The Board of the Brentwood Regional Community Chest extends its sincere thanks to the community for once again supporting the annual Christmas food and toy distribution. “What began nearly 60 years ago through the generosity and vision of Rose Pierce continues to thrive today because of the remarkable compassion and commitment of our community,” said Dana Eaton, copresident of the Brentwood Regional Community Chest. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of individuals, families, businesses, and community groups, the board was proud to serve more than 500 local families this holiday season. In November, Pittsburg announced its own new city manager as well. El Campanil Theatre to continue operations into 2026, but still needs help By Connor Robles Correspondent

El Campanil Theatre in Antioch recently started a fundraiser, Keep Arts Alive in Antioch, to cover their operating costs until the end of 2025. As of Dec. 22, they have raised $23,623 with many being monthly donors, but still less than half of its goal – to keep the theatre afloat, and the board “has decided that [they] will be able to continue into 2026,” according to a note from the board sent to The Press. Executive Director Joshua Price thanked numerous donors from Antioch and beyond for supporting their historic local theatre. The fundraiser is ongoing, with donations “coming in every day,” according to Price, and the fundraising goal is $50,000, according to fundraising chairperson Sharon Sobel Idul. El Campanil relies primarily on donations due to the fact that most of their shows are put on by third parties, meaning that most money from ticket sales goes to third parties instead of the theatre itself. Since Oct. 10, they have sought monthly donations and one-time gifts to help sustain operations. Idul said that to secure long-term funding, El Campanil will be “continuing the process of writing grants, finding bigger community partners who can help [them]

Local retirement community embraces fundraising for LMC students By Sean Tongson Correspondent

An idea to invent a new club from a local retirement community has since blossomed into a non-profit organization benefitting local college students. Residents from Trilogy at the Vineyards, a 55-and-over gated resort community in Brentwood, started TEACH At The Vineyards, a nonprofit with the goal of helping local college students in financial need. According to board member Beverly Bell, since its inception in 2016, Trilogy and TEACH at the Vineyards have raised over $250,000 in aid for the students at Los Medanos College (LMC) through a variety of fundraisers. “We understand the importance in offering a helping hand to students wanting to achieve their educational goals, and that’s the passion that drives our efforts to fundraise,” Bell said. “We not only raise money for the LMC Foundation, but we also will mentor or participate in studentled activities on campus.” According to Bell, the funds raised have been handed over to the LMC Foundation to disburse as needed for emergency reserves to keep students who need money in school. The money is also used to supply tools and supplies to the college to support their educational programs. “In addition, material supplies such as clothing, furniture, pantry food items, bedding, bath supplies and kitchenware, all exuberantly donated by Trilogy members, have been given to individual students when financial crises have occurred to disrupt their lives and their ability to otherwise remain in school,” Bell said. She said that the idea of mentoring col-

BEVERLY BELL lege students was another goal of TEACH at the Vineyards, and had a lot of support from Trilogy residents, LMC, along with businesses and residents of Brentwood. Partnering with LMC, a series of campusorganized focus groups was created, which placed TEACH volunteers at the same table with college students to help address certain topics and needs. Originally, Bell said the plan envisioned a sort of “reciprocity” from Los Medanos College in the form of providing residents at Trilogy at the Vineyards with adult education opportunities. By working together however, Bell said they were able to establish a program by which lecturers and professors from the college came to the Trilogy clubhouse or into their homes via Zoom during COVID, and provided lectures mainly focused on U.S. and local history. Bell said that as a result, LMC eventually formed its own adult education program of lectures, which are available to Trilogy members and the larger community on

Bell said a more hands-on mentoring program matching individual Trilogy volunteer skills with individual college students’ needs is in the works and being devised. “We chose the acronym TEACH as a

sort of mission statement: Together — Educating, Advocating, Coaching, Helping students succeed”, Bell said. “It’s very much a win-win for us all.” Some recent activity from TEACH include a summer barbecue picnic in July, which raised $10,000. Additionally, Bell said the creation of a Trilogy at the Vineyards cookbook engaged the entire community of about 2,000 residents, showcasing 560 recipes with all proceeds donated to the LMC Foundation. Other fundraisers have included World Market Bazaar, Trivial Pursuit for Education, Elegant Evenings on the Lawn for Education, and Bingo Night. In 2022, TEACH also hosted a gala to celebrate the opening of the new LMC Brentwood Center, which had then-Mayor Joel Bryant as an emcee along with Susannah Meyer and Jovita Mendoza, who were City Councilmembers at the time, in attendance. “Truly, our Trilogy’s TEACH at the Vineyards and Los Medanos College are a thriving, ongoing, and permanent partnership benefiting both our communities, young and old,” Bell said. Registration opens for Rotary Club of Brentwood’s youth poster contest By Isaac Arriaga Correspondent

