Brentwood officer in fatal incident case still on active duty Police decision based on ‘factual circumstances’ By Jake Menez Staff Writer

Aaron Peachman — the officer involved in a Sept. 26 arrest that ultimately ended with Brentwood resident Yolanda Ramirez dead following a medical emergency in custody — is still on active duty, according to Interim Chief Walter O’Grodnick. “He is not on leave or reassigned given the totality of factual circumstances related to this matter,” O’Grodnick said on Nov. 18. O’Grodnick’s comment comes in the wake of public outcry at the Nov. 12 City Council meeting, during which

residents called for greater transparency, including clarity on whether or not Peachman was still on active duty. The case is under investigation by the County District Attorney’s Office as part of their fatal incident protocol. Ted Asregadoo, the public information officer for the District Attorney’s Office, said that the office can only confirm that the incident is under investigation but cannot provide further details. “Whenever an officer or civilian is shot or dies during an encounter with law enforcement in Contra Costa County, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office (CCCDAO), as well as every law enforcement agency in the county, follow a county protocol to investigate an incident,” according to

The seasonal skating rink had been in downtown Brentwood for the past seven years. The rink will open at 4:45 p.m., beginning with a performance by the San Francisco Ice Theatre. The city of Oakley agreed to a deal with Tom Gregory, who operated Brentwood on Ice, for a $30,000 partnership fee. In addition, the City of Oakley will cover PG&E and water costs, provide a dumpster for trash that will be emptied weekly, and will market the event with Oakley on Ice, according to Assistant City Manager Danielle Navarro. The funding for the incoming ice rink is budgeted by the city’s General Fund for fiscal year 2025-26, she said.

Kim Eyvonne Porter Ph.D., a local resident, has a new book out called “Rooted in Power: Discovering the Hidden Forces in Metaphysics.” Metaphysics is the unseen universal laws that move the universe and the people in it, she said. Porter is an applied meta physician, which means she has a Ph.D. in Metaphysics, and is a licensed marriage and family therapist. “This book, Rooted in Power, was birthed out of me teaching a class on Intro to Metaphysics,” Porter said. “I needed a text for my students that was really easy to understand and easy to read for people who have never been introduced to Metaphysics.” Porter started teaching 8th grade when she was 18 and progressed from there. She now teaches at National University and also teaches classes on the Circle App online. She began teaching metaphysics 2 to 3 years ago. “I wanted to write this book because there were people who were asking me questions about where can I find more information, and through my studies, through all of the work that I’ve done, I’ve realized that, un-

less your really into philosophy or psychology, some of this is really hard to understand for true beginners. So I wanted to bridge the creative bridge for true beginners to get into the work of metaphysics and creating a different reality for themselves,” Porter said. She said she incorporated 20 years worth of notes into her book, which was published in February. “The foundational principle is the power of belief,” Porter said. “Your belief shapes your reality, your belief shapes the things that you do. Your value system and beliefs

So there is immeasurable power in belief and once you understand and pay attention to the things that you believe then you can begin to change your life if you wanted to.” This is Porter’s third book. Her second title, “Food for the Soul: A Metaphysical Guide to Healing through Ancestral Wisdom and Vibrational Eating,” is meant for beginners. “I’m currently working on the followup to “Rooted in Power,’” Porter said. “It’s called “Infinite Pathways.” It takes this very

beginner text and then dives a little bit deeper, still in very user- friendly language, but it has a lot more practical tools on how to manipulate and change your life based on these universal principles of metaphysics.” She is anticipating an August 2026 release of “Infinite Pathways.” “Rooted in Power” is available anywhere books are sold nationwide. Porter said the response has been “amazing” and the book has 5-star reviews on Amazon. “We exceeded our sales without even trying,” she mentioned without disclosing figures. “Rooted in Power” was meant to be a textbook, but once she announced on TikTok to around 60,000 followers that she wrote a new book, it went like “wildfire,” she added. Her goal is to sell as many books as possible, as well as do a lecture at Oxford University one day. “When people think about metaphysics I’ve learned that they think it’s something that’s unattainable,” Porter said. “I want people to know that it is very accessible. It is something that already impacts your life and once you become aware of the way things impact your life then you will have the power to change it.” Porter can be found on TikTok and YouTube @Kimmchi60. East County residents Local food resources discuss how they will afford available for those in need their Thanksgiving dinner Cost increases this year have brought difficulties for some By Taylor Shepherd Correspondent

