Richard (Dick) Henning

April 6 1935 – February 4, 2026

Richard (Dick) Henning passed away on February 4, 2026; he was 90 years old.

Wow! Did he ever have a wonderful life!

Those who knew Dick grieve his passing but smile considering the long life he lived and how much he contributed to the enjoyment of his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Paulette Lajou Henning. Dick idolized Paulette, and she was adored by everyone she met, many commenting on her delightful French accent.

And in his marriage to Paulette, Dick gained a large, loving family, the Stouffers. Paulette’s son Eric and daughter Carine and 5 grandchildren: Tori, Caitlin, Meredith, Kyle and Maddi, their spouses and 13 great-grandchildren. He also had a son, Tom from a previous marriage. His children and grandchildren brought immense happiness to his life.

Dick was born in Pasadena, California; his parents were Charles Elmer Henning and Genevieve Marie. He had two brothers Bill and Bob (deceased).

He was raised in Taft, California, a small oil town 39 miles from Bakersfield. While devoid of some advantages of larger cities, the Taft school system was consistently one of the best in the state.

He was the first student in his class of 1953 to be inducted into the Taft High School Hall of Fame.

He began his career in 1960 at Sunnyvale High School as a teacher of English and Public Speaking and was the drama coach directing school plays. He was a gifted high school and college teacher who cared deeply about his students.

In 1967, he was hired as a full-time administrator and a sometimes professor of speech and English at Foothill College.

During the second year as Director of Student Activities, 1968, he lined up a series of speakers and in 1970 a series of rock groups for students and members of the community.

The speakers series, Foothill College Celebrity Forum, lasted 52 years until the Flint Center theater closed in 2020.

The Celebrity Forum was recognized by the prestigious International Platform Association as the “Best Speakers Series in the Nation.”

He was very active in the community and served as President of several non-profit organizations. He served for 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, was a founding Board Member of the Los Altos Sister Cities and President of the Rotary Club of Los Altos in 1971-72.

He has won many awards including the State of California Community Services Man of the Year, Los Altan of the Year, Los Altos Hill’s Gentry Magazine Community Star Award and the Palo Alto Avenidas Lifetime Award and Mountain View’s CSA’s 2016 Hometown Hero. He won the 45th annual Los Altos Community Services Award for outstanding service and volunteerism.

From 1984 to 2015, he led 25 safaris to Africa. His last safari was a celebration of his 80th birthday in Botswana with 20 friends, Paulette and Carine. Dick brought joy and laughter to the serious business of making the world a better place.

He will be deeply missed.

leaders and the “why” behind their work -

them, grounds them, and sustains their commitment to serving older adults.

What Leadership Looks Like When Care Comes First: Kristina Lugo’s Story

In an age obsessed with disruption and scale, we rarely pause to ask a quieter, more radical question: Who is actually holding our communities together?

Meet Kristina Lugo,President and CEO of Avenidas, an aging services organization that does far more than provide programs for older adults. Under her leadership, Avenidas has become a living answer to a question many of us will eventually face: What does it really mean to grow old with dignity, connection, and care?

Kristina’s story doesn’t begin in a boardroom; it begins with hands-on caregiving. As a child of six or seven, she cared for her great-aunt, who suffered from severe arthritis, helping her in and out of bed, bathing her, and running errands. This early, intimate exposure to care, reinforced by her mother’s career as a nurse, instilled in her a lifelong commitment to service. She earned a Master’s in Social Work and has dedicated her entire professional careerincluding 12 years at the Institute on Aging and the last eight at Avenidas- to the aging population, believing that growing older is a privilege to be honored, not a problem to be solved.

Her professional expertise deepened significantly when she became a long-distance caregiver for her parents in Florida. While serving as CEO, she managed hospital discharges, navigated her mother’s health crises, and supported her family through her father’s passing in September 2024. This personal immersion in the caregiving role allows her to speak with painful clarity about system failure and the silent burnout of family caregivers. This lived experience has solidified a core value she champions: the vital importance of supporting staff when “life happens.”The Avenidas Philosophy: Person-First Leadership

Kristina’s leadership is grounded in vulnerability and a deep respect for personhood. For her, care begins with listening- without judgment- and honoring autonomy, even when choices are imperfect.

