Bassett Furniture’s next steps include a new High Point Market showroom By Cindy W. Hodnett Executive Editor
AT THE MARKET — As High Point Market opens this week, Bassett Furniture has a new home. In a move that CEO Robert Spilman Jr. references as part of Bassett’s forward-facing strategy, the upholstery and case goods manufacturer and retailer will welcome buyers to a new 44,000-square-foot showroom that starts with an entrance in the previous
Lane Venture showroom on the first floor in the International Home Furnishings Center and then expands to 40,000 square feet on the second floor. The two brands will be co-located in the new space, creating a synergy that Spilman said offers exceptional opportunities. “The goal for completion of the construction is September 21,” Spilman said during a recent visit to the underconstruction site. “That will give us continued on page 02

AT THE MARKET — At this week’s High Point Market, Kincaid Custom Upholstery is welcoming market attendees to a new 12,000-square-foot showroom at 311 N. Hamilton St. in downtown High Point. Located in the heart of the High Point Market design district, the showroom shares the building with Valdese Weavers and is part of a completely reimagined space that also includes MT Companies. “This showroom represents the next
chapter for Kincaid Upholstery and the kind of welcome we want to extend to every customer who walks through our doors,” said Max Dyer, the company’s CEO. “We are creating a home where retailers, professional interior designers and others in the trade can experience our products in an inspiring environment, build relationships with our team and see firsthand the quality, comfort and long-term value that define Kincaid.” At High Point Market, the company will present a mix of new introductions and inline products, with eight-way hand-tied construction and four-way fabric matching among the hallmarks of the line. Kincaid’s seating also features Worry-Free cushioning and lifetime war-

Banner House eyes broadened buyer reach with 4 brands With American Drew, Kincaid on board, company expands into premium price points By Spencer Musick Senior Editor
AT THE MARKET — With Kincaid and American Drew now under its banner, Banner House sees an opportunity to reach further across the retail landscape, from buyers shopping middle price points to premium dealers and designers looking for a more elevated case goods story. The acquisition brings the two former La-Z-Boy case goods brands into a four-brand portfolio alongside Magnussen and Pulaski. For Banner House President Doug Townsend, the fit is both strategic and practical. “They fit perfectly into our current portfolio,” Townsend said. “They bring us into premium, upper price points where

continued from page 1 three weeks until market to get everything in and ready to go. “We’ll have our own Interhall kind of design space in the showroom and we’re going to have a more robust space for hospitality,” he said. “It mirrors what we’ve done with our stores, merchandising, photography and the website. The attempt is to put a more stylish, upscale designer venue across the whole effort, one that is reflective of the best customers and consumers in the market.” The onsite tour of the new space offered a preview of what’s to come. Substantial windows that were bricked over will be uncovered once again, some 124 columns will be incorporated into the floorplan, and an abundance of natural light will flood the interior, illuminating numerous furniture introductions along with interior designer resources, hospitality collections and even a gazebo that will lead the way to the Lane Venture line. we just weren’t participating before. American Drew and Kincaid are known as luxury, premium brands. They’re reliable, and on the Kincaid side, there’s the solid wood story. There aren’t a lot of true solid wood suppliers out there.” For Kincaid, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary, the deal also places the brand inside a company devoted to case goods. “With Banner House, we’re now under a company that is truly a case goods company,” said Tim Annas, vice president of merchandising. “We can further the brand for the next — hopefully — 80 or more years, continuing the solid wood story we’ve had for so long and continuing that tradition of quality.”

