District eyes dropping Chavez
BY ADRIANA HERNANDEZ Daily Post Staff Writer
Ravenswood School District officials in East Palo Alto are looking to remove labor leader Cesar Chavez’s name from its middle school after allegations that he raped and sexually abused women involved in the farmworker’s movement.
Superintendent Gina Sudaria said

“As we move forward, we are committed to a process that is transparent, inclusive and reflective of our community,” Sudaria said.

Chavez, who died in 1993, allegedly sexually abused and raped girls and the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America union, Dolores Huerta. Huerta has said that she was raped twice by Chavez, and both incidents

Councilwoman done after two terms
BY ADRIANA HERNANDEZ Daily Post Staff Writer
Menlo Park Mayor Betsy Nash will not seek re-election, while a new face has launched a campaign vying for Nash’s seat.
“I’ve been working on the district and city issues for two terms and now it’s time for someone new to step in and push that ball forward,” Nash told the Post yesterday.
Nash said she decided not to run for a third term while she was still running for a second.
Nash said several people have reached out to her, expressing interest in running for her seat to represent District 4, which is mostly west of El Camino Real, including the Allied Arts neighborhood. One of those people was Charlotte Reed.
First candidate in race emerges
Fresh face
Reed, 31, is the first candidate to join the race, competing for one of the three open seats in November.
Reed said she was inspired to run after hearing how divided the community was in January 2024 over plans to redevelop three downtown parking lots into subsidized housing.
Reed is in favor of the downtown housing. She said it is essential for meeting the state’s housing requirements and to fend off additional proposals like the 40-story tower planned for the former Sunset Magazine offices at 80 Willow Road.
Reed said council could have done a
better job of informing residents about the plans for the downtown parking lots so residents could have given more feedback before the city locked in plans with the state.
Even if residents do not agree with her views, Reed said she wants them to feel comfortable voicing their opinions to her.
Wants to rebuild trust
One of Reed’s main goals will be to rebuild trust within the community. If she is elected, she wants to propose creating a downtown-focused commission where residents will have more opportunities to voice their opinions, Reed said.
“Only having two minutes to give public comment on issues related to downtown isn’t enough,” Reed said.
Reed moved to Menlo Park two years
ago and started working at the Junior League, a nonprofit focused on volunteering and advancing women’s leadership. She graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor’s degree in public relations.
Reed currently works in communications at Klaviyo, an AI marketing company. She was a two-time Grammy nominee in 2021 and 2025. Reed now sings for two choirs, the Peninusla Chorale and the St. Raymond Catholic Church in Menlo Park.
The November ballot will include candidates for districts 1 and 2. Councilman Drew Combs, who represents District 2, said he plans decide next month if he will run. Councilwoman Cecilia Taylor, who represents District 1, did not respond to the Post’s inquiry as to whether she will run. All three council members, Nash, Taylor and Combs, are serving their second terms. Menlo Park does not have term limits.

School board fills open trustee seat
BY STEPHANIE LAM Daily Post Correspondent
The Los Altos School District yesterday unanimously voted in Brandon Stroy to replace former trustee Vladimir Ivanovic, who resigned on Jan. 12 in protest over the district’s plan to build a new campus for Bullis charter school.
STROY
Ivanovic’s last day as a trustee was March 11. Stroy will finish out the rest of Ivanovic’s term, which ends in December.
“I’m grateful to the board for their consideration and confidence and I look forward to getting into the weeds so that I can engage in thoughtful discussion and debate regarding the important issues relating to the education of our children,” Stroy said in a statement to the Post.
Election battle to come
Stroy, an attorney at Nixon Peabody LLP in San Francisco, beat out three other contenders — Rachel Henke, David Poll and Sarah Weitz — for the chance to replace Ivanovic.
During yesterday’s trustee meeting,

all the candidates said they plan to run in the board’s November election to fill Stroy, Bryan Johnson and president Vaishali Sirkay’s seat. The remaining board members — Jim Malone and Stella Kim — finish their terms in December 2028.
Resignation reasoning
Ivanovic previously told the Post his resignation stemmed from his disapproval over the district building Bullis on the “10th site,” a 11.7-acre property the district purchased for $155 million in 2019 to build a new campus. The area houses part of the San Antonio Shopping Center at 2550 W. El Camino Real.
More about Stroy
Stroy is president of Blach Jr. High PTA, and previously served as the president of the Springer Elementary PTA for four years.
Stroy said his first order of business after joining the board is to “listen and learn to understand how the board operates, get an understanding of the budget, and get acquainted with the current issues that are under review by the board.”

