Jahrestag der „Confessio Augustana“, der Formulierung des lutherischen Glaubensbekenntnisses, komponiert. Im vierten Satz zitiert, verarbeitet und variiert Mendelssohn kunstvoll den Luther-Choral „Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott“ und setzte damit dem Reformator Martin Luther ein musikalisches Denkmal. Anfänglich zwiespältig aufgenommen, ist die Reformations-Sinfonie inzwischen fest im Konzertrepertoire angekommen. Die im Hinblick auf das Reformation-Jubiläumsjahr 2017 entstandene Fassung von Torsten Sterzik für Soli, Chor und Orgel möchte dem Werk auch einen Weg in die Kirchenmusik ebnen. Sie gibt dem Luther-Choral im vierten Satz die Worte zurück und bezieht darüber hinaus auch den dritten Satz mit ein, dessen ariosen Soli von einer Sopran- bzw. Tenorstimme übernommen werden. Die vorliegende Ausgabe ist für Aufführungen mit Orgel gedacht, kann aber auch als Einstudierungshilfe für den Chor und die Solisten verwendet werden, wenn das Werk mit Orchester aufgeführt wird.
The Reformation Symphony was composed in 1830 for the 300th anniversary of the “Confessio Augustana”, the founding of the Lutheran confession of faith. In the fourth movement, Mendelssohn quotes, elaborates and varies artfully the Luther-chorale “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” [God is our fortress], erecting a musical monument to the reformer Martin Luther. After an initial conflicting reception, the Reformation Symphony meanwhile is established firmly in the concert repertoire. With regard to the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, this version for solos, choir and organ by Torsten Sterzik originated to pave the Reformation Symphony‘s way into the church as well, restoring the text to Luther’s chorale in the fourth movement and additionally including the third movement, its arioso solos being sung by a soprano and a tenor solo. The present edition is intended for performances with organ. It can also be used for the preparation of the chorus and soloists for performances with orchestra.