With price increases across the U.S. and SNAP benefits cut, East County residents have noticed these changes and are heading into the holiday festivities a little differently this year. Antioch resident Adrian Ramirez said he felt worried about the cost of Thanksgiving dinner. “For a lot of families food costs and living in general is just going to get worse as the year progresses and starting into next year.” Ramirez said the holiday costs will be more than last year. “I don’t see any prices going down. I have a dog, and the pet food has increased by at least $20.” He added that he has taken on more work to make the necessities more affordable. “I had to get a second job doing sign waving so I don’t have to live check to check, but I might even have to get a third job.” Brentwood resident Bri Zamorano said she also felt worried about the costs for the holiday as she has a young daughter. “I also go to school so I have to pay tuition every month now, so it is definitely going to be a little more challenging than usual.” Like Ramirez, Zamorano said Thanksgiving will cost more than last year. She added that she will try to budget and

eat out less by making more home-cooked meals to make the holiday preparations more affordable for herself and her daughter. Eliana Bedel of Brentwood found that the cost of everything went up ‘little by little.’ “I think that is why a lot of people haven’t noticed it yet. We are going to probably exclude some dishes from our menu.” Bedel added that everything is more expensive than last year, and she will have to try to find the best deals to make it more affordable. “I will have to browse around the grocery stores to see which one has the better price to offer.” Brentwood resident Oscar, who chose not to disclose his last name, wants to put the focus on ‘trying to have a nice day with the family.’ “I am concerned because the cost of living has risen and is affecting us in a very important way,” he said. Oscar added that he will only limit himself to what is necessary for the holiday this year. Bethel Island resident Sarah Gorham said Thanksgiving will be small this year with just her and her mom, and that she wants to ‘keep it simple.’ “Everybody who has been on food stamps recently has been struggling, so it’s going to be hard for everybody.” Gorham also said she will try to make more money by doing ‘side gigs’ such as Instacart and DoorDash to make Thanksgiving dinner more affordable. “This would be helpful to help pay for a few sides for your Thanksgiving dinner and a few small gifts for your family and friends.” see Thanksgiving page 6A

Brentwood prepares for 12th annual Turkey Trot 5K run/walk raises money for equipment for local schools By Jake Menez Staff Writer

Those looking to get in some exercise before enjoying a Thanksgiving feast this year still have time to do so while also helping raise money to support local students. Brentwood’s 12th annual Turkey Trot is slated to take place at the Streets of Brentwood on the morning of Nov. 27. The 5K run/walk (3.1 miles) will begin at the Streets of Brentwood, next to the AMC Theater, at 8 a.m., according to organizers. Race registration prices through Nov. 26 are $20 for ages 4 to 9, $25 for ages 10 to 18, and $40 for ages 19 and up. On race day, these prices will increase to $30, $35, and $55, respectively. Race day sign-ups will be available only if the event does not sell out before then. According to Dana Eaton, one of the organizers as well as the superintendent of Brentwood Union Elementary School District, this year’s event is anticipated to sell out. Participants can check in and get their race bibs and T-shirt at packet pick up, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 3-7 p.m. at Pioneer Elementary School at 2010 Shady Willow Lane in Brentwood.

The 12th annual Turkey Trot fundraiser for local schools will be held at the Streets of Brentwood on Thanksgiving morning. For those unable to attend in person, the event also offers a virtual option in which participants can run whenever and wherever they want starting on Monday, Nov. 24 through Sunday, Nov. 30. All participants will receive a 2025 race T-shirt and medal, according to the race website. Virtual racers will need to pick up their shirt, bib, and medal at packet pickup. Race officials are not able to ship out race swag, according to the website. Based on its history, the run is likely to host a few thousand runners and walkers. The 2023 event attracted roughly

2,300 participants and the 2024 event surpassed that with an estimated 2,400 attendees, according to organizer Jane Rodriguez. In addition to its large number of attendees, the 2024 run also raised about $80,000 for local schools, the largest single year sum for the event so far, organizers said. These funds are divided up among the schools in the Liberty Union High School District (LUHSD) and the Brentwood Union School District (BUSD). “The Turkey Trot is a cherished com-