The Brentwood Rotary Club is holding the Jack Gaughan Youth Poster Contest for Brentwood middle school and high school students once again. Free registration for the art contest is open from now until Jan. 23 through the Rotary Club’s website at www.brentwoodrotaryclub.com/youth-poster-contest. Bill Harms, Brentwood Rotary Club member and committee chairman of the Jack Gaughan Youth Poster Contest, has run it for the past six years. “What we try to do with the contest is give youth in the community a chance to express their feelings,” he said. “It’s what Rotary is really about too. It’s serving the community and finding ways that we can help youth.” This year’s contest is named in honor of John Thomas “Jack” Gaughan, Brentwood Rotary Club member and former president of Brentwood Arts Commission who passed away last year at the age of 89. Harms remembered Gaughan as a supporter of the arts. “Jack was someone who was very active in the local arts scene - active in the local drama group, he did really good things for this community, so we named the poster contest in his name,” he said.

Students who register to participate in the contest can pick up a blank poster form Starry Nite Studios, 2545 Sand Creek Road #136 in Brentwood. Completed posters must be returned to Starry Nite Studios by Jan. 23 to be displayed. All posters will be displayed in the lobby of the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St., throughout February.

Judging of the posters by the Art Guild of the Delta will take place on Feb. 5. An award ceremony will follow that same night at 6 p.m. There will be two separate categories of winners -- one for middle school students and another for high school students. Winners will receive $300, second-place finishers get $200, third-place finishers get $100, and there

will also be honorable mention winners who get $50. Harms said “The contest gives Brentwood middle and high school students a chance to create a piece of art with a message that communicates an issue important to them, be it protecting the environment, caring for others, having too much homework, feeling overwhelmed sometimes, or something else. The first level judging for the Lions International Peace Poster Contest was held recently by the Brentwood Lions Club at the Brentwood Senior Center. These posters are among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. This year’s contest theme is “Together As One.” The judges were Nora Koch of the City of Brentwood Arts Commission; Rosalinda Grejsen, co-founder of the Art Guild of the Delta, and Nora TeStruth of the Livermore Art Association. Vaishnavi Gurram, Adams Middle School also won first place in the Lions District, which includes 38 Bay Area clubs, contest in November. Vaishnavi’s poster will continue to compete in the multi-district contest to be held in January. Brentwood Lions Club was especially impressed by the students’ understanding of the “Together As One” theme. “This artwork represents how people from different cultures and countries can stand together as one world, while they paint the earth to be filled with unity and peace,” Vaishnavi said. PG&E prepares for strong storms, offers safety tips Ahead of a pair of winter storms expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and mountain snow to Northern and Central California during the holiday week, PG&E crews are preparing to respond to expected power outages. The storms are forecast to move through the PG&E’s service area with the first system having arrived on Tuesday followed by the second system later on Wednesday, Christmas Eve into Thursday, Christmas Day. They could result in widespread outages. PG&E’s in-house meteorologist says parts of the North Coast could see from four to 10 inches of rain. Snow levels are expected to be above 6,000 feet, the utility said in a press release. PG&E has activated its Emergency Operations Center as well as regional and local storm rooms. Although impacts are anticipated system-wide, PG&E is positioning additional crews where storm impact is expected to be most severe. More than 5,500 PG&E front-line coworkers and contractors will be on storm duty, including more than 1,500 gas and electric crew personnel and nearly 3,000 available tree workers. “Just as PG&E prepares for natural disasters and emergencies, we encourage our customers to prepare as well,” said Peter Kenny, PG&E’s Senior Vice President of Electric Operations. “These storms have the potential to disrupt holiday plans. Therefore, we have pre-positioned resources and will be an all-hands-on-deck response from PG&E to safely restore power as quickly as possible.” The utility also has been communicating with cities and counties to share preparation and plans. Storm safety tips Just as PG&E follows its plan to prepare for and respond to a storm, it urges customers to prepare their families and neighbors as well. Here are some storm safety tips:

