New Tradition Comes to Brewster Academy little short however there were donuts and cider to make up for that,” said Mila Bahr’ 27. There was also cornhole and other outdoor activities that students could participate in. The Science Center consisted of a nature walk through the park to see many animals outside. It was very educational where students and faculty could learn more about their animals and there was also a time when you could go inside and there was a small “animal show”. Science Center staff showed the students a skunk and more. The hike was a beautiful experience and took around – minutes to get to the top of the hill where students could relax and see many trees changing colors and also had an entire view of Squam Lake “I think it was fun and a little bit too hard for the less experienced hikers in the group,” said Jackson Day ’26. There have been many positive things being said about the hike and people hope that there will be similar options next year. Overall, New Hampshire Day was a success and will be a new annual tradition that many people in our community will look forward to in the coming years. A special thanks to Ellery Gnazzo, Boaz Sochaczevski, and Mrs. Kerin for making this possible and helping the Brewster community connect with one another.

On Monday, October 23, Brewster Academy started a new annual tradition, New Hampshire Day! This year senior prefects Ellery Gnazzo ’24 and Boaz Sochaczevski ’24 worked with head of school Kristy Kerin to plan a fun day that also goes with our word of the year “unity” and let students and faculty see what New Hampshire has to offer. On Thursday, October 19, students and faculty learned that instead of a normal academic day, they needed to sign up for one out of the three activities provided. “Boaz and I helped out Ms Kerin figure out the places to go and some activities for the night before,” said Gnazzo. “To pick the 3 venues we basically just did some research about a ton of places in the area, some of them being places we had seen driving or places we found online!” The options they decided to go with were as follows, the Moulton Farm corn maze in Meredith, NH, hiking Rattlesnake Mountain in Rumney, NH, or going to Squam Lake Science Center in Holderness to see many wild animals and learn about New Hampshire’ ecosystem. Moulton Farm was a fun experience where students could go through a corn maze, buy doughnuts, and visit a small market where you could buy some delicious fresh apples. “It was great. The corn maze was a

BA Haunted House Scares Local Children Annually

When the leaves start changing and the air gets colder Brewster prepared for the yearly Halloween traditions. Every event is just as enjoyable as the last, ranging from fun and uplifting to spooky and scary. New traditions come and go every fall, but the three that Brewster students and faculty have participated in and look forward to the most are helping out at Mr. Palmer’s haunted house, participating in RAK community service events alongside Mrs. Found, and being allowed to dress up for class on Halloween. Each tradition is unique and special in its own way and allows students an opportunity to participate in the Wolfeboro community while also getting into the spirit of Halloween. You can hear the screams from a mile away as Mr. Palmer, a team leader and history teacher at Brewster Academy, runs his annual haunted house in his garage on Halloween night. (left) Brewster students prepare to scare local children on Halloween night at Mr. Palmer's Haunted House on Clark Road.

The line outside the entrance seems like it goes on forever and kids from all over Wolfeboro and its neighboring towns come down just to take a walk through his dark, dank garage. This tradition started around 10 years ago when Mr. Palmer got into a friendly competition with his neighbors. I went ahead and asked Mr. Palmer about his Haunted House and here is what I discovered: Q: How long have you been running your haunted house? A: About 10 years, the major catalyst for it was my neighbor who started handing out hot chocolate and ribbing me that all the children were going to her house! My competitive juices started flowing! I started to build up more and more... my neighbor came through the haunted house and got really scared! Q: How long does it take to prepare? A: 10 hours or so. Q: On average how many Brewster students participate in helping out? A: Usually about 30 – 40. cont on pg. 2

Q: What is your favorite part about running it? A: It’s so creative. I am too old to build sandcastles so I can help to create the haunted house and it turns out to be an awesome creative outlet. I already have a new idea for next year and have bought lights too - going purple next year! My other favorite part was seeing the fun BA students have with it - several got really good at the jump scares and said, “I had no idea how much fun this is!”

Unbeatable Golf Team takes MAISAD Champion Title by Audrey Burke ’24

Crew Hosts Winni-Chase Regatta by David Mason ’26

Brewster crew has recently hit a huge stride in the past few years. The program started in 1989 and has a rich history of triumph and success. They are now competing in one of if not the most competitive and prestigious races in the country, the Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Boston on October 2022. The massive team roster sends its best racers to Massachusetts competing against the best of the best. The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) is almost 60 years old, being founded in 1965, and it currently has a 15-seat board to facilitate the logistic super-performance that the HOCR is. It consists of over 100 volunteers to manage the thousands of athletes who attend and the many tens of thousands of fans who come from all over the world to watch. The HOCR also has a four-person group of fulltime professionals who coordinate with rowers and facilitate the acquiring of sponsorships. As Brewster competes with some of the best rowing teams in the country they managed to bring home very impressive results such as the women’s youth doubles which placed 36th out of 54 other teams. This places them within the top 66 percent of all the teams in that race, with a time of 23:10.178. Brewster’s