access to upholstery selections, while a coffee/bar area allows buyers to enjoy a brief respite while sourcing for clients and stores. Spilman noted that bringing the company’s presence at market “up to speed” is a primary goal for the new showroom space. Bassett has retail stores in 22 states in the U.S. — five in North Carolina alone — and while the company is planning to continue expansion of its retail presence now and in the future, Spilman said that it is also the right time to enhance the wholesale operation. “At the core of it all, we are a furniture manufacturer, a retail source and a brand. There are so many assets out there in the marketplace and no barriers anymore; you have to be out there in front of virtually every channel,” he said. “Being in retail for 27 years is not an easy thing to pull off, and a big part of that success is pulling together across all platforms.” Expanded audience goals Although Bassett has been a known brand for more than a century, significant potential for market share growth re-
The combined portfolio gives Banner House what its executives described as a larger toolbox, with brands covering distinct price points and product positions while sharing operational resources. “We’re going to have all four brands under one showroom,” Townsend said. “As a retailer, you can come to one place. If you just want to shop the middle price point brands, Magnussen and Pulaski, you can shop those. If you want to shop the premium brands, you can shop those. If you want to look at all four, you can spend all day and have coffee and lunch — the whole thing.” Townsend said that range should make Banner House eas-
ier not only to shop, but also to buy. Retailers can mix products into containers from Vietnam or draw from the company’s two East Coast warehouses, with American Drew and Kincaid served from Lenoir, N.C., and Magnussen and Pulaski from South Carolina. “We create an offering that is compelling for our customers to shop and makes it easier for them to shop,” he said. “In addition, it’s easier to buy because you can mix all these different things into one container, or you can ship them out of the two East Coast warehouses we have.” The premium brands can also introduce the rest of Banner House to buyers it had not previously served. “It gives the rest of Banner
House access to customers who are already buying the premium brands, and we would want to expand that customer base with American Drew and Kincaid,” Townsend said. “There’s good cross-selling we can do among all the different brands.”
mains, according to Spilman. Expanding the company’s base of designers is one goal, as is increasing the hospitality category. “Bringing more designers into our universe is one way we’re planning to grow,” he said. “And we’ve taken steps to create a more robust social media platform with recent staff additions. We have a good, young team we’ve put together, and they’re going to help us grow our message.” Although macroeconomic challenges have dampened what started out to be a positive outlook for many furniture manufacturers in early 2026, Spilman noted that there are numerous reasons to be optimistic about the future for home furnishings. “There is going to be the largest transfer of wealth we’ve seen as the Baby Boomers age and the next generations inherit, and I think the housing situation will get worked out as this generational shift occurs,” he said. “Therein lies the future.” And with that eye on the future, the next generation of
Bassett employees includes team members with specific skillsets that help the company reach a new, highly educated consumer that often comes into a Bassett store and asks for products by name. “For six, seven quarters in a row, we’ve seen over a 30% increase in sales through our web channel. We are a 125-year-old company, but the website is the front door to our brand, and we understand its power,” Spilman said. “We are starting to use our brand as an effective weapon to target customers who have a high proclivity to buy Bassett.” The interplay of leveraging legacy and technology to serve a new, highly informed and evolving consumer is a core part of Bassett’s forward strategy and like many industry leaders, Spilman is weaving a new fabric of operations that includes past, present and what might be the future. He believes that the inherent authenticity of the Bassett brand — one that includes the founding of a town around the factory as well as the wealth generation the company created for employees — is a
message that is meaningful to consumers and complements initiatives like the new showroom where storytelling is part of the presentation. “Technology like AI is going to play a bigger role in every part of life, and I think figuring out how to do it right is a key focus for most companies right now,” said Spilman. “It keeps you connected and relevant, from both a style and branding point of view.” Equally important for Bassett’s near future is the launch of the High Point Market showroom, underscoring a substantial commitment to physical markets and the value of faceto-face interactions. “We definitely would not be undertaking a new showroom unless we believed in the viability of High Point Market and what it brings to the industry,” Spilman said. “It has transformed mightily in my time, but the epicenter of the home furnishings industry is here. With this new showroom, we can provide for the betterment of the companies and support the market for many years to come.”
Solid wood story forward
For Fred Schubert, vice president of product development, expanding Kincaid does not mean abandoning the qualities that have sustained it for eight decades. Instead, Banner House plans to use its broader resources to push that identity into territory with relatively little competition: modern solid wood furniture. “Kincaid has a history we continued on page 10