Never touch downed wires: If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and extremely dangerous. Do not touch or try to move it — and keep children and animals away. Report downed power lines immediately by calling 9-1-1 and then PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. Use generators safely: Customers with standby electric generators should ensure they are properly installed by a licensed electrician in a well-ventilated area. Improperly installed generators pose a significant danger to customers, as well as crews working on powerlines. If using portable generators, be sure they are in a wellventilated area. Use flashlights, not candles: During a power outage, use battery-operated flashlights and not candles, due to the risk of fire. And keep extra batteries on hand. If you must use candles, keep them away from drapes, lampshades, animals and small children. Do not leave candles unattended. Have a backup phone: If you have a telephone system that requires electricity to work, such as a cordless phone or answering machine, plan to have a standard telephone or cellular phone ready as a backup. ing a portable charging device helps to keep your cellphone running. Have fresh drinking water and ice: Freeze plastic containers filled with water to make blocks of ice that can be placed in your refrigerator/freezer to prevent food spoilage. Secure your outside furniture: Strong winds can blow lawn chairs and other outdoor items into powerlines. Turn off appliances: If you experience an outage, unplug or turn off all electrical appliances to prevent overloading circuits and to prevent fire hazards when power is restored. Simply leave a single lamp on to alert you when power returns. Safely clean-up: After the storm, clean up safely. Never touch downed wires and always call 8-1-1 or visit 811express.com at least two full business days before digging to have all underground utilities safely marked. Faster online outage information If an outage occurs, PG&E said its online outage center has been updated and improved based on customer feedback. Significant changes include: • Faster loading times to find important outage information. • An Outage Status Tracker so customers can get status updates on the assessment and repair of their outage. • More local information on the extent of outages around a customer’s home and business. • More information on how to prepare ahead of outages, what causes outages and how PG&E prioritizes restoration work. PG&E will let customers know the cause of an outage, when crews are on their way, the estimated restoration time and when power has been restored. If receiving an outage text, customers can reply “status” to learn the latest information on the outage without visiting the outage page on its website.

Brentwood teen achieves rank of Eagle Scout Giovanni Morello of Brentwood has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in scouting, with Troop 2020. For his Eagle service project, Gio organized and performed on the alto sax in a benefit concert at Heritage High School to support the school’s music program. Proceeds from the event, which raised $1,200, funded new band stands for the jazz band’s saxophone section to enhance the overall presentation of the school’s three jazz bands. Gio completed his Eagle Scout project last year, which came to fruition this month at the Heritage High Band’s Winter Concert on Dec. 9 when the band stands were first used. Brentwood Grove residents raise $1,500 for Tunnels of Joy Brentwood Grove Senior Living residents recently came together to raise more than $1,500 for Tunnels of Joy in Brentwood. What began as a small effort to collect and recycle aluminum cans quickly grew into something much bigger. After learning about 6-year-old Angelo and the medical expenses his family is facing, residents felt called to help. When they heard that Tunnels of Joy would be accepting donations to support Angelo, they rallied with a shared purpose.

How your fireplace can keep you safe and warm this winter By Isaac Arriaga Correspondent