Bullis wins ruling in race quota suit
BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
Bullis Charter School in Los Altos has scored a victory in its legal battle over whether the Santa Clara County Board of Education has imposed racial quotas at the expense of Asian students.
Bullis reasonably alleged that the Board of Education has treated other charter schools differently and required Bullis to achieve a specific racial balance, United States Magistrate Judge Virginia DeMarchi said in a March 13 decision.
“Accordingly, the court concludes that the (Bullis lawsuit) states a plausible claim for disparate treatment based on race,” DeMarchi said.
Charter renewal demand
The federal case stems from the Board of Education’s 4-3 vote on Aug. 26, 2024, to renew Bullis Charter School for another five years — with the condition that Bullis develop a plan to “increase its enrollment of historically underserved student groups.”
Former board member Grace Mah, who represented northern Santa Clara County, voted to renew the charter unconditionally.
“Targets and metrics are kind of like quotas,” Mah said at the meeting.
But the majority required Bullis to detail its demographics, targets for each year and ways to measure progress.
Bullis attorney Lee Rosenberg said the Board of Education is trying to reduce the number of Asian students at Bullis and increase the number of Latino students. Bullis is open to any student who wants to attend through a random lottery, Rosenberg said.
The county board is “insisting that BCS achieve de facto ‘racial quotas,’ but conveniently resist calling them that in light of the illegality of the term,” Rosenberg said in the lawsuit.
Bullis has 62% Asian students, 17% white students and 5% Hispanic students. In comparison, the Los Altos School District is 40% Asian, 36% white and 10% Hispanic, the suit said.
Enrollment criticism
Bullis has been criticized for allegedly serving wealthier families while leaving low-income and special needs students to attend public schools.
Los Altos Superintendent Sandra McGonagle said in September 2024 that three special needs students were bullied at Bullis and offered education plans that didn’t meet their needs.
Bullis Superintendent Maureen Israel told the Board of Education that she’s been trying to recruit different kinds of students by hiring a bilingual outreach director and creating a preference in the enrollment lottery for low-income students.
The low-income preference is capped at 10% of students who enter the lottery each year, Israel said.
The Board of Education made Bullis sign an agreement with the county board to remove the 10% cap. Bullis signed the agreement under protest, and then filed its lawsuit.
DeMarchi dismissed the lawsuit in July 2025 but allowed Bullis to update its allegations. Last week’s ruling against the Board of Education’s motion to dismiss the case allows Bullis to move forward, with another hearing scheduled on April 21.