Woodard says its sees moving into the space as a way to reintroduce the brand to High Point buyers. “We are looking forward to being back in High Point this fall, in a space right next to Dedon and Gloster,” said Perry Solomon, senior vice president of residential sales. “Although its only about 300 square feet, we think that it’s a perfect location to reach the kind of buyer that we would hope to get momentum with at that market.” Woodard, which is celebrating its 160th year in business in 2026, plans to mark the expansion with an event, although details are still being finalized. “We absolutely plan to have a party to kick it off,” Solomon said. “We are broadening the scope of our product range, so we feel a broader reach to a new market is a great opportunity to complement that.” Founded in 1866 in Owosso, Mich., Woodard manufactures and imports outdoor furniture in wrought iron, aluminum and all-weather wicker. The Coppell, Texas-based company continues to operate a manufacturing facility in Owosso while also sourcing products from China and Mexico. Its portfolio includes the Woodard, Woodard Landgrave and Woodard Lyon Shaw brands. Located at 313 S. Centennial St., 313 Space occupies a restored 155,000-square-foot mill dating to the early 20th century. The venue brings together approximately 60 design-focused brands and exhibitors across indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, antiques and other home furnishings categories. It is about a five-minute walk from the International Home Furnishings Center and includes gardens and other outdoor spaces.

Sarreid reimagines High Point showroom around ‘modern heirlooms’ By Spencer Musick Senior Editor
AT THE MARKET — Sarreid is unveiling a redesigned High Point showroom during this week’s High Point Market, introducing a more residential presentation to reflect the company’s “modern heirlooms for the collected home” positioning. The showroom, located in the C&D Building, space 3-D, is being reconfigured as Sarreid refines its assortment. Sarreid will arrange much of the showroom as a series of room-like vignettes. The settings will evoke foyers, living rooms, dining rooms and other residen-
tial spaces, showing how pieces can work together in layered interiors that appear to have evolved over time. The showroom entrance also is being repositioned to provide a more open view for visitors arriving from the escalator. One side of the showroom will offer a clearly defined path, while the other will encourage buyers and designers to explore. “I want designers and buyers to walk in and feel that the presentation matches the quality and point of view of the product,” said Mickey Sharpe, vice president of design and creative. “The goal is ... to create thoughtful settings where special pieces
can emerge, relationships between products become clear, and the idea of modern heirlooms for the collected home becomes something visitors actually experience.” The presentation will highlight products that represent the modern-heirloom concept through materials, finishes, functions and construction, drawing on Sarreid’s history of offering unusual furnishings that appear collected or discovered rather parts of coordinated groups. In addition to the residential vignettes, the renovated showroom will include a hospitality area with a gathering bar, a leather gallery and a new sam-
ple library designed to serve as a working resource for buyers and designers. Sarreid will again incorporate products from several complementary suppliers to complete the settings. Partners include Louise Gaskill Co. for lighting; Meem and Bostan Carpet for rugs; Trowbridge Gallery for artwork; Emma Hayes for wallcoverings; 29 Park and Lacefield Designs for textiles; and Barrett Bergmann Home for custom fragrances. President and CEO Brad Cates said the project is intended to connect Sarreid’s nearly 60-year history with the needs of today’s design and retail cus-
tomers. The redesign also responds to feedback from buyers who wanted the company’s High Point presentation to more fully reflect Sarreid’s reputation for distinctive, character-rich furnishings. By placing products in residential context, Sarreid aims to demonstrate how individual pieces can work across a broader range of projects, aesthetics and lifestyles. The new showroom presentation debuts this week. Sarreid, based in Wilson, N.C., manufactures case goods, leather seating and accent furniture and is particularly known for its Jupe dining tables.

