Notre Dame High School Canticle 1984

SENIORS

Each year, the class of 1984 has acquired a little more sparkle. Over the past four years, we've grown closer together, from inexperienced freshmen, to worldly seniors. As we began our last year, we were determined to enjoy ourselves, and to go out winners. Every event we encountered was a great success. Barefoot in the Park, the breakfast, Homecoming, the Florida trip, and the Prom will all be remembered fondly. As graduation finally approached, we congratulated ourselves for our accomplishments, and prepared to overcome future obstacles. The class of '84: truly a class of champions.

In September we began our fourth year at Notre Dame The novelty of High School had by now been replaced by the confidence that comes with experience. Though the school itself had changed very little in three years this year promised to be different , and somehow better than the previous three.

The "Barefoot in the Park" dance was the first exclusively senior eventwe could see that the senior social life would need little encouragement. The success of Blue and White Day and the senior pancake breakfast were true demonstrations of the upperclassmen 's spirit and industry. In late October we danced in drag at the Halloween Party and on a rainy day in November , we crowned joe and Leslie Homecoming King and Queen The senior class was well represented at, the Christmas Cotillion as we celebrated the Holiday Season in style.

Far to the north , a group of hardy seniors (and underclassmen) gathered in Bolton Valley to test their skill on the slopes, and to frolic in the frozen tundra March was the month of our great escape vacation to Florida For five days , we basked in the sunny southern sunshine and enjoyed the various amusements of Disneyland. On an evening early in May, we dressed in black ties and evening gowns to attend the senior prom; a celebration that was to be the fmal formal social event before our Baccalaureate

The Tradition

When my friend and I frist arrived at Notre Dame on October 22, the school appeared to be quiet and dark. I thought that I caught the glimpse of a Dracula fleeing through the doors. I knew that I must be spooked and that my imagination was ru:1ning away with me. But at that moment I wished that I could run away with it. My friend decided to investigate the situation just to calm my nerves.

When we got to the door we found it unlocked. We held our breath as the door creaked open into a desolated entranceway. I was ready to turn back until my friend heard music. What a time to be hearing things! She started dragging me into the cafeteria. The music got louder and louder. Different forms started to appear in front of us. We thought that we saw E.T., Playboy Bunnies, Crayons, Wind-up Dolls, an elf, and all sorts of other creatures and they all appeared to be dancing! My heart started pounding harder and harder as we approached one of these creatures to ask where the nearest exit was. How embarrassed we were to find out that this unknown in front of us was one of our classmates and that this was the Senior Halloween Party!

The heated competition during this party was gruesome. Every costume was cleverly done. Even the judges looked as if they had a hard time choosing the winners. Pac-Man (Jim Murray, Anthony Tezsla, Greg Schiavone, and Bob Stemmer) ran away, or shall we say hopped away with being the funniest. An eatable looking Sandwich (June Perrone, Anastasia Serpikov, Leslie Colacello, Lucy Hutcherson, Kathleen Moschera, Liz Delmonte, Lorraine Genovesi, and Kim Perry) were the best group. A pair of pumpkins (John Sheehan and Dot Kurpiewski) won the best couple. Combat (Rich Stec) was the ugliest and Baby Hughes (Russell Totaro) was the most original. That night will always be remembered by the Seniors, as they all had a ghostly good time.

UNDERCLASSMEN

Three distinct groups can be identified for the underclassmen at N .D . as they wind their way down that golden road to becoming seniors.

First, one sees those that may get lost or thoroughly confused as they run to classes, trying to "beat the bell. " These are the freshmen who, while searching for their own niche in the Notre Dame Family make new friends and finally find comfort in the school and their classmates.

Secondly, there are the sophomores; those who know their way round and are no longer confused themselves, but rather help to further confuse the freshmen. They are no longer the " rookies," and they enjoy making that known as they show their superiority over those taking their place.

The third group one sees is composed of those who no longer worry about those younger than themselves, nor about finding new friends. These are the juniors who care more about proms, class rings, and their reign as seniors.

Three categories, three distinct personalities: the underclassmen playa major role in sustaining the Notre Dame commitment.

Junior year is a time of great transition. The class of 1985 has grown from quite silly sophomores to very jolly juniors. This growth was uneven at times. We experienced difficult and annoying moments, which dampened boisterous spirits, but only for a short while, and juniors bounced back better than ever.

