SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING INFORMATION
Paper Shred Days
TOKI | 2026
Quarterly Special Waste Collections
The Town of Kiawah Island offers three additional forms of waste collection for Kiawah residents on a quarterly basis:
• Brown Trash,
• Household Hazardous/Electronic Waste (HHW), and
• Paper Shredding.
WHAT IS BROWN TRASH?
These are metallic items that cannot be collected in regular waste or recycle collections due to restrictions imposed by the landfill. Metallic items cannot go into the incinerators, and therefore, must be placed in the landfill.
1. BROWN TRASH
Brown Trash collection is included in the cost of curbside, backdoor, and Friday paidfor trash service. For Brown Trash days, residents are instructed to put items (see list on website) on the curb by 7:00 a.m. the morning of the event or the night before. If items are placed on the curb after 7:00 a.m. on the designated day, there is no guarantee they will be collected.
2. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS/ELECTRONIC WASTE (HHW)
HHW collection takes place at Town Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Bring the appropriate items (see list on website) to the Town Hall parking lot at 4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway for disposal on designated days.
Below are things to consider before participating in the HHW collection:
• HHW collection is for Kiawah residents only.
• Strict hours! Don’t leave items at Town Hall or put items in their dumpsters before or after the event.
3. SHRED
DAYS
Shred Days take place at Town Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on designated days. Bring your paper documents to the Town Hall parking lot at 4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway for shredding.

Kiawah Island residents can recycle food scraps for FREE at participating compost collection sites on the island. The food scraps are then sent to the Bees Ferry Compost Facility, instead of the landfill, to be recycled into compost. Prior to signing up for this program, we encourage all interested residents to watch the video on our website to learn how our program works.
What is composting?
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as food scraps, into a valuable soil amendment. The resulting decomposed matter is called compost. It is rich in nutrients and can be used as a natural fertilizer.
What are the benefits of composting?
• Cuts down on trash and expenses. The Charleston region throws away more than 30,000 tons of food scraps each year and food scraps make up one quarter of the collected garbage. Composting saves space and taxpayer money needed for disposal in landfills.
• Combats climate change. Food waste recycling will help meet area Climate Action Plan goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and protecting our air and water from pollution to fight climate change.
• Protects against flooding. Compost nourishes soil for healthier parks and gardens and increases stormwater absorption capacity.
• Saves plants and animals. Compost reduces the need for expensive and polluting chemical fertilizers, makes plants healthier, and can be used without harming wildlife or ecosystem health.
Does Kiawah Island have compost collection sites?
Yes, Kiawah Island has a total of two compost collection sites:
Town Hall (4475 Betsy Kerrison Pkwy) Kestrel Court Recycling Center
How do I get access to the compost collection sites on Kiawah?
Kiawah Island residents must register their household and successfully complete a brief training. Upon registering, you will receive additional information and an access code which is required to drop off items at the compost collection sites.
