A public hearing will be held during City Council’s meeting today to discuss a uniform model of collecting non-ad valorem special assessments. According to backup material for the proposed resolution, the non-ad valorem special assessments is a billing method for
an annual assessment to be placed on a property bill. In order to improve collections, as well as reduce account delinquency rates, the city began using this method in fiscal year 2002. Currently, the city uses a non-ad valorem assessment for utilities, residential solid waste, stormwater, fire services, impact and CIAC loans, vacant lot mowing

Ringing in the holidays The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral hosted its “Holiday Festival of Lights” in South Cape Saturday evening, helping the community kick off the holiday season. Among the festivities were live performances from such groups as the Calendar Girls, above; the lighting of the Christmas tree, right; vendors; holiday music; a 15-ton snow slide; an early visit from Santa Claus; and much more. Council to discuss mayor pro tem position, purchase of lots within Bimini Basin District

The city of Cape Coral will host its Second Annual New Year's Eve Celebration Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 6 p.m. to midnight, in South Cape, along Southeast 47th Terrace and Southeast 10th Place. Thousands are expected to attend the special city event and enjoy music from the Baha Men, Deb & the Dynamics and DJ Rifik. To accommodate attendees of all ages, two New Year's Eve countdowns will take place with synchronized pyrotechnics scheduled for 8 p.m. and midnight. This large, family-friendly street festival will include shopping, food vendors, games and activities for children and much more while waiting for the countdown to 2025! This resolution would allow for the flexibility to explore, as well as consider opportunities when developing the FY2026 budget. The resolution has 17 additional potential assessments. These include:
The City Council is expected vote on its updated agenda rules and procedure during its Wednesday afternoon meeting, which includes verbiage about the position of mayor pro tem. According to the document, the additional language includes “notwithstanding anything herein, in the event the Mayor Pro Tem is incapable of performing those duties of the election, which are set forth in Section 4.06(b) of the City Charter, due to a catastrophic event, or other circumstances that render the Mayor Pro Tem unavailable for longer than a period of 10 days, or should there have been an inability to meet the election requirements of Section 4.06(b) pursuant to the City Charter, the mayor and City Council may appoint a presiding officer, for a period of time that shall not exceed one-year, and that such appointment shall allow the presiding officer to exercise those responsibilities and duties that are set forth in section 4.06(b) of the City Charter.” The council will also vote on a resolution to purchase 4832 Triton Court East – lots 31 and 32, block 84, Cape Coral unit 5, which is located in the Bimini Basin District for $504,000 plus closing costs not to exceed $10,000. The City Council meeting will be held at 4:30 pm., Wednesday, Dec. 11, in City Council Chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. The meeting is open to the public.