The junior class shouted themselves hoarse on Blue and White and Spirit Days. Things looked pretty shady for a day as 350 juniors paraded in hats and sunglasses on their spirit day throughout the halls of N.D.

Ring Day was held December 7th. The ceremony gave us the treasured opportunity to rejoice with one another as many of us received class rings. The distribution of rings marked a special time as the jewelry proclaimed that N.D. belonged to us as much as we belonged to Notre Dame.

The biggest social event of Junior year was the Prom. Held at Angeloni's on May 18th, the junior prom provided a pleasant surprise for all who attended. The transformation from students to Cinderellas and Prince Charmings gave a fairy tale-like quality to the formal affair.

We, the class of 1985, hold much promise for ourselves, Notre Dame and the future. We welcome our final year with apprehension and great joy.

Quarter-Finals

Sophomore definition: "the wise fool," no longer freshmen and still not upperclassmen. Sophomore year has been known as the quiet, in-between year. The sophs go through every day quietly and unnoticed. However, this year we were out to change that image. The class of '86 was tired of the old stereotype. We were out for recognition

It began with the Sophomore/Freshmen picnic. Here we established ourselves as a class to be reckoned with. Next came Blue and White Day: we showed our enthusiasm by decorating our homerooms lavishly, with themes ranging from casinos to Toga Parties.

We celebrated Sophomore Spirit day with a "a touch of class with clash." On school spirit day, it was the Sophomores who dared to be different Stripes!

Yes this is and will forever reign as the best Sophomore Class in Notre Dame history.

I guess you could refer to it as " just another freshman year at Notre Dame ," but to the class of '87 it was something more than that.

Entering the school on that very first day early in September sparked different feelings of ,excitement and fear as we looked forward to the coming year and walked into a new stage of our lives.

The freshman/sophomore picnic was an opportunity for us to get to see all the members of our class, and get to know them other than the way they were in class It also gave us a chance to see the sophomores and try to imagine how they felt when they were in our places.

Spirit days psyched us all as we worked together as a class to show the " rest" of the school what freshmen can really do. We demonstrated that on the first Spirit Day when we came in first in the events. Winning isn't everything but it sure felt good when the " freshmen" (arfl) beat the other classes, including the seniors!

And wouldn't it be just perfect for us to get the backwards theme this past Spirit Day. It probably confirmed all beliefs about freshmen being backwards and mixed-up.

The year is half gone and we ' re looking forward to our sophomore year. Naturally, it will be the best ever!

When students leave Notre Dame after their senior year, they take with them a precious educational background. Our Vocation

Notre Dame, recognizing the needs of an increasingly technological society, has continued to improve and expand its business department. Typing, Stenography, Accounting, Word Processing and Careers Planning are offered throughout the four year curriculum. The school has kept pace filling the needs of an ever changing business community.

Other students choose the path of Vocational Training. Here they prepare for a host of specialized, technical occupations. Their day is divided between the academic classroom and the technical workplace.

At Notre Dame physical education is not just volleyball and president 's physical fitness anymore It is also aerobics, floor hockey , soccer and much more Along with our regular gym classes , we are taught the essentials of good health, driver's education and first aid. Anyone can see that the programs at N D. have and will turn out well rounded young men and women. Many thanks must be given to the dedicated gym teachers whom Notre Dame has acquired through the years These teachers help students to excel in athletics.

Physical education and our school nurse go hand in hand She enables us to perform at our peak by making sure everyone 's healthy. As students at Notre Dame , we have two words when leaving : Thank you.

Math at Notre Dame has grown from elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus to include computer programming in BASIC. Freshmen study algebra with or without the added "spice" of trigonometry, and seniors (the brave - or foolish - ones), calculus. This sequence of courses will provide students with a sound basis for further math study in college.

Computer programming this year was open only to seniors. It provided an introduction to computers and programming, an area that some students may need to be familiar with in college. Computer programming can be just as complicated as the more traditional math courses, as those students who spent many lunch periods and after school hours "de-bugging" a program can attest!

The religion department, under the guidance of Mrs. Mary Ivins , has continued to grow, both in direction and in spirit From Old Testament readings, to modern problems of marriage and commitment, the department encourages its students to reflect on their values and priorities It is this added dimension which lies at the core of Notre Dame ' s success.

Liter ar y Ideals

The English Department opens to students worlds of ideas that seem to be far removed from their everyday experiences. Closer examination of the cultures and philosophies, however, reveals that they are really not so esoteric after all! After becoming familiar with these ideas, through study and experimentation, students should begin to be able to relate them to their own lives (an experience that will be repeated in college and throughout their lives).

