Vorwort

Preface

In the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, the present composition is listed under the works for lute as “Suite in c” (BWV 997). Even though its BWV ranking suggests a different numbering, it has generally been referred to as the second lute suite since the first edition of Bach’s lute works by Hans Dagobert Bruger in 1921. It is the most accomplished lute work to have come down to us from the hand of Johann Sebastian Bach. This new edition of the work seems to warrant an explanation, since the piece has been arranged for guitar in the past, in editions that usually present it in A minor, as opposed to the written B minor or sounding C minor (with the use of the capotasto) of this edition. To begin with, this new arrangement is justified by the choice of the key. What makes the performance of several suites by a composer so appealing is the use of different keys which infuse the atmosphere of a piece with their respective characteristics; witness the other instruments for which Bach wrote a number of cyclical works. In original works and arrangements for the guitar, it has become increasingly common in recent times to use the scordatura or capotasto as a means of leaving the more obvious tonal worlds of E minor and A minor. The Suite BWV 997 is also played more rarely on the guitar than the other lute works. It makes enormous technical demands on the player – yet in A minor it remains unsatisfying in two respects. Because of its transposition a third downward, the sound is occasionally very bass-heavy. This interferes with the clarity of the voice-leading at several passages, and the music text frequently seems like a makeshift solution. In B minor, however, the player not only reproduces the original pitch with the capotasto but also, from a relative point of view, reaches one further note downward, which is a major advantage in the endeavor to obtain a perfect musical text, not only at the cadenzas on the fourth degree. An evaluation of the sources of BWV 997 is a complex operation. While there is no extant autograph, we do know of more than ten copies in keyboard notation as well as a transcription in lute tablature: Partita | al | Liuto. | Composta dal Sigre J. S. Bach by Johann Christian Weyrauch (1694–1771). Due to its special importance, this transcription deserves a closer examination. – One is immediately struck by the fact that the nomenclature of the medium, titles and movements in the copies in keyboard notation is discrepant, incomplete or even totally absent. Bach’s suites generally contain no fugues and, vice versa, his few sonatas (e.g. for violin solo) obviously contain no dance movements. Thus the two designations “Suite” and “Sonata,” as they are found exclusively in the copies in keyboard notation, do not really fit the work. Bach generally calls works with a looser sequence of movements “Partita.” Weyrauch’s version is the only one to use this title. – The use of the term “Prelude” for the first movement does not quite suit the character of the piece. In Bach’s instrumental works, this term usually serves to indicate pieces structured as broad sound surfaces or overtures in several parts. More appropriate are other terms such as “Sinfonia,”

„Sinfonia“, „Fantasia“, „Aria“ o.

“Fantasia,” “Aria,” etc., such as in the partitas for harpsichord. Here, too, Weyrauch proves to be the exception by designating the first movement as “Fantasia.” – The notation is also problematic in other respects, since not only is the upper staff notated in the then uncustomary treble clef, but the upper and lower voices are much too distant from one another in the first four movements. On a keyboard instrument, the large distance between the parts is not a practical hindrance, but the resulting sound is definitely unsatisfying. Also worth mentioning are several measures in the fugue which cannot be performed on a keyboard instrument. This lends weight to the hypothesis that the work cannot originally have been conceived for a keyboard instrument. If one transposes the upper staff an octave downward, the resulting tonal spectrum proves to be ideal for the lute. This procedure cannot be used for the Double, however, since it would lead to crossings of parts with the bass, which is why the original range has to be maintained here in a few passages. As mentioned above, Weyrauch transposed an octave downward in his lute tablature, but the Fugue and Double are missing there. In summary, one can assert that this is a mature work which, however, was not arranged for any specific instrument. The features shared by the manuscripts in keyboard notation allow us to conclude that Bach’s source also must not have carried a designation of the title, movements or instrumental medium, nor the identification of its composer. If one bears in mind that at the time of composition (according to Thomas Kohlhase, “not considerably earlier than 1740”) Bach had already repeatedly made the experience that lute works had to be adapted by a proficient player on account of their complex performance technique, it seems plausible that the original manuscript was only conceived as a model. The thin texture characterized by a dominant upper voice and sparse bass motion, as well as the structure of the fugal subject and reduced harmonies of the fugue make a performance on the lute seem quite plausible. Since only Weyrauch provides an apt title for the entire work and the first movement, one might suppose that he either had a different and more accurately marked source at his disposal, or that he created his lute version in close collaboration with Bach. The decision to omit the Fugue and Double may have been motivated by the degree of difficulty of these pieces, which is particularly uncommon for the lute. We have thus decided to borrow from Weyrauch the more convincing title “Partita” for the work and “Fantasia” for the first movement, while at the same time retaining all the movements of this exceptional work in this guitar arrangement. The transcription technique itself affords a new access to the work. Supplementing the arrangement standard that has come down to us from Bruger, I have not only attempted to see the vertical dimension at problematic passages, but also to consider the horizontal lines at the same time. Through this “context-interpretive procedure,” my transcrip tion clearly differs from other common editions in several measures. To understand this better, I would like to quote

In view of the tasks to be accomplished by the left hand, the work was arranged in such a way that the music can be mastered by any practiced player. At a very few passages, ossia and ottava indications or notes in small print offer players with a larger stretch of the fingers some alternatives which correspond to the original and would thus be preferable. We have included only the articulation markings which seem particularly legitimated by repeated occurrences in analogous passages or in the other versions. Fingerings were tacitly added. All other additions made by the editor are specified as such by brackets or dotted lines (at slurs).
