perfect result is obtained by the interaction of covering primer coat and varnishing topcoat.

2. The varnishing topcoat The subsequent topcoat (and intermediate coat if required) is done using a varnish which is always applied slightly streakily in the direction of the wood grain. This way the desired varnishing effect is obtained by outlining the grain. Our Permanent Protection Woodstain 580 is particularly suitable for intermediate coats and topcoats.

Our recipe for healthy wood: high-tech against UV radiation

Moisture, temperature variations and UV radiation: Exterior wooden components/structures have to take a lot. The effects of the sun are often underrated. Short-wave UV radiation impact damages the two most important constituents of wood: cellulose and lignin. UV radiation has a particularly detrimental effect on lignin which is embedded in the wood’s cellular walls like a paste and provides stability and hardness. Energy-rich UV radiation decomposes lignin over time. The consequences:

I

I I I

I

Color changes (whitish to dirtygrayish) Gloss reduction Chalking effects UV permeable coats loose adhesion and flake off Cracks form in the coat, providing points of attack for fungi which can damage the interior wood which was initially only surfacedamaged

Three-fold long-term protection

Thanks to their special pigmentation all Brillux varnishes provide very good protection against sun impact despite their uniform transparency. Permanent Protection Woodstain 580 features additional protection against UV radiation, which makes it the perfect solution when it comes to effective long-term protection:

I

Wood turned gray as a result of UV radiation and poor design.

14

Equipped with anti-UV pigments Additional UV absorbers filter the radiation which damages wood. Highly effective additives allow visible light to enter and ensure that varnish and color are not affected. So-called radical traps minimize decay processes in both the varnish film and wood cells. Untreated wood can quickly turn gray as a result of UV radiation and poor architectural design.

Before it gets too moldy: Brillux Protect Surface fungi spreading on facade surfaces and roof undersides create flaws strongly affecting the general appearance of a building.

In addition to soiling, microorganisms are more and more a problem for exterior surfaces. Due to the reduced SO2 concentration of the air and the escalation of airborne nitrogen combinations, facades, roof undersides and other structures are increasingly being attacked by algae and fungi. These can affect visual appearance significantly, which could result in them possibly being regarded as a flaw and lead to legal action. Protection against algae and fungal attack is not only good for the appearance of your facade but also conserves the value of the whole house. Potentially endangered facades should be identified as early as possible in order to take appropriate preventive action. Protect, the flexible protection concept by Brillux, provides film protection of the facade coating for many different types of surfaces including wood.

Important standards and rules for wood coating There is a range of standards and rules regulating new and refurbishment coatings for exterior wood components/structures. They provide information on the special properties of wood substrates and the effect of different coating materials, indicate testing methods, provide processing/application tips and specify the measures to be taken in certain situations at certain times. In addition to these standards the applicable local legal requirements of the country where the products are used must be met. DIN EN 350-2 DIN EN 350-2 (Durability of wood and wood-based products - Natural durability of solid wood) divides wood types into classes according to their resistance to wood-destroying fungi, microorganisms and insects (also refer to the table on page 5).

Perfect coating down to bare wood

Regardless of whether a wooden component/structure is varnished or provided with a covering coat, successful renovation depends on perfect preparation. Perfect preparation starts with careful inspection of the substrate. What type of existing coat is it? What about the bearing capacity? Is the moisture content of the wood okay? The topcoat color can also have a significant influence on the weather resistance of 1. Nitro test the coating. Is the chosen color the right one for this application? Let's One way of identifying the type of look at this step by step. existing coat is the so-called nitro test. In this test the surface is wetted with Nitro Thinner 456. If the existing coat dissolves significantly, it is a physically drying system, e.g. a polymer resin or dispersion coating. If it does not dissolve or if it only dissolves a little bit, this is a sign of a chemically hardening system, e.g. based on alkyd resin paint.

2. Bearing capacity

3. Moisture content

To check the bearing capacity of the existing coat, a scratch test is widely used. The surface is scratched using a scraper or knife and then an adhesive tape is pressed on firmly and pulled off quickly. If the coating does not withstand this test, it must be removed. In the case of varnished wood, a wet cloth is placed on the surface to check if the existing paint coat and/or the wood have effloresced. If a moist, dark stain forms in the wood after a short time, the weathered wood/coat must be removed down to the bare wood.

The moisture content of wood is a particularly critical issue. The following limits are permissible before coating deciduous and coniferous wood: Dimensionally accurate components/structures: 13 % Âą 2 %. Components/structures with limited or without dimensional accuracy: < 18 %. The current value can be determined using our Brillux moisture meter. 4. Decay or insect infestation Are there signs of decay or insect infestation? If so any damaged wooden components/structures must be replaced.