Through the study of English composition, and American, British, and World Literature, students are encouraged to discipline their minds to see both sides of every situation. When students are able to effectively argue both sides of a conflict, the teachers in the English Department feel they have done their jobs.

A mandatory inclusion in any high school curriculum is the study of a foreign language. Perhaps no other discipline is as capable of transporting a student beyond his own frame of reference and into the mores and beliefs of other peoples. Notre Dame 's department offers a glimpse into the language and culture of France , Spain, Germany and even ancient Rome.

In addition to the study of foreign language, any educated person must include a thorough knowledge of his own heritage. Notre Dame 's History department , with its concentration on American history , enables students to develop a finer appreciation of their national heritage.

Lingual Connections

Notre Dame places a strong emphasis on its arts curriculum. Students are able, through a carefully structured program, to spend four years exploring their own capacities for artistic growth. In four years of Art Instruction , in Graphics, in Acting and Musical Comedy , students are encouraged to develop an appreciation for diverse artistic accomplishment This is another of many unique facets of the Notre Dame Community.

One of Notre Dame 's greatest assets is its Music and Theatre Department. There is a wide variety of courses offered in these areas. They include choir , Music Theory, Music Fundamentals, Band, Musical Comedy and Acting. The in-school courses branch out and provide an abundance of extra-curricular activities such as Night Choir , after-school Acting, Jazz Choir, Jazz , Marching Band and Color Guard.

The end result of much hard work by the teachers and students provides activities and productions that add culture, entertainment and enjoyment to the school's atmosphere Some of these activities include the Annual Spring Musical, the Evening of Theatrics , the Band and Choral Concerts and the Marching Band and Color Guard 's participat ion in the football season and competition.

Our Growth

is usually a busy place. Counsellors rush puter to the secretary and back into their students browse through thick college their foreheads creased in concentration. It's a place of decisions; what courses to take next year, what to major in, what college to apply to. Many students come here to find the answers to those questions. But guidance is also a place to bring personal problems, and the counsellors are always willing to lend a sympathetic ear. It's a busy place because it is an important one.

Another important place is the library. Frequently it is a quiet place, with a few students scanning the newspapers and bookshelves. Sometimes, however, the doors will swing open and a class will sweep in to look for resources. Then the librarians spring action patrolling around tables and shelves, attempting to control the sudden increase in volume and to return materials.

The library has proved its value as a source of information to anyone who has ever written a term paper and found the needed resources from among the books here. Diedre Sheehan

With Gratitude

As freshmen we couldn 't find our lockers until midterms, and all of our energy was exhausted carrying a whole day's worth of books. We tried to fend off the intimidations created by the presence of the upperclassmen, but we secretly searched for serenity, a smile of reassurance, a kind of confidence

Sophomore year brought a test of our individuality, an awareness of others, the exchange of giggles and laughter with new friends, and for most of us - Typing I. We still rushed to beat the e 1, but with considerably less because we felt a little more serene, reassured and confident.

We blinked and found ourselves Juniors. hers became allies; we turned our rings and went to the prom. We starte driving which opened our eyes to the financ ial responsibilties of life, and he need for a job. We were fortunate enough 1:0 have access to the Job Placement program which, under Mrs. Gribbins' excellent direction, helped us find that needed position. The bell became less noticeable, and we had an eaSli r time keeping track of our books. We had found a source of serenity, reass rance, and confidence.

As Seniors, we have witnessed you spr ading your concern and thoughtfulness throughout the Notre Dame C mmunity. Your dedication and enthusisam were evident t hroughoul yOur term as a member of the faculty board of the Bishop Ahr National Honor Society.

During the time you served as chairperson of the business department, you displayed both creativity and energy. These qualities commanded the respect and admiration of faculty and students. You are still highly visible in your role as the Director of Job Placement and as Moderator of the BusiBusiness Bulletin.

You have always been a behind-the-scenes worker, but your spirit of cooperation and friendliness has brought you well deserved recognition.

Although you no longer teach Typing I, we still benefit from the efficiency and professionalism you demonstrate in teaching Steno II, Executive Secretarial , and Co-Op Classes. Here at Notre Dame, a wide variety of clubs is offered; from the Computer club to the Ski club and from Honor Societies and Koenonia, there is an activity to fill any interest. Through involvement in these clubs, we can learn more about ourselves, but we also develop a heightened awareness of others. Activities give us a chance to reach out and join in the unit of the Notre Dame Family.

