LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

S

CBIZ hosts a range of events throughout the year, each serving a distinct audience and purpose.

Best Places to Work in South Carolina remains one of the most significant. In 2026, the program again recognizes employers across the state for their commitment to building strong, effective workplaces. This award signifies more than business performance. It highlights the people, workplace cultures and leadership practices that help strengthen South Carolina’s economy. This year’s honorees represent a broad mix Ben Jacobs of industries, sizes and communities. What they share is a demonstrated commitment to creating environments where employees can contribute, grow and succeed. The recognition is based on a thorough evaluation process. Each nominated company is reviewed on workplace policies, practices and demographics, which account for about 25% of the overall score. Employee surveys make up the remaining 75%, providing direct insight into the workplace experience. The combined results determine the top companies and final rankings. For the companies recognized in 2026, this honor reflects a sustained commitment to people, culture and long-term performance.

#1 LARGE COMPANY Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc. Weston & Sampson Engineers is a multidisciplinary firm committed to providing innovative solutions for infrastructure challenges. The organization emphasizes a people-first culture, fostering a collaborative environment where employees feel valued and respected. It turned its own name into a recognition system: Winter Westys honor projects that drive results, while Summer Sammys celebrate employees who go above and beyond, both playing on the firm’s founders more than a century after it opened in 1899. That history now includes a structural shift: in 2023, the multidisciplinary engineering and environmental firm became 100% employ-

ee owned, putting more than 1,000 professionals along the East Coast in direct control of the company’s future. An IDEA committee marks Black History Month, International Women’s History Month and similar observances all year. Semi-retirement options let older employees scale back gradually, and generational training helps age groups collaborate rather than talk past each other. With competitive benefits and community engagement efforts, Weston & Sampson creates a workplace where staff can thrive, feel supported, advance their careers and contribute to meaningful projects. AMAROK

Life Cycle Engineering

Somewhere at AMAROK, a service van is reigning as Van of the Month, one of the more literal recognition categories at this company headquartered in Columbia that protects property nationwide through electric perimeter security. About 120 employees ran in last year’s Cooper River Bridge Run, one of several group events it sponsors that boost cameraderie. Points earned through NectarHR shout-outs convert into swag rather than sitting as empty praise. Website: amarok.com

Life Cycle Engineering, a consulting, engineering, IT and education firm founded in 1976, has built more than a third of its workforce from veterans, recruiting through the Pentagon’s SkillBridge program and a dedicated veterans employee group. That same long view shapes its culture: employees own stakes through stock ownership that vests over time, and tenured staff nearing retirement can shift to part time. An internal chat channel gives staff a place to swap chatter daily. Website: lce.com

5 LARGE Sentar

When someone at Sentar closes a big deal or hits a milestone, they strike a gong on the office rooftop overlooking the Cooper River in Charlestom. That’s fitting for the defense contractor now structured as an employee-owned company that gives every worker a stake at no cost. Veterans receive a pay differential during military leave, part of a workforce recruited through Hire Our Heroes partnerships. Spot bonuses reward employees who go beyond for stakeholders. Find Great People

Countybank

SC Education Lottery

At Find Great People, standout employees are called Rockstars, announced during companywide huddles with testimonials colleagues and clients penned. The veteran-owned small business has spent four decades evolving from a staffing outfit into a broader talent practice. Wellness credits worth up to $300 help employees pay for mortgage advice or weightloss coaching, their choice. Quarterly coffee carts and coworker “gratitude grams” make appreciation routine. Website: fgp.com

Countybank is a community-oriented financial institution serving the Upstate. It treats employee feedback as an operating input, not just a formality: a March 2026 culture survey drew 98% participation, and leadership uses listening sessions to shape real changes to onboarding and internal communication. That responsiveness shows in results, with 90% of employees reporting high engagement and only 7% turnover. Even IT security is rewarded with employees who pass tests entered into cash drawings. Website: ecountybank.com

The South Carolina Education Lottery is dedicated to supporting education in the state through responsible gaming. It has generated more than $9.3 billion for education since its founding nearly 25 years ago, funding scholarships, grants and school programs statewide. A group called the Fun Squad runs recurring events like adult trick-or-treating at Halloween and POPCORN Thursdays. Employees also receive handwritten notes from the CEO on Employee Appreciation Day. CF Evans Construction