Record of man falsely accused gets cleared
BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
A judge has expunged the record of a man who was falsely accused of inappropriately touching a 7-year-old boy in a downtown Palo Alto parking lot, a prosecutor said.
Joshua Keenan Brass, 31, of East Palo Alto, spent four months in jail because of the false accusation, Deputy Public Defender Tom Cummins said in a motion to declare his innocence.
Brass was accused by the boy’s mother, Yansy Garrido Aguilar, who wanted a larger police response to a stolen wallet, Cummins said.
“When the police get here, I want you to tell them a man was in the car and stole your dad's money. Tell them he touched your huevos and grabbed your chile,” Garrido Aguilar allegedly told her 7-year-old son.
The alleged crime happened around
12:45 a.m. on Sept. 13, 2024, when Garrido Aguilar and her boyfriend were cleaning four downtown restaurants.
Arrest record destroyed
Brass told Officer Yolanda Franco-Clausen that he took a wallet from the car, but he didn’t see the kids in the back seat.
Brass was booked on suspicion of six felonies, including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and sexually assaulting a minor.
Garrido Aguilar’s boyfriend told police on Dec. 26, 2024, that Garrido Aguilar was upset about losing $200 in the wallet and said police wouldn’t have done anything if she didn’t make up the touching, the boyfriend said.
Judge Kelley Paul agreed to declare Brass innocent and destroy his arrest record on Feb. 25, Deputy District Attorney Nik Warrior said on Wednesday.
Dear Vanessa,
My mom lives with Lewy body dementia. Some days when I visit, she’s warm, talkative, and fully herself. Other days, my brother tells me she was withdrawn or irritable. I can’t help but wonder- did something go wrong during the visit with my brother? Did someone do something differently?
— Miki
Dear Miki,
This is one of the most commonand one of the most painfulquestions families ask.
Let me start here: most likely, nothing your brother did was wrong.
Lewy body dementia does not move in a straight line. It does not gently decline day by day. Instead, it fluctuates- sometimes dramatically- between moments of clarity and moments of abrupt disruption. These changes can feel sudden and even shocking, especially when a “good day” is followed closely by a difficult one.
What’s happening is not emotional. It is neurologically driven.
In Lewy body dementia, abnormal protein deposits interfere with the brain’s chemical messengers- the signals responsible for attention, alertness, mood, and emotional regulation. On some days, those signals flow more smoothly. On other days, they falter. When the brain has enough capacity, your loved one can connect, converse, smile, and engage. When it doesn’t, they may appear distant, flat, irritable, or overwhelmed. These shifts can happen within hourssometimes even minutes.
This is why, in my work, I often help families realign their expectations and gently move them away from comparing visits or caregivers. Comparison invites blame, and blame is not only unproductive- it reflects a misunderstanding of the disease itself. No one is doing something “more right” or “more wrong.” The difference lies in the brain’s capacity at that moment.
Comparisons are tempting, but they are deeply misleading. A good visit does not mean the disease has improved- or that someone is more favored. A difficult visit does not mean
Even when your loved one cannot respond,
poor care or lack of skill. Both experiences are real. And both belong to the same condition.
What often follows these fluctuations is guilt. Caregivers wonder if they failed. Families wonder why they didn’t see the same version of their loved one. Quietly, everyone begins carrying emotional weight that does not belong to them.
Understanding the nature of Lewy body dementia allows us to release that weight. When we recognize that behavior reflects brain state, not effort or affection, something softens. Care becomes less about performance and more about presence. The question shifts from “Why wasn’t she like this for me?” to “What did her brain allow today?”
And here is the most important truth I want families and caregivers to hear: Even when your loved one cannot respond, connect, or recognize you the way they once did, your care still matters. The nervous system still senses calm. The body still registers gentleness. Safety, reassurance, and compassion are felt- even when they cannot be reflected back. In Lewy body dementia, consistency does not live in behavior. It lives in how we show up. When we understand this, guilt gives way to grace- and care becomes more supportive, more grounded, and more humane.
Warmly, Vanessa