A LIFE IN WALES

Sut ydych chi heddui!! No , I am not tongue-tied. I just asked you how you are today. I decided that it would be fun to share with you some of my experiences while I was living in Wales. I moved to Wales when I was about eleven years old. To help you imagine what Wales is like , I want to describe the countryside , the towns and school-life

There are mountains everywhere , with their peaks scraping the sky-line , some are even snow covered. Sheep and horses roam wild and free along side roads , gardens and by the mountain side. It is roo vast an area , and too expensive for the farmers to worry about fences. Fern and heather are commonly found scattered here and there.

Welsh people are deeply religious - their belief lies with the Church of England that is closely related to the Methodist or Protestant Church. The people are of a private kind. They tend not to socialize with neighbors and almost seem to resent foreigners which we , as English, were considered The Welsh have a reputation for their fine voices and choirs. It is a wonderful feeling to be at a rugby game and have all the men and women sing in deep diapasons ; to hear their voices ring across the mountainsides and form in the valley is a beautiful sound.

My greatest experience was the fact that in Wales , I was taught in Welsh; not all the time, just enough to have some fights Welsh is not any ordinary language to overcome. It has the addition of wand to our a, e, i, o. u, vowels and the subtraction of j, k, q, v, x, and z It took me quite a while before I could understand what was even being said, and also what I was sup-

\ posedly saying I remember the Welsh -I looked down at it and prayed -I ended up with a C so I guess I was not too bad.

A typical school day would begin at 9 o ' clock. At th is time we would either go to class or we went to an assembly about twice a week. There, Welsh hymns were sung , prayers were spoken, and speeches given. We had Welsh to stand the whole time as a sign of honor. When we had been dismissed we filed out into our classes. Over a one week 's period we had a variety of classes - languages played an important part in our education. Welsh, English, and German were taken everyday , while French was taken three times a week and Latin once . After the first three classes we would have a 15 minute break ; then, another two classes followed by lunch. After lunch we had three more classes. Four o 'clock ended the school day. Between the ages of twelve and sixteen , pupils would study a variety of subjects: languages, art, biology , chemistry, physics and home economics. At the age of sixteen , you could either leave school officially or take 'C' levels These were five or six exams taken to prepare for higher education

The public schools of Wales were as comprehensive as the private schools of America. Discipline , however , remains a strong factor in Welsh schools. Holding the door open for teachers, and rising in recognition of authority symbolized humility and respect Smoking, cheating or swear ing were cause enough for punishment with the cane -a wooden st ick across the backside However, this helped the individual to be aware of self-respect and self-discipline.

I will always remember my time in Wales for in the end I loved the freedom of the mountains , the dignity and individuality of the people , and the special beauty of the valle ys All in all it was a beautiful experience

Susan Kulak's name is well known. In addition to her role as a good student, she is also Miss New Jersey State Twirler. She has only been twirling competitively for three years, but her hard work has resulted in over 400 trophies, 150 medals, and 3 Eastern titles. She has performed across the United States, appeard on network television and has helped Jerry Lewis in his telethon.

In school, Susan displays her talent as featured twirler in the Notre Dame High School band. For two years, she has performed in all kinds of weather in support of her school. Upon graduation, Susan hopes to pursue a career in elementary education while teaching competitive twirling.

It is needless to say that ballet is important in my life That fact has been obvious to me and my family since I began studying at the age of five. I use the word "studying" because ballet is a form of art , and any art form requires study and intensive investigation.

I feel that ballet fills a need in my existence. It gives me life, energy and purpose! In giving life to a performance, I find that I can create a new dimension to the character or part that I am portraying Where the energy and discipline is required in dance, I know that I am in control of my movements because I have met the challenge of my instructors. The purpose of my work is to entertain and seek the apptoval of my peers and those people interested in the very demanding art of dance.

My life would be incomplete without my desire to make my audience pleased with the complex effort involved in my performing Applause is my reward!

I believe in God and His help in my performing. I also believe in a very popular saying among dancers which says, "Dance is the only art wherein we are the stuff of which it is made!!"

Ballet is one of the most disciplined art forms. The training needed to be a dancer is quite extensive. Most girls begin very young in order to develop the muscles needed to be a dancer. At some point, they must decide which is more important , ballet or their social lives.

Many girls have the determination to be a dancer but lack the talent or body strength necessary. In addition to these three assets, students must have the opportunity to study with a good teacher in order to learn proper technique.

