Honolulu, HI: University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. BACKGROUND & ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This manual is a fundamental component of the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit (HHDT) and is based on findings from the Future of Hawai‘i’s Housing (FOHH) research project conducted at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) for the Hawai‘i Public Housing Authority (HPHA). This work was made possible through the generosity and insights of the families interviewed across the Hawaiian archipelago and the close collaboration with the HPHA Executive Director and leadership team. The authors also acknowledge the many external partners, topic experts, advisors, and numerous paid members of the UHM project team, including student assistants, recent graduates, and full-time project staff, whose contributions were essential to this work. What is the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit? The Holistic Housing Design Toolkit is a collection of tools and resources intended to inspire future designs, inform redevelopment processes, and support community engagement activities in the future planning of mixed-income / mixed-finance housing in Hawai‘i and the rest of the world. This toolkit is comprised of three manuals, a series of sorting cards and a digital app that are organized in groups identified by color. Yellow How-To Guide This How-To Guide provides an overview of the toolkit, instructions, worksheets, checklists and use cases. It is intended as a starting point and invites readers to adapt, apply, share and add to this set of resources. Blue Set Centered on values and qualitative attributes, the Blue Set contains existing case studies and proposed design strategies and actions for Holistic Housing. Green Set Focused on density, quantitative data and design elements, the Green Set contains existing examples and proposed designs based on the tangible aspects of holistic housing described in the Blue Set. These hands-on tools and resources are based on foundational research conducted for the Hawai‘i Public Housing Authority that began with in-home conversations with families on five islands and are rooted in learnings from the global pandemic. The toolkit is designed to be used in: • Highly public settings • Community workshops • Neighborhood pop-up events • Team brainstorming sessions • Educational activities • Developing and reviewing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) • Generating and evaluating design concepts For more information please visit holistichousinglab.org

Who is the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit for? The Holistic Housing Design Toolkit is intended to be used by a variety of agents, and hopes to ignite conversations that lead to better housing for all. Possible agents (or users) include: 1. Students and Instructors The Toolkit can serve educational purposes, as a generative or evaluative to teach or learn about topics related to the built environment including but not limited to the design of dwelling, housing, neighborhoods and cities. 2. Institutions, Non-Profit Agencies and Design Firms To Toolkit can serve as a generative or evaluative resource for professional organizations involved in the design of projects or intending to establish metrics and design considerations for sustainability, walkabilty and equity based on a bottom-up approach. 3. General Public The Toolkit helps break down design considerations for non-specialists to help facilitate community discussions and solicit input on the design of their communities.

How-To Use the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit? The toolkit does not intend to prescribe specific modes of use, but rather presents suggestions for potential activities, questions and examples of use-cases. Readers are invited to mix and match tools and explore activities for different audiences. Data Points & Cross-Referencing The components in this toolkit are cross-referenced and can be linked to each other through a series of data points. These data points can be used for sorting, pairing and comparing information. Data points and potential cross-references are highlighted in yellow throughout the manual. Worksheets & Checklists A series of worksheets and checklists are included alongside related components inviting users to keep track of learnings or discussions and customize content.

Where To Use the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit ? The Holistic Housing Design Toolkit invites facilitators to shift from static presentations to dynamic discussion-based learning and problem-solving. The toolkit can be used or deployed in a variety of contexts and settings. In educational and professional contexts, classroom activities or team sessions can be held in existing rooms or office spaces. Large tables or other horizontal surfaces can serve to lay out sorting cards, while walls or other vertical surfaces can display supporting information. In public settings, a DIY space can be setup using readily available materials, such as stands and lightweight furniture. Although not required, customized spaces which reflect or integrate the local culture can provide a data-rich environment that visitors can identify with. This can help facilitate place-specific conversations grounded in local needs. This could be done by collaborating with a partner organization to design and/or build a local, community-oriented space for engagement. The following pages feature examples of dynamic layouts for a variety of spatial environments, as well as a checklist of considerations for planning events using the Holistic Housing Design Toolkit.
How-To Guide
77
Custom Spatial Environment The “Lawn Loungers” were designed for the Holistic Housing Lab as a mobile environment for community engagement in Hawai‘i.
Quarter-Circle: Posters facing inward. Wall delineates space for parallel activities.
The everyday lawn chair served as the design inspiration for the constructs, reflecting the impromptu nature of their deployment, their natural pose in public spaces, and their inherent, neighborly personality. To design a custom space for your location consider: 1. Tone: The character or feeling of a specific place or situation (e.g. playful, casual, serious, professional, etc.). What

atmosphere do you want for your event? 2. Perception: How visitors and participants may interpret physical attributes of the event space (materials, geometries, textures, colors, patterns, etc.). Do these match the desired tone? 3. Deployment: The conditions for set-up and take-down (e.g. budget, time, crew, weather, etc.). Keep track of pre- and

post-event logistics. 4. The Environment as a System: The collections of event elements and objects make up one cohesive, experiential environment. Stands, tables, seating, t-shirts, posters, tools, and other tangible aspects of the kit should cohere. Distributed: Posters face two directions and create parallel spaces to interact with on both sides.

FEEDBACK
Determine the best layout for your event and location. Different layouts generate different dynamics. Consider the area for setting up and the type of activity before choosing a layout or configuration. Where will facilitators be? Where will visitors be welcomed? Where will they sit for an activity or leave feedback?
Select a mode for collecting feedback. Develop online surveys, QR codes, or checklists to document the information.
Circle: Creates a welcoming, communal space, focusing visitors on content without external distractions.
