BREAKTHROUGH T1D PROMISE BALL MARIPOSA: SPREAD YOUR WINGS
by Grace Hare
Houston Gala Raises Over $2.5 Million in the Fight Against Type 1 Diabetes
At the 2025 Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, Promise Ball, hope soared high on butterfly wings. In a dazzling display of community, compassion, and purpose, over 650 supporters gathered at Hilton Americas–Houston, raising more than $2.5 million to accelerate treatments and a cure for Type 1 diabetes (T1D). With this year’s theme, “Mariposa: Spread Your Wings,” the event symbolized resilience, transformation, and the power of collective small actions.
A Vision in Full Bloom
The ballroom was transformed into a breathtaking spring garden, bursting with florals, and a cascade of butterflies suspended from the ceiling. The centerpieces—a swirl of colorful butterflies—served as a visual reminder of the metamorphosis of Breakthrough T1D and the mission the organization strives for: turning research into reality for millions living with the disease.
In Tribute and Celebration
Emceed by Drew Dougherty, Host of Houston Texans TV, the evening paid tribute to longtime supporter Leon Ullrich, who passed away in February at 93. Board President Travis Lauritsen and Executive Director Rick Byrd also took the stage to spotlight organizational milestones, setting the tone for a night of heartfelt storytelling. Gala Chairs Kellie and Randy Johnson, joined by their children, spoke candidly about their family’s experience with T1D. The crowd also honored honorees Erin and Chris Dyer and Erin’s parents, Ronda and Dan Feeney. Patricia Wright was presented with the Meredith and Fielding Cocke Visionary Award by her daughters, adding a personal and emotional highlight to the night.

Bidding, Beats, and Big Wins
Auctioneer Johnny “Bravo” Holloway led a high-energy live auction featuring everything from VIP sports experiences and luxury getaways to an elite bourbon collection. One of the night’s top moments came during the “Fund A Cure” segment, where Victoria and Chris Wright shared their story, inspiring guests to raise $1.7 million in research funds in a matter of minutes. Another crowd favorite was a jewelry sweepstakes featuring a stunning 3.82 carat sapphire and 156 round brilliant diamond ring valued at $9,500, donated by Nacol and Company.
The Party Doesn’t Stop with the final Paddle Raise
After the final auction paddle fell, the celebration continued with a high-octane performance from Undercover Band, packing the dance floor with hits from every era. Guests also tried their luck at blackjack, roulette, and poker during the Casino After Party hosted by Liskow, with late-night bites from Frenchy’s and a Sweet Treats Table sealing the night on a sweet note.
A Movement That’s Personal
Breakthrough T1D board members and supporters—including local business leaders, families, and advocates—stood united in their goal: accelerating the path to a cure. With support from presenting sponsor Hagans and a long list of Vision and Dream Sponsors, the event reminded Houstonians that progress is powered by people willing to stand up and give.

LUNAR NEW YEAR
If you stepped into ABC13 host Miya Shay’s party while she was celebrating the Lunar New Year, you might come as they opened the mouth of a fiery dragon held in their hands, exploding brightly colored pieces of gold confetti in the air and showering the lively party guests as they celebrated.
The Lunar New Year, which was celebrated at the end of January, welcomed 2025 as the Year of the Snake- a year forecasting a season bringing wisdom, transformation, and introspection. Celebrated across Asia with red lanterns, fireworks and dances performed by costumed lions and dragons, Shay hosted a night full of traditions and glamour right here in Houston. The Horizon on Sunset was transformed into a sparkling, magical scene. The trees,
arching over the garden, were wrapped in festive white lights. The ground was scattered with confetti, and children played and ran through the patio as the night went on.
The pinnacle of the evening was the performance by the dragon dancers. Set on a stage in the middle of the yard, the two, tall white dragon costumes were ornately decorated with red and black details, and the actors in costume put on a fantastically entertaining show for the surrounding audience.
The party featured many prominent guests, including many of the friends and family members of the hostess. Photographed throughout the evening, those in attendance wore the bright, brilliant red that symbolized the good fortune of the New Year.

