SomesubjectsrequirethestudenttohaveanACTscoretobeeligibleforDualEnrollment.Studentswithoutan ACTscoremaytestforplacementeligibilitythroughJSCC. StudentsmayregisterfortheDEcourseduring springregistrationwithouttestdata,andplacementcanbeamendedifnecessaryoncetheJSCCplacementtest orACTtestresultsarereceived.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoscheduletestingwithJSCC.All placementtestingisconductedontheJSCCShelbycampus.
4. WhataboutDualEnrollment(DE)vs.AdvancedPlacement(AP)?
DualEnrollment(DE)providestheopportunityforBriarwoodstudentstoearncollegecreditseachsemester whileinHighSchool ThecontentandteachingmethodologyofDEdesignatedcourseswillbeatacollege introductorylevel JSCCgradesareindicatedbylettergradeonly(A,B,C,D,F)withoutplusesorminuses,or numericalgrades CreditatthecollegelevelwillbeawardedbyJSCCifthestudentearnsaminimumgradeofC orbetter
AdvancedPlacement(AP)coursesaredesignatedcourseswhosecontentisatthecollegiatelevel Upon completionofthecourse,studentswillhavetheopportunitytotakeanAPExamandearncollegecreditbased ontheresultoftheirAPExamscore(creditisgenerallyawardedtostudentsscoringa3orhigherontheAP Exam) ToenrollinAPcourses,studentsmustmeettheguidelinesoutlinedinBriarwood’sAcceleratedCourse PlacementCriteria.
Generally,BriarwoodstudentsenrolledinHonorsPre-Calculus willgoontotakeAPCalculus(providedtheymeettheAPrequirements).Atsomecollegesanduniversities,a studentwhoachievesascoreof3orhigherontheAPCalculusExamwillautomaticallyreceivecollegecreditfor PrecalculusandCalculus(generally6credithours).IfastudenttakestheHonorsPre-CalculusDEcourseand goesontotaketheAPCalculuscourse,theDEenrollmentMTH112and MTH113coursesmaystillcountas electivecollegecoursecredit.Itisstronglyrecommendedparentsandstudentsfamiliarizethemselves withtheAPExamcreditpoliciesattheinstitution(s)towhichthestudentwillapply.

JSCCmakesavailablealistofapprovedDualEnrollmentcoursesthatareguaranteedtotransfertoanypublic schoolinthestateofAlabamathroughtheSTARSProgram(StatewideTransferandArticulationReporting System).ThislistisavailableontheJSCCwebsiteinthecatalogunderuniversityparallelprograms(i.e. UniversityofAlabama,AuburnUniversity,UniversityofMontevallo,etc.).Itisrecommendedstudentscheck withBriarwood’sSchoolCounselingDepartmentregardingthetransferabilityofcoursestoprivatecollegesand universities,aswellasout-of-stateinstitutions.WhileBriarwood’sSchoolCounselingOfficewillmakeevery efforttoassiststudentsandparentsinobtainingaccurateinformationregardingtransferabilitytospecific institutions,itisultimatelytheparents’andstudents’responsibilitytoverifythisinformationwith thecollegeoruniversityoftheirchoice.

StudentswhoareenrolledinDualEnrollmentcoursesofferedatBriarwoodwillreceiveemailedinstructionsin thespringofthecurrentschoolyear Theinstructionswillincludespecificstepsforonlineregistration,required documentsandpaymentthroughJSCC’swebsite ThedeadlinetomeetallJeffStaterequirementsisMay22 AlthoughthisdatedoesnotalignwithJeffState’sofficialdeadline,wemustreceivealldocumentationbyMay 22toensurethetimelycreationofthemasterscheduleandindividualstudentschedules
Pleasenotethefollowingregardingschedulechanges:
● Itisimportantforstudentstoreviewtheirfull-yearscheduleatthebeginningoftheacademicyearwhen thereismoreflexibilityinaccommodatingchangesthatcouldaffectthesecondsemester