girls’ novice team, which is mildly synonymous with a JV designation, was able to beat out five varsity teams in the women’s youth 8+ race which landed them 85th out of 90. 8+ means that the boat is crewed by eight rowers with a coxswain. This is very impressive as the competition included clubs that are solely dedicated to rowing and specify in such. Beating multiple varsity boats with newer rowers is an incredible achievement. The Brewster Crew team specifically is made up of over 35 members who have currently competed in over five intense regattas during the fall season. The fall rowing season consists of a long-distance style rowing competition which is for 5000 meters, scored by time over distance. One of the only ways to keep track of time is to compare yourself to the other vessels. This year the Brewster Crew has also had major success in their other regattas such as the two bronze medals in the Head of the Fish Regatta. Another monumental moment this year was the opportunity to host the Winni-Chase regatta in October which brought multiple medals including two first-place finishes. The Winni-Chase Regatta is a distance regatta spanning 4500 meters and including S-turns in preparation for the HOCR. The Winni-

a score of 81. The whole team includes an additional 3 players, Liam Flaherty, Will Hunter, and Casey Light. I was able to get the chance to sit down with Yamamura and discuss what has contributed to their triumphs of the season. Yamamura has been on the team now for four years and has loved it. It was only in his sophomore season that he was able to compete in match play against other schools, but he was not able to claim a victory in the MAISAD championship. Yamamura shares that Coach Martin and Coach Sotaro have both been able to significantly improve the team’s mental game, helping prepare the boys before matches and supporting them after, regardless of the score. In addition, the members of the team never fail to bring a positive attitude. “Everyone is always eager to get out there and play,” said Yamamura. “Every day the guys are always happy to be out there playing”. Coach Martin said that the team was undefeated this season, which he called "epic". Among the highlights, there were even two holes-in-one from Charlie Martin and Liam Flaherty. If the program continues to accept players with similar goals and aspirations, the Brewster Golf Team has a great chance of continuing this winning streak.

Chase was the first intercollegiate match to ever be held in America, held here on Lake Winnipesaukee in 1852. On the second day of the race, the boats started at Worcester Island and finished in our very own backyard, Brewster Beach. Coach Varga-Wells planned the regatta in part to honor that historic event. While the race taking place in our backyard lake was quite an undertaking, the Brewster community and rowing community took it in stride,

bringing in hundreds of people from around the area and several teams with multiple boats and trailers. The logistial undertaking was very impressive from the community consisting of parking, tents, people, food, and much more. The community came out for Brewster’s crew with a large number of spectators watching Brewster bring home many successful results. While they participate in a relatively cont on pg. 5

Tyler Berkman '25 competing against Hebron Academy at the Lake Winnipesaukee golf course.

The Brewster Academy Golf Team claimed another championship win on October 20th in the MAISAD tournament at the Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club for the third year in a row. The team posted the second lowest possible team score, according to Coach Byron Martin. The golf team has been a part of the MAISAD league for nine years now. Coaches Martin and Sotaro have had a huge impact on the success of the team. They held their first ever preseason this year. Coach Martin said that despite several seniors departing last year, those spots on the team are now filled with competitive undergraduate players who have a few years ahead. "A great chemistry developed throughout the year," said Coach Martin, "despite the competitive battle that was waged each day to see who was going to earn a top six spot for the next match." In their most recent championship, the four members of the team placed in the top 5 and were announced as a part of the all-MAISAD roster. The four players include Junior Tyler Berkman with an 18-hole score of 72, Freshman Charlie Martin with an 18-hole score of 76, Senior Mason Meltzer with a score of 80, and Senior Ryo Yamamura with

News Analysis

Trump Stages Rally in Wolfeboro

Well, the Don got it on upon Wolfeboro’s lawn. We’ve all seen the rambunctious moments from his many rallies, silly speeches, and outrageous presidency. But none of them have happened in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, until now. Donald Trump arrived in Wolfeboro on Monday, October 19, 2023, and began speaking at 12:00 noon in the Kingswood Arts Center on Main Street. All around were people out to support Trump and his campaign. News vans were rolling, parking lots were filled, and his supporters flocked to the scene in preparation for his speech that afternoon. We arrived around 9:00 in the morning, and in the parking lot rental cars were abundant. The abundance of rental cars means that a large number of people flew in or drove from far out of state. The line was exceptionally long, with around 1500 people in it at any given time. Beginning behind the art center, people walked around the building until lines were made plumb towards the front of the building. On each side of the straight-lined area were interesting characters. Several fellow members of the press class were in attendance, including Daily Show staff reporter Jordan Klepper. The line moved slowly, some might even say absurdly slowly, and towards the front, a plethora of flags and memorabilia were present. Among the flags, some notable mentions are as follows: Former President Donald Trump surrounded by explosions and armed to the teeth, a South Vietnamese flag, ironically, and a dozen varieties of Trump flags. Among the most notable propaganda found would indubitably be the poster containing three photos.