I've been studying ballet since I was two years old, and at the age of eleven I began my association with Gerogina Parkinson, ballet mistress of the American Ballet theater. I spend between 14-18 hours a week dancing, and when I am in full rehearsal, this increases to 22 hours. So, as you can see, it takes a lot of time, determination, and talent to become a ballet dancer.

Beginnings

The Freshmen and Sophomores gathered for the first time on September 14, 1983 on the lower field. The dress code was suspended for the day, and every imaginable costume was worn. Games were played such as Volleyball, Football, and Frisbee. The Pros provided music for dancing The most memorable part of the day was the dance contests and the people who participated in them. The school provided us with hamburgers, hot dogs, and soda. Everyone enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. It was a very eventful day which will be remembered.

Blue and White Day was a search for the gold here at Notre Dame this year. It began with the juding of homerooms which was made difficult because of the originality on each level. There were toga parties, luaus, a circus , ghouls, goblins, prize fights and an impromptu orphanage. There was definitely a feeling of electricity in the air while the band marched through the school.

The highlight of the day was the traditional pep rally which stimulated the energies of students, teachers, and players. Each team was introduced and the cheerleaders performed to "Look out for #1 " which lent enthusiasm to the whole scene.

Winners for homerooms were announced and given gold ribbons for their excellence. 12B led by Mrs. Burzachiello came out on top for the seniors, IIJ coached by Sr. Mar yan n Peters , lOe commanded by Mrs Burke and 9K inspired by Mrs. Paixo also won.

To end the day, there was the competition between each grade level which included 3 legged soccer and the obstacle course. Surprisingly enough, the freshmen came out on top which proves that even the newcomers to Notre Dame are "going for the gold!"

Initiation

Ring Night is a part of our growth and an extension toward graduation. It was a very special occasion for us as we shared this moment with our family, our friends, and all those who we love and admire. The Mass was celebrated by Father Hughes and the readings and prayers were presented by Student Government. Renea Nix, Marybeth Kilkenny, Kurt Harendza, Carlene Fritz, Charisse West, Sue Conti, and James Lynch, prepared the mass and contributed to the celebration. The mass was beautiful and also a bit scary as we realized what the ring symbolized for all of us We are getting older, and we will soon leave some of those people whom we love behind us. All of the memories came back to us that night; the times we spent with our friends, the times we got hurt and were cheered by a friend and the times of victory and pride. After the celebration we all went to the cafeteria to talk, eat, and turn all of our friends' rings.

This night symbolized the unity and closeness of the whole Junior class as we gathered together to share this one special moment in our lives which leads us closer to the future.

into the 80's

By the time February rolls around , most everyone needs to be picked up and re-spirited in order to survive the rest of the year. N D.'s solution was spirit week. The sophomores started off the week, becoming the " class with clash." The juniors followed, wearing their hats and shades. The freshmen showed their spirit by wearing their clothes inside out and backwards, while the seniors topped all by dressing to their "Roaring Twenties " theme.

On Friday, the week ended with a pep rally , and the entire school dressing up - freshmen in blue, sophomores in stripes, juniors in green and seniors in red. They honored the winter sports teams, and cheered on their classmates and friends during the students vs. teachers volleyball game. The band then played a few songs, and the cheerleaders performed a dance In all, it was a fun-filled, spirited week that gave everyone the strength to continue on for the second half of the year.

The Senior Spirituality Day was an enjoyable day for all. The theme was "Is my life blessed" and all throughout the day we saw how we were blessed, in many different ways. During the workshops in the classrooms, we got to know our classmates better through sharing our ideas, dreams, and goals. Confessions were heard after which a penetential service was given. During this there was a clown mime by the senior Honor Religion Class. This dealt with the beatitudes and was very effective in helping us to get a better look at ou"rselves. The day as a whole was very rewarding, and it helped us all to see that we are indeed blessed.

Koinonia, Storytellers,

The Storytellers Club of Notre Dame who work in conjunction with the Clowning Club, is made up of members from the student body who give of their time to make people laugh and hopefully create a happier world if only for a little while.

The Club traveled to St. Francis Hospital to give a Halloween party and tell stories to children unable to be home for the holiday. The members shared laughter with the children as well as told stories.

The Storytellers also traveled to the Adult Day Care Center where they performed skits along with the Clowning Club. The students were proud and honored with the warmness of the reception they received and were glad that they could spread a little happiness to the wonderful people there. They also traveled to an inner city library to entertain and were well received at A Big Brothers and Sisters Social.

