PleasekeepinmindthateverycoursetaughtatBCSpreparesstudentswellforcollege.Withregardtoourcore curriculum,thecollegepreparatory(e.ggradelevel)coursesareexcellent,taughtbydedicatedteachers,andinvolve rigorouslearningandassessment.Ouracceleratedcourses(Honors,DE,AP)moveatafasterpaceandteachersexpect studentstograspconceptsquicklyandapplyskillsandknowledgetosolvecomplexproblems.Bothtypesofcoursesserve studentswell.Thereisnotabestpathhereforallstudents-thebestpathistherightoneforthelearner,onethatis challengingbutnotoverwhelming.Acceleratedcoursesarenotwhateverylearnerneeds,andBCSiscommittedto servingandpreparingeverystudentwithagreatfoundationforwherevertheLordcallsthemafterHighSchool.

AcceleratedCourse(Honors/DE/AP)PlacementCriteria

EligibilityforHighSchoolAcceleratedCourses(Honors/AP)willbebasedontothefollowingfirstsemestergrade criteria(pleaseseethenextpageforDualEnrollmentCriteria):

Ifastudentdidnotmeetthegraderequirement,butisinterestedinanacceleratedcourse,eligibilitywillbebasedon Administrativereviewof:

● Overallcoreacademicperformance

● StandardizedTestandStarAssessmentData

DualEnrollmentCriteriaforHighSchool

EligibilityforDualEnrollmentclasses(HonorsPrecalculusDE,HonorsEnglish12DE, HonorsBiologyDE,Honors Spanish2DE,HonorsU.S.History2DE)willbebasedonJeffersonState’scriteria.StudentsmaychoosetotakeDE classesiftheymeetJeffState’srequirementslistedbelow:

● Onlystudentsinthe10th,11th,or12thgradeareeligibleforDualEnrollment.

● Studentsmusthavea2.5unweightedGPAona4.0scale.

● Studentsmusthaveapprovaloftheirhighschoolcounselor.

● ACTScoresorAccuplacerScoresonfileat JeffersonStatethatmeetorexceedthefollowing:

○ English:18SubscoreontheEnglishportionoftheACTora5orhigherontheEnglishAccuplacer

○ Precalculus:

■ 24SubscoreontheMathportionoftheACTora267ontheMathAccuplacer

■ ORa20ontheMathportionoftheACTANDaCinAlgebra2

● StudentsmustbewillingandabletopayJeffersonStatetuitionfortheclasstoJeffersonStatethroughits paymentportal TuitionissetbyJeffersonStateeachyearbutaverages$550persemestertoearnthecollege credit

StudentsarerequiredtostayinanyHonors,DualEnrollment,orAPcoursefortheentireyearunlessthefirst semesteraverageisbelow70andthereisarecommendationforchangebytheteacherandtheDepartment Chair.

Studentswillbenotifiediftheyqualifyforanyacceleratedcourses(Honors/DE/AP)duringtheirannualcourseselection meetingwiththeirgradelevelcounselor.Studentswillneedtocontinueanacceptablelevelofperformanceforthe remainderoftheacademicyeartomaintainplacementinanacceleratedcourse.Theschoolreservestherighttochangea student’splacementifastudent’sacademicperformancewarrantssuchaction.

OutsideCollegeCoursePolicy

Sophomores,juniors,andseniorshavemultipleopportunitiestoearncollegecredithoursorcollegecreditsatisfactionfor classestakenthroughtheBCSHonorsDualEnrollmentclassesand/orAPclassesduringtheregularacademicschool year.BecausebothHonorsDEandAPclassesareconsideredacceleratedcourses,studentswillqualifyforthosecourses throughtheacceleratedcourseplacementcriteriaandneedtounderstandtheircurrentacademicperformancemay impacttheirabilitytoregisterfortheseacceleratedcourses.Studentsmightalsoreceiveacademiccollegecreditforcertain scoresonsubjecttestsfromtheACTdependingontheircollegeofchoice.