Poll: Rising health costs strain many
Lately, Priscilla Brown has had to choose between properly managing her Type 2 diabetes and affording other necessities, like gas in her car. Some days, she takes half or a third of her prescribed insulin dose — just to stretch it out longer.
“Sometimes I don’t even take my medicine,” said the 48-year-old truck dispatcher in Orlando, Fla. “It’s so much with insurance, it’s crazy.”
Sticker shock
About 8 in 10 Americans, like Brown, who re-enrolled in Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage say their health care costs are higher this year, including about half who say their costs are “a lot” higher, according to a new survey from the health care research nonprofit KFF. A main reason for increased costs was the Dec. 31 expiration of enhanced tax credits that had offset premiums for most enrollees.
For Brown and others, those spiking costs are having real impacts on daily life. Of the 1,117 Americans surveyed who had ACA marketplace coverage
in 2025, including those who dropped coverage or changed plans, about 55% said they’re planning to deal with health care costs by cutting spending on food and other basic household needs.
Acute anxieties
Anxieties about unexpected medical costs are acute, the poll shows. About three-quarters of people who had ACA insurance last year now say they are “very” or “somewhat” worried about paying for emergency care or hospitalization, while about half said the same about routine medical visits or prescription drugs.
Most of last year’s enrollees, about 7 in 10, stayed on ACA health insurance — but that includes about 3 in 10 who changed plans within the marketplace. Meanwhile, about 2 in 10 became eligible for coverage through their employer, Medicare or Medicaid or purchased insurance outside of the ACA marketplace, which tends to be less comprehensive. About 1 in 10 of last year’s enrollees said they dropped coverage altogether, the poll shows.
New Wegovy shot OK’d
Federal regulators yesterday approved a new higher-dose version of the blockbuster obesity drug Wegovy that may help users lose more weight and keep it off.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a 7.2-milligram dose of Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide. Previously, the highest approved dose of the drug, taken as a weekly shot, was 2.4 milligrams.
The new dose received accelerated review through the FDA’s ultra-fast drug review program. The approval was granted 54 days
after the request for review was approved, the agency said in a statement.
The new dosage will be available in April at pharmacies in the U.S., with a price to be announced then, according to the company. European drug regulators approved the higher-dose version of Wegovy in February.
Study results
Called Wegovy HD, the higher-dose drug helped participants in a study lose about 19% of their body weight, or almost 47 pounds,
versus about 16% of body weight, or 39 pounds with the lower dose over almost 17 months.
The higher dose was developed because while the 2.4-milligram shot is effective, “some individuals do not reach their therapeutic goals” at that dose, according to results published last year in the medical journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
The FDA in December approved an oral Wegovy pill. It contains 25 milligrams of semaglutide, the amount needed to ensure it is absorbed via the digestive system.

Entertainment Fashion meets film in new Coppola doc
Neither Sofia Coppola nor Marc Jacobs were convinced a documentary was a good idea. Jacobs wasn’t sure he wanted to be the subject of one and Coppola wasn’t sure she wanted the pressure of being the person behind the camera. This was her friend of over 30 years, after all. What if the film wasn’t good?
Yet the idea, which they credit to producers R.J. and Jane Cha Cutler, started to take hold. Coppola has always been interested in fashion and the creative process. Jacobs knew that if anyone could make him feel less self-conscious, it would be her. And they decided to jump into the unknown. At least it would be together.
“There was no off limits,” Jacobs said in an interview, alongside Coppola, with The Associated Press before the Venice Film Festival in September. “It was just like come as you are and you get what you get and that’s the way it’s going to be.”
“Marc, by Sofia,” which opens in theaters today, is an evocative, and very Coppola, collage of Jacobs’ influences, his biography and his team at work putting together a ready-to-wear collection.
Creating ‘Marc, by Sofia’ It was a very lo-fi production, they said. Sometimes it would just be Coppola coming into the office with her own handheld camera. Sometimes her brother Roman Coppola would come
to help. Coppola had never done a feature length documentary before and found the process exciting, though she said it’s not signaling a new phase or direction for her as a filmmaker.
She also got to see some of the behind the scenes things she’s rarely privy to, including being backstage at a runway show.
“I had total freedom, which was great. I was just filming what interested me,” she said. “It was really the same as like taking snapshots, which wasn’t unfamiliar to me.”
The two met in the early 1990s in New York, when Coppola asked her