by Grace Hare
Houston’s Heroes Award Luncheon was held in the Royal Sonesta Hotel, and was a heartwarming, delightful afternoon spent listening to the welcoming words of guest speakers- including the Young Professionals Board, the CEO of Crime Stoppers Rania Mankarious, and Major John Whitmire. The event’s proceeds benefitted the Crime Stopper’s year-round crime prevention and public safety programming. Throughout the afternoon, guests were reminded of the important work of advocacy, education and problem-solving to create
a safer city for all. This annual event brings together the city to make a difference in the lives of Houstonians and celebrate a tradition- acknowledging the work and service of the many civilians and service members that make the city a safer place.
“This year’s honorees represent what is best about our city and state,” Mankarious said in a press release, “Whether it’s a brave K9, a visionary leader, or an advocate who’s been quietly moving mountains, each of them reminds us that real heroes walk among us.”
This event supporting the nearly forty five years of Crime Stoppers, would not have been possible without the generous sponsorships by many different organizations. The support that was received from the luncheon, will support the organization as they move forward with their next campaign, the Million for Million effort that is committed to reaching one million students and families with vital safety resourcesempowering communities to prevent danger before it is too late.

Meet

Hannah Payne isn’t just a bride—she’s a force. With a brain built for public health, a heart full of love, and a billboard lit up with her smile, she’s this season’s Bride of the Houston Bridal Extravaganza. And behind that smile? A love story that feels straight out of a rom-com, but with Texas charm and a whole lot of heart.
It all started at Texas A&M, during the infamous Midnight Yell. Lights off. A kiss. And just like that, Hannah and James were something. From chemistry tutoring sessions to late-night study marathons, their story started with tweets and textbooks and turned into a bond that’s been growing strong since 2019.
Fast forward five years, and their engagement felt like it was written in the stars—or at least staged by the best kind of romancer. In the peaceful beauty of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, James was unusually quiet, and Hannah knew something was up. They skipped dinner and took a detour to their favorite lake. The sun was setting, the air was golden, and suddenly there it was: a picnic straight out of a Pinterest board. Fresh flowers, stunning views, and James on one knee with a ring in hand. Simple. Heartfelt. Perfect.
She said yes, of course.
And now, with a wedding planned for Spring 2026 (somewhere between Texas charm and pure romance), the two are balancing love, careers, and their adorable pet squad. Two dogs—Sully, the blue-hearted button-talker, and Duncan, the surprisingly large border collie—plus a cat literally named Cat (who found them via “the cat distribution system”) fill their lives with chaos and cuddles.
Their current mission? Finding the perfect house with a yard big enough for Sully’s social adventures, Duncan’s farm sprints, and maybe— just maybe—a future koi pond to replace Hannah’s old 75-gallon fish tank.
Professionally, Hannah is just as impressive. She’s got her bachelor’s and master’s in public health (graduated with both by 24), and currently works as an Integrated Management System Specialist at a chemical plant. She’s ambitious, driven, and not shy about pushing herself to new heights. “I want to challenge
myself to learn more,” she says. From a childhood dream of becoming a doctor to leading research labs and earning a coveted NIOSH-funded graduate spot, Hannah’s educational path is one of curiosity, hard work, and determination.
And yes, her boss is officiating the wedding.
As for wedding prep, she’s already been living the dream—
trying on Belle and Pocahontas gowns only at Ventura’s Bridal Disney collection—and planning a celebration that reflects the couple’s love for the outdoors, simplicity, and authenticity. Think dreamy, think heartfelt, and think deeply personal.
Hannah’s story is more than just a proposal and a pretty picture—it’s about finding joy in small moments, committing
to growth (personally and professionally), and loving fiercely, whether it’s her fiancé, her fur babies, or a giant bowl of crawfish at Crawfish Hideaway in Mont Belvieu.
So when you see her up on that billboard, just know: that bride’s not just smiling for the camera. She’s smiling for the life she’s built and the beautiful journey still ahead.