munity tradition that brings families, students and local businesses together in support of our athletic programs,” LUHSD Superintendent Denise Rugani said. “With participation from local businesses and service clubs, all proceeds from the event directly benefit our student-athletes and sports programs.” The proceeds from the fundraiser go toward purchasing new equipment for physical education and sports, according to organizers. The Turkey Trot website shows off a number of projects that have been purchased with money raised from previous years, such as water refill stations at Freedom High School and soccer nets at Brentwood Elementary. “The Turkey Trot for schools has become a Brentwood community tradition that is beneficial in multiple ways,” Eaton said. “Our physical education teachers and sports teams have been able to add equipment and special programs that would absolutely not exist without the proceeds from the Turkey Trot.” Since the first Turkey Trot, which had 565 participants and raised $7,000, the Thanksgiving fundraiser has grown into “the largest race of its kind east of Mt. Diablo,” according to Phil Rodriguez, one of the event’s organizers. “It surpasses any other race I know of out here year after year. IMPORTANT MEDI-CAL UPDATE FOR SENIORS Long-term care is one of the most significant issues facing older adults, and many people are surprised to learn that Medicare does not cover custodial care — the type of daily assistance provided in nursing homes or through in-home caregivers. Without Medi-Cal, these costs can be overwhelming. The Reality of Long-Term Care Needs: Even those who have always been independent may eventually need support. A 67-year-old today can expect to live well into their 80s, making assistance more likely. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 70% of seniors will need help with daily activities, and over half will face long-term care expenses. The Cost of Care: Here in Brentwood, California, the median cost of a private nursing home room is nearly $188,000 per year in 2025. About 13% of residents require care for five years or longer. Unlike many who feel worried heading into the holiday, Antioch resident Stephanie Jackson has taken a different approach. She said she does not feel worried about the cost of Thanksgiving this year. “I prepared for it in advance,” Jackson said. “I started saving last year and put so much of my pay day into my bank. Then, at a certain time of the year like November or the beginning of December, they put it into your account. Supervisors approve allocation recommendations for ‘impact fund’

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Community Impact Fund allocation recommendations made by Supervisor Diane Burgis during the Nov. 18 meeting, following extensive community engagement. Because of efficient management of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) resources over the past four years, the Board has preserved a balance and has held these funds in the county reserve, Burgis’s office said in a press release. Earlier this year, a portion of these one-time funds were renamed Community Impact Funds to be individually distributed to each Supervisor district for future allocation based on that district’s needs. Burgis hosted community impact fund town halls meetings in Oakley, and one cohosted with District 5 Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston in Antioch. Using a workshop model, this method ensured residents across multiple communities told Supervisors about their priorities for local investments in direct grass-roots style discussions with Burgis and staff. Outreach efforts included: • 450 countywide community impact fund district 3 specific responses • Dozens of calls and meetings totaling more than 68 hours of District 3 engagement: including in-person meetings and feedback sessions with faith-based organizations, school superintendents, non-profits, and community leaders. • 160 attendees and individual participation • 500 unique comments identifying top community needs • 25 hours of feedback and processing; including analysis, review, and recommendation assessments As a result, the top community areas of concern and focus were brought forward by overwhelming majority: • Housing affordability and homelessness prevention • Public safety and emergency preparedness • Youth programs and educational support • Mental health and wellness services • Service access and equity “My focus while making these, and future recommendations for allocation, is to maximize the lasting impact of these funds by investing in projects that will support the greatest number of the most vulnerable individuals, for the longest period of time while we navigate through these uncertain times,” Burgis said. Krey is a long-time resident of Brentwood where he had a successful dental practice for 57 years. Krey was recognized for his commitment to Scouting, in which he was an Eagle Scout (1947) and recipient of the Silver Beaver award, the highest achievement as a Scout volunteer. In addition to his Scouting commitment, he served on the Brentwood Unified School Board for 35 years and was active with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with his wife, Beverly. Mariner is a long-time resident of Antioch. Mariner began volunteering

as a Scout leader in 2010, and like Krey, helped guide each of his sons, as well as many other youths, to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Mariner has worked for Wells Fargo for 44 years, and is active within his faith community serving as an usher at Most Holy Rosary parish and a member of Knights of Columbus. Mariner has volunteered with the food banks in Marin, San Francisco, Solano and Contra Costa counties. He credits his wife Grace with his success in Scouting as she volunteers alongside him. The event also served as a fundraiser for Scouting and raised about $13,000, which will go toward camping scholarships, facility improvements, equipment and leader training. Highway 4 pedestrian/bicycle overpass was required by law Editor: The bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Highway 4 in Brentwood was a requirement of the environmental impact report for the construction of the Highway 4 Bypass. The taxpayers had no choice but to construct this crossing if they wanted to construct the freeway. The Highway 4 Bypass Authority Board could have had the Mokelumne

