We were asked to design an “artist in residence”, live/work project in Essex County’s Branch Brook Park. With our design, we aim to create a space for our client, Tom and future artists to dedicate their time to their work. Our goal is to nurture the arts by providing talented individuals with an inspiring residential environment where they can create lasting works of imagination.

Beach pollution has emerged as a pression global issie, effecting not only the natural beauty of coastlines but also the health of marine ecosystems and the well-being of communities that rely on these environments. From plastic debris and chemical runoff to sewage discharge, various forms of pollution threaten the delicate balance of marine life and pose significant risks to beachgoers. As tourism and recreational activities flourish in coastal areas, the conseqences of pollution become evident, promoting urgant calls for sustainable practices and community engagement. Addressing this issue is essential for preserving out beaches for future generations and maintaining ecological intergrity of our beaches and oceans.

[inconspicuous] the entrance is only discernible to those with the insight to perceive beyond the obvious. To gain access, individuals must possess an intuitive understanding of the intricacies of the door mechanism and its handle, demonstrating a keen awareness of the hidden components that facilitate entry. Those who lack this understanding will find themselves excluded from entering.

Liberty State Park | ARCH 196 | Spring 2024
Prof. Julie Chen
Liberty State Park has been a significant contributor to the history of the United States of America over the years. However, the question remains whether it can symbolize what it can become. Climate change is a critical issue, and human activities are accelerating the shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Therefore, it’s essential to change our ways to prevent further damage. With my design, I aim to create a structure that will educate people about the climate crisis through film negatives projected on the walls. This design will help reduce our carbon footprint. The structure will have sustainable features such as rainwater collection to supply restrooms and the development of the films, adaptable solar panels to power the structure.

NEGATIVE FILM
Projected onto the floor to teach the guests about the sea level crisis
SOLAR PANELS
To harnest energy from the sun to power the museum.
METAL FRAME
Systems used from EX 2 to create structural support for the roof.
RAMMED EARTH
Using compacted layers of aggregate, gravel, sand, silt, and small amount clay compressed within a framwork. Has high thermal mass, low embodied energy, and can be reused if demolished.
WHITE OAK
Light background for a clear canvas the negative films to project onto.
Allows the structure to float. Has a higher compressive strength that rivals steel.
STREAMLINED STILTS
Allow water to pass through without damage. The area under the stilts can be used to store canoes, fodder, etc.

The quiet pulse of its past. The roots of its history, buried deep in the soil of forgotten streets, had been left to grow over, entangled in time’s web of decay and neglect. Yet, in those very roots was the potential for renewal. To acknowledge Newark’s rich history and diverse community to create a community pool that will enhance the beauty of the city. The roots of this city have overgrown its pot. It’s time to re-pot and adapt to the needs of the community. By appreciating the past we designed a place for future generations.