StudentsmaywishtotakecollegecoursesduringhighschoolthroughEarlyorAcceleratedCollegeprogramsatvarious colleges.BriarwooddoesnotprovideDualEnrollmentcreditforanyclassnottakenatBriarwood.However,therequired counselorrecommendationwillbeprovidedattheconclusionoftheSpringsemesterforstudentswishingtotakethese Early/Acceleratedcollegecoursesifthestudentisnotonacademicordisciplinaryprobationduringtheacademicterm thatthecourseistaken

An“HonorsDiploma”isdistinguishedfromthe“CollegePreparatoryDiploma”bythefollowingcriteria:

● Honorsclassesingrades10-12(Math,Science,English,History)whereofferedexcludingWorldLanguage

● Fourfullyear(1credit)APclassesarerequired--choosefromanyofthefollowing:

BCSDualEnrollmentprogramiswithJeffersonStateCommunityCollege(JSCC). DualEnrollmentis aprogramthatallowsqualifiedhighschoolstudentstoenrollincollegelevelcoursesandreceivebothhigh schoolandcollegecrediteachsemester

3. WhatqualificationsmuststudentshavetoenrollinaDualEnrollmentcourse?

ThequalificationsforstudentstoenrollinDualEnrollmentcoursesvarybysubjectandaresetbyJSCC.Please checkwithyourgradelevelcounselorforthecurrentJSCCrequirements.

SomesubjectsrequirethestudenttohaveanACTscoretobeeligibleforDualEnrollment.Studentswithoutan ACTscoremaytestforplacementeligibilitythroughJSCC. StudentsmayregisterfortheDEcourseduring springregistrationwithouttestdata,andplacementcanbeamendedifnecessaryoncetheJSCCplacementtest orACTtestresultsarereceived.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoscheduletestingwithJSCC.All placementtestingisconductedontheJSCCShelbycampus.

4. WhataboutDualEnrollment(DE)vs.AdvancedPlacement(AP)?

DualEnrollment(DE)providestheopportunityforBriarwoodstudentstoearncollegecreditseachsemester whileinHighSchool ThecontentandteachingmethodologyofDEdesignatedcourseswillbeatacollege introductorylevel JSCCgradesareindicatedbylettergradeonly(A,B,C,D,F)withoutplusesorminuses,or numericalgrades CreditatthecollegelevelwillbeawardedbyJSCCifthestudentearnsaminimumgradeofC orbetter

AdvancedPlacement(AP)coursesaredesignatedcourseswhosecontentisatthecollegiatelevel Upon completionofthecourse,studentswillhavetheopportunitytotakeanAPExamandearncollegecreditbased ontheresultoftheirAPExamscore(creditisgenerallyawardedtostudentsscoringa3orhigherontheAP Exam) ToenrollinAPcourses,studentsmustmeettheguidelinesoutlinedinBriarwood’sAcceleratedCourse PlacementCriteria.

DEHonorsPre-CalculusandAPCalculus:

Generally,BriarwoodstudentsenrolledinHonorsPre-Calculus willgoontotakeAPCalculus(providedtheymeettheAPrequirements).Atsomecollegesanduniversities,a studentwhoachievesascoreof3orhigherontheAPCalculusExamwillautomaticallyreceivecollegecreditfor PrecalculusandCalculus(generally6credithours).IfastudenttakestheHonorsPre-CalculusDEcourseand goesontotaketheAPCalculuscourse,theDEenrollmentMTH112and MTH113coursesmaystillcountas electivecollegecoursecredit.Itisstronglyrecommendedparentsandstudentsfamiliarizethemselves withtheAPExamcreditpoliciesattheinstitution(s)towhichthestudentwillapply.

