"Flooding is a natural phenomena that occurs in numerous geographical locations, including Ohio. Since the state’s inception it has experienced some historic flooding, most importantly the Great Flood of 1913 — the greatest natural disaster in Ohio’s history. I utilized archival images from that time to influence my contribution to this exhibition."

"I continue to work in the theme of the moment when two places exist. In these pieces, I am thinking about my attachment to the place where I am from and the life that I have spent in other locations. I have included some imagery and symbolism that attach me to my home in Ohio. I've included flowers native to Ohio, that I have enjoyed as I have gotten acquainted with the outdoors in the area. I included the image of a ring that my partner gave to me while in Ohio. I also included a swimming cap, a personal image for me that I connect with swimming while in Ohio. These are all small "easter eggs" of personal symbolism that I have included for the works in this show."

The paintings that I have in this exhibition are from my travels and experiences in the state of Ohio and range from the north, in Lake Erie and Johnson's Island, in the south the Ohio River, and in between in Holmes, Madison and Franklin Counties with their rural and urban themes."

"Both of the 'Cottage
Interior'
paintings show the upstairs space in our family cottage. I've always been interested in painting here because of the historic feel of these spaces. The piece titled 'Home' depicts a house I walk by almost daily. I was interested in capturing the late day sunlight and how it creates deep shadows and brilliant color."

"Laundry drying in the breeze mimics the autumn leaves as both sway and whip with each swell. Sunlight illuminates the pastel sheets and plays across the grass. Red and yellow umbrellas glint in the sun as diners enjoy a meal in the shade they cast. Harmony of color and movement add a feeling of excitement to this Short North, Columbus piece. Friendly chickens present a comedic dinnertime dance. Fluid strokes of paint capture their sinuous movements as they poke and peck around each other for each fallen grain."

"My first plein air painting experience in Ohio was along the Olentangy River. There I discovered a trove of ocean floor fossils 450 million years old. The history of the land became an inspiration for me: the glacial moraine, the Great Black Swamp, the deposits of blue shale, the White Oak forests, the mounds of the first peoples, the farmers, and the urban dwellers. With Thoreau’s help my looking and seeing generate surreal images of the land and its inhabitants."