Aqueduct Trail crossing either be in a concrete “tunnel” under the freeway or the bridge. Both of the other trail crossings, the Delta de Anza and the Marsh Creek Regional Trails, were accommodated with underpasses that had to be constructed anyway — one for the canal, and one for Marsh Creek. Heritage boys basketball erupts in opener Signals step forward after dominant win over Concord By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

Heritage boys basketball enters this season with something it hasn’t had in years — experience, and more specifically, experience within a system that now fits the roster. That continuity was on full display in Wednesday night’s season opener, as the Patriots rolled past Concord 77–23 in Brentwood. The win was Heritage’s first in a season opener since 2021 and stands as the largest opening-night victory in program history, according to MaxPreps. The 54-point margin of victory is their largest since they defeated Deer Valley by 59 points, 86-27, back on Jan. 10, 2025. Despite the margin, head coach Jeff Carter didn’t walk away satisfied. “A win’s a win,” Carter said. “Did we execute the way we wanted to? I’d say about 80 percent. But they did it — and that’s the most important thing.” Senior forward Aidan Muse led Heritage with 10 points on a night where scoring came from everywhere. Six Patriots finished with seven or more points, and 13 of the 15 players who saw the floor scored. Heritage controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to a 23–4 lead after the first quarter. The Patriots closed the final 6:30 of the quarter on a 19–2 run, turning an early 4–2 edge into a 33–6 separation. By the time the second quarter hit its midpoint, Heritage had stretched the

Much of that early separation came from Heritage’s half-court pressure, which repeatedly forced turnovers at midcourt and fueled a wave of transition buckets. “We wanted to get the blood boiling right out the gate,” Carter said. “For whatever reason, we’ve always been a slow-starting team, but today we jumped on it.”

Wednesday’s performance is the latest example of the program’s steady climb in Carter’s third year back at the helm. Heritage tied a program-low nine wins in 2023–24 but rebounded with 12 wins last season, including a road upset over Saint Mary’s in the North Coast Section playoffs. Now, with a roster that knows Carter — and his system — inside and out, the Patriots believe their ceiling is higher. And a return to the playoffs is now the expectation. “When I came back (in 2023), these guys were freshmen,” Carter said. “Now they’re seniors, and it’s great to have them back. They’re great kids — they play hard, they love each other and they play for one another. … The experience and familiarity with the system is huge. It makes practices easier because I’m not teaching as much. We’re just executing. They know what they’re doing. …They know what it takes.” “We’ve talked about the playoffs since the first day of practice. That’s the goal. We will accept nothing less – otherwise we’re not getting better.” The players echoed that theme. For them, the foundation is simple: chemistry. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is how important teamwork is,” Muse said. “It’s not a single-player game — it’s a team game — and the only thing we can do is improve.” “That’s how we’ll win those bigger games — by playing as a team,” senior guard Alvin Ella said. Ella scored seven points in the win. “Our chemistry is really good this year. Six of us have been with Coach Carter since freshman year, so playing together makes everything flow better.”

With the calendar turning towards the winter sports season, the Bay Valley Athletic League started announcing their AllBVAL awards for some of the fall sports teams this week – flag football, girls volleyball, and boys water polo. Both Liberty’s and Heritage’s girls volleyball and flag football teams took home numerous All-BVAL awards, while Liberty’s boys water polo team had four players take first-team honors along with one of the Lions earning the league’s most valuable player award. The awards are as follows: Flag Football: • Most Valuable Player: Lola Acosta, Senior - Liberty • Offensive Player of the Year: Elenoa Malu, Sophomore - Liberty • Defensive Player of the Year: Reilly Smith, Senior - Heritage The three-time defending BVAL champion Liberty Lions once again dominate the All-BVAL awards with 10 earning all-league awards including Lola Acosta being named league MVP and sophomore quarterback Elenoa Malu earning the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award. Freshman Chloe Wortinger earned her first All-BVAL firstteam honor in her debut season. Heritage, however, wasn’t far behind the Lions this year, both in awards and in the record, as eight Patriots total took home

Junior running back Payton Ladrido was named first-team All-BVAL after racking 1,562 total yards with 24 total touchdowns in 2025. Freshman quarterback Lily Brakel earned her first first-team all-BVAL honor in her debut season after throwing for 2,514 yards and 41 touchdowns. Seniors Lily Wilright, Riley Bayot, and Jaycelyn Luna round out the first-team honors for the Patriots. The Freedom Falcons also had six total named All-BVAL with La’Riyah Peterson, Destiny Murphy, and Camarah Kittles earning first-team honors. Volleyball: • Most Valuable Player: Camy De La Chevrotiere, Senior - Heritage