mother if she could go see the Perry Ellis show that Jacobs was working on. They quickly hit it off, bonding over shared loves of art, music, fashion and movies. Jacobs has visited her film sets and even provided clothes for some of her characters.
Showing Jacobs’ influences
In addition to the behind the scenes of designing the Spring 2024 ready-towear collection, “Marc by Sofia” is full of film and art references, with clips from “Hello, Dolly!” “All that Jazz,” “Sweet Charity” and many more of Jacobs’ most beloved films. He was par-
ticularly blown away that she was able to get the rights to use the clips.
“It made me feel very special. And I couldn’t imagine all those things coming through for just anyone,” Jacobs said. “I felt like it was OK because it was for Sofia. That may not be the truth, but that’s the way I like to think of it.”
It also includes some biography, big career moments, and some rare glimpses of Jacobs’ grandmother, an influential figure in his life who he lived with as a teen in New York and who instilled in him the importance of caring for beautiful clothes.
After the runway show, Coppola and her brother visit Jacobs at his home where, in his silk pajamas, he discusses his comedown. He likes to borrow a phrase coined by his friend, filmmaker Lana Wachowski, to describe the feeling: Post-art-um.
Screening jitters
Still, Jacobs was nervous the first time she screened it for him. He worried about what he was going to look like, sound like and what it was going to be.
“In very typical me fashion, when it was over I said I don’t hate myself after seeing it,” Jacobs laughed. “I just thought it all felt natural. I wasn’t pretending. There was just nothing synthetic or false or anything. So whether people like it or not, I know that I just felt good about me being me and Sofia, you know, sort of seeing that her way.”

ABC axes season of ‘Bachelorette’
ABC has scrubbed the upcoming season of “The Bachelorette,” starring Taylor Frankie Paul, three days before its planned premiere, citing a newly released video from 2023 in which she appears to punch, kick and throw chairs at her former partner as her young daughter watched and cried.
throwing three chairs at him while repeatedly screaming “You did this!”
Yesterday’s cancellation of the already filmed 22nd season of the reality show is unprecedented. While ABC parent company Disney cited the older video, the move comes amid a current domestic violence investigation involving Paul and Dakota Mortensen, father to a son who is the youngest of her three children.
“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of ‘The Bachelorette’ at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” a statement from Disney Entertainment Television said.
Inside the footage
In the 2023 video published by TMZ yesterday, Mortensen is apparently trying to stave off Paul with one hand one while he shoots phone video. She is shown punching him, kicking him then
“The only thing you know how to do is hurt me,” Mortensen says, while repeatedly pleading with Paul and reminding her that her daughter was watching. A child can be heard sobbing, screaming and shouting “mommy!” Paul’s daughter would have been about 5 at the time.
The video was consistent with Paul’s arrest in 2023, when she was charged with aggravated assault and other offenses, including domestic violence in the presence of a child. She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge; the other counts were dismissed.
Statement from Paul
A spokesman for Paul said in a statement yesterday that she is “very grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security. After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.”
Before her “Bachelorette” casting, Paul had already become a reality star through “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” whose production is paused.

Val
Kilmer for role
A year after the actor’s death, a generative AI version of Val Kilmer will co-star in an independent film, in one of the boldest uses yet of artificial intelligence in moviemaking.
First Line Films announced Wednesday that Kilmer has posthumously joined the cast of a film titled “As Deep as the Grave.” The producers said that, before his death, Kilmer had signed on to perform in the movie but was unable to because of his health.
Estate approves move
Kilmer’s estate gave permission for his digital replication, and is being compensated for it. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, said the role resonated with her father.
“He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling,” she said in a statement. “This spirit is something that we are all honoring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part.”
Kilmer died last April at the age of 65 from pneumonia. In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer and required two tracheotomies. After losing his natural speaking voice, Kilmer
turned to an AI software company to digital recreate his voice. In his final screen performance, 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kilmer’s voice was digitally altered.
The use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking has been one of the most contentious topics in Hollywood in recent years. Lately, some have attempted to make greater inroads for AI-generated performance. The company Xicoia last year launched the AI-concocted persona “Tilly Norwood”; earlier this month, it debuted a music video.
Actors union guidelines
SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, has condemned Xicoia’s “AI actor,” but it has regulations around other uses of the technology. Its rules stipulate that consent from performers must be given for the use of digital replicas. “Consent not obtained before death must be obtained from an authorized representative or the union,” reads its guidance.
Representatives for SAG-AFTRA didn’t immediately respond to questions.
In an email, writer-director Coerte Voorhees and producer John Voorhees said SAG guidelines were followed.
“We believe we are serving as a demonstrator for how to do it ethically and correctly,” they said.

