Accelerated–Acceleratedcoursesaremorerigorous,containgreaterbreadthanddepthofcontent,andmoveatafaster pacethanCollegePreparatorycourses

Accelerated Course Placement Criteria

7thGrade

TheJuniorHighoffersacceleratedcourseoptionsforrising7thgradestudentsinMath(AcceleratedPre-Algebraand AcceleratedPre-AlgebraMathTeam),whileallothercoreacademiccourses(includingMath7)areofferedatthecollege preplevel.PlacementintheacceleratedMathcoursesisdeterminedaccordingtothefollowingcriteria:

● Thestudent'sperformancein6thGradeMath

● Thestudent’sscoreonaMathplacementtestgiveninSpringsemesterof6thgrade

● Standardizedtestingscores

● StarAssessmentdata

Toallowtimelycourseselectiondecisions,pleasenotethedeadline forsubmittingthisformisnolaterthanFriday,February6,at3:00pm.Thisneedstobeaharddeadlineaswewillnot beabletoreviewlatesubmissions.Theadministrationwillreviewthestudent’sacademicperformance,teacher recommendationandtestingdata Administrationmayrequestameetingwiththestudentandparentsaspartofthe decisionprocesstodetermineeligibility AdministrationwillrespondtoyourrequestbyFebruary27th

StudentsarerequiredtostayinanyAcceleratedcoursefortheentireyearunlessthefirstsemesteraverageis below70andthereisarecommendationforchangebytheteacherandtheJHPrincipal.

Notification of Course Placement

Rising7thGrade

Rising7thgradestudentswillreceivealistofcoursesfromtheUpperSchoolRegistrarduringthelatterhalfofthe Springsemestertobetakenhome,reviewed,andsignedbyparents.ThiscourselistwillreflecttheMathplacement (collegepreporaccelerated)determinedbytheAcceleratedCourseCriteriaforrising7thgraders.

Rising8thGrade

Rising8thgradestudentswillmeetwiththeJHCounselorinthespringtofinalizetheircourseselections.Studentswill needtocontinueanacceptablelevelofperformancefortheremainderoftheacademicyeartomaintainplacementinan acceleratedcourse.Theschoolreservestherighttochangeastudent’splacementifastudent’sacademicperformance warrantssuchaction

Schedule Changes

Pleasenotethefollowingregardingschedulechanges:

● Itisimportantforstudentstoreviewtheirfull-yearscheduleatthebeginningoftheacademicyearwhen thereismoreflexibilityinaccommodatingchangesthatcouldaffectthesecondsemester.

Electives

Electivecoursesareindicatedbelowinthecoursedescriptions.All7thgradestudentswillberequiredtotakeStudent Success(year-long)andaPhysicalEducationcourse(year-long).Pleaseseethecoursedescriptionssectionbelowfor whichclassescountasPhysicalEducationcourses.Therefore,7thgradestudentswillhavetheoptionofadditionally choosingoneyear-longelectivecourse.All8thgradestudentswillberequiredtotakeHealth(semester-long)and CareerPreparednessB(FinancialStewardship)(semester-long)andaPhysicalEducationcourse(year-long). Semester averages are calculated based on 90% semester grade and 10% finalexam (HighSchoolcreditcoursesare calculatedbasedon80%semestergradeand20%finalexam)

Reportcardswillbepostedattheendofeachsemester

IncompleteGrades

1. StudentswhohavenotturnedinallworkbytheendofthegradingperiodwillbegivenanIncomplete(INC), withthreedaystocompletemissingassignments.

2 Studentsmaynottakeasemesterexaminanysubjectifallworkhasnotbeencompleted Failuretotakethe examontime,withoutpriorapprovalbythePrincipal,willresultina“0.”

TheAcademicSupportProgramenablesBriarwoodChristianSchooltomeetthediverseeducationalneedsofeach studentwhileequippingthewholechildforlifefromaBiblicalperspective.TheAcademicSupportProgramatBCS isforstudentswithdocumentedevidenceoflearningdifferences.Thegoalistoprovidesupport,accountabilityand encouragementtostudents,motivatingstudentstousetheirGod-givengiftstobecomeconfident,independent,and activelifelonglearners.

Thefollowingguidelineshavebeenestablishedtodocumentastudent’seligibilityfortheAcademicSupport Program,determinetheappropriateplacementintheprogram,andassesstheneedforspecificaccommodationsin thestudent’sacademicplan:

ThefollowingguidelinessupporttheSchool’sintentiontoprovidethebesteducationpossibleforeachstudent.

● TobeeligibletoreceiveAcademicSupportServices,astudentmusthaveappropriateandcurrent documentationindicatinganeedforspecialconsideration.Currentandappropriatedocumentationis definedasafullpsychologicalevaluationwithinthreeyearsfromthestartofAcademicSupportServices considerationfromalicensedpsychologistorpsychometrist. DistinctionofAccommodation

BCSprovidesqualifyingstudentswithaccommodations,notmodifications Anaccommodationdoesnotreducethe requiredmaterialtobelearnedandassessed,asamodificationwould.

Anaccommodationallowsthestudenttoperformaswellastheirpeersbyremovingbarrierstolearning.An accommodationplanensuresequalaccesstolearningthatmaybeprohibitedduetoimpairment.