Yes ThereisachargeofJSCCtuitionforeachsemester PricesaresubjecttochangeaccordingtoJSCCrates andpolicies,andallfeesarepaidthroughthestudent’sJSCCOnlineAccountandarepayabletoJSCCdirectly

7. WillDEcoursestransfertomycollegeofchoice?

JSCCmakesavailablealistofapprovedDualEnrollmentcoursesthatareguaranteedtotransfertoanypublic schoolinthestateofAlabamathroughtheSTARSProgram(StatewideTransferandArticulationReporting System).ThislistisavailableontheJSCCwebsiteinthecatalogunderuniversityparallelprograms(i.e. UniversityofAlabama,AuburnUniversity,UniversityofMontevallo,etc.).Itisrecommendedstudentscheck withBriarwood’sSchoolCounselingDepartmentregardingthetransferabilityofcoursestoprivatecollegesand universities,aswellasout-of-stateinstitutions.WhileBriarwood’sSchoolCounselingOfficewillmakeevery efforttoassiststudentsandparentsinobtainingaccurateinformationregardingtransferabilitytospecific institutions,itisultimatelytheparents’andstudents’responsibilitytoverifythisinformationwith thecollegeoruniversityoftheirchoice.

8. Whatistheregistrationprocess?

StudentswhoareenrolledinDualEnrollmentcoursesofferedatBriarwoodwillreceiveemailedinstructionsin thespringofthecurrentschoolyear Theinstructionswillincludespecificstepsforonlineregistration,required documentsandpaymentthroughJSCC’swebsite ThedeadlinetomeetallJeffStaterequirementsisMay22 AlthoughthisdatedoesnotalignwithJeffState’sofficialdeadline,wemustreceivealldocumentationbyMay 22toensurethetimelycreationofthemasterscheduleandindividualstudentschedules

ScheduleChanges

Pleasenotethefollowingregardingschedulechanges:

● Itisimportantforstudentstoreviewtheirfull-yearscheduleatthebeginningoftheacademicyearwhen thereismoreflexibilityinaccommodatingchangesthatcouldaffectthesecondsemester

● Itisastrongdesirethatastudent’sfullyearacademiccoursesnotbechangedmid-yeartoanotherperiodto accommodateschedulechanges,particularlyforelectivesand/orathletics

● Studentswillremaininyear-longcourses(includingallathleticperiods)fortheentireacademicyear.

● Whencontemplatingschedulechanges,pleasebeawarethatnotallclassesaretaughteveryperiodofthedayand thenumberofsectionsislimitedbyfacultyavailability.Therefore,noteveryschedulechangecanbe accommodated.

StudentsarerequiredtostayinanyHonors,DualEnrollment,orAPcoursefortheentireyearunlessthefirst semesteraverageisbelow70andthereisarecommendationforchangebytheteacherandtheDepartment Chair.

● Failuretotaketheexamontime,withoutpriorapprovalbythePrincipal,willresultina“0”fortheexam.

Exams

Finalexaminationswillbegiveninmostcoursesatthehighschoollevelattheendofeachsemester.

● Studentsmusttakeexamswhentheyarescheduled Permissiontotakeexamsatadatelaterthanscheduledwill onlybegrantedinemergencysituations

● Ifastudentisillandisunabletoattendschool,theparentmustcalltheUpperSchoolMainOfficeimmediately.

ExamExemptions

● All9th-11thgradestudentswilltakefallandspringsemesterexams Examexemptionsforspringsemester examsareavailableonlytoseniors

● Tobeeligible,seniorsmusthaveaspringsemesteraverageof90orhighertobeexcusedfromtheirfinalspring semesterexam

● Additionally,asstatedinthestudenthandbook,seniorsmusthavenomorethantwounexcusedabsences duringthesemestertoremaineligibleforthisexemptionpolicy.

Onceastudenthassuccessfullycompletedtheenrollmentprocess,allcoursestransferredfromanaccreditedhighschool willbeacceptedatBCS. Thesecourseswillbeappliedappropriatelytotherequiredcoursesforgraduation.

