recently had the opportunity to speak with a high school business club about the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant. It was very interesting to be back in a classroom, and to speak about the work the Chamber has done over our 156 years, the work that we are doing now, and the opportunities for the future. Brantford-Brant is well positioned to respond to the opportunities for growth in front of us. We have a robust and innovative school system and postsecondary training and development partners, with the vision and ability to adapt quickly to the demands of business and the accelerated changes occurring in the global, national, provincial and local economies. You will hear more about the Chamber’s student engagement strategy this spring, directly from our students themselves. Within a year,

David Prang we will have engaged eight students and one new graduate at the Chamber office from six different schools in assisting with Chamber programming and activities. These work integrated learning opportunities not only provide cost-effective support for Chamber staff, advancing the needs and programs of our membership, but they also offer students valuable frontline,

The Chamber will continue to work with our partners on the Education Committee to promote their students and engaging in co-op partnerships with our friends at Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, University of Waterloo, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, and the Grand Erie District School Board. Just because summer’s coming soon doesn’t mean learning has to stop; the Chamber looks forward to further increasing our involvement in local education and we encourage individual members to do the same. The wider the array of opportunities and experiences available to learners in Brantford-Brant, the stronger and more diverse we become as a whole.

Student Voice Resilient Restaurant Industry Continues to Serve our Community

s COVID-19 restrictions and policies continue to phase out, we must begin to look back at the harsh economic realities that so many of our local businesses faced during the pandemic. While nearly every industry was hit hard by restrictions and concerns over spread, the restaurant industry was particularly damaged by COVID-19 restrictions. One such restaurant is The Sherwood Restaurant and Catering, owned and operated by the hard working and community-minded Dennis Duce. Mr. Duce made it very clear that the struggles for restaurants through the pandemic were particularly difficult.

Owen Portelli Going into the pandemic, he had a vibrant staff; as a result of COVID-19, the restaurant lost ten valued employees and Mr. Duce is often the “only guy remaining on day-to-day operations.” He and his crew have faced this struggle throughout the pandemic. With employment shortages throughout the industry, Mr. Duce and his team have been forced to become versatile in their roles, filling in wherever needed.

While staffing and shut-downs for the industry were hard on restaurant owners, the most difficult aspect has been navigating the many makeor-break decisions. During the first province-wide shutdown in the spring of 2020, The Sherwood only made $100 in sales due to reduced demand. When he intended to reopen for Mother’s Day catering that year, many employees either did not feel safe to return to work or refused to return to part-time work. As a result, Mr. Duce was forced to hire retired former employees to deal with labour shortages. When the rules for the spring of 2021 became clear, Mr. Duce made the call to invest significant capital into building a patio so that they could serve guests and comply with government outdoor seating laws. Advocacy Ontario Chamber of Commerce achieves key policy wins By David Prang

Our Provincial Election Business After Hours event on May 10 features a meet and greet component with our candidates, produced in partnership with RogersTV. The Chamber remains proud to be the trusted, non-partisan community producer of the televised debate in our region, and we welcome you to come meet our candidates representing parties running in the majority of ridings in Ontario. Provincially, the Ontario Chamber of

Commerce has achieved a number of key policy wins over the past year. As we build out our website, we will highlight these more regularly. A few key wins include: 1. Highway 69 Expansion – a policy proposal we co-sponsored with the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, this key piece of infrastructure helps to ensure road safety and a more efficient supply chain to and from Northern Ontario .

5. Two initiatives on lowering the carbon footprint of businesses, as supported in the Climate Catalyst report: Decarbonizing Steel manufacturing to support low-emission, hydrogen ready furnaces and vertically integrating supply chains to support EV battery development.

Changes to Ontario’s Wills and Estates Laws

everal major changes to Ontario’s Succession Law Reform Act came into effect on January 1, 2022. The changes were introduced through the Accelerating Access to Justice Act and are intended to modernize Ontario’s wills and estates laws to better serve Ontarians. Remote (virtual) signing of wills and powers of attorney were first introduced as a temporary option during the COVID-19 emergency order made in 2020. The option has now become permanent. Wills may be formally signed and witnessed virtually provided that: (1) at least one of the witnesses is a lawyer or paralegal; (2) the testator’s and witnesses’ signatures are made at the same time; and (3) the virtual meeting allows the participants to see and communicate with each other in real time, and the signatures on the counterparts are “wet”, i.e. made with a pen as electronic signatures on wills have not been approved. Previously, the Succession Law Reform Act provided that a will is automatically revoked upon entering a marriage, except for in limited circumstances. That provision has been removed. Under the amended legislation, the default rule is that wills are not revoked by marriage. This change is intended to provide protection against predatory marriages. The same change has already been adopted in several other provinces.

While divorced spouses are not entitled to share in their former spouse’s estate, the legislation previously provided that separated spouses who never formally divorced could share in their former spouse’s estate. The legislation has been updated so that separated spouses are now treated the same as divorced spouses and are not entitled to share in their former spouse’s estate. “Separated spouses” means that, before the testator’s death, the spouses either: (1) lived separate and apart because of a marriage breakdown for the 3 years preceding the testator’s death; (2) entered into a valid separation agreement; or (3) there is a court order or family arbitration award which settles the affairs arising from the marriage breakdown. Additionally, the spouses must have been living separate and apart as a result of the marriage breakdown at the time of the testator’s death.

Common law spouses continue to be excluded under the intestacy rules regardless of the number of years the spouses cohabited together. Common law spouses are those who were never married to each other, and who have cohabited continuously for at least 3 years or in a relationship of some permanence and are the parents of a child. The only option available to common law spouses where their spouse dies without a will continues to be making a claim for dependant’s relief. While many of the imposed restrictions were particularly difficult for restaurants, Mr. Duce is appreciative of the provincial programs that offered support for struggling businesses that did help keeping the restaurant in business. The Sherwood received approximately $30,000 in provincial grants over a roughly two-year span, helping to cover losses from COVID shutdowns. Adding in small business loans totalling $60,000, Mr. Duce said that “the government was very proactive on these grants.” While support from the province certainly helps small businesses in these cases, it is ultimately the extreme passion and dedicated work ethic held by business owners such as Mr. Duce that have kept many of our beloved local establishments open over the last two years and are ready to continue to serve our communities. With the trend of re-opening continuing we can only be optimistic for what is to come for not only Mr. Duce and the I Sherwood, but all restaurants in Brantford and Brant.

We support young people (0-18 years) and their families with services that build on their strengths and focus on skill-building, coping strategies, relationships, independence, and resilience. Our services are flexible; provided when and where is best for families at six locations in Brantford. Woodview’s variety of mental health services include: school-based services, in-office counselling, in-home and community outreach services, TeleMental Health, caregiver support, and respite. We also offer Brantford Autism Services, Walk-In Mental Health Clinics, and Youth Drop-In at Harmony Square. At Woodview, youth and family voice is a priority. A full-time person with

We established a Memorial Scholarship Fund in loving memory of Jen Brown, a Woodview staff member, who advocated for others to be heard and accomplish their dreams. The educational award is open to current or past Woodview program participants. We look forward to announcing the first recipient during Mental Health Week!