A cold winter might seem like the best time to light a fire and enjoy the warm crackling of logs burning in the fireplace. But before you light that fireplace, know what precautions to take to assure the cozy fire stays in the fireplace. Contra Costa County Fire Protection Department Public Education Coordinator Noelle Crosse suggested yearly inspections of your fireplace to best prevent a fire. “We would specifically recommend having that done each year right before the cold weather starts, so the chimney is nice and clean and ready for the winter season,” she said. Inspectors will check the condition of the fireplace and chimney to assure they are safe to use when it gets cold. Crosse said water leaks are the most common problem found in chimneys that are usually caused by improper installation. Crosse also suggested having your chimney swept before using the fireplace, “Most people think, ‘Oh I haven’t used the fireplace in years, the chimney should be clean’ but there could be potential hazards in the chimney that they don’t see, the most common one being spider webs that can catch on fire and potentially spread a fire,” she said. Crosse also warned that homes in forested areas with lots of trees around are most at risk of fire hazard if they have a dirty chimney. A spiderweb could catch on fire, go up the chimney, and land on a tree or pile of leaves that could start a large wildfire. For houses with wood-burning fireplaces, Crosse had a few suggestions to make sure your fireplace burns efficiently. “When you first start a wood fire, open a door or window because when it’s cold, cold air pressure will shoot down the chimney when the flue is opened,” she said. “Opening a window or door until the fire gets going will release that pressure and help the wood burn.” Cold air pressure can also be caused by keeping the thermostat on when trying to start a fire. Crosse said. “People think they have a clogged chimney because the fire is heating up the house, but it’s really that negative cold air pressure being kept in the house by having the central heating on,” she said. “Just turn it off for about 5-10 minutes to let the wood fire warm the house.” Crosse advised everybody using a woodburning fireplace to make sure that the wood they use is dry and seasoned. She warned of the potential dangers that may occur should you use other materials to burn. “Do not burn Christmas trees, wrapping paper, or other materials in the fireplace,” she said. “Paper burns extremely fast and hot, creating large flames that can ignite flammable substances inside the chimney, leading to a chimney fire. Rapid burning also sends hot embers up the chimney, which can land on your roof or nearby vegetation, starting other fires.” Gas-burning fireplaces require less maintenance and attention, but Crosse also

mentioned the importance of keeping the fireplace clean. Carbon can build up on the pilot and logs causing malfunction with the fireplace. Crosse suggested that you clean and inspect your gas fireplaces for carbon clogs or buildup. She also wanted to remind readers that if they smell gas when the fireplace is off, call PG&E immediately to prevent a potential fire. Crosse suggested that homeowners check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors before starting a fire. “Carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly and the whole unit should be replaced every 10 years,” she said. “The same maintenance schedule applies to all working Smoke alarms in the home.” Ashes left over from a fire should be disposed of properly. Crosse recommended making sure the ashes are cool before disposal and putting them in a metal container outside, at least 10 feet away from your home or any other structures while you clean your fireplace. Having kids unwrap gifts next to a warm fireplace is a classic Christmas tradition, but Crosse said she wants all parents to supervise their children when a fire is active in the house. “With the holidays upon us, make sure to keep any decorations or other flammable items at least 3 feet away from any fireplace, wood stove, or pellet stove,” she said. “And always have a screen in front of the fireplace to catch any logs that might roll or embers that might pop.” Another important point Crosse made about active fireplaces is to never leave the fire unattended. “If you are getting sleepy and getting ready for bed, make sure that the fire is out completely and that everything is secure before leaving or going to bed,” she said. When the weather begins to warm up again, Crosse suggested closing the flue of your chimney. “It’ll save you money on your energy bill,” she said. “Having an open flue is like having an open window, it lets the heat out when it’s cold and it lets the A/C out when it’s hot. Just close the flue when you are no longer using the fireplace.”

Defense remains focus for Freedom as scoring struggle continues Falcons boys soccer end 2025 with 4-1 loss at Ygnacio Valley By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Freedom’s boys soccer team closed the 2025 calendar year 2–4–1 following a 4–1 loss to Ygnacio Valley on Monday, their second straight defeat after a 3–0 setback to Amador Valley last Saturday. Across those two matches, Freedom conceded seven goals, the most they have allowed in any two-game stretch this season, and scored just one, a late goal by Giovanni Ayala in Monday’s loss at the Wolves. Still, Freedom head boys soccer coach Sal Acevedo said the team’s potential success in 2026 comes from the Falcons’ defensive play, despite the team’s struggles in the attacking front. “We’re not a high-scoring team,” Acevedo said. “We have to focus on defending well first. If we’re not scoring enough, it puts pressure on our defensive side.” “We can’t just go up and attack teams and leave ourselves open. That’s not who we are.” Freedom has scored more than one goal in a match just twice, and both times Freedom won – three goals in a 3-0 win at Armijo to open the year and a pair of goals at California High last week in a 2-0 win. The Falcons have scored just seven total goals through the first seven matches and have been shut out three times in their first seven matches. Acevedo added that the team’s recent schedule of matches – five matches in the last nine days dating to

