Judge halts ICE arrests at courts A federal judge has granted a stay on ICE arrests at Bay Area courthouses. District Judge Casey Pitts issued the order Wednesday as the result of a class-action lawsuit filed in September. Many of those arrested were checking in, as they had been required to do because they were foreign nationals. Judge Pitts wrote that the possibility of being arrested by ICE at court hearings, he wrote in his ruling, forces non-

citizens appearing in court to choose between “two irreparable harms.” They might skip their court appearance to evade arrest by ICE, but that would have a detrimental impact on their immigration case, putting their future in the United States at risk. The case isn’t over, however. Often decisions by district judges against the Trump administration are overturned by a court of appeals or Supreme Court.

Immigrant truckers sue DMV

A group of illegal immigrant truckers has sued California’s DMV, alleging the state violated thousands of workers’ rights when officials took action to revoke their commercial driver’s licenses. California officials said last month that the state notified about 17,000 truckers that their commercial driver’s licenses would be revoked because the expiration dates went past when the drivers were legally allowed to be in the U.S. That number has since grown to 21,000.

Concerns about illegal immigrant truck drivers gained attention after a tractor-trailer driver made an illegal U-turn and caused an August crash in Florida that killed three people. A fiery California crash that also killed three people in October and involved a truck driver in the country illegally added to the worries. After the high-profile crashes, the Trump administration started cracking down on states’ issuance of the licenses to illegal immigrants.

Heavy rains and strong winds from powerful winter storms brought the wettest Christmas season to Southern California in years, triggering widespread mudslides and debris flows and leaving homes halfway filled with mud. Rain eased in Los Angeles yesterday afternoon, but there was still a risk of more flash flooding and mudslides, the National Weather Service warned. “It’s not going to take a whole lot to create some hazards on the highways,” said Mike Wofford, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Los Angeles. “Still not quite out of the woods, but for the most part, the worst is over.” Helicopter rescues people Firefighters rescued over 100 people Thursday in Los Angeles County, with one helicopter pulling 21 people from stranded cars, officials said. LA police also responded to more than 350 traffic collisions, the mayor’s office said.

Yesterday, cars were still buried up to their windows in rocks, debris and thick mud. Fire officials pulled several people from trapped cars earlier this week when mud and debris cascaded down a road into town. There was one injury. The system brought the wettest Christmas season to downtown Los Angeles in 54 years. The area recorded 3 inches of rain in three days, while the mountain areas saw up to 12 inches. Forecasters expected a dry weekend before more rains were forecast to come next week around New Year’s Eve.