Heritage senior setter Camy De La Chevrotiere takes home league MVP honors after guiding the Patriots to their best season in school history and the girls volleyball program to not just their sixth-straight BVAL league title (12th overall), but also the program’s first North Coast Section championship and their first home CIF State playoff match. De La Chevrotiere finished the season seventh in the entire NCS in assists (604), and was second in NCS Division 1 in digs with 218 behind teammate Gigi Ramones-Quesada (274). De La Chevrotiere also led the Patriots in service aces this season with 52. De La Chevrotiere is one of six to be named All-BVAL with Ramones-Quesada, Jaelyn Kinnaird, Jamie Hsieh, and Sofia

Krepp rounding out the first team honors. Liberty and Freedom both had five take home all-league honors this season. Lady Lions’ seniors Liberty Boyd and Sienna Ahlrich took home first team awards along with junior Yazmen Calhoun. For the Falcons, Jaliyah Merellas was named first-team All-BVAL in her senior season, with juniors Sam Ochoa and Lauren Morgan rounding out the first team for Freedom. Boys Water Polo: • Most Valuable Player: Jack Lorenz, Senior - Liberty Liberty senior goalkeeper Jack Lorenz helped guide the Lions to their thirdstraight BVAL league title in 2025, despite the Lions falling in the playoffs, 11-9, to Archie Williams in the opening round of the NCS playoffs on Nov. 6. Lorenz leds a Lions group that had six named all-league, all seniors – Joel Ray, Alex Silva, Zach Pierce, and Hunter Vasarhely were named first-team with Hayden Young earning honorable mention. Heritage was right behind them with four total all-league awards as their senior core of Lazar Cubaleski, Will Zodikoff, and Aidan Muse took first-team recognition, while junior Kaleb Culpepper was named honorable mention. Freedom seniors Adrian Alcayaha and Christopher Rule were named first team All-BVAL with Jamison Cheney earning honorable mention.

Winning mindset, culture boost Liberty girls water polo

The Liberty varsity girls water polo team celebrated their third league championship win over rival Heritage High School on Saturday, Nov. 1. The championship win was difficult because Heritage is well coached and with all three championships coming with victories over Heritage, according to head coach Jack Doria. “It is always a goal to win a league championship and to get to the NCS championship tournament,” Doria said. “You cannot predict how the pressure of playing a rivalry game for a championship will affect the game. We always expect tough games against them and this was no exception.” Liberty opened the game scoring four goals in the first three and a half minutes, leading 6-2 at the end of the first quarter, and then extended their lead to 9-3 at halftime, Doria said. After opening the second half with a goal to increase the lead to 10-3, Heritage then scored five of the next six goals. Liberty then scored again to close the third quarter with a 12-8 lead. But in the fourth quarter, Liberty outscored Heritage 7-3 in the fourth quarter for a 19-11 win. Doria said during the quarter break, they took time to reset their minds on their team goals and game plan, which he said shifted the momentum. But he acknowledged that Heritage made some good adjustments at halftime that had Liberty on their heels to cut the score to within three. “This championship was particularly gratifying because of some program-level changes we implemented this year regarding our team culture that had an enormous impact,” Doria said. “This truly was a full team effort across the board.”

Team benefited from workshops this season The Liberty varsity girls water polo team celebrated their third league championship win over rival Heritage High School this season, but head coach Jack Doria said part of the team’s victory and outstanding individual performances were the result of a winning mindset and hard work after a series of workshops. Freshman Sienna Rigoni led the team in every offensive category. Sophomore Quinn Pierce and freshman Erin Ayers, known for their outside shots, put up solid numbers while also playing center defense, which is typically responsible for guarding the opponent’s best player. Goalie Jordan Hornnes also bailed the team out numerous times, and according to Doria, has become one of the more aggressive goalies around. Senior Gracie Power is credited for possibly being the most-improved player on the team and for her leadership, while Doria said Vivian Esmond has developed into a quality center while earning some critical ejections that put Liberty in good scoring positions.

