SCHEDULE OF CLASSES

LIBERTY ADULT EDUCATION

Portraits of Success Staci Faletti I was very hesitant about starting the FOCUS program. I was raised here in the Bay Area. In December of 2017, I lost my job of 15 years and I lost the house my kids had grown up in for 7 years. I didn’t think I was ever going to get a new house or find a new job. Being on CalWorks and CalFresh, you are signed up for Job Club and Job Search through the Welfare-to-Work program. If you don’t get a job by the end of the 4 weeks you get referred to a class called FOCUS that is taught at Liberty Adult Education. FOCUS is an awesome class. Sheri Carey is an awesome teacher and she got me focused on what I wanted in order to get the most out of this class. With that said, I received 5 Certificates in Microsoft Office programs. I also received the Certificate of Completion for the 6 week FOCUS class. I also received 2 job offers, bought a new car, and a new house for my kids and me. I really enjoyed my time here and learned a lot of new skills that will help me in my future careers! Donna Van Schaik When I started attending Liberty Adult Education, I was full of doubt and worry, and not sure if I was able to complete the two computer programs I registered for. With each completed assignment I felt better about myself. When I finished those two classes, I took two more, as I passed each class, my confidence grew. I took enough classes to earn my Microsoft Office Business Suite Certificate. With my new found skills I broke out of my shell. I have so much more confidence, skills, and self-worth. I can hold my head up high knowing I have the skills to acquire a better job with the new skills I have. When I was considering registering for classes, a little voice told me, even if it is scary, do it, do something to better yourself. I’ve done that and so much more. Thank you to the staff at Liberty Adult Education. Miriantonieta Castro My husband, Carlos Luis Nino, and I came to the United States in August of 2017. We endured an economic, social, and political crisis for over 15 years in Venezuela. Our daughters, who have been living in the U.S. for several years and married to U.S. citizens, insisted that we should come to live in America. We heard about Liberty Adult Education and we started the English as a Second Language (ESL) course. Our teacher, Tara Randall, has been encouraging us to progress in the development of our English skills to adapt to American society and be better prepared to work. Our goals are to continue improving our abilities in English because we need those abilities to succeed in any workplace. We would also like to improve our abilities by taking LAE computer courses and How to Start a Small Home Business. We are very grateful to all the staff at LAE for being so nice in helping us with our education, especially our teacher Tara and aide Jose Luis, because they have been doing a very GOOD JOB!

2

Claire Murray You can do anything if you just set your mind to it. Nothing can stand in your way as long as YOU believe in yourself and your abilities. I have been confined to a wheelchair for the last 10 years. I was able to go to community college and graduate with my Associates Degree, but I never knew what I wanted to study. I didn’t know what my calling was. Earlier this year, I was referred to Liberty Adult Education and I enrolled in the Medical Receptionist Program that they offer. I found my calling through this program. Before, I didn’t know if I would ever be able to work because of my disability. Now I know that I am just as capable as anyone else because I have been given the skills and knowledge necessary to be efficient in any place that I work. Liberty Adult Education is the perfect place to go to jump-start your life. Find something you love, and the teaching staff will give you the tools necessary to fuel that passion.

*If the course is marked as a college level course it will be awarded college credit by Los Medanos College through a process known as “course-to-course articulation” or “credit by exam”. Students who received an “A” or “B” on the final exam, will be eligible to claim the FREE college credit. If student’s score is lower than a “B”, the class will be treated as though it were a regular high school/adult ed course. Community college classes would normally cost approximately $138 for a 3 unit class. In order to receive college credit, students will fill out an online California Community College (LMC) application and also will register with CATEMA for instructors to recommend the student for credit at the end of the course. Students will have a college transcript as the result of being awarded college credit.

What? My class is cancelled?

We hate to do it, but if too many people wait until the last minute to register, we have no choice. Please Register Early to avoid disappointment for yourself and others.

Joshua Smith: Learning is the most important skill in my opinion. Every day we learn something new, and I have been learning for the past 18 years. Liberty Adult Education has expanded my learning horizon in an unbelievable amount of time. I feel I’m able to push the boundaries of my knowledge to the limit. With the GED course, I’m able to understand the value of the course and advance in my future. My family was very proud of me when I decided to follow up on my education, so much that I decided to take another course called Medical Interpretation on Wednesday evenings. Being a part of Liberty Adult Education is an absolute life changer, and there is a career center to help students look for jobs. I found my first job with the support and help I received from them and I was so prepared for that first interview. It felt like talking to an old friend. I have accomplished a lot with Liberty Adult Education and I want to do so much more with them. And hopefully soon I will pass my GED with them.

PORTRAITS OF SUCCESS

Marquinita Terry: I was enrolled in the CTE Program. By the end of this chapter of my journey, I actually completed three of the four programs. LAE allowed me to be able to learn new skills and unlock a talent for something I never knew before. For anyone who’s considering a career in the medical field, I would recommend LAE as a way to get hands on experience to achieve this goal. The teachers that I had the pleasure to work with were a great help to me in accomplishing completion of my tasks. Math was particularly an issue for me because it has never been my best subject. I had been suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both hands and meeting the typing requirement was also quite a challenge. I was taking tests on the day of the ceremony because I wanted to get my certificate that day. I’m proud of my accomplishments!

Jessica Runnels: I came to LAE with the mindset that I would just be adding a better understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and found the determined person I once was. After having a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), I never thought I could accomplish a four to six hour “work” day. LAE gave me that confidence and helped me to strive to complete the Advanced Microsoft Office Specialist Certificate Program. The hardest part of this program was getting my typing speed up to 40 wpm. The teachers and students were so encouraging and confident that I could accomplish this goal. Alana, Pam, Fina, and Cheryl continued to push and mold me to make me the best person I can be. I would recommend LAE to everyone for any class they’d like to take. There is a wide range of classes from Medical, Business, to personal growth classes. The teachers want to see you succeed and are willing to help in any way possible. LAE will mold you and give you the confidence to achieve your goals. Roberta Hunter: I previously attended LAE in 2013 after my job of 25 years relocated out of state and I received my Administrative Assistants Certificate. After the program, I was blessed to get a job with one of the top Health Care providers. After 4 years as a clerk, I realized that in order to grow I needed to have the knowledge of Medical Terminology. My biggest concern was at the age of 60 could I be successful if I took the course. I tried online instruction but was immediately lost. I thought about the great instruction and encouragement that I had previously received at LAE, I emailed Debbie and enrolled with Cheryl who is an amazing instructor. I commuted again from Livermore to Brentwood (approx. 50 miles roundtrip) for 5 weeks and can honestly say that this has been a wonderful blessing. I am so excited about the new opportunities that having my Medical Terminology certificate will bring. Thank you Debbie, Cheryl and your wonderful staff, I so appreciate you all! Lorenzo Salazar: Having a work life and deciding to finish my HS diploma at the age of 26 felt like it was impossible. Thankfully, Liberty Adult Education high school program made the impossible seem possible by offering classes I was able to attend after work. In a few weeks I finished the program and received my HS diploma and it felt great. This opened a lot of new doors for me to be able to apply for new jobs and motivated me to take advantage of their other programs. I would highly recommend LAE to anyone in doubt of returning back to school. It really is never too late, trust me!