Perfect renovating: Proper preparation is everything How to prepare the job properly

1. Putty or sealing materials

Perfect renovation coating is always the result of careful preparation. With dimensionally accurate wooden components/structures it is crucial that the surfaces to be coated are carefully prepared to ensure that the coating build-up will result in a closed surface.

Remove defective sealing materials using a cup cut knife; in the case of single glazing remove defective putty using a hacking knife. 2. Sanding First grayed wood and bearing old coats are uniformly sanded using delta grinder Festool Deltex DX 93 E-Plus 3241.

As good as new: renovating using covering coatings In the case of covering coating a closed glossy or silk-glossy surface is favored over the typical character of the wood structure. These coatings – in particular in light colors – provide wooden windows and exterior doors with the most reliable long-term protection against many types of exposure. 1. Impregnation

3. Extending open corner connections Cracked corner connections must be extended to obtain a joint about five mm. wide. The joint can be filled using Window Repair Sealer 399 after applying the intermediate coat.

After pretreatment raw wood is prepared for the subsequent coating build-up using Impredur Wood Impregnating Primer 550. This deep-penetrating, moisture-regulating impregnation protects wood against blue stain and decay. 2. Primer and intermediate coat

For varnish coating:

Old, non-bearing varnish coats must be removed carefully. A paint scraper is the perfect tool for doing this. Scraping should always be done in the direction of the grain.

Priming and intermediate coating using Impredur Primer 835 or Impredur Ventipaint 822 supports the moisture-regulating effect perfectly. Both products are characterized by excellent adhesiveness and particularly good filling and covering capacity.

2. Sanding

3. Glass sealing – single glazing

Then the surface must be sanded thoroughly. As an alternative to a sander a bench grinder may be used.

With single-glaze windows, putty must be replaced by suitable sealers after applying primer and an intermediate coat. Modern special sealers such as Window Repair Sealer 399 can be painted over easily after allowing them to cure for about three days.

1. Remove old varnish coats

Natural wood: renovating with varnish coatings

2. Primer, intermediate and topcoat

A varnish coating build-up is ideal for maintaining the natural appearance of wood surfaces. Available coloration ranges from subtle pigmentation in natural wood shades to strong, modern colors.

The primer, intermediate and topcoat are applied, depending on requirements and selection, using Permanent Protection Woodstain 580 or Lacryl Woodstain 235. Special bonding agents and pigments guarantee many years of durable weather protection. (For a detailed description of Brillux woodstains, refer to pages 24 and 25).

5. Topcoat 1. Impregnation Brillux offers a wide range of covering products in different gloss grades for topcoats which meet both decorative and protective requirements (also refer to the table on pages 24 and 25). 6. Glass sealing modern windows Sealing glass terminations and seals is done after finishing all paint work and allowing the coating to cure thoroughly, using a permanently elastic silicone sealer such as Neutral Silicone 386.

After pretreatment the wood is prepared for the subsequent coating build-up using Impredur Wood Impregnating Primer 550. This deep-penetrating, moisture-regulating impregnation protects the wood against blue stain and decay.

Diffusibility/moisture regulation

Penetration

Wherever moisture can penetrate wood via structural joints which cannot be eliminated, moisture compensation should be ensured by proper coating. This applies in particular to components/structures without/with limited dimensional accuracy, such as fences, paneling and roof undersides. When coating half-timbering, clear requirements are defined regarding water vapor diffusion resistance – an Sd value of ≤ 0.5 m, according to WTA Leaflet 8-7-98/D: Coating of half-timber walls – wood. This value ensures largely unobstructed diffusion of water penetrating via the structure.

Penetration depth is a crucial quality criterion for any impregnation to successfully provide blue stain and decay protection. The bonding agent basis of the product has a major influence on penetration capacity. Due to the much smaller molecules (up to about 10 nm), genuine alkyd resin solutions penetrate wood pores much deeper than acrylates, for example, which are available in colloidal-dissolved or emulsified form and have a molecule size between 100 and 1.000 nm (see illustration).

Maintenance and service Many home owners don’t realize what is a matter of fact to experts wood coatings don’t last forever. Depending on exposure, object conditions and coating, maintenance measures may have to already be taken after only one or two years. In some situations maintenance may only be required after eight to ten years in order to preserve the value of a wooden component/structure. By providing expert information and entering into responsible maintenance agreements, companies can earn a good reputation and improve their future prospects of success, both at the same time.

++ Energy-rich UV radiation has negative effects not only outside but also inside. An example is unwanted color changes which can be seen on walls when shifting furniture. With its special UV absorbers for interior applications Brillux has developed a technology which largely prevents the darkening and yellowing of wood.

The UV absorbing clear varnishes Lacryl-PU Wood Sealer 262 and 264 are most effective if applied on previously untreated surfaces so the original color can be maintained. In exterior applications standard clear varnishes as well as colorless varnishes just don’t provide sufficient UV protection due to the additional weather exposure.