The scheduling is just – we’ve had four games in a week or eight days. No training, and very little rest and recovery. It’s hard to squeeze all these games in that you need to because you want to have enough games to be eligible for (North Coast Section playoffs). So it hurts the players, and I think that has affected us.” Monday’s match saw the Falcons’ batteries eventu-

ally run out. Freedom held Ygnacio Valley scoreless through the first half behind four saves from senior goalkeeper Mason Crawford, including two point-blank stops on headers at the near right post. The Falcons also created early chances to open the second half, but couldn’t convert before mistakes in the back shifted the match early in the second half. Ygnacio Valley’s Alexander Villarce opened the scoring in the 49th minute off of an errant touch of the ball by Crawford on a pass back to him, then doubled their lead 10 minutes later on another errant pass in the back to Crawford, this time with Edgar Torres Quintanilla taking advantage of the loose ball and tapping it into the back of the net for the Wolves first two goals of the day. “It was just two mistakes in the back,” Acevedo said. “It changes everything. Going into the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against San Ramon Valley, Heritage was down 12. They watched the 23-23 tie heading into the second half slip away to San Ramon. Timely stops, forcing turnovers and getting to the free throw line four separate times in the fourth quarter put the Patriots within striking distance of sending the game to overtime or leaving with a win. Inside the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter San Ramon Valley turned the ball over with a full-court pass that sailed over the heads of the Wolves point guard and Heritage’s Darius Walker, who was defending him. The Patriots inbounded the ball underneath their own basket. Senior Aidan Muse caught the ball at the top of the three-point line, guard Josiah Thomas came off a screen and called for Muse to pass the ball to him in the left corner, he was already in his shooting stance as the

ball hit his hands. The three-pointer fell, and the 12-point deficit was cut to three, making it a 62-59 game. The Patriots were forced to foul from there on out to stop the clock. San Ramon made their four free throws on their way to a 66-61 win. “I think the first half, we executed our

plays,” Thomas said. “We had a lot less turnovers than we normally do in games, which is good and I think we did good on being disciplined in that first half. That second half they pressed us and we got sped up a lot in the third quarter.” Thomas’ 12 points came in the fourth

quarter. With starter Jett Libiran injured and out for Monday’s game, Thomas knew heading into the match that his minutes would be extended and the responsibility of defending the Wolves’ best player would fall on him. “Before the game, coach told me I would have to guard their best player, so my main objective was to just play defense,” Thomas said. “I take it as it is, I don’t like getting nervous so I just try to do what I do.” Carter highlighted the Wolves’ discipline and how deep they go into their bench throughout a game. His group would have to match that discipline for as close to 32 minutes as they could. “I thought we were very disciplined offensively and defensively,” Carter said. “We ran our sets the way we were supposed to, that’s why we were scoring. They finished the fall season undefeated. The Earthquakes did not concede a goal throughout the the group stage, outscoring their three opponents a combined 9-0 in Group Q, including a 5-0 win over Brentwood’s own Revolution FC’s Revolution 15G Blue team on Sept. 14 in the group stage, as coaches Jose Santana and Adrian Bautista said that they leaned on a disciplined defense and consistent team play to secure the title. schedule is set — Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be the only two days his team has off in the following week. “Time off ?” Carter said. “Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday we’re at the Bambauer Classic at Marin Catholic. Wednesday is our day off but we might come in and shoot around, so time off ? No. I wish we could take a day off because we’ve been getting beat up, we’ve been playing hard and they’re exhausted. We have a lot of injuries, a couple of our starters are out and we’re hanging the best we can. But it’s opened up spots for other guys to get some minutes.”