This same philosophy guides Avenidas’ approach to aging. The organization intentionally challenges the idea that growing older requires surrendering one’s identity. By pairing enriching programs such as Zumba and photography with essential supportsincluding caregiver assistance, transportation services, and access to practical resources like legal guidance, tax preparation, and medical equipment loan programs- Avenidas affirms older adults not as limitations to be managed, but as whole people with curiosity, talents, dignity, and agency.

afford private care. Caught between limited time, financial strain, and fragmented services, this group often falls through the cracks of the current care system.

In response, Avenidas leans into what systems often overlook: real human connection. This is reflected in its recent partnership with the Friendly Voices program, a simple yet powerful initiative that provides consistent, reliable social support.

If Kristina were to leave the community with one message, it would reflect both her leadership and her humanity: listen before offering opinion or judgment. Truly hear what is being said, ask questions, seek to understand perspective, and extend grace- to others and to yourself. Leadership, she reminds us, is not about perfection, but about the willingness to make things right.

Kristina Lugo leads Avenidas with a constant awareness that every decision carries a human impact, ensuring the organization remains a steadfast advocate for aging adults and their caregivers.

Kristina also leads with accountability. She is open about examining her own biases and encourages a culture where people can acknowledge missteps and address harm directly. She believes leadership is not about being flawless, but about taking responsibility and modeling honesty.

At the same time, Kristina is keenly aware of the system’s gaps- particularly for the growing “middle population,” those who earn too much to qualify for public support yet lack the means to

County board picks fill-in schools chief

The San Mateo County Board of Education has appointed a temporary superintendent to serve out the remainder of Nancy Magee’s term after she decided to step down early.

Deputy Superintendent of the Educational Services Division Marco Chavez is now interim superintendent after the board unanimously approved his appointment at its Wednesday meeting.

“Working with you has been incredible,” said board President Hugo Torres at the meeting. “I don’t know what we would have done without you stepping in.”

Magee, who has served nearly eight years as superintendent at the San Mateo County Office of Education, announced she would be retiring this

month. She has been battling an illness, said Deputy County Attorney Lisa Cho at the meeting. Thursday is her last day.

Succession plan

Chavez has already taken on some of the responsibilities of superintendent.

In September 2025, Chavez was chosen to serve as deputy county superintendent of schools as a backup to assume decision-making in case Magee was absent as a result of her illness.

“This was put in as a safety measure to ensure that the operations of the SMCOE would carry on without any interruption or delay due to illness,” Cho said.

Chavez will serve the remaining 10 months left in Magee’s term until a newly elected superintendent starts in January 2027.

Early prenatal care drops, report

Early prenatal care improves the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and baby. But a new federal report shows it’s been on the decline.

The share of U.S. births to women who began prenatal care in the first trimester dropped from 78.3% in 2021 to 75.5% in 2024, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday.

Meanwhile, starting care later in pregnancy or getting no care at all has been on the rise. Prenatal care beginning in the second trimester rose from 15.4% to 17.3%, and starting care in the third trimester or getting no care went from 6.3% to 7.3%.

“We know that early engagement in prenatal care is linked to better overall

health outcomes,” said Dr. Clayton Alfonso, an OB-GYN at Duke University in North Carolina. When patients delay medical care during pregnancy, “we’ve missed that window to optimize both fetal and maternal care.”

Racial disparities

While the trend identified in the report held for nearly all racial and ethnic groups, the decrease in early prenatal care was higher for moms in minority groups.

For example, first-trimester care dropped from 69.7% in 2021 to 65.1% in 2024 for Black mothers. Getting late or no prenatal care raises the risk of maternal mortality, which is much higher among Black mothers.

‘How to Make a Killing’ lacks real bite

“How to Make a Killing,” starring Glen Powell as a working-class man who sets out to murderously reclaim his inheritance, has a clear inspiration: the great Ealing black comedy “Kind Hearts and Coronets.”

In that sublimely wicked 1949 film, Alec Guinness played all eight of the relatives that Dennis Price’s would-be heir tries to bump off, making the film among the most delightful showcases of Sir Alec’s range. Powell, as it happens, has already played a shape-shifter in an assassination comedy, Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.”

But the deft tonal balance of “Hit Man,” let alone of “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” is missing in “How to Make a Killing,” a disappointingly flat almost-remake that has neither the biting farce nor the chilling darkness to match its black comedy ambitions.