The law enforcement agency involved in the incident also sends criminal investigators to the scene following a fatal incident, with each agency conducting its own independent investigation. As part of these investigations, witnesses may be interviewed, evidence may be collected and analyzed at the county crime lab, and any other relevant investigative work necessary to complete the criminal investigation is conducted, the District Attorney’s Office said. The Pittsburg City Council voted unanimously to appoint Darin Gale as City Manager during a regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 17. “We are excited to announce the appointment of Darin Gale as Pittsburg’s next City Manager,” Mayor Jelani Killings said. “His extensive experience in executive leadership, economic development, community partnerships, and municipal operations will be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow and position our city for long-term success. We’re confident he will make a positive impact, and we look forward to welcoming him to Team Pittsburg.” Gale brings 16 years of experience in local government and management. With much of his career focused in Northern California, he has served with increasing responsibility, including in his current role as Interim City Manager for the City of Brentwood. “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as Pittsburg’s next City Manager,” Gale said. “Pittsburg is a city with a rich history, and an exciting future ahead. I look forward to partnering with the City Council, talented city staff, local businesses, and community members to build on the great work already underway. But over the long process of development, the plan was changed, replacing six of the lots with a stormwater detention basin that would keep the water on site and let it seep back into the underground aquifer, in line with changes in the construction and usage of stormwater infrastructure.. The developers will retain the option of replacing the basin with other types of stormwater infrastructure in the future and placing houses on its former site. The Bridgehead properties – 6001, 6113, and 6115 Bridgehead Road–are currently occupied by local businesses, though in the case of 6115, the owner is attempting to attract renters to the property. 6001 is the site of GM Marble and Granite, and 6113 is home to LUMA Builders, who are facing enforcement action from the city due to a conflict between their business type and the parcel’s zoning. The owners of the three properties jointly presented a proposal to redesignate the Bridgehead parcel from business park to light industrial in the General Plan, which would allow LUMA Builders to operate in their current space and the owner of 6115 to rent out the buildings on his property. According to the owner of 6115, at least 15 prior potential renters had been denied due to their businesses not being allowed within business park-designated areas. The owners also said that the change would

Tips to keep your child and pets safe from Christmas tree dangers this holiday season

family has fun decorating it and your kids anticipate the big day when presents finally appear beneath it. However, putting a large tree in the middle of your home can bring potential danger to both your kids and pets. These tips from local experts can help you prepare in case of any mishaps. Tips if you have children Dr. Richard D. Singer of Sutter Health in Brentwood says the most common hazards a Christmas tree can have on a child are allergies and electrocutions. Singer said to look out for these common symptoms indicating an allergic reaction from a natural tree: “coughing, wheezing, face swelling, hives. Allergies can develop as young as 1 to 2 years of age. It’ s a good idea to keep a bottle of Benadryl at home in case your child has an allergic reaction.” To prevent potential electrocutions caused by the tree lights, Singer suggests

Tips for your pets Dogs and cats are known for their curiosity, but Dr. Austin Ojala of Ojala Family Pet Care in Oakley warns that those characteristics could be harmful if left unmonitored with a

Tinsel is a common decoration that brings some shine to a tree, but that same shine is attractive to cats and dogs who like to eat attractive things. “It becomes like a foreign body risk. It gets stuck in one of the curvatures of the intestine in the stomach and that causes an obstruction,” Ojala warns. Your pet may be experiencing an obstruction if they are vomiting, bloating, or have

a visibly tense abdomen in which case Ojala suggests taking them to a veterinarian. Ornaments are a staple of any Christmas tree, but they can be a hazard for a dog with a big mouth that likes to chew on random objects. Ojala said that an ornament can shatter when ingested. “Obviously (ornaments) are made of glass or plastic. They can bring cuts to the internals of the mouth or along the G.I. system.” Ojala warns that cats specifically have an affection for chewing on cables, which could cause electrocutions. To stop dogs from swallowing ornaments and cats from chewing on cables Ojala suggests getting “a no-chew spray that you can spray on specific items like electrical cords and some ornaments. That can often get dogs and cats to stay away from it. Sometimes you have to set up a baby gate around your tree. iving Tuesday is Dec. 2 this year. It is an opportunity for residents to support the

nonprofits that help make the local community better. The annual event always takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Giving Tuesday is a global initiative that focuses on “radical generosity,” according to the website for the organization behind it. They define the concept as the belief that an act of generosity is “a worthy act in and of itself.” To this end, one of the driving factors of Giving Tuesday is donating to local nonprofits to help them continue their stated missions. “Our global network collaborates yearround to inspire generosity around the world, with a common mission to build a world where generosity is part of everyday life,” the Giving Tuesday website reads. “Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.” Earlier this month, The Press asked local nonprofits participating in Giving Tuesday to reach out to help compile a list, allowing readers to know who needed their support.
