Message from the President innovation. By taking the time to recognize success, you are teaching your team members that the things that matter to you as a business owner, manager or department lead are the same things that should matter to them as employees. Strategies that may only have short term success at the cost of long term client relationships become less valued if you choose the right KPIs to celebrate.

Take Time to Celebrate

W

hile it may seem frivolous or distracting to take time away from fulfilling orders and fielding sales calls, it is always important to take time to celebrate the victories in your business. Celebration could manifest itself in many ways, but it always reinforces success. Your team, even if it is a small one, needs positive reinforcement to continue striving for success. What does celebrating business victories look like? Perhaps you announce the best performers in each department on a key performance indicator; you pick the metrics that matter to your business most and publicly congratulate the leaders in your organization who embrace an entrepreneurial spirit. Management definitely requires

4

Paul Bisanti cracking down on poor performance, but negative reinforcement shouldn’t be your only tool. According to the Harvard Business Review, “it would seem that creating positive anticipation in others…may be more effective at motivating action than threatening poor performance. Fear and anxiety can cause us to withdraw and give up rather than take action and improve.” Organizations that celebrate success foster growth, competitiveness, and

When the Chamber of Commerce celebrates the victories of the member companies in our annual Business Excellence Awards, the benefits extend far beyond just the winning organizations. The nominees all benefit from internal recognition of their own successes. Other businesses get to see how thriving companies are celebrated in the community. Don’t get bogged down in the daily grind and forget to celebrate your victories. It’s a good I investment!

T

he Chamber would like to extend a special thank you to the Brantford Regional Real Estate Association for their sponsorship and support of our jointly presented Candidates Debate, and to RogersTV for their production of the debate and our Fireside Chat series with the provincial election candidates. Congratulations to Will Bouma on his re-election as MPP for Brantford-Brant, the Chamber has sent a letter outlining our key priorities of provincial responsibility over the next four years, with Transportation again leading our efforts. In May, we outlined several key policy wins of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce over the past year. As highlighted in the E-News, our policy paper, Create and Implement a Provincial Strategy to Address Homelessness, Addictions, and Mental Health, co-authored with our friends at the Greater Sudbury

and challenging issue. We are working with the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce and Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce on a similar paper on a national scale for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in October.

David Prang Chamber of Commerce, passed unanimously at the OCC AGM and Policy Convention in late April. The OCC will now activate their advocacy team with the newly elected government to address the recommendations in the paper, to bring provincial resources to communities and individuals across the province to assist with this complex

Our focus now turns to the municipal election in October. Both the County of Brant and the City of Brantford have numerous exciting opportunities and challenges for the next term of their respective Councils. The Chamber Advocacy team will be developing key priorities for prospective elected officials to consider, to advance the interests of business and improve the quality of life for all in our region. While there will inevitability be conflicts and competing priorities, concurrently, the Chamber and elected officials will be looking to work together and find common areas we can build bridges I across.

Registering Trademarks Can Protect a Company’s Brand Identity

Brandon Adili

H

aving an identifiable brand helps consumers differentiate the products and services offered by one business from others similar in the marketplace. Businesses often expend a great deal of resources developing images, logos, designs, and other trademarks in attempt to create an identity that consumers can readily recognise and associate with a brand. The ability of a consumer to recognise a brand directly affects the sales of a business and therefor represents one of the most important assets on its balance sheet. While creating an identifiable brand is important for growing a successful business, protecting that asset is equally important to maintaining such success. Other businesses may attempt to capitalize on the goodwill of your brand by using similar trademarks that confuse the consumer into believing that their product or good is associated with your brand. Beyond the issue of another business profiting from a brand that you spent time and resources developing, any negative interaction between the imitating business and the consumer will reflect poorly on the brand and dimmish its value. A great way to safeguard against the above is to register the trademarks forming the identity of your brand. Even though there is no requirement

Waterous Holden Amey Hitchon LLP Brantford 20 Wellington St., Brantford. to register a trademark to create a right thereto, registration creates the presumption of validity and ownership which will assist in facilitating enforcement should the need arise. Enforcing an unregistered trademark against an imitating party requires that one prove the validity and scope of the unregistered trademark in court before enforcement will be considered. Without the benefit of presumed ownership, the owner of the unregistered trademark bears risks being unable to demonstrate validity and scope of the Unregistered Trademark at the time of the claim and further subjects themselves to the increased legal costs of furnishing such evidence. There are restrictions as to what trademarks can be registered. Trademarks that are clearly descriptive of the associated goods and/or services or deceptively misdescriptive of the associated goods and/or services cannot be registered. Further examples of unregistrable trademarks include names and surnames, trademarks that contain the name of a geographical place, and trademarks that are too similar to existing trademarks. Notwithstanding these restrictions, if a

