What Peer Support Actually Looks Like
Peer support isn't therapy, and it isn't a support group led by someone reading from a manual. It's a certified peer with lived experience sitting beside you literally or virtually sharing coping strategies that actually held up in real life, helping you navigate systems that feel impossible to untangle alone, and reminding you that “still standing” is possible because they're proof of it It shows up in warmlines, drop-in centers, peer-led groups, one-on-one mentorship, and even quiet check-in texts between meetings

Before the first bell rings on a new school year, there are young people walking through the doors carrying more than backpacks. LeeAnn is one of them and her story is proof that where you start doesn't have to be where you stay.
Everything Shifted at Once
A Childhood Shaped by Survival
Growing up, LeeAnn's home life was shaped by her mother's drug addiction and the abuse that came with it verbal, physical, mental, and emotional School became a place where pain followed her into the classroom, and neglect at home made it hard to focus on anything else
Without a stable environment to anchor her, LeeAnn started drifting toward other young people already caught in cycles of trouble friends in and out of juvenile detention, relationships that mirrored the instability she already knew Law enforcement became a familiar presence in her life, not because of who she was, but because of the streets she walked and the company she kept
Then everything shifted at once. Her father became terminally ill. Her mother was evading law enforcement. And LeeAnn, still a teenager, found herself alone fighting to save her father's home from foreclosure, because she knew it was the only place she had left to lay her head. She let other kids move in to help cover bills, but instead of help, she got a wrecked home and empty promises

A Community That Showed Up
It was a community-based organization that finally changed her trajectory connecting her to safe housing, a loving environment, and support services that didn't just meet her immediate needs, but helped her rebuild how she saw herself and her future.
Celebrating life with the people who showed up
Today
Today, LeeAnn has her high school diploma She's working, stable, and moving forward with a plan one that includes joining the military and eventually becoming a police officer herself, turning the very system that once watched her with suspicion into one she hopes to serve with purpose.
She still carries grief from her father's passing, and seeing her mother's car around town can still bring old pain to the surface But she also carries something stronger now: community, direction, and hope.

The friends in and out of jail, the relationships built on chaos they can pull your whole life off course before you even realize it's happening. Surround yourself with people who want to see you win. Then turn around and be that person for someone else.

It means early mornings before the packing houses open, dairy shifts that don't pause for a school calendar, and grandparents who step in when Mom and Dad are still out in the orchards. A backpack full of supplies doesn't erase that — but it lifts one weight off a full week.
From Visalia to Porterville and the small towns in between, back-to-school drives this season are stocked by neighbors who know exactly what a hard harvest year feels like. That's what makes them work: they're not charity from a stranger. They're the county taking care of its own.

In a farming county, asking for help can feel complicated — it seems like everybody knows everybody, and word travels fast between Visalia, Porterville, and the small towns tucked between the orchards. That's exactly why peer support matters so much here: the person on the other end of the line has walked the same dirt roads, worked the same long harvest seasons, and knows what it costs to finally make the call.
They're not a stranger with a clipboard. They're someone who understands that in Tulare County, asking for help takes as much courage as anything else you'll do all year.

That's its own kind of medicine: a reminder that you're part of something bigger.

A Home, A Name, A Purpose
How Antonia turned decades of survival into a life she once thought was out of reach and now opens her door so others can find their way too
There are stories that don't make headlines but change lives quietly, one day at a time Antonia's is one of them
For years, she carried more than most people ever have to trauma that stretched across decades, homelessness, and isolation from the family she loved at the exact moment she needed them most There were no resources waiting for her No roadmap. No one to tell her that what she was living through had a name, or an end
But survival slowly became something more Piece by piece, Antonia found her way to support real support, the kind that doesn't just treat a diagnosis but sees the whole person. She found community, and forgiveness, for others and for herself
“I didn't know healing was even possible for someone like me. I thought I was just supposed to survive it.”

But her story didn't stop at her own healing it turned into purpose. Antonia became a certified Peer Support Specialist, now leading groups on bipolar disorder, meditation, and eating disorders, meeting people exactly where she once stood herself
Antonia is honest about the fact that her life isn't perfect Healing rarely moves in a straight line, and she'll be the first to say she's still growing, still learning, still working through it. But she's clear about one thing: it's a life worth living, and one she looks forward to continuing
Antonia has turned her own home into something more than four walls a safe place in the community where she offers Peer Support Services and brings women together to connect, create, and simply be seen
She's hosted backyard barbecues, pumpkin-painting afternoons, and quiet gatherings where the only agenda is belonging.

New Leadership, Same Roots
Holding much of this together is the Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce, now under new leadership. Kimberly Davidson stepped in as president and CEO on February 1, 2026, succeeding Kim Cousins after 20 years of service to the chamber Davidson brings a career built on public-private partnership, with a clear focus on lifting up entrepreneurship, tourism, and community investment across the valle y ensuring Lake Elsinore's next chapter is written by the people who already call it home

When you live an hour from the nearest clinic — a normal Tuesday in parts of Riverside County — peer support can't always happen face-to-face. That's why so much of it here happens by phone: a text on the Take My Hand app, a call to the CARES Line, a voice that knows exactly what it's like to feel far from help.
The peers on the other end aren't reading from a script. They've been through their own hard seasons, in the same desert heat or the same valley traffic, and they came out the other side ready to walk with someone else.

It's a reminder that no one has to face their hardest days alone.

Starting the school year prepared changes everything — for a child, and for the parent standing beside them at the bus stop. A backpack that's already packed, supplies that are already bought, and a checklist that's already checked off replace first-day dread with first-day confidence.
For families stretched thin by work, caregiving, or recovery, that preparation doesn't always come easy. That's exactly why community back-to-school events matter: free supplies and a hand extended before the first bell rings mean no child walks in feeling behind, and no parent walks in feeling alone.

Comenzar el año escolar preparado lo cambia todo — para un niño, y para el padre que lo acompaña en la parada del autobús. Una mochila ya lista, útiles ya comprados y una lista ya completada reemplazan el miedo del primer día con confianza.
