Biografie

Der 1974 in Innsbruck geborene Komponist bezieht für seine Musik immer wieder Inspiration aus Literatur, Film und bildender Kunst. Auch Reflexionen über philosophische Fragen, gesellschaftliche Prozesse oder Politik sind Anlass für seine kompositorische Arbeit. Dabei folgen seine kunstvoll konstruierten Werke vom Solostück bis zum abendfüllenden Musiktheaterwerk stets einer konsequenten Dramaturgie.

Staud studierte Komposition in Wien und Berlin, u.a. bei Michael Jarrell und Hanspeter Kyburz. Bereits ein Jahr nach seinem Studium gewann Staud 2002 den Erste Bank Kompositionspreis, 2003 den Preis des International Rostrum of Composers, 2004 den Förderpreis der Ernst-vonSiemens-Musikstiftung, 2009 den Paul-HindemithPreis, 2012 den Preis für Musik der Stadt Wien und 2022 den Österreichischen Kunstpreis.

Auftragswerke schrieb Staud unter anderem für die Wiener Staatsoper, Salzburger Festspiele, Lucerne Festival, Wiener und Berliner Philharmoniker, Cleveland Orchestra, BR-Symphonieorchester, Staatskapelle Dresden, Münchner Kammerorchester, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, IRCAM. Er arbeitete mit namhaften Solist*innen und Dirigenten zusammen.

2015/2016 war Staud Gastprofessor an der Universität für Musik und darst. Kunst Wien, seit 2018 ist Staud Professor für Komposition am Salzburger Mozarteum. Er ist Mitinitiator der Kompositions-Sommerkademie Arco.

Biography

Born in Innsbruck in 1974, the composer repeatedly draws inspiration for his music from literature, film and visual arts. Philosophical questions, social processes and politics provide inspiration for his compositional work as well. His artfully constructed works, which range from solo pieces to fulllength music theater compositions, always follow a consistent dramaturgy.

Staud studied composition in Vienna and Berlin with, among others, Michael Jarrell and Hanspeter Kyburz.

Just one year after graduating, Staud was awarded the Erste Bank Composition Prize in 2002, the International Rostrum of Composers Prize in 2003, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Prize in 2004, the Paul Hindemith Prize in 2009, the Music Prize of the City of Vienna in 2012 and the Austrian Art Prize in 2022

Staud has been commissioned to write works for the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, the Cleveland Orchestra, the BR Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien and IRCAM. He has worked with renowned soloists and conductors.

Staud was a visiting professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2015/2016 and has been a professor of composition at the Mozarteum Salzburg since 2018. He is co-initiator of the Arco Composition Summer Academy.