Family outcast

In the film, written and directed by John Patton Ford, Powell doesn’t opt for Guinness’ chameleonic path. He plays a version of the Price character: Becket Redfellow, an outcast from an uber-wealthy family. After becoming pregnant at 18, Becket’s mother is exiled by her father, Whitelaw Redfel-

low (Ed Harris). The most compelling thing about “How to Make a Killing” may be that, after an early flashback with Whitelaw, we know Becket will eventually face off with the Redfellow patriarch. There are worse ways to keep an audience around than to tacitly promise more Ed Harris.

Becket is, himself, the narrator of his tale. He’s telling it to a priest from a jail cell, four hours before his execution. But Becket is not remorseful for his misdeeds nor particularly anxious about his impending sentence. Disappointed by his last-meal cheesecake, he smirks, “Kill me now.”

If “How to Make a Killing” carried this tone — Powell’s signature glibness, with an edge — the movie might

have worked better. Instead, Becket is a curiously uninteresting protagonist whose descent into serial killing happens wanly.

On the hunt

After losing his job as a clerk to make way for the shop owner’s son, Becket resolves to track down the cousins that stand to inherit the vast family fortune. He’s motivated by advice from his mother — not to rest until he’s got “the right kind of life” — and by a chance encounter with his childhood crush (Margaret Qualley) who jocularly tells him to call her when he’s killed three or four.

The subsequent encounters give a window into the ultra-rich. Topher

Grace plays a cousin, Bill Camp an uncle and Raff Law, son of Jude, another cousin. “How to Make a Killing” has a handful of Hollywood nepo babies (Qualley is the daughter of Andie MacDowell), but going further might have added a meta twist.

Ford previously wrote and directed the excellent 2022 thriller “Emily the Criminal,” with Aubrey Plaza. That film, about a debt-ridden Los Angeles gig worker drawn into a criminal underbelly, showed Ford has the ability to connect contemporary class themes with gritty genre narratives. The more polished “How to Make a Killing,” though, never connects those dots.

It also doesn’t help that the last few months have already given us a sensational satire about killing to get ahead: Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” starring Lee Byung-hun as a newly unemployed family man who aims to eliminate his competition for a new job. Unfortunately for “How to Make a Killing,” it would have to bump off quite a few movies to move up the black-comedy ranks.

Release info

“How to Make a Killing,” an A24 release, opens in theaters today. It’s rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language and some violence/ bloody images. Running time: 105 minutes.

FCC probes ‘View’

The Federal Communications Commission is investigating ABC’s “The View” over possible violations of the requirement that broadcast stations give equal time to political candidates when they appear on-air, according to the head of the agency that oversees U.S. broadcast airwaves.

“The FCC has an enforcement action underway on that,” Chairman Brendan Carr told reporters after an agency meeting Wednesday, in response to a question about whether there were an investigation into the daytime series over potential violations of the “equal time” rule. “And we’re taking a look at it.”

James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Texas, ap-

peared on “The View” on Feb. 2. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who is running against Talarico for the nomination, has also been on the show.

Talk show crackdown

The Trump administration has taken steps to clamp down on talk shows, which the FCC has suggested may be “motivated by partisan purposes.” Earlier in the week, late-night host Stephen Colbert said CBS executives had pulled an appearance by Talarico on his program over fears it ran afoul of equal time provisions.

The FCC issued new guidance in January to late-night and daytime hosts that they needed to give political candidates equal time.

City official given $45K in exit deal

The city of Los Altos has paid $45,000 to the assistant city manager so he won’t sue or dis parage the city, according to a severance agreement obtained by the Post.

ZORNES

The agreement be tween the city and Assis tant City Manager Nick Zornes was signed on Nov. 21, the day after Zornes wrote a letter of resignation to City Manager Gabe Engeland.

“I must step away from my role due to ongoing personal reasons that re quire my full attention and presence as I care for family,” Zornes wrote.

The city provided a copy of the letter and agreement on Tuesday.

History with city Zornes, 35, of Santa Clara, was hired as the city’s development services di rector in May 2022 after working as a

planner in the Southern California cit ies of Dana Point and Encinitas.

In Los Altos, Zornes was involved in a wide range of plans and projects, such as a new downtown park and li brary patio.

Zornes also oversaw the city’s com pliance with state housing laws to allow more development in places like the Rancho Shopping Center.

Zornes was promoted to assistant city manager for land use in April 2024, earning a salary of $276,121 that year.

Zornes oversaw the Public Works Department, the Development Services Department and the City Clerk’s Office.

Engeland wouldn’t provide addi tional information about why Zornes left because it’s a personnel matter.