The Club also threw a party on Valentine's Day for the children at Martin House. There, the members intermixed with the children for a fun fllied day of giggles and laughs. The Club thoroughly enjoyed acting out skits and telling stories of which the children actively participated. We look forward to many more performances for the enjoyment of both the young and old.

Computer Club

Many of N.D.'s students met weekly during the year to engage in various games of skill and to experiment with and polish up on computer programming. Under the moderation and instruction of Mr. Fred Hochschild, adventurers and hackers developed their imaginations and programming skills in an informal club atmosphere. Now in its fourth year, the Games and Computers Club has become an established N.D. activity and with the advent of computer classes this year, it has a very promising future.

The 1983-1984 school year was an interesting and exciting year for FBLA. The club visited several business organizations and offices, including Merrill Lynch 1n Lawrenceville and Squibb in Princeton. One of the club's major activities was The Annual Central Jersey FBLA Competition; the club was very pleased that two of its senior members, Ann Lieggi and Carol Serock, placed in this competition and went on to compete in the New Jersey State FBLA Competition. Worth the Wait

The ski trip this year was to start a little sooner than expected for the seniors and juniors The reason for this - transportation to Vermont was to be by plane!

Approximately 120 students were to be flown , but due to bad weather conditions, "Flight II" was cancelled. This forced a busload of snOw- and slope-hungry students to sit in an airport for 10 hours until a bus became available - at 11 PM!

Off to a miserable start but still desiring to have a good time, "Flight II" made the best of a bad situation. At 6:30 AM "Flight II" arrived in Bolton Valley, 12 Yz hours past schedule. Tired and weary from an exhausting trip , the passengers of " Flight II" were quickly refreshed by the sight of the slopes.

During the day, ND skiers tackled the terrain of the mountains and challenged every slope. Wipe-outs were frequent for all levels of ability, but even more so to the wobbly-kneed, first-time skiers.

As the busses headed down the mountainside, homewardbound , we all thought of the great time we had shared. The underclassmen looked ahead to further trips in their next years at ND. The seniors, however, thought this ski trip - their last - to be the best ever!

If ever a man could be considered indispensable to a production, it would have to be Mr. John Grussler. Working with a student staff, he annually produces sets rivalling those of local professional theatre. From design, construction and implementation, he is an integral part of the artistic backgrounds.

In addition, Mr. Fred Hochschild handled stage management for the first time. Under his guidance, the play ran smoothly Props were provided by Mrs. Beverly Kearns, and Miss Julie Campo. The incomparable sets were provided by Sister Judy Ward and Mrs. Enea Tierno Costumes were handled by Mrs Judy Paixao, Sister Mary Ann Peters, and Mrs. Judy Salcewicz. Makeup was ably provided by Mr. Tom Shaw and Mr. Steve Schultz.

The Ice Hockey Club

Last year through the great cooperation of everyone, Ice Hockey was added as one of the many sports at Notre Dame High School. The twenty-one people that played last year have almost doubled. This year there are thirtyeight players divided into two teams; the white skaters and the blue skaters.

Thanks to the coaching staff of Michael Jennings Sr. and Hap Johnson, the Notre Dame Hockey Program has flourished. This year, due to inter-county interest, six neighboring schools of Notre Dame have come together to form the first hockey league in Mercer County.

The Notre Dame High School Marching Band Unit of 1983 had quite a successful year. It began in the summer with a painstaking week of band camp and reached its climax with an invitation to the Atlantic Coast Championships.

The saga all began in August during band camp. Do you remember band camp? Those were the days of sore feet, sunburn, headaches, and pure exhaustion During this time, with the instruction of Jim and Paul Bresnan, we learned all of the toutines necessary to perform our show.

After a multitude of practices, the big night finally arrived. On Friday, October 7, we proudly marched onto the field. Under the direction of our new band instructor, Mr. John Dondero, and field conductor Lugene Kennebrew, we gave our first home performance of the year.

The highpoints of competition were our first place finish at Absegami High School and our ninth place finish in the Atlantic Coast Chapter Championships. We were later invited to the Atlantic Coast Championships where we scored a personal best of 56.5 points.

Altogether we had a great year. Despite some of the setbacks that we had, we pulled together, performed and achieved.