Town will enforce false alarm fines
BY ADRIANA HERNANDEZ Daily Post Staff Writer
Atherton City Council has decided to punish residents who aren’t paying their fines when police respond to homes where a burglar alarm is going off, but there’s no evidence of a breakin.
Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to impose an additional fee on residents who haven’t paid their tickets.
If residents still do not pay, the amount will go to collections, which could result in a lien on their property.
Crackdown effort
Council decided on Wednesday to enforce false burglar alarm fees after a total of $4,600 in fees went unpaid in 2025.
Residents will receive two warnings before an additional fee is added. Council will decide the amount of the additional fee at a future meeting.
Councilman Bill Widmer suggested that the police should leave a ticket on homeowners’ cars when it’s a false alarm. Police Commander Dan Larsen said they would have to reconfigure their website if police were handing out tickets.
Councilwoman Elizabeth Lewis said the fees should not be very pu-
nitive because some alarms go off by accident.
Larsen said there are occasions when a spider or a bug has set off alarms.
Atherton police monitors alarms for 1,534 residents and there were 664 false alarms last year out of 1,246, according to Police Chief Steven McCulley. To help reduce false alarms, the town imposed a penalty fee for repeat false alarm responses in 2018.
Penalty structure
For every alarm, dispatchers tell officers to go to the scene. When it’s a false alarm, it adds to officers’ workload and affects service equity among residents, according to McCulley. Residents are charged $400 after the fourth false alarm. After that, the fees rise by $100 before capping at $600 after the sixth false alarm.
A total of $9,800 in fines was issued in 2025 to 26 residents, according to McCulley. Of those 26 residents, six who were fined for their sixth false alarm have not paid. Four residents with penalties of a fifth false alarm and 12 for their fourth false alarm haven’t paid as well.
Atherton residents pay a $100 onetime fee to allow police to monitor their alarms and $50 annual fee to monitor the alarms.