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) is dedicated to advancing professional licensure standards in the engineering and surveying fields. Employees are treated to quarterly pauses called Wellness Rhythm Resets, which are scheduled dance and exercise breaks built into the workday. That structured approach to wellbeing supports its serious company mission. Puzzle and relaxation stations also give staff an easy way to decompress between tasks. Website: ncees.org

Thornwell, a 150-yearold nonprofit serving children and families through foster care, family preservation and residential programs, sometimes grants employees a surprise day off with no advance warning, announced right on the spot. Weekly employee shoutouts keep recognition frequent rather than annual, and staff compete in silly contests around Christmas alongside a holiday cash bonus. That mix of unpredictability and structure defines daily life at the organization. Website: thornwell.org

CF Evans Construction specializes in providing quality construction services across the Southeast, focusing on multifamily and senior living projects. It lets senior executives step back gradually through soft retirements and succession plans are revisited every six months to catch approaching departures early. Upstate Federal Credit Union

Frampton Construction Company

Greenville Federal Credit Union has been serving its community since 1968. Founded by nine schoolteachers, the credit union channels that same instinct into Learning League, where seasoned employees are trained to mentor brand new hires. A STAR Committee provides a formal channel for improvements. Also, instead of once a year, employees are rewarded through a gamification points system, alongside intranet praise employees post about each other year round. Website: greenvillefcu.com

Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union traces origins to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Credit Union, a heritage honored through its “Preserving our Past” mission and a scholarship for military students. It contributes seven percent of salary to retirement accounts after one year of service, plus a match of up to three percent. Employees nearing retirement are offered part-time positions as an accommodation, while staff-nominated Limelight Program honors colleagues on core values. Website: carolinatrust.org

Upstate Federal Credit Union is committed to improving the financial lives of its members while fostering a positive workplace. Greenville Country Club is one of the premier private clubs in the Southeast, dedicated to providing exceptional member experiences. The club fosters a supportive environment that promotes from within rather than filling leadership roles externally, giving staff a real path from entry level into management. At Mankiewicz Coatings, 40% of new hires arrive through employee referrals, with each one earning the referring staff member a $1,000 bonus once the new hire reaches six months of employment. Employees curious about another department can test it out through Mankiewicz University, a six-Saturday rotation compensated at overtime rates. Merit Technologies provides managed IT support services, including dedicated provider support, virtual CIO work, data security and software as a service, aimed at clients hoping to lower their infrastructure costs. One of its employee recognitions is named the Hacksaw Ridge Award, a nod to relentless effort borrowed from the war film’s title. The office stays pet friendly on casual Fridays, and a monthly drawing called Merit Miles hands out $50 Amazon gift cards to lucky winners. Website: merittechnologies.com

Custom Demo & Dismantling spends its days tearing structures down, but talks internally about building instead: careers, trust and a team that sticks together on commercial and industrial demolition jobs. Coworkers watch out for a superintendent who uses a wheelchair, with the company making whatever accommodations the job requires. Pets are welcome in the office, and years of employment are marked with appreciation dinners rather than a passing mention. Website: customdemodismantling.com

Tideline CPA Group, LLC partners personally grill lunch for staff on the last Friday of every single month, and every Tuesday the firm buys lunch from whichever local restaurant employees choose to pick during that particular week. reat organizations don’t wait for the future. They build leaders who can shape it. That’s the work of Furman’s Center for Innovative Leadership (CIL). The CIL exists at the intersection of applied learning and real organizational impact. We develop leaders who know how to navigate complexity and bring their teams with them to drive innovation. We use hands-on, experiential learning built around your actual challenges. For organizations, we design and deliver custom programs scaled to fit goals, culture and your competitive landscape. Whether you’re a 20-person firm or a global manufacturer with an Upstate footprint, the CIL builds something that fits.

For individual professionals, we offer programs designed to build leadership capability at every career stage, from emerging supervisors to senior executives. Some of these programs also offer pathways to graduate degrees. Our expertise is globally recognized but regionally grounded. Instructors are Upstate leaders, practitioners and subject matter experts who understand this market, our industries and the realworld conditions your people operate in every day. Clients like Michelin, Milliken, BMW and Bosch have trusted the CIL to develop their leadership pipelines. Let’s put that same momentum to work in your organization.