JUSTICE ON WHEELS
HOUSTON’S NEW FORENSIC VANS BRING JUSTICE TO DOMESTIC ABUSE SURVIVORS
by Diego Correa
Houston is taking a groundbreaking step in the fight against domestic violence with the introduction of mobile forensic vans, an initiative spearheaded by Carvana Cloud, Lieutenant Julie Pleasant and their team at The Empowered Survivor. These vans, staffed by forensic nurses and law enforcement, bring critical medical and investigative services directly to survivors, ensuring swift and thorough evidence collection that can support prosecutions even if victims are unable to testify in court.
A Holistic Approach to Justice
Carvana Cloud, a former division chief in the district attorney’s office, has dedicated years to addressing domestic abuse cases. From 2016 to 2019, nearly 4,000 cases came through her office, with nearly half dismissed due to insufficient evidence. Recognizing strangulation as a key predictor of homicide, she questioned, “If strangulation is a predictor of homicide, why aren’t we doing anything about these numbers?” This led to an initiative focused on training officers to recognize and investigate strangulation more effectively.
Forensic nurses have historically been utilized in cases of sexual assault, but now they are playing a crucial role in domestic violence cases. The forensic exam, less intrusive than a traditional rape kit, allows nurses to assess injuries, document trauma, and provide expert testimony. This ensures that even if a survivor does not appear in court, the evidence can still hold up under the hearsay rule.
Meeting Survivors Where They Are
Before the launch of these forensic vans, nurses conducted exams in survivors’ homes, which was far from ideal. Now, with a fully equipped mobile unit, survivors can receive necessary medical care and evidence collection in a safe, neutral space. The van provides a headto-toe examination, including a detailed chart of injuries, blunt force trauma assessments, and a thorough danger assessment for law enforcement.
These mobile units not only serve as a means of justice but also as a beacon of hope. As Cloud puts it, “It was God’s vision that he gave to me that you need to meet these people where they are and bring an army—an army that they can trust.” Having grown up in Acres Homes during the height of the drug crisis in the ’80s and ’90s, Cloud understands firsthand the distrust many communities have toward law enforcement. This initiative aims to bridge that gap by providing trauma-informed care and advocacy directly at the scene.
Honoring the Victims
Each forensic van is named in honor of a homicide victim lost to
domestic violence. The first van, Ashanti, was named after a woman who lost her life in 2018. The name represents strength, bravery, and leadership, signifying the mission behind this initiative: to prevent future homicides and provide justice for those who have suffered abuse.
A Collaborative Effort
The forensic vans are part of a broader homicide prevention model, responding to high-risk cases, including strangulation, continuous family violence, and aggravated assault. The initiative involves collaboration between law enforcement, forensic nurses, and advocacy groups, ensuring that no one agency works alone in the fight against domestic violence.
Organizations like The Empowered Survivor, Houston Area Women’s Center, and HPD work together to provide survivors with support like housing, childcare, and transportation, recognizing that escaping abuse requires more than just immediate intervention—it requires long-term support.
Seeking Justice and Safety
Domestic violence cases are among the most dangerous for law enforcement to respond to,
with several officers having lost their lives on these calls. As Cloud emphasizes, “Safety is our number one priority, not only for the victims but for the members of our team.” Officers are accompanied by security personnel to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
By combining advocacy, forensic science, and law enforcement, Houston’s forensic vans are changing the landscape of domestic violence intervention. “When you’re seeking justice, when you have the evidence, you move forward,” Cloud states. This initiative is not just about prosecuting offenders—it’s about giving survivors the support and validation they deserve.
Houston’s forensic vans officially launched on April 10th, marking a new era in the city’s fight against domestic violence.

ESCAPE TO
by Laurette Veres
RANCHO LA PUERTA
As the grey van pulls up to the courtesy vehicle island at the San Diego airport, anticipation rises. It’s just an hour southwest through the lush green mountains, past California’s vineyards and wineries. The fertile ground gives way to the border town of Tecate, Mexico. As soon as you clear customs, it’s seven minutes to Rancho La Puerta.