The first is a photo of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with a large X crossed over her face. The second photo is the same except the person in question is Nancy Pelosi. Above both of them is a photo of Obama puppeteering Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. This too is crossed out with three separate red Xs. Several propagandistic bumper stickers were also for public perception. Some of the more controversial among them are transphobic, such as the “Womanhood is a birthright, not a costume,” bumper sticker. This was accompanied by a fellow car’s bumper sticker that reads: “.” A significant number of the cars with these offensive stickers were accompanied by pop culture references to anime. Aside from cringe, there was also the occasional “Punisher” sticker; of the green lives and blue lives matter variation. Nationalistic/statist flags could also be seen, reflecting poorly on the global citizenship of attendees. Now to reflect on notable characters, one must begin with the most preposterous, “gagged up,” and incongruous of the lot. Among these fine fellows was a man in black garb, adorned by a long, protruding-nosed, black “plague” mask. This individual had been ejected from the rally, and we were able to interview him. He declared his purpose, hence here written: “I am recruiting for the deep state, as a Donald Trump supporter, to ensure the FBI clamps down on leftist activists, and to make sure the FBI cracks down on commies.” His ”real answer” was followed up by his reveal that he was an online writer who was anti-Trump. In terms of other interviews: we spoke with Mr. T.J. Palmer who was also in attendance. The independent plainclothes examiner-reporter-investigator

named T.J. Palmer, declared, “...about 6 people [that I talked to] believed we did not land on the moon.” Mr. Palmer was among several Brewster faculty, students, and community members who attended the rally. According to a young man that we also spoke to named T.J. Joy, he attended to the rally to see Trump because, “this world and the people in it and God’s creations are beautiful, and I wanted to see Trump in person.” He can assure the audience that the people in the area are

Christian Trump supporters. According to him, the experience was “fun.” A further notable mention would be the interview conducted with Brewster alum Michael Dower ’86. Mr. Dower was not in line, but sitting off to the side in a lawn chair, presenting a sign to the communal asking, “What does leadership look like?” He said his point was to have people think about his question, and to encourage people to think about what they like and respect instead of focusing on the negatives.

small amount of competitions, the team has a strenuous practice schedule that has prepared the team for their amazing performances throughout the season. There is a ridiculous amount of training that the crew team endures. “I think the training is kind of why I do the sport,” said Ryan Kristjansen ‘25 a Junior spring crew member. I joined the sport just for me to get stronger and fitter…I wasn’t that into the sport. But as soon as I joined, about a month in, I started getting really into it. It kind of sucks you in.” Whether it be on the erg rowing machines or on the water the crew team can always be seen practicing in preparation for their big regattas. “Regatta day,” said Kristjansen ‘25 about the typical race day for his spring races. “Usually, it’ll be on either Sunday or Saturday. We’ll wake up relatively early, and then we’ll drive on the bus probably like 1 to 2 hours. When we get there, we unload all the boats. It’s really fun because, like, we’re all like, working together, like getting all the getting the boats off the rack, putting the boats together. You have to deconstruct and reconstruct them multiple times throughout the day.”. It’s safe to say that the Crew teams are very hard-working and deserving of

their results. The coaches of Brewster’s crew team, Ms. Katy Varga-Wells, Ms. Nicole McElhoe, and Mr. John O’Neill, are not to go unrecognized as they are the facilitators and give training incredible opportunities to their athletes. “The coaches are great. I love the coaches,” said the 6’4” blonde athlete Kristjansen ‘25, “like they’re tough on you. But like, at the end of the day, you’re almost like. You’re like really good friends because... you’re sharing like a group. Like a group experience. You all have to go through the pain to experience, like the fruits of your labor. And you all, like, understand each other at the end of the day.” He expressed his gratitude toward his coaches for the 22-23 season. Kristjansen will be competing in the spring crew team with their sprint races instead of the long-distance races. Kristjansen ‘25 currently holds zero offers from any Division One rowing programs. Brewster Crew’s success highlights their dedication to the sport and their resilience as athletes. Competing in some of the toughest realms for crew athletes and training obsessively has prepared Brewster Crew for the coming season and brought some of the best performances this school has ever seen.