Kids lie fairly often – to avoid a spanking or a “look” from their parents. They learn early on that if you sprinkle the lie with a little truth, the lie will be accepted as truth. Politicians, let’s call them public servants – a term yet to be fully accepted or understood by many of them – know too this childish but effective way of scamming the public. You can fool people if they trust you. The faulty thinking, of course, is that once trust is broken, it’s impossible to be reestablished. My thesaurus lists more than 20 synonyms for lying, all designed to costume the black heart of the deed and its author. Proposition 19 was presented as a half-truth, by definition, a lie: The Home Protection for Seniors, Severely Disabled, Families, and Victims of Wildfire or Natural Disasters Act – Where’s the rest of it? You know, the part that says immediately upon your death, your property will be reassessed at its present value and the taxes will be immediately due. Oh, you forgot to say that, right? With all the editing on the ballot, the filters, the checks and balances, you forgot to say that? Why question this harmless little omission? Because this omission was a lie that crippled thousands of Californians, a lie that created a new unexpected tax which the heirs were unable to pay and caused them to walk away from their inheritance. You know, the part that says that when you die, your children will get a sympathy card and, in most cases, a tax bill they can’t pay. Ok, sell the family home and walk away. Even the most eagle-eyed, studious voter would not have spotted this fault in the proposition. He must have looked at the title and read all the good that this proposition was going to do for Californians: the old folks, the burned out folks (about 2% of Californians!), the firefighters (They got zero money!). Move at 55 and take your tax base (What retiree moves 3 times to a more expensive house? Useless!). The voter missed the most devastating impact of Proposition 19 because it wasn’t mentioned. It was omitted. It was a lie. We voted on a lie – a nonentity. As such, it doesn’t even rise to the level of a recall. IT SHOULD BE NULL AND VOID. IT IS A LIE ON ITS FACE. ★ I call on Rob, Gavin and Kevin to remain in our good graces, and point out this glaring error that “some people” made, targeting seniors and their heirs, and pronounce this as an insult to your integrity (too!) as public servants who may seek other offices in your careers, using your fine leadership examples. You will be remembered by other honest Californians! ★ Gentlemen, I know you will support our efforts as we deliver this letter to the U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, asking that this poorly-written, unbalanced, incomplete and misleading Proposition 19 be declared Null and Void, based on the aforementioned and the confusion among lawyers, judges and assessors who were sent scurrying in panic to protect hardworking citizens about to lose their efforts of a lifetime. President Trump has launched what he called a “powerful and deadly” strike against forces of ISIS in Nigeria, after spending weeks accusing the West African country’s government of failing to rein in the slaughter of Christians. An estimated 190,000 Christians have been murdered in Nigeria since 2009, according to human rights organizations. Trump said the airstrikes were launched against ISIS militants “who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians.” ISIS targets followers of many faiths Nigeria’s government has previously said in response to Trump’s criticisms that people of many faiths, not just Christians, have suffered attacks at the hands of extremist groups. Trump ordered the Pentagon last month to begin planning for potential military action in Nigeria to try and curb what he called Christian persecution. The State Department recently announced it would restrict visas for Nigerians and their family members involved in killing Christians there. Nigeria’s population of 220 million is split almost equally between Christians and Muslims. The country has long faced insecurity from various fronts, including Boko Haram, which seeks to establish its radical interpretation of Islamic law and has also targeted Muslims it deems not Muslim enough.

CSU to accept all high school grads next fall BY MIKHAIL ZINSHTEYN CalMatters

What’s good for Riverside County is good for the whole state: After a pilot to automatically admit high school students into the California State University system in the Inland Empire county took off last fall, lawmakers this year passed a law to greenlight a similar program statewide next fall. CSU leaders last year launched the pilot to attract more students to the university system and to steer some to campuses that have been struggling with enrollment declines. The pilot worked like this: University officials and high schools in Riverside County pored over student course completion and grade data to identify every county high school senior who was eligible for admission to the 10 of 22 Cal State campuses chosen for the pilot. Then the students received a brochure in the mail last fall before the Nov. 30 submission deadline, plus digital correspondence, telling them they were provisionally admitted as long as they submitted an application to one or more Cal State campuses, even those not in the pilot, and maintained their high school grades. Closing the gap Starting next fall, all students in California will be eligible for the automatic admissions program, which will expand the roster of participating Cal State campuses to 16. In justifying the expanded program during a legislative hearing, bill author Sen. Christopher Cabaldon, a Democrat from Napa, said college should be as seamless a transition from high school as it is for students finishing one grade and advancing to the next. “It’s entirely an invention of us, the gap between 12th grade and college. ... The same gap does not exist between elementary school and junior high or junior high and high school.”

Zuckerberg family The Palo Alto Police Foundation (PAPF) received a charitable donation from Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The Police Foundation was formed in 2022. The goal is to support the Palo Alto Police Department by funding important needs not covered by the City’s budget. The second goal is to strengthen trust and collaboration between the police department and the community. This past year, the Foundation held a community gathering at El Prado hotel with guest speakers being Palo Alto Mayor Ed Lauing and Police Chief Andrew Binder. Over 80 guests were at the event. The Foundation also held a grand opening tour of the new Public Safety Building at 250 Sherman Ave. Participants were intrigued by having an inside look into how the police department operates. We understand that other checks from the Zuckerberg family have been given this year to other charities in Palo Alto. We are blessed with having so many charities doing such great work in our town and helping other communities such as East Palo Alto. These hardworking charities are much appreciative of these additional funds. Thank you to the Zuckerberg family for starting Facebook now Meta in Palo Alto.
