What is the difference between a symphony, an orchestra, and a philharmonic?
The short answer is: NOTHING! Among the top tier orchestras, in the U.S., are the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony. The word “orchestra” defines a group of musicians performing a concert “Symphony” means harmony “Philharmonic” is the love of harmony. Orchestras may choose their names based on how it sounds with their city, state, or to differentiate it from other orchestras located in the same city or area.

Will I recognize any of the music?
How long are the performances?
Most concerts last approximately 2 hours, including a 15 minute intermission. Any significant exceptions to this time frame will be noted on the individual concert page on our website. Each performance is divided into two parts, with an intermission in the middle
When should I clap?
Generally, you clap only after a piece of music is completed For example, if you’re listening to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, which has four movements, it is generally considered appropriate to only clap after the last movement You can look at your program book to find out how many movements a piece has. Usually, there is a short pause between movements. Although, sometimes there is no discernible gap If you’re unsure, you’ll know the piece is over when Maestro Confessore turns around to face the audience. However, even though the norm is to remain quiet between movements, if you are moved to display your appreciation after a particularly exciting movement, feel free to clap away!
How many musicians are on stage?
Typically, there are approximately 65 musicians on stage. The number of musicians required depends on the piece of music being performed. At times, we have a smaller orchestra and, at other times, we have as many as 100 musicians on stage.
You’ll probably recognize far more than you would imagine Many of today’s popular songs, television shows and movies use classical themes, including the “Lone Ranger” theme (Rossini’s William Tell Overture), the Bugs Bunny cartoon “What’s Opera, Doc?” (Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries) and Billy Joel’s “This Night” (Beethoven’s Pathétique Piano Sonata), to name a few
What kind of accommodations does the King Center provide for patrons with disabilities and impairments?
The King Center offers a variety of accommodations for guests with ADA requirements Please speak to an usher for more information.

Orchestra, corporate sponsors, concert sponsors, individual donors and concert attendees I am so pleased and proud to be a member of our BSO family. Please consider introducing your friends to the BSO by bringing them to a concert, fundraising event or a South Guild luncheon meeting

Christopher Confessore currently serves as Music Director of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra and Principal POPS Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. During his acclaimed tenure in Brevard, the orchestra has enjoyed a dramatic and sustained period of artistic excellence and has been praised for its innovative programming, spirited performances and broad repertoire Mr Confessore joined the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s conducting staff in 2000 During that time, he has led the ASO in hundreds of Pops, Masterworks, Educational/Outreach, and Outdoor performances across the state of Alabama
Mr. Confessore’s schedule as a guest conductor has included appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Naples Philharmonic, Charlotte (NC) Symphony, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, Amarillo Symphony, Hartford Symphony Orchestra, New Mexico Philharmonic, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared as a conductor for two of Walt Disney World’s most elaborate productions: The Candlelight Processional at EPCOT – a production featuring a full orchestra, 200-voice choir and celebrity narrators including Brendan Fraser, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Sinise, and Sigourney Weaver – and The Music of Pixar: A Symphony of Characters at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Throughout his career, Mr. Confessore has demonstrated a strong commitment to sharing symphonic music with young people. During the 2025-26 season he will conduct more than 50 performances of 10 different educational programs with orchestras across the country for a combined audience of more than 80,000 eager young listeners.
Heralded as a sensitive accompanist and inspiring collaborator, Christopher Confessore has accompanied a distinguished list of concert artists, including Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, and Lang Lang. As a Pops conductor, he has appeared with a diverse group of superstars, including Grammy Award winners Art Garfunkel, Amy Grant, Trisha Yearwood, Roberta Flack, Patti LaBelle, Judy Collins, Indigo Girls, Marvin Hamlisch, LeAnn Rimes, Chris Botti, Peabo Bryson, Rick Springfield, Patti Austin, Jon Anderson, Nanci Griffith, Lee Greenwood, and Charlie Daniels and Tony Award winners Idina Menzel and Jennifer Holliday. Music columnist Mary Colurso of The Birmingham News remarked “Anyone who regards the symphony as stuffy and elitist hasn’t been to a SuperPops show when Confessore’s in charge. He exudes nice-guy appeal on stage, along with real warmth, a sense of humor and smarts to spare.”
Mr Confessore holds a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Southern California and the Bachelor of Music degree in Bassoon Performance from Florida State University
