English Literature (CIE 0475) Summer Task: Preparation for Prose Study of Brooklyn. 1. Read Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín. (I have given these to pupils in the last week of term. You may be able to find an audiobook to read along with if helpful!) Keep a simple reading journal. o o o o

What happened? A memorable quotation. A character who interested you. A prediction or question.

We will be reading this and studying it together in class. Reading it as a ‘first read’ before this will be very useful. Over the two year course of IGCSE English Literature, you will need to reread this book many times.

2. Watch videos on YouTube about the text. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewJ-1nZaWUY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ581QxdDUI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0TpzNq8KeI

3. Read around the context of 1950s Ireland and Irish immigration to America. https://time.com/4097071/brooklyn-irish-immigrants-history/ https://chroniclesmagazine.org/web/brooklyn-in-the-1950s-an-america-that-livesonly-in-memory/