For Number 1

" Look out for Number One " was the theme that the cheerleaders used to help root our teams on to victory. Whether it be at football or soccer games the voices of our spirited girls could be heard throughout the crowd. Sporting their new sweat suits and rain slickers , the dedicated Varsity Squad happily cheered in even the most unfavorable weather.

Basketball season brought with it something else that was new to the squad: the addition of male cheerleaders. Greg Schiavone , Bob Stemmer , Anthony Tezla and Mike Wargo were a strong help to the g irls as they went on to help create and perform sensational pyramids and exc it ing , challengin stunts.

The Varsity Squad was led by captain Tracy Springer and co-captain Leslie Colacello and Claire Heitzman. The squad cheered under the direction of coach Mrs. Peggy Miller. The JV captains were Karen Bombery and Trish Moran Their new moderator was Miss Pamela Pirone.

This year 's Seniors will take with them the memories of all the good times shared at the games and practices. They leave behind their spirit and best wishes for success to the squads in the years to come. Good Luck ! Lynda Hasbrouck

In addition to its academic reputation, Notre Dame has been recognized as an athletic power. The athletes at Notre Dame are of the brightest caliber, well rounded both intellectually and athletically. Our athletic program has produced champion teams in every season, often multiple ones. The athletes at Notre Dame have learned how to work, and their work has made them winners.

GO FOR THE GOLD!

The Fighting Irish football team finished its 1983 season as undoubtedly the best team that Chappy Moore and his coaching staff has ever produced. Sparked by an explosive backfield and a powerful line, the N.D. offense finished as the best offense in the county. Defensively, N.D. was just as strong, completing the season with five shutouts, twenty-two interceptions, and a multitude of incredible defensive plays.

Notre Dame, led by senior captains, Jim Murray and Darren Rhym, completed the season with a 11-0 record. Looking beyond the win-loss columns, the team achieved many goals in their dominance of the Colonial Valley Conference. Leon Hunt, a junior running back, finished his season with over 1,000 yards rushing.

Veteran line backers, Jim Jacobs and Anthony Teszla, supported by one of the best defensive backfields in the county, also completed their season ranked as the number one defense in the county.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish capped off its season by winning the South Jersey Parochial A Championship defeating Holy Spirit 10-7.

Our Goals

The boys ' varsity soccer team had a very successful season this year. Their 20-4-0 record ranked them third in Mercer County and seventh in the state. The team defeated Pope Paul IV , Christian Brothers Academy , MSGR Donovan and Hudson Catholic ro take the state championship. They received the NJSAA South Jersey State Championship and the CVC co-championship , and it was the first time in head coach Mike Perone ' s career that Notre Dame defeated Steinert Four people made the all CVC team this year: Bob Stemmer, Harold Adams , and the "fabulous Fallons ." Providing the offensive punch were Marcy Kochell , John Davies, Harold Adams and Drew and Brian Fallon Defensive standouts included Harold Adams, Brian O ' Reilly , Rick Ryczkowski , Chris Tatrory , Billy Elek, Jerry Keegan and Joe Panzicca

This year's team tied the school record for most wins in a season. In addition , Notre Dame players scored all the goals in the Ernie Tessein Memorial Game. Head coach Mike Perone hopes ro continue this winning tradition with the 1984 squad.

In Goals

The girls' varsity soccer team once again had a very successful season, finishing with a record of 15-5-1, the second best ever in the school's history. The season was highlighted with a 3-2 victory after Hamiltion in the semifinals of the Mercer County Tournament. This victory avenged an earlier season set back Other highlights were a 2nd place finish in the County Tournament, a 3rd place finish in the conference, and a 4th place ranking in the State.

There were also many outstanding individual performances turned in during the season. Seven players received All-Conference Honors, while five players were recognized on the All-County Roster. The girls were led on offense by Diane Kelly, who graduates as the leading scorer in the school with a total of 78 goals. Bridget Corrado ' s 15 assists was another school record. On defense Stephanie Mahler, an All-County Selection, led the way. With only five phyers graduating, Mrs. Koschek is looking forward to another successful campaign in 1984.

It was a very emotional season for the Varsity field hockey team. They definitely had their ups and downs. The season was off to a terrific start, with victories in the first 3 games. Unfortunately, the luck of the Irish was not with the dollies when they lost their next two games With the dedication of their coach, Barbara Major, the girls won twelve out of their twenty games with one tie, which qualified them for state tournaments The highlight of the season was the game against Hightstown. After an excellent performance in the game , the girls went into double overtime and then a shootout, one on one The final score was 3-2 with Kellie Keirn scoring the winning goal.