County Public Works to perform delineator replacement work on Vasco Road The Contra Costa County Public Works Department will clean up debris, repair potholes and guardrails, and replace delineators to enhance safety on Vasco Road. Work will take place between Camino Diablo and the Alameda County line on Tuesday, Jan. 6, through Thursday, Jan. 8, barring unforeseen circumstances, the county said in a press release. The work will occur from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., weather permitting. The work will be scheduled to minimize impacts on commute traffic. Message boards will be posted to advise drivers of the scheduled work. A pilot car will be used to direct traffic through the work area. Drivers can expect delays of 20-30 minutes and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

First 5 Contra Costa gets grant to boost child passenger safety First 5 Contra Costa has received nearly $140,000 in new grants to improve child passenger safety for the county’s kids. The money will support the distribution of child safety seats, educational programs, and certified staff training to reduce injuries and fatalities among children aged birth-5 years old. Contra Costa County, home to 1.16 million residents, continues to face transportation safety problems, the agency said in a press release. Rapid population growth, high cost of living and limited housing affordability, and a large commuter population have all contributed to heavy traffic volumes across the region. As the amount of traffic increases, so do risks to young passengers. In 2023, the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System recorded 232 children younger than 8 who were injured as vehicle occupants, including four fatalities, underscoring the need for improved child passenger safety. “Every child deserves to be safe in the car,” said Dr Ruth Fernández, executive director at First 5 Contra Costa. “This grant strengthens our ability to reach families who face the greatest barriers, providing not only free car seats but also hands-on support and proper

car-seat education.” The program runs through September 2026 and aims to reduce trafficrelated deaths and injuries — especially among children younger than age 8 — by increasing proper use of child safety seats and reducing misuse. To achieve these goals, the grant will support training staff as certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, expanding outreach at community events, and providing free child safety seats paired with education on proper use. The funding will also support one-on-one car seat checkups ensuring that families receive individualized guidance on correct installation.

Recent state funding and legislation, coupled with a recently released fusion technology report from the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC), reinforce California’s dominance in this emerging technology, the state said in a press release. California’s fusion energy sector represents a transformative economic opportunity for the state. The new study by the San Diego Regional EDC finds that California is home to more than one-third of all U.S.-based fusion companies and has attracted $2.2 billion in cumulative public and private investment since tracking began in 2021. It also noted that the industry has the potential to grow to between $48 billion and $125 billion in economic impact, depending on scientific advancements and successful projects.

State seizes 58,358 illegal cannabis plants worth $57 million in November As California continues to crack down on the illicit cannabis market, Gov. Newsom announced three major enforcement operations conducted in November that eradicated 58,358 plants and seized about three tons of processed cannabis worth an estimated $56.5 million. Spearheaded by Newsom’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Task force, these major multiagency operations were led by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the California Department of Cannabis Control. The operations out of Alameda and Los Angeles counties targeted large-scale illegal cultivation sites, both outdoor and indoor, that posed significant risks to natural resources and surrounding neighborhoods. CDFW led two major multisite, multiagency operations coordinated through the task force from Nov. 18-20, targeting unlicensed cultivation sites on private land in Alameda and Los Angeles counties. With support from state, local and regulatory partners, CDFW went after a combined 52 unlicensed outdoor cultivation sites in the Lancaster area in northeast Los Angeles County. CDFW identified the targets and, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department, served 52 warrants at the sites. The operation resulted in the eradication of 32,738 plants and the destruction of 5,122 pounds of processed cannabis. Officers detained and cited 12 people and seized six firearms. They also documented 24 California Fish and Game Code violations and confiscated 12 grams of methamphetamine. Bottles labeled as containing carbofuran and methamidophos, pesticides banned in the United States because of health and

safety reasons, were found at multiple sites. Both can be highly toxic to fish and wildlife and their ecosystems and can contaminate soil and water resources.

California and The Trevor Project to launch suicide prevention training for 988 crisis counselors As President Trump attempts to restrict health care for LGBTQ youth, Gov. Newsom has announced the state’s partnership with The Trevor Project to further improve training for California’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline counselors to better support LGBTQ youth. More than 1,000 crisis counselors will be offered the new training beginning this month through March 2026, the governor’s office said in a press release. This effort is part of a statewide commitment Newsom announced earlier this year to support LGBTQ youth, who remain disproportionately affected by suicide risk and mental health challenges, he said. Starting last July, The Trevor Project conducted detailed surveys of leadership and crisis counselors at all 11 California 988 centers to build a tailored training plan that directly responds to the needs of the state’s crisis workforce. The training session is designed to improve understanding of LGBTQ identities, support needs, risk factors, and best practices for compassionate, effective crisis intervention. “The Trevor Project’s research found that 35% of LGBTQ youth living in California seriously considered suicide in the past year. To meet these young people where they are, it’s critical for crisis counselors to understand their identities, and the unique challenges they face,” said Mark Henson, Vice President of Advocacy & Government Affairs at The Trevor Project.