The welcoming iron gates have been saying hola to wellness seekers since 1940. Vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow form a stained-glass flame on the lobby doors. As a nod to the name, you’ll see many unique doors on property. Continuing
inside, the lobby is inviting with bright red and yellow pillows on a semi-circular couch hugging the open space, art that pops, and an overall traditional Mexican village aesthetic.
We arrive just in time for lunch. The dining hall is festive with Mexican Papel Picado (colored paper) hanging from the ceiling. The meals here are nonprocessed, super fresh, and vegetarian. Although the serving style is buffet, you don’t feel the overwhelm of most buffets. Fresh salad, gazpacho, tuna, cottage cheese, fresh baked breads and fruit are enough to satisfy the appetite.
The rooms here are oversized with plenty of space for sharing. My friend and I occupied a double and had a seating area between the two beds. White linens compliment the carved brown bedframe, chair and table. Bright artwork adorns the walls. Hand painted tile in the bathroom and wet bar complete the hacienda feeling.
A main attraction of this resort is the plethora of fitness and exercise classes offered. We are in time to hop in the Cardio Drum class. Not knowing what this would be, it turns out to be a group class where each participant has drumsticks and a large trashcan with a lid. Follow the leader as he shows patterns involving banging on your drum as well as your neighbors and remembering the sequence of steps. He tells us this class was developed over 20 years ago to help children with cognitive and developmental issues such as dyslexia. The class is now offered for all ages because as we learn new patterns, new neural pathways are created improving mental well-being.
We quickly found our next class a 30-minute intensive core class.
Activities here are boundless and you can literally attend a class almost every hour. Since Pickleball is all the craze, and I’ve never given it a try, my friend and I attended a beginner’s clinic. We were pleasantly surprised to find the sport very approachable. There are six courts here and clinics and open play are both available options. We headed straight to aqua board which takes place in one of the four pools. Here we balanced onto
floating mats most similar to standup paddle boards; joined together via bungee rope. It looks like an obstacle course creating an ameba type effect. If one person falls off their board, a ripple effect is created; the entire class feels it and must adjust.
Aside from the full schedule of fitness and wellness classes, there are two spas on property. The Watsu pool is located at the women’s spa. If you haven’t heard of Watsu, it is a mixture of floating and massage with a heavy emphasis on breathing all taking place in a private pool. For most of the treatment, you have a swimmer’s nose clip forcing you to breathe in and out only with your mouth. This increases the amount of oxygen entering your system. Instructor Ben ebbs and flows your body as you stretch creating a surreal massage experience.
At the Villas spa, I had a Cranial Sacrum healing treatment. This is a breathing and energy clearing exercise. I could feel the heat coming from the therapist’s hands, even though she never actually touched my temples. The focus is on restorative breath, grounding and clearing.

When it comes to thrifting, Houston truly stands out as one of the best places to explore. Not only can you score great deals and save money, but you’re also making an environmentally conscious choice by giving pre-loved items a second life. While thrifting is easy on your wallet and good for the planet, it might not be so gentle on your schedule. Step into any of the shops listed below, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending hours browsing through endless racks of hidden treasures and vintage gems.
Fallen Angel
This Montrose thrift store is a go-to for fashion lovers who want a mix of designer and everyday pieces. The designer room features secondhand clothing, sunglasses, watches, and some standout shoes, with prices a bit higher than your average thrift store but well worth it for the quality. The rest of the space is filled with stylish, non-designer finds that are just as fun and unique, perfect for anyone looking to refresh their wardrobe without spending a fortune. The staff are always friendly, helpful, and incredibly well-dressed, making the entire shopping experience feel inspiring. Once tucked away in Rice Village, the store is now right in the middle of Houston’s thrifting scene and is quickly becoming a local favorite.
Texas Thrift
Texas Thrift offers an impressive selection of clothing that’s perfect for anyone who loves to dig through racks and discover hidden treasures. It’s a great place to spend some time browsing because you never know what you might find. I’ve left empty-handed before, but I’ve also walked out with a pair of adorable Chanel heels, yes, real ones. The prices are super affordable, and with less than $100, you could build yourself a whole new wardrobe.
