TALLE BAMAZI
Talle Bamazi’s work creates ties between traditional and contemporary African art. The calabash, a large, woody gourd, is an important and recurring symbol in Bamazi’s work. The calabash is an African symbol for sustenance, hospitality, and fertility and is highly revered culturally for its nourishment and reliability. Beyond the edible fruit, the dried and hallowed calabash abounds with pragmatic purposes-for serving or storing food, acting as a vessel, or crafting ritual regalia. Bamazi depicts the calabash ethereally floating in the pictorial space. It is profound in both its simplicity and significance. In this way, the calabash becomes a symbol of mythological and proverbial interpretation.

Jason Morgan’s contemporary still-life paintings verge on magical realism, often using allegory to convey the mysteriousness of everyday life. With a talent for connecting seemingly unrelated objects, his vivid, colorful paintings play on the element of surprise. He presents disparate inanimate objects in ways that entice viewers to gaze deeper into the whimsical, alwaysmysterious worlds he creates. Alone, the objects seem ordinary or simply nostalgic. Bernard Palchick has always relied on, and has taken great joy from, the direct observation of nature and the celebration of beauty found in the smallest of details. Ideas about myth and ritual serve as a core concept of the often symbolic imagery in his paintings. The objects Palchick chooses, along with the odd juxtapositions of those objects, are attempts to joyfully answer questions about the magic of things-trees, rocks, string, marbles, animals, mountains, clouds. Palchick believes personal myths and rituals enable us to achieve comfort with and some control of the mysteries we discover in our lives. He wants his paintings to draw the observer into the world of the painting to discover the magical beauty in the details and to invent their own myths and rituals suggested by the imagery.

SUGGESTION,
As an artistic style, using symbolic imagery and indirect suggestion has been prolifically used by artists and varying cultures to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. The use of symbols allows an artist to express meaning in an indirect manner and conveys beyond what the viewer sees on the surface. The artist begins with a concept in mind and then consciously uses symbolic imagery, often developing their own visual vocabulary, one where forms, lines, shapes, and colors are intentionally emphasized. Ultimately, symbolism represents a synthesis of form and feeling via the artist’s inner subjectivity. The three artists featured in this exhibition, Talle Bamazi, Jason Morgan, and Bernard Palchick, all employ the use of symbolic imagery in their work using various methods.