resulted in children. In cities including San Francisco, San Jose, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Portland, and Albuquerque officials said they would look at renaming landmarks such as buildings, streets and schools.
East Palo Alto Mayor Webster Lincoln sent a letter to the board on Wednesday suggesting that the school be renamed Barack Obama Middle School.
“This request is not about erasing the history of the farmworker movement or diminishing the real and lasting gains that movement delivered for working families. This is about the values we affirm each day when we name a school,” Lincoln said in his letter.
The middle school was renamed Cesar Chavez Ravenswood Middle School in 2019. The name of the late labor leader was nearly dropped after the district consolidated its middle schools onto the campus of Cesar Chavez Academy at 2450 Ralmar Ave.
Curriculum change
Chavez has been portrayed as a civil rights hero in schools, but now the curriculum will change.
Ravenswood teachers will still teach about the farmworker movement as a struggle, but will minimize Chavez’s role, Sudaria said.
This change will be implemented across other schools as the state updates its history and social studies curriculum for all K-12 public schools. Students learn about Chavez and the United Farmworkers’ Union in fourth, ninth and eleventh grade, according to state guidelines.
It’s not just Ravenswood taking another look at its curriculum. State education officials on Wednesday urged teachers to minimize Chavez when teaching about the farm labor movement, CalMatters reports.
That means the state will be updating its 800-page curriculum for history and social studies lessons for all K-12 public school students.
Officials in various cities are also moving to rename Cesar Chavez Day, a federal holiday on March 31, his birthday.
Ravenswood isn’t changing the name of Cesar Chavez Day this year, but plans to rename it in coming years, according to Sudaria. The district observes the holiday on the first day of its spring break, which this year falls on April 6.
tu yesterday. The board met privately for two hours and 15 minutes and approved Espiritu’s appointment on a 5-0 vote.
“With this action, the board has expressed its intent to discuss searching for and hiring an interim,” board president Shounak Dharap said. “The timebound nature of the action also shows an intent to move speedily.”
When the Post asked to speak with Espiritu after his appointment, district spokewoman Lynette White responded that Espiritu would issue a statement. No statement was issued yesterday.
Espiritu’s background
Espiritu was a principal in San Jose until July 2022, when he was hired in Palo Alto as director of student services. He’s been in his current role managing HR for teachers for the last two years and makes $229,217 plus benefits, pay records show.
Tom Culbertson, president of the teachers’ union, said he’s had a positive and productive relationship with Espiritu.
“This is a huge step for Herb, and he will do everything possible to do what’s right for students, educators and the community,” Culbertson said.
Supe for a month Espiritu will be acting superintendent until April 21 or until the board brings in an interim superintendent, whichever comes first, Dharap said.
“Herb is very well respected in the district, both among administrators, among families, clearly among the board and our teachers and classified staff,” Dharap said on a phone call.
The district and its unions are in the middle of tense negotiations over a new contract.
The district in February offered a 2% raise, while the teachers’ union had requested 13%, plus benefits.
Meanwhile, the union for non-teachers asked for an 11% raise this year and 8% raise next year.
Former Superintendent Don Austin said proposals amounted to 28% for teachers and 47% for non-teachers when other benefits and compensation were factored in.
Last two supes paid to leave
The board agreed to pay Austin $596,802 on Feb. 20 and acting Superintendent Trent Bahadursingh $346,673 on Tuesday in exchange for their resignations.
Teens sue Musk over explicit AI images
Three teenagers in Tennessee sued Elon Musk’s xAI this week, claiming the company’s image-generation tools were used to morph real photos of them into explicitly sexual images.
The high school students, who are seeking to proceed under pseudonyms, filed the lawsuit in California, where xAI — Musk’s artificial intelligence company — has its headquarters. They are seeking class-action status in order to represent what the lawsuit says are thousands of victims like themselves who either are minors or were minors when sexually explicit images of them were created.
According to the lawsuit, Jane Doe 1 was alerted anonymously in December that someone was distributing sexually explicit images of her on a social media website.
“At least five of these files, one video and four images, depicted her actual face and body in settings with which she was familiar, but morphed into sexually explicit poses,” the lawsuit states. It claims the person distributing the images knew Doe and used xAI’s image generation tools to turn real photos of her into sexually

along the sides. But council members on the committee said a painted bike lane could lead to speeding cyclists and uneasy pedestrians, and City Manager Ed Shikada agreed.
Councilman Keith Reckdahl said if the space is wide enough, then cyclists and pedestrians can naturally wind around each other, like on the Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View.
‘Basically empty’
Councilman George Lu said he wants to allow bikes because Cal Ave. is “basically empty” most of the day, and reckless teenagers on e-bikes
abusive ones. One of the images was taken from a homecoming photo. Another was taken from a high school yearbook.
The person distributing the images also created explicit images of at least 18 other girls, two of whom are co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit. In late December, local police arrested the perpetrator and confiscated his phone. They found that he had uploaded the images to several platforms where he traded them for sexually explicit images of other minors.
Other AI companies have prohibited their image-generators from producing any sexually explicit content, even of adults. Musk saw this as a business opportunity and promoted the ability of xAI’s Grok chatbot to create “spicy” content, the lawsuit claims. However, there is currently no way to prevent the generation of explicit images of adults while completely blocking the generation of images of children, the lawsuit claims. It also claims that xAI knew Grok would be able to produce sexually explicit images of children but released it anyway.
would use the street regardless of the rules.
“Restricting bikes from an otherwise empty street is not going to be that successful or protective of businesses or pedestrians,” Lu said. “But there might need to be a much longer conversation of how this bike lane is actually implemented.”
Fukuji said Cal Ave. can be redesigned to slow cyclists down by making them change directions. For example, he said the city could put a bike roundabout at the intersection of Ash Street.
“Maybe there needs to be some experiments,” Fukuji said. “Try different things out before coming up with a final decision about that, see how people’s behavior adapts.”