Preloved
PreLoved is a consignment store with a unique twist. Instead of traditional consignment, sellers can rent their own booth, making it a great option if you have a closet full of cute clothes to part with. Tucked away on North Braeswood, this spot is full of fun finds at a range of prices. If you have even just half an hour to browse, there’s a good chance you’ll walk out with something you love.
HOTEL EMMA
INDUSTRIAL ROMANCE MEETS SAN ANTONIO’S STORIED PAST
by Laurette Veres
Tucked along the banks of the San Antonio River, Hotel Emma is not merely a place to stay—it’s a journey through time, taste, and Texas-sized character. With a curated library, soaring ceilings, and an ever-evolving food scene, this 5-diamond destination is part luxury hotel, part living museum, and wholly unforgettable.
A Historic Transformation
Once the Pearl Brewery— originally founded in 1883—Hotel Emma is named after its most legendary matriarch, Emma Koehler. After her husband’s untimely death in 1914 (under mysterious circumstances), Emma took the reins, running the brewery with a boldness that defied the era. During Prohibition, she kept the doors open by pivoting to dry goods, medical beer, and even ice. She was a major employer of women during the time and remained at the helm until 1942.
That legacy of innovation and strength is infused in every corner of the hotel that now bears her name.
From Brew to Beauty
The architecture is a striking blend of urban industrial grit and romantic Hacienda flair. Original German signage still clings to aged brick walls. Massive fermentation tanks—once filled with up to 26,000 gallons of beer—now shimmer in bright orange as sculptural showpieces. The “Elephant Cellar,” once used to chill beer with early refrigeration tech, is now a sought after special event venue.
Walk the courtyard, once the Brewmeisters’ Alley, and you’ll find flags embedded in tile that pay homage to the brewmaster’s homeland. Behind the hotel, the San Antonio River snakes quietly, a soft backdrop to the drama of the building’s design.
Culinary Cathedral
Food is no afterthought at Hotel Emma—it’s a centerpiece. The Sternewirth Bar & Club Room, once the fermentation hall, now serves up cocktails with names like “Three Emmas: The Good, The Bad, and The Deadly,” a nod to the hotel’s juicy origin stories.
In the display kitchen, chefs from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA)—which has made this its third U.S. location—craft unforgettable meals. Hotel Emma has become an incubator for culinary talent; many vendors who began in the hotel’s food hall have gone on to launch brick-andmortar restaurants across San Antonio. One standout is Cured, helmed by Chef Steve McHugh, where charcuterie and creativity meet. This restaurant is located in the original office and still utilizes the building’s safe.
Oddities, Elegance & Emma Herself
In the lobby, a mysterious red refrigeration machine from 1936 stands sentinel—another nod to Hotel Emma’s inventive lineage. A curio case near the entrance offers a glimpse of artifacts, while upstairs, large spaces echo with the hush of Texas architects and descendants who returned to bring the building back to life.
And the stories? They’re the stuff of legend. Emma Koehler once took the stand in a highprofile 1918 case—where she reportedly married the jury foreman. One local German history teacher, Michael Tippem, calls the saga “a cocktail of beer, lust, and murder.” Fitting, then, that you can drink to all three at the hotel bar.
Final Pour
Hotel Emma is more than a place to sleep—it’s a living homage to San Antonio’s industrious soul, a place where urban grit meets opulent grace. With 26 restaurants and counting in the surrounding Pearl District and a cultural calendar brimming with events like Fiesta de Fernando, it’s no wonder Hotel Emma is considered one of the finest stays in Texas—if not the country.
Getting There: Hotel Emma is located in San Antonio’s Pearl District. Book well in advance for event weekends and wedding season.
Pro Tip: Ask the concierge for the time-lapse video from 2020—it’s a mesmerizing look at the brewery’s transformation.

