Message from the Head of College

Dear Parents,

I hope that everyone enjoyed a restful and enjoyable half-term break.

It has been an enjoyable return to school for us, especially given the energetic start to the second half of term. Today, our Senior School pupils have been taking part in the Cognita Games, alongside pupils from Brighton College Singapore, AIS, SAIS and Stamford American International School Hong Kong.

The competition has included basketball, football and badminton and the Games began this morning with an opening ceremony. We were delighted to welcome Dan Norton as guest of honour, who spoke to all the participants about what sport has taught him over the course of his 15-year career representing England in rugby sevens. The Games continues tomorrow; well done to all the pupils and staff involved and thank you to the many parents who came along to support.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents for the information you share with one another through class WhatsApp groups. We know how useful and important these groups are, particularly in helping parents stay connected, and we are especially grateful to the class representatives who help to host and support them. Following a few recent requests, I would like to remind all parents that these groups are very helpful for sharing information, but that any specific questions or concerns about your child’s experience at school should be shared directly with us, either through your child’s class teacher or a member of the senior team. As we do not monitor the WhatsApp groups, we may not otherwise be aware of an issue, which makes it harder for us to help resolve it. Thank you, as always, for your support and understanding.

Finally, we are now entering the final four weeks of term and there is a great deal to look forward to for both the Prep and Senior School children; please do keep a close eye on the calendar section of the newsletter for updates about forthcoming events. In particular, I would like to remind Senior School parents that our annual Senior School Prize Giving and Sports Awards will take place in the evening of the 19th June. This year’s guest speaker will be Mr Robert Swan, polar explorer. We would be delighted to see as many Senior School parents as possible attend this important celebration of the year’s achievements.

Dear Brighton College Community,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating half term break. Walking through the gates on Monday morning, it was clear that the children were excited to return to school to see their friends and get back to learning. There is no better feeling than seeing the genuine excitement on our pupils’ faces as they return to school, ready to dive into the final stretch of the academic year.

We have a packed calendar ahead of us, filled with incredible activities and events designed to ensure we finish this year on an absolute blast!

This Week’s Highlights:

1. A Warm Return to School: The collective enthusiasm from both pupils and staff as we kicked off this final half term has been wonderful to witness. It is a beautiful reminder of the tight knit, positive community we share. Over the next few weeks, our focus is on keeping expectations high, pushing for those final milestones and successes, and celebrating the immense progress made across the year.

2. Year 3 Wild Adventures at the Zoo: Just before the break, our Year 3 pupils embarked on their residential camp to the Singapore Zoo, and it was a monumental hit! The experience provided a brilliant blend of hands on, real world learning and pure fun while creating lifelong memories. This was a true highlight for the children this year.

3. Say Something Nice Day: This week we celebrated Say Something Nice Day, an initiative that beautifully spotlighted the exceptional culture of “Kindness” that defines Brighton College (Singapore). The school was filled with thoughtful compliments, uplifting notes, and spontaneous words of encouragement between peers. It is moments like these that showcase the caring, nurturing, and empathetic nature of our pupils as they genuinely look out for one another.

As we navigate this busy and exciting final half term, thank you for your unwavering partnership. Let’s make these final weeks incredibly memorable for our children.

Brighton International Fair - Parent Volunteers Needed

We are looking for parent volunteers who can spare some time between 11.00 am and 2.00 pm on Thursday, 18 June, to support this parent-led event. Interested parents are welcome to contact your Community Engagement Lead, Katelin Teo, at katelin.teo@brightoncollege.edu.sg.

Reminder: Important Safeguarding Expectation

Please be reminded of an important safeguarding expectation regarding pupils’ arrival and departure times at the start and end of the school day.

Keeping pupils safe is our absolute priority. In order to maintain clear supervision and ensure we can account for all pupils at all times, we would like to clarify the school’s expectations:

Morning arrival

Pupils may arrive on site from 8:20am onwards, unless they are attending a scheduled extra-curricular activity or supervised commitment arranged by a member of BCS staff which requires an earlier arrival.

End-of-day departure

All pupils are expected to leave the school site by 4:30pm. Any pupil remaining on site after 4:30pm must be under the direct supervision of a parent or carer, or attending a supervised school activity or club.

