AMID THE GREENS In this new body of work, Cody Heichel has gravitated to a more distilled, yet figurative, landscape while exploring new color relationships. He has chosen to simplify his subject matter through composition and technique by omitting fine details. The simplicity is deceptive as Heichel attempts to elicit the essence of the subject into the final painting. By imbuing the materiality of his paint with the unique light of the Midwest, he attempts to have the viewer experience the landscape by feeling and suggestion rather than detail. These largely tonal paintings involve harmonizing or unifying color in terms of the overall light or atmosphere of the work. Heichel uses a somewhat limited palette, relying more on value, temperature, and subtle hues than on chroma or high-key color. By applying an overall tone, he is able to evoke a sense of emotionalism over realism. This distillation of both palette and composition is not simply a reductionist technique, but a genuine search for a redescription of his subject, allowing for a subjective interpretation of nature. These predominantly small-scale works are the result of the past year in which Heichel found himself (like many) confined largely to his home and studio. Turning to his surrounding landscape and environment, he focused on what may have been overlooked in the past: a lone house, an empty chair, a barren tree. Within this pared-down existence, the paintings began to shift to focus on the essential qualities of shape and tone, and less about the details of the specific subject matter.

“I aimed to distill any given motif down to only the shapes and components which seemed to be most important and meaningful to me. In doing so, I was able to shift my interest for fine details towards those of the paint application itself, and away from the minutiae of the scene. This also opened me up to allowing for my brushwork to become more interpretive, even abstracted, at times. Through this process, my painting practice became almost meditative or daydream like.” - CODY HEICHEL