GUATEMALA: WHERE CULTURE MEETS LUXURY IN CENTRAL AMERICA
by Sonia Soto
There are beautiful destinations—and then there are places that live and breathe culture, history, and soul. Antigua, Guatemala, is firmly in the latter category. Nestled among towering volcanoes and cobblestone streets, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a vibrant tapestry of colonial charm, indigenous heritage, and elevated hospitality. Whether you’re a culture lover, foodie, art enthusiast, or simply looking for a travel experience that feels both luxurious and meaningful, Guatemala is a destination that delivers.
Forget crowded resort towns—Antigua offers something deeper. Here, Spanish colonial architecture meets Mayan tradition. Local markets overflow with handwoven textiles, street vendors flip fresh tortillas with a smile, and centuries-
old cathedrals serve as living monuments to the country’s rich and complex past. It’s the kind of place where every corner has a story and every encounter feels personal.
Stay in Style: Villa Bokéh
At the heart of Antigua’s luxury scene is Villa Bokéh, a 15-room boutique hotel tucked just outside the city’s historic center. The property is a design lover’s dream, where contemporary minimalism is softened by traditional Guatemalan craftsmanship—think hand-thrown pottery, antique furnishings, woven textiles, and curated local art. The views? Absolutely show-stopping, with Agua Volcano standing like a silent guardian over it all.
One of only two Relais & Châteaux properties in
Guatemala, Villa Bokéh was named one of the World’s 50 Best Hotels in 2025 and continues to set the bar for hospitality in Central America. The service is intuitive, the setting serene, and the experience deeply rooted in the culture and spirit of the country.
Antigua: A Living Museum
Once the capital of Spanish Central America, Antigua is a city rich in stories. Its colonial architecture has been beautifully preserved—baroque churches, leafy plazas, and former monasteries now house museums and galleries. The streets pulse with local life: women in embroidered huipiles walk alongside schoolchildren, while artisans sell everything from hand-carved jade jewelry to colorful ceramics.
This is a destination that invites exploration. Take a walking tour through the city’s bustling markets, learn about the art of chocolate-making, or sip award-winning Guatemalan coffee on a rooftop terrace at sunset. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of nearby Fuego Volcano releasing a puff of smoke in the distance.
The Magic of Lake Atitlán
No trip to Guatemala is complete without visiting Lake Atitlán, a surreal volcanic lake ringed by 12 villages, each with its own unique character and artistic identity. The lake is considered sacred by the Maya, and it’s easy to understand why: the landscape is jaw-dropping, the energy peaceful, and the connection to the land palpable.
Perched above the lake is Casa Palopó, Villa Bokéh’s sister property and Guatemala’s first Relais & Châteaux hotel. Every corner of this hilltop retreat celebrates Guatemalan artistry— from hand-painted murals and folk art to panoramic views that change with the light. The 15-room hotel offers an intimate stay with all the comforts of high-end travel and the heart of a family-run boutique.
Cultural Experiences that Connect
What sets Guatemala apart is how naturally it invites travelers to experience its culture, not just observe it. You might start your day with a cleansing ceremony led by a Mayan shaman, using copal incense and flower petals to invite balance and connection. In the afternoon, wander through a local weaving cooperative to learn the stories behind traditional ikat techniques passed down through generations.
Come evening, dine at Kinnik, Casa Palopó’s signature lakeside restaurant, where contemporary Guatemalan cuisine takes center stage. Expect fresh lake fish, tamal-inspired small plates, and inventive dishes using native herbs and heirloom corn—all paired with a perfectly chilled glass of local wine.
Effortless Travel, Deep Discovery
For travelers coming from the U.S., especially Houston, Guatemala is refreshingly close—less than three hours by direct flight to Guatemala City. From there, Antigua is just a 90-minute drive, and Lake Atitlán is an additional three hours by car or a quick helicopter ride for those looking to elevate the experience.
What awaits is more than a scenic vacation. It’s a journey into a place where elegance meets authenticity, and where every moment is layered with history, flavor, and connection.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, taking a soul-nourishing solo trip, or exploring with friends or family, Guatemala offers an experience that’s both culturally rich and luxuriously restorative. In a world of cookie-cutter destinations, this is one that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
