The Mosaic and the Emotion
For me, composition has always been, above all, a game of mosaics. I enjoy its artisanal, constructive, architectural aspect. But if I’m asked to explain the mechanism, to reveal the secret of my workshop, I cannot. Some musicologists have done so, offering me astonishing analyses of my scores, showing how the relationships between sections, the harmonies, the assembling of melodies fall within a specific system, with its own logic, a series of rules, a set of procedures. Yet I am not aware of it, because for me composition remains an intuitive gesture, where ear and brain marry each day, and then set my pencil in motion.
To begin a piece, however, I must be moved. Not because I wish to “express myself through music” – I leave that to the performers – but because that game of mosaics, the Lego of composition, only works if, at the outset, there is a thrill. Often it is an image; other times, a story; still other times, a performer, whose attitude, skills, and spirit I know. And then there are cases when the emotion comes from encountering a text, from words that, intuitively and instantly, strike me, lodge themselves in my heart, almost asking to be evoked by a piece of music.
That is what happened with Io cammino muovendo le dita
The piece, in fact, would not exist if Francesca Dego had not introduced me to a wonderful poem by her father Giuliano, which contains rhythm, beauty, intensity, and – if read carefully – even something resembling a small story. I can only be grateful to her, deeply grateful. And now I hope that something of all this may reach your ears.

L’incastro e l’emozione
Da sempre per me la composizione è soprattutto un gioco di incastri. Mi piace l’aspetto artigianale, costruttivo, architettonico. Se però mi chiedono di spiegare il meccanismo, di svelare il segreto del mio cantiere, non ne sono capace. Alcuni musicologi l’hanno fatto, regalandomi analisi stupefacenti delle mie partiture, dove le relazioni tra le sezioni, le armonie, l’assemblaggio delle melodie risiedono in un sistema specifico, che ha una sua logica, una serie di regole, un insieme di procedure; ma io non ne sono consapevole, perché per me la composizione rimane un gesto intuitivo, dove ogni giorno si sposano orecchio e cervello, facendo poi muovere la mia matita.
Per avviare un pezzo, però, ho bisogno di emozionarmi. Non perché io voglia “esprimermi attraverso la musica” – questa è una cosa che lascio agli interpreti – ma perché quel gioco di incastri, il Lego della composizione, mi viene bene solo se in partenza, a monte, c’è un brivido. Spesso si tratta di un’immagine; altre volte di una storia; altre ancora di un interprete, del quale conosco l’attitudine, le abilità, lo spirito. E poi ci sono i casi in cui l’emozione proviene dall’incontro con un testo, con parole che in modo intuitivo, immediato, mi toccano, mi si conficcano nel cuore, quasi mi chiedono di essere evocate da un pezzo di musica. È quello che è successo per Io cammino muovendo le dita La partitura, infatti, non esisterebbe se Francesca Dego non mi avesse fatto conoscere una meravigliosa poesia di suo padre Giuliano che ha dentro ritmo, bellezza, intensità e – a leggerla bene – persino qualcosa che assomiglia a una piccola storia. Non posso dunque che esserle grato, profondamente grato. E ora spero che qualcosa di tutto questo possa arrivare alle orecchie.