Antioch Antioch is the largest city in the far East Bay, with a population of approximately 115,000, according to City Manager Bessie M. Scott. City staff has SCOTT previously projected a roughly 25% increase in population over the next two decades to about 144,000. Scott was appointed in October of 2024 with a twoyear contract. Scott previously worked for the City of Seattle before relocating to Antioch. During discussion around her appointment, she highlighted key issues she intended to focus on during her tenure, including public safety and high employee turnover rates in City Hall. Scott’s annual salary, excluding benefits, is $263,880. She was also reimbursed $20,000 in moving expenses and has a “generous benefit package,” according to the recruitment agency the city used. Brentwood The city of Brentwood appointed its new city manager, Harold Duffey, as part of their Oct. 28 City Council meeting following the departure of DUFFEY former city manager Tim Ogden in April after five years in his role. Assistant City Manager Darin Gale served as interim

Duffey came to Brentwood after serving most recently as assistant city administrator in Oakland. Prior to that, he served as city manager in Compton and Grand Terrace. He was appointed by the city council in a unanimous decision. Duffey has an annual salary of $304,515, excluding benefits, to oversee a population of roughly 66,000 residents. The city expects the population to grow to 80,000 in the near future. Benefits for Duffey’s role include a cityissued cell phone, medical coverage and life insurance, as well as paid vacation and sick hours. Duffey is also permitted use of a city-owned vehicle. Discovery Bay Unlike other entries on this list, Discovery Bay is not an incorporated city. It is classified as a Community Service District. “A CommuBREITSTEIN nity Services District (CSD) is a governing body that can be formed by residents of an unincorporated area to ensure that basic service needs are met,” Discovery Bay’s website reads. “Some Community Services Districts provide water, sewer, police and fire services, garbage collection, recreation, landscaping, street lighting, mosquito abatement, graffiti abatement, library services and more. All services not handled by the CSD are managed by the County.” As a result, Discovery Bay does not have a city manager. Instead, the title of

General Manager is given to Dina Breitstein, whose role is similar to that of a city manager. The Town of Discovery Bay had a population of 15,243 in the 2023 census. She was appointed to the role for a five- year term beginning in 2021 but has worked in the town’s government since 2011. According to her contract, her annual salary is $158,500, not including benefits. Benefits for the role include use of a laptop and cell phone provided by the CSD, as well as sick and vacation hours and a monthly allowance for use of Breitstein’s personal vehicle for business purposes. The role also included medical coverage and life insurance. Oakley Joshua McMurray has been Oakley’s city manager since November of 2021. He was appointed to the role in a unanimous decision by the McMURRAY City Council after previously serving as interim city manager in May of that year, when City Manager Bryan Montgomery announced his departure for Southern California after serving more than 16 years in the role. McMurray had previously worked in various capacities in Oakley City Hall since 2008. During the Oct. 28 meeting of the City Council earlier this year, McMurray’s contract was amended. Among other changes, the contract was made evergreen, and will stand until either the city manager or the council wishes to terminate it rather than needing to be renewed every two years. McMurray’s annual salary is $311,772 to oversee a

population of roughly 45,000 with projections to grow to 70,000 in the coming years. Additional benefits for McMurray include the use of a work cell phone and computer, paid vacation leave and a medical plan. According to McMurray, Oakley has a “smaller executive staff ” compared to other cities in the area, meaning he has a more hands-on approach to city departments than other city managers. Pittsburg After serving as interim city manager for Brentwood prior to Duffey’s appointment, Gale was appointed as the new city manager GALE for Pittsburg beginning in mid-December. Pittsburg Mayor Jelani Killings said at the time of Gale’s appointment that Gale would lead efforts to help with the city council’s commitment to long-term projects to drive economic growth and enhance quality of life for residents. Gale’s contract stipulates an annual salary of $312,256, not including benefits, for his role. Benefits for the role include access to a work cell phone and computer as well as mileage reimbursement when using a personal vehicle for city-related business. Gale’s role also includes life insurance and a medical plan, as well as sick and vacation days. Pittsburg’s current population is roughly 76,000 but is expected to grow to 90,000 over the next two decades, according to city staff.