Several players were recognized for their outstanding skills Placed on Central Jersey Field Hockey Team, first team were Kathy Allen and Lisa Morgan; Second team : Laurie Holsneck and Cindy Russert; Honorable mentions : Terri Langan , Stacy Madden, Kelli Keirn, and Sharon Sobon. Kathy Allen and Terri Langan were again rewarded for their achievements by making the All-Mercer Team.

The senior girls will be greatly missed by Mrs. Major, and the rest of the girls are looking forward to a fresh new start next season.

Running is one of the loneliest sports. However, when you have one hundred runners pitted against each other you have a team sport, a challenge , and an exciting race!

The girls' season was its most successful so far. After defeating their nemesis , Steinert , in the Mercer County Meet , team captains Melanie Nosal and Susan Foster lead the team to a third place victory in the state meet. The boys met with an equally seccessful season and were paced by seniors Jim Barrett, Joseph Fagan, Dan Kelleher, Chris Poreda and Frank Sobon.

Stride Rights

Notre Dame was very proud of the varsity Winter Track team. The girls had an outstanding season. Their record was seven wins and no losses. They won the State Championships and competed in the Eastern Championships in Boston. They were confident that they would do well. The girls had great determination. Outstanding performances by Charisse West and Lori Stoy in the 55-meter dash, Sharon Sobon, Sonya Vaughan and Lori Stoy in the 4OO-meter dash, Tina Taylor and Stacey Harrison jumping hurdles, Joyce Lanier and Lisa Witkowski throwing shot-put, Helen Rebbeck and Lisa Morgan in the high jump, Anne Marie Hannawacker and Janet Cieslin in the 2 mile run, and Melanie Nosal and Bridget Conboy in the mile run, set the pace for a victorious season.

Although the boys were not successful collectively, they were, however, triumphant individually. Greg Hughes, Rick Ryczkowski, Jeff Kerr, Jim Lopez and Frank Sobon, should all be congratulated for their grueling effort. Both girls and boys should be praised for their self-discipline and their continuous practice. As we can see, the guidance of the head coach, Mr. Anthony Genovesi, and assistant coaches Mr. Hoch, Mr. Gester, Mr. White and Mr. McIntyre, paid off in a valiant season for the varsity Winter Track team

Despite a tough transitional season, the grapplers almost pulled off a major upset leading to a four way tie in the Colonial Valley Conference. However, their dreams were quickly swept under the mat, as they lost a tough duel to once beaten C.V.c. rival Hightstown, 26-24.

The wrestlers were led by senior captains Eric Wells, Steve Wetzel, and Tony Reres who advanced to Regional Competition.

Looking ahead, 1984-85 promises to be a strong season for the Irish, as Coach Dambro returns lettermen Jeff Rick, Mark Robertson, Al Varrichio, and Pete Nolan as seniors and Scott Pullen and John McDonald as junior strongholds for the Irish.

The seniors would like to extend a hearty thank you to Coach Dambro, and Asst. Coach John Lynn; who spent countless hours training, conditioning, and preparing us for action from November of Freshman year to March of Senior year. We would also like to thank the cheerleaders and fans for their support, but most especially our parents who make their plans around ours, who transport us back and forth to practice, who back us all through our season, and support our eating habits for the other eight months of the year! Establishing Our

The Irish came into the season with high hopes. Despite a 3-5 start and the tough loss of leading rebounder senior Doug Holmes, the Irish regrouped to win 13 out of their last 17 games. Overall, the team finished with a very fine 17-10 record. Seniors on the squad included Rich Johnson, Mark Miller and high scoring Anthony "Thrill" Hill. To honor their efforts Anthony as well as junior Tom Gavin were named to the first team All CVe. Junior Brian O'Reilly was also awarded an honorable mention. Coached by Dave Milinowicz and assisted by Greg Schafer, 1983-84 proved ro be a very exciting year for the boys varsity basketball team.

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team once again completed a very successful season. Led by seniors Kathy Allen, Colleen Flynn and Amy Masonis the team captured the Irish Christmas Tournament, with an exciting win over Trenton High in the finals. The girls were also Champions of the Mercer County Tournament. In the state tournament the Irish once again continued their winning ways, advancing to the South Jersey Parochial "A" finals. With theJ.V. finishing with a record of 17-3 and the freshman at 24-2, Coach John Simone is looking forward to many more successful seasons.