Onceastudenthassuccessfullycompletedtheenrollmentprocess,allcoursestransferredfromanaccreditedhighschool willbeacceptedatBCS. Thesecourseswillbeappliedappropriatelytotherequiredcoursesforgraduation.
AllhomeschooledstudentsinterestedinenrollmentatBCSmustcompletetheregularenrollmentprocess Transcripts willbeevaluatedandplacementwillbebasedoncoursegrades,testscores,lettersofrecommendation,andcredits receivedthroughhomeschooling
SuccessfullycompletedHonorsandAPcourseswillbeacceptedandrecordedonthetranscriptascompleted Honors andAPgradeswillbecomputedatthesamerateasBCSstudents Qualitypointsusedindetermininggradepoint averageswillbegivenonlytosubjectsreceivingsuchqualitypointsfromBCS
StudentsmaynottakecoursesatotherinstitutionsifthecourseisofferedatBCS. Anexceptiontothispolicyappliesifa studenthasfailedarequiredcourseandmustdocreditrecovery. Onlythenmayastudenttakethecourseatanapproved institutionduringthesummerforcoursecredit.
TheAcademicSupportProgramenablesBriarwoodChristianSchooltomeetthediverseeducationalneedsofeach studentwhileequippingthewholechildforlifefromaBiblicalperspective.TheAcademicSupportProgramatBCS isforstudentswithdocumentedevidenceoflearningdifferences.Thegoalistoprovidesupport,accountabilityand encouragementtostudents,motivatingstudentstousetheirGod-givengiftstobecomeconfident,independent,and activelifelonglearners.
Thefollowingguidelineshavebeenestablishedtodocumentastudent’seligibilityfortheAcademicSupport Program,determinetheappropriateplacementintheprogram,andassesstheneedforspecificaccommodationsin thestudent’sacademicplan:
● Thediagnosisofalearningdisabilityorthedesignationofotherspecialneedsdoesnotnecessarily establisheligibilityforAcademicSupportServicesorconsiderationsatBriarwoodChristianSchool
● Documentationofpriorservicesandconsiderationbyotherpartiesoragenciesdoesnotnecessarily establisheligibilityforAcademicSupportServicesorconsiderationsatBriarwoodChristianSchool.
ThefollowingguidelinessupporttheSchool’sintentiontoprovidethebesteducationpossibleforeachstudent.
● TobeeligibletoreceiveAcademicSupportServices,astudentmusthaveappropriateandcurrent documentationindicatinganeedforspecialconsideration.Currentandappropriatedocumentationis definedasafullpsychologicalevaluationwithinthreeyearsfromthestartofAcademicSupportServices considerationfromalicensedpsychologistorpsychometrist. Theseevaluationsshouldinitiallybe presentedtoastaffmemberintheAcademicSupportServicesCenterortheDirectorofCounseling ServicesintheSchoolCounselingDepartment.
● Briarwood’sASPTeamwillreviewdocumentationtodetermineifthedisabilityhasanadverseimpacton thestudent’slearningandwillmaketheappropriaterecommendationsregardingeligibility,placement, andtheavailabilityofaccommodationsatBCS,totheprospectivestudent’sacademicprogram
BCSprovidesqualifyingstudentswithaccommodations,notmodifications. Anaccommodationdoesnotreducethe requiredmaterialtobelearnedandassessed,asamodificationwould.
Anaccommodationallowsthestudenttoperformaswellastheirpeersbyremovingbarrierstolearning.An accommodationplanensuresequalaccesstolearningthatmaybeprohibitedduetoimpairment.

ThetruegoalofallChristianeducationisforthestudenttobecomelikeJesusChrist.JesusChriststatedinMark10:45, “Foreventhesonofmancamenottobeserved,buttoserve,andtogivehislifeasaransomformany.” Servicetoour LordandtoothersisanimportantfacetoftheBiblecurriculumatBCS.AllhighschoolstudentsatBCSarerequiredto fulfilltheBibleservicehourrequirementeachyeartheyareenrolled.Studentswillreporttheirservicehourselectronically usingtheMobileServeapp.TheseBibleservicehoursaremeanttobeapartoftheBCSBiblecurriculumandcannotbe usedtosatisfytheservicerequirementsforvarioushonorsocieties.