As a shared site with many moving parts throughout the day, it is essential that pupils are not on site unsupervised before or after the school day. When pupils arrive early or remain late without an agreed supervised arrangement, we cannot guarantee their safety or account for their whereabouts, which presents a significant safeguarding concern.

We would be grateful for your support in reinforcing these routines with your child and ensuring they arrive and depart within the times stated above.

Reminders

Loco Parentis

If all parents / legal guardians are out of the country for up to seven days, an In Loco Parentis form needs to be completed. This will provide contact details for the designated guardian for that period of time. Forms can be found on the Parent Portal.

Guardianship Forms

Some parents / legal guardians may work away from Singapore on a more permanent basis. If all legal guardians for a child are out of country for longer than 7 days, a guardian must be appointed to provide the necessary care of the child. There are two forms that need to be completed. One by the parent and one by the guardian. The forms can be found on the Parent Portal.

Contact Information

We ask that all parents / guardians keep the school updated with changes to phone numbers, addresses and email addresses. In the case of an emergency, the school needs this information to be up to date. All pupils need to have two emergency contacts. These points of contact must have Singaporean phone numbers. If your phone number or address changes, please do send an update to reception@brightoncollege.edu.sg

Keeping Our Pupils Safe: A Nut-Free Campus Reminder

This is a gentle reminder to support the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, particularly those with severe allergies. We kindly ask that you do not pack any food or snacks containing nuts or nut-based products in your child’s snack/lunchbox. This includes items such as peanut butter, Nutella, biscuits and any products that may contain traces of nuts. Should you plan on sending a birthday cake to celebrate your child’s special day, please be aware of the following requirements - all cakes brought into school must be completely nut-free, individually wrapped per portion, and accompanied by a full ingredients lis t, shared with the class teacher prior to the celebration We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Junior Prep Art Exhibition

We warmly invite all parents to our Junior Prep Art Exhibition, a celebration of creativity and imagination. Every pupil from Pre-Nursery to Year 4 has contributed artwork to this special event. The exhibition will open with a welcome and pupil-guided tour from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Parents are also welcome to visit at any time between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to explore the exhibition at their own pace. We look forward to sharing the wonderful artistic journey of our young learners with you.

Series of Grand IMP Informal Recitals at Brighton College (Singapore)

Year 3 Residential Trip to Singapore Zoo

Watching our Year 3s come back from Singapore Zoo was something special. They arrived nervous - some had never spent a night away from home - but by the end, they were unpacking stories about pitching tents, spotting orangutans, and sleeping under the stars like it was the most natural thing in the world.

What really stood out was how they looked out for each other. They collaborated on everything, from setting up camp to tackling team challenges, and you could see friendships deepening in real time. They asked brilliant questions about the animals, got genuinely excited about conservation, and left understanding why protecting our natural world matters. A few even said the Night Safari was the best thing they’ve ever done!

Of course, not everyone slept soundlysome tents were suspiciously lively well past lights out at 10.30pm! But even the blearyeyed ones were up and ready for breakfast by 7.30am, which is a win in anyone’s book.

They came back like intrepid campers - tired but absolutely glowing with anecdotes from their very first residential trip. The Year 3 Team are so proud of their courage and resilience from this fantastic experience.

Celebrating Achievement: Class Assemblies by 4KW

and 4JH

Pupils, staff and families recently enjoyed two uplifting and reflective class assemblies presented by 4KW and 4JH, celebrating the Pelican value of Achievement. Both classes spoke confidently and thoughtfully as they looked back on the year and celebrated how much they have grown, both individually and together as a class community. The assemblies gave pupils the opportunity to reflect on the many achievements they have experienced throughout the year - in the classroom, through friendships, in sport, music and hobbies, and in the many challenges they have overcome along the way. The pupils shared how achievement is not only about reaching goals, but also about the effort, determination and resilience shown throughout the journey.

A particularly special part of the assemblies was a class poem reflecting on memories from Year 4 while looking ahead with excitement to Year 5. Through the poem, the pupils shared their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the adventures that lie ahead, bringing their presentations to a thoughtful and optimistic close. In 4KW, we were treated to some brave and talented musical performances, with pupils confidently sharing their musical skills with the audience. In 4JH, the class performed a song together, with the lyrics “One more step along the world I go” perfectly capturing the spirit of the assembly.