“Nick did exceptional work for Los Altos during his time here. I appreciate his dedication to the city and his ability to resolve complex, long‑standing is sues,” Engeland said in an email.

Zornes couldn’t be reached for com ment yesterday.

REALTOR

----

braced herself against the door and then heard police officers crash through her front door and announce themselves.

Officers found Cedillo Aparicio hiding under her bed, police said.

The 54-year-old woman, who was crying and hyperventilating, took some convincing to open the bathroom door, police said.

Never seen him before

She told police that she feared for her life and had never seen Cedillo Aparicio before.

Cedillo Aparicio, who had dried blood on his hands, invoked his right to an attorney and didn’t talk to officers, police said.

Cedillo Aparicio is also suspected of going through a neighbor’s backyard 15 minutes earlier, police said.

Licensed realtor

Cedillo Aparicio will be held at the Elmwood Jail in Milpitas with no bail allowed until his next hearing at the Palo Alto Courthouse on March 18.

Cedillo Aparicio has been a licensed realtor with Intero Real Estate Services since September 2022, according to the California Department of Real Estate.

continued health insurance to be paid for a year, totaling more than $400,000, Ledbetter said. Yesterday morning, Ledbetter was told by San Francisco Attorney Richard Bolanos, who is now representing the town, that he would not receive the money and that he would be on leave for 60 days.

“I feel a great sense of relief by telling the truth. I put a mirror up to the members on that council, and they have to live with that. I have a clear conscience,” Ledbetter told the Post.

Hired in April

Ledbetter was hired by the council in April. His contract is set to expire in May 2028 and his base salary is $300,000.

No Woodside council member has responded to the Post’s inquiry for comment.

Dombkowski allegedly abused his position by asking Ledbetter to postpone any requests for low-income housing, Ledbetter said. Dombkowski and Goeld would tell Ledbetter not to comply with the Housing Element, a housing quota under the state law, Ledbetter said.

“They both seemed concerned for their political careers and also concerned to have low-income housing in their districts, and they placed their petty needs above the need for housing and the requirement for the town

CEDILLO APARACIO

manager to follow state law,” Ledbetter wrote in his report.

Shocking dinners

Ledbetter was invited to two dinners by Dombkowski and Goeld after accepting the town manager position in May. At the first dinner, Dombkowski allegedly called Wall derogatory terms like referring to her chest as “marbles on a billiards table,” Ledbetter said.

Dombkowski would regularly call Wall names over the nine months he has worked for the town, Ledbetter said.

At the second dinner, Goeld allegedly told Ledbetter that Wall opposed his hiring because he was a white male who was from a conservative area. Ledbetter was previously the city manager of Yreka, in Siskiyou County.

Goeld also allegedly said Councilman Hassan Aburish was easy to manipulate, Ledbetter alleges. At that dinner, Goeld speculated about Aburish’s nationality. During that conversation, he referred to Palestinans as the “original” n-words, according to Ledbetter’s report.

Texts all day

Ledbetter said Wall would belittle and be very demeaning toward him. Wall would text him at 3 a.m., midnight, weekends and holidays, expecting immediate responses, Ledbetter said.

Ledbetter said he told Town Attorney Jean Savaree he was being bullied by Wall but was told to ignore it. Savaree compared it to the harassment she experi-

enced early in her career, Ledbetter said. Savaree also told Ledbetter not to tell anyone he was told about the hiring process, as it’s a violation of the Brown Act to leak a closed session discussion.

Sent to the DA

Ledbetter sent his report to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, which is now reviewing it for any Brown Act violations, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Wagstaffe said it’s too early to tell if any crimes were committed, either by council members or Ledbetter. The Brown Act is a state law that requires government agencies to make decisions in public, with properly noticed agendas and time for the public to weigh in.

The town is also investigating Ledbetter’s allegations and demand.

GUARDS ------–––

several months, police Chief Andrew Binder said in a report for council.

“The individuals are intended to be a high-visibility presence to observe and report activity around their post,” Binder said. The city has hired security guards for railroad crossings twice before — from January 2010 to June 2011 and from July 2016 to June 2018.

City has detection system

Council in 2018 voted to buy a $1.5 million electronic detection system that alerts police when people

are on the tracks. The detection system costs $300,000 per year, but the city won’t provide information about its performance.

Caltrain has recorded 54 deaths on the tracks since January 2022, including three Palo Alto students in the last year.