at our Saturday Keynote event in October,” said Covington. Survey participants included NKBA members, Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) attendees and design professionals from HPMA’s database. With research concluding earlier this spring, the study’s findings will be revealed for the first time during the fall Market event. The Saturday Keynote is presented by HPMA in partnership with NKBA.
This showroom represents the most complete physical expression of BDI we have ever created.
The showroom reflects BDI’s continued growth beyond the media and office furniture categories for which the company has traditionally been known. Expanded presentations will highlight bedroom, dining, storage and occasional furniture
alongside its established categories. BDI said the space will also give it flexibility to accommodate future product introductions and educational events. The company plans to announce its fall market product launches separately. Lighting, room settings, product displays and circulation patterns were designed to help visitors understand how the furniture functions within a complete home. The showroom’s features include natural light, warm oak details, polished concrete floors and dedicated presentation areas. Meeting and hospitality spaces will also be available throughout market. The layout is intended to encourage visitors
to explore the collections and examine the design and functional details incorporated into BDI products. “Our retail partners were at the center of our thinking throughout the design process,” said Dave Adams, vice president of marketing at BDI. “We wanted to create an inspiring expression of the BDI brand, but also a practical resource that demonstrates how thoughtful merchandising and product presentation can create a stronger customer
experience.” Adams said BDI wants retailers to leave the showroom with merchandising and presentation ideas they can adapt for use in their own stores. BDI marked the showroom opening with a Market Preview Day event held on Oct. 16. Founded in 1984, BDI designs modern furniture incorporating engineered functionality, premium materials and contemporary styling for living, working and relaxation.
curate the collections, and maybe add a touch more contemporary because we don’t have a lot of modern solid wood. We’re going to add some of that.” The wood itself will remain the differentiator. Kincaid primarily uses recognizable U.S. lumber — including cherry, maple, oak, pine and alder — that is shipped to its manufacturing partners in Vietnam. Annas said the products are designed in North Carolina and built to Kincaid’s specifications and
quality standards. “Our quality has actually gone up to a degree because they can put more labor into it — more hands on it and better finishing techniques,” Annas said. “There aren’t many solid wood factories in Vietnam, or back in China when it was coming out of China, because it’s hard.” That specialized knowledge also limits how easily production can be moved in response to tariffs. Keeping long pieces of
wood straight through gluing, conditioning and transportation requires experienced factories, Townsend said. “Are we going to chase the lowest tariff or something like that?” he said. “It’s not that easy.” Kincaid’s construction story will continue to include solid wood tops, end panels, large panels and drawer components, along with modern upgrades such as self-closing, soft-close drawer guides. Annas
summarized the proposition in two words: “Honest value.” For Schubert, the opportunity is to translate that traditional construction story into furniture that feels distinctive in a contemporary market. “We have a huge toolbox,” he said. “We take the world’s most honest material, which is solid wood, and stretch it to its absolute artistic limit.” The Banner House brands are showing in 220 Elm, 1st floor.

Honored products will also be photographed and featured in postmarket marketing, educational programs and industry communications. “As health and wellbeing continue to become the defining trends in residential design, the furniture industry has an extraordinary opportunity to lead,” Peterson said. “Manufacturers have been practicing many of these principles intuitively for decades. Now science is validating their work, and it’s time to recognize that leadership.” The Science Scouts Program is expected to become a recurring feature of future High Point
Markets, creating an ongoing platform for recognizing innovation at the intersection of design, science, and human health. Science in Design to launch Science Scouts Program at October market By Cindy W. Hodnett Executive Editor
AT THE MARKET — Science in Design, an educational and marketing platform focused on the application of neuroscience, biophilia and evidence-based design principles, is unveiling a new initiative designed to recognize manufacturers whose products contribute to healthier, more restorative living environments at this week’s High Point Market. The Science Scouts Program is deploying a team of 12 Science in Design-certified professionals throughout the Market to identify furnishings, lighting, accesso-
ries, textiles and other products that exemplify the principles of neuroaesthetics and biophilic design. The two rapidly growing disciplines explore how thoughtfully designed environments positively influence human health and well-being. Health and wellness is at the core of the new Science Scouts Program, highlighting exhibitors whose products reflect these evidence-based design principles. “For years, manufacturers have been creating products that naturally help people feel calmer, more comfortable, and more connected to their surroundings,” said Mike Peterson, founder of Science in Design.
“Unfortunately, they haven’t been recognized for the health benefits their designs provide. Our goal is to shine a spotlight on these companies and help the industry understand that great design isn’t just beautiful; it can measurably improve the way people feel.” Prior to market, the Science Scouts, using criteria established by Terrapin Brightgreen, a leader in neuroaesthetics and biophilia, established a standardized evaluation framework based on scientific research. During market, products meeting the criteria will receive an official Science in Design Approved designation displayed