A special thank you goes to Mr. Stratford for his support with the musical elements of both assemblies, helping the pupils perform with such confidence and enthusiasm. Well done to all the pupils in 4KW and 4JH for delivering such positive, reflective, and inspiring assemblies.

Year 5 International Athletics Meet at UWC

While the ACSIS season may have come to an end, sport at BCS is still very much alive and thriving!

This week, a group of our Year 5 students attended the U11 International Athletics Meet at UWCSEA, joining pupils from schools including Tanglin Trust, Nexus and UWCSEA for an afternoon of athletics, friendship and fun. The children participated in seven different athletic events, including a variety of running, jumping and throwing activities, and proudly received certificates to recognise their involvement.

Most importantly, the event provided our pupils with the opportunity to experience competition in a positive and supportive environment, build confidence, try new events and represent BCS with enthusiasm and excellent sportsmanship. The smiles on display said it all!

First Inter-Cognita Robotics Challenge

On Friday 5th June, 10 pupils from our Senior School took part in the inaugural Inter-Cognita Robotics Challenge, hosted at the Stamford American Innovation Centre.

Bringing together pupils from across the Cognita network, the competition challenged teams to design, build, code, and test robotic solutions to a complex problem. Throughout the day, our pupils applied their learning in authentic and meaningful ways, combining creativity, computational thinking, engineering and problem-solving to tackle this complex challenge.

What was particularly pleasing to see was how our pupils embodied the BCS values throughout the event. Their curiosity drove them to explore new ideas, test different approaches, and refine their solutions. Their confidence enabled them to tackle unfamiliar challenges and communicate their thinking clearly. Most importantly, their kindness shone through in the way they supported one another, collaborated effectively and engaged positively with pupils from other schools.

Competitions such as this are about far more than robotics. They provide opportunities for pupils to think critically, work collaboratively, learn from setbacks, and apply their knowledge in new contexts. Throughout the challenge, pupils experienced the iterative nature of design and engineering, testing ideas, learning from mistakes and continuously improving their solutions.

As technology continues to shape the world around us, experiences such as these help pupils develop the skills and dispositions that will serve them well in the future. The ability to think critically and creatively, to solve problems, work effectively with others and adapt to new challenges is becoming increasingly important across all fields and professions.

We are incredibly proud of the way our pupils represented BCS throughout the event. They demonstrated enthusiasm, resilience and a genuine willingness to learn, embracing every challenge with positivity and determination.

A huge thank you to all the participating schools for and to the Stamford Robotics Team for organising such a fantastic event. We look forward to seeing the Inter-Cognita Robotics Challenge continue to grow and to providing more opportunities for BCS pupils to deepen their understanding of Robotics and Engineering.

Singapore Premier Youth Basketbal l

Congratulations to Jack Mitchell (7MOC) on an outstanding basketball season in the Singapore Premier Youth Basketball Competitions.

Competing in both the Under-12 and Under-14 leagues, Jack enjoyed success across both age groups. His Under-12 team secured the championship title, winning a closely contested final to take home the gold medal.

Meanwhile, his Under-14 team also reached the final, earning a well-deserved silver medal after another competitive match.

A fantastic achievement that reflects Jack’s dedication, teamwork and sporting spirit.

Design and Technology

Did You Know?

Did you know we’ve been working really hard to raise awareness around sustainability and reduce waste at BCS this year?

So far this year we have:

1. Placed scrap paper boxes in all classrooms and had pupils lead assemblies on how best these should be used.

2. Placed paper and plastic recycling bins on all floors.

3. Implemented ‘No Waste Wednesdays’ to reduce waste from snacks at break time.

4. Raised awareness around what we are doing in school to promote sustainability through ‘Did you know?’ statements in the newsletter (such as this!)

5. Run a whole week of activities across the whole school to celebrate ‘Earth Day’, including pupils writing their own pledges, ‘Earth Hour’, dress up day and a logo competition.

6. Launched a ‘Think before you print’ campaign to all members of staff.

7. Organised a book swap (‘readcycle’) during World Book Day where 160 books were swapped!

8. Run a pre-loved uniform shop thanks to our parent volunteers.