HomeSchoolTransfer

AllhomeschooledstudentsinterestedinenrollmentatBCSmustcompletetheregularenrollmentprocess Transcripts willbeevaluatedandplacementwillbebasedoncoursegrades,testscores,lettersofrecommendation,andcredits receivedthroughhomeschooling

Honors/APCourses

SuccessfullycompletedHonorsandAPcourseswillbeacceptedandrecordedonthetranscriptascompleted Honors andAPgradeswillbecomputedatthesamerateasBCSstudents Qualitypointsusedindetermininggradepoint averageswillbegivenonlytosubjectsreceivingsuchqualitypointsfromBCS

EarningCourseCreditOutsideOfBCS

StudentsmaynottakecoursesatotherinstitutionsifthecourseisofferedatBCS. Anexceptiontothispolicyappliesifa studenthasfailedarequiredcourseandmustdocreditrecovery. Onlythenmayastudenttakethecourseatanapproved institutionduringthesummerforcoursecredit.

AcademicSupportServices

TheAcademicSupportProgramenablesBriarwoodChristianSchooltomeetthediverseeducationalneedsofeach studentwhileequippingthewholechildforlifefromaBiblicalperspective.TheAcademicSupportProgramatBCS isforstudentswithdocumentedevidenceoflearningdifferences.Thegoalistoprovidesupport,accountabilityand encouragementtostudents,motivatingstudentstousetheirGod-givengiftstobecomeconfident,independent,and activelifelonglearners.

Thefollowingguidelineshavebeenestablishedtodocumentastudent’seligibilityfortheAcademicSupport Program,determinetheappropriateplacementintheprogram,andassesstheneedforspecificaccommodationsin thestudent’sacademicplan:

● Thediagnosisofalearningdisabilityorthedesignationofotherspecialneedsdoesnotnecessarily establisheligibilityforAcademicSupportServicesorconsiderationsatBriarwoodChristianSchool

● Documentationofpriorservicesandconsiderationbyotherpartiesoragenciesdoesnotnecessarily establisheligibilityforAcademicSupportServicesorconsiderationsatBriarwoodChristianSchool.

DocumentationGuidelines

ThefollowingguidelinessupporttheSchool’sintentiontoprovidethebesteducationpossibleforeachstudent.

● TobeeligibletoreceiveAcademicSupportServices,astudentmusthaveappropriateandcurrent documentationindicatinganeedforspecialconsideration.Currentandappropriatedocumentationis definedasafullpsychologicalevaluationwithinthreeyearsfromthestartofAcademicSupportServices considerationfromalicensedpsychologistorpsychometrist. Theseevaluationsshouldinitiallybe presentedtoastaffmemberintheAcademicSupportServicesCenterortheDirectorofCounseling ServicesintheSchoolCounselingDepartment.

● Briarwood’sASPTeamwillreviewdocumentationtodetermineifthedisabilityhasanadverseimpacton thestudent’slearningandwillmaketheappropriaterecommendationsregardingeligibility,placement, andtheavailabilityofaccommodationsatBCS,totheprospectivestudent’sacademicprogram

DistinctionofAccommodation

BCSprovidesqualifyingstudentswithaccommodations,notmodifications. Anaccommodationdoesnotreducethe requiredmaterialtobelearnedandassessed,asamodificationwould.

Anaccommodationallowsthestudenttoperformaswellastheirpeersbyremovingbarrierstolearning.An accommodationplanensuresequalaccesstolearningthatmaybeprohibitedduetoimpairment.

ObjectiveofService:

ServiceHoursGuidelines

ThetruegoalofallChristianeducationisforthestudenttobecomelikeJesusChrist.JesusChriststatedinMark10:45, “Foreventhesonofmancamenottobeserved,buttoserve,andtogivehislifeasaransomformany.” Servicetoour LordandtoothersisanimportantfacetoftheBiblecurriculumatBCS.AllhighschoolstudentsatBCSarerequiredto fulfilltheBibleservicehourrequirementeachyeartheyareenrolled.Studentswillreporttheirservicehourselectronically usingtheMobileServeapp.TheseBibleservicehoursaremeanttobeapartoftheBCSBiblecurriculumandcannotbe usedtosatisfytheservicerequirementsforvarioushonorsocieties.