Visit us at brantfordbrantchamber.com n July 2022

trademark has been used for a period of time and such use can be proven to the Registrar of Trademarks, such trademarks may still be registered in spite of the prohibitions above as they are deemed to have acquired a distinct meaning in the minds of consumers outside of the plain reading of same. Whether growing a business or just maintaining an existing one, understanding what trademarks form the identity of your brand and pre-emptively taking steps to safeguard such trademarks will serve to dissuade potential imitators from using your brand while also reducing the legal cost of enforcement should enforcement become necessary. If you would like to discuss how to best protect the trademarks of your business or if you would like to explore the possibility of registering your trademarks, our office would be happy I to advise and assist.

How to use Home Equity to Finance a Home Renovation Project

Michel St. Pierre

T

here are many options for financing a home renovation project through the use of existing equity in your home. Everyone’s circumstances are unique and require a personal touch to provide the best solution for your needs. Pulling out equity from your home can be done through Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCS) and Mortgage Refinancing. Since these options are secured to your home, they do provide lower interest rates and are tax-free cash, however, they do have set up costs such as appraisal and legal fees to consider. A Home equity line of credit (HELOCS) is a revolving credit account. The main advantage to revolving credit accounts is that you can use these accounts continuously throughout your project and they remain open and available after your project is completed. HELOCS provide the option to advance only the funds you need during specific stages of the project, thus saving on interest costs. They do require a full credit application, so income verification is required for approval and debt service ratios are taken into account when it comes to the limit approved. As a bonus, the revolving credit accounts remains open after you have paid it off and can be used in the future to finance other projects without having to reapply for

the credit limit. Choose your lender wisely as some lenders provide more advanced options for their HELOCS then others, for example, auto-limit increases and the ability to convert owing balances into instalment loans, such as mortgages, without cost. These advanced options provide long term solutions and can save you on interest and fees in the long run while providing additional lending options for your future projects and financial goals. One thing to consider when using a HELOC is they require the borrower to be disciplined as the minimum payment is typically “interest only”. A borrower must pay more then the minimum payment on their statements to begin paying down the principal balance.

or retired individuals looking for funds for renovations, mortgages can be approved based on home equity alone. Reverse Mortgages are an example of equity approved mortgages that allow you to access 45% -59% of your home’s equity at a fair rate with no monthly payments and minimum income requirements. With all the options out there, it is prudent to work with a Mortgage Agent who has access to, and knowledge of, all lending solutions so they can provide you with a plan for your specific needs and goals.

I

Mortgage Refinancing is another way to tap into the equity in your home for a renovation project. There are different types of mortgages, all with unique features that need to be considered. Mortgages have fixed or variable payments, a designated end date and repayment is spread over a long time period so monthly costs can be low. Mortgages do have same set up costs as HELOCS, however, for low income

Food4Kids Brant-Haldimand

F

ood4Kids Brant-Haldimand was developed to address food insecurity affecting children in our community. Our goal is to provide a safety net for children who are experiencing poor access to food on a consistent basis. Not only does fighting food insecurity provide a more comfortable and healthy childhood, but it can also set up the potential for a better future. 1 in 9 households are dealing with food insecurity and many of these families suffer in silence and are unsure where to turn. Food4Kids does more than talk about child hunger and poverty, we developed an impactful program that makes a significant difference in the lives of children in Brant-Haldimand region. While it is challenging to eliminate food insecurity, we are on track to ensuring that no child in our community goes without food.

up and relieve the stress that providing food for their children can cause when they are facing access and availability barriers.

Food4Kids has been serving BrantHaldimand since January 2017. We provide families with a $10 grocery gift card per child on a bi-weekly basis. Our program runs 52 weeks a year, including weekends and holidays. We have grown from 50 children in 2017 to 94 children in 2022, including 31 families and from 3 schools in 2017, to 23 schools being served in 2022. Dignity of our families is important to us, so we are dedicated to serving our community in a discreet and inclusive manner. Our goal is to lift these families

When children receive reliable access to food, they receive more than just nourishment. They also receive the ability to focus more easily in class, exercise and play more comfortably, and to feel more secure, causing a positive effect on mental health. Child hunger is a community responsibility. By working together, we can establish a community that helps those in need. Collaboration with community partners, volunteers, schools, and donors is important to us.
