In icy waters near Alcatraz
One person died, three people were missing and 16 others were rescued from the waters off San Francisco after a pontoon boat carrying 20 people sank yesterday afternoon, authorities said. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported the toll and said crews that arrived on the scene near Alcatraz Island found a three-deck pontoon vessel almost fully under water, with the motor still running and leaking fuel. Most of the people on board were family gathered for a “funeral type thing,” Crispen said, A BODY is covered with a tarp while rescuers search for those missing after a boat sunk near Alcatraz yesterday. according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Alcatraz Island, once a federal prison infamously inescapable due to the strong ocean currents and cold Pacific waters that surround it, is now a tourist destination. Videos of the scene showed boats deployed to rescue people who had been on the vessel, which was largely submerged with objects floating nearby. The boating mishap was initially reported as a fire, “but we now don’t have any evidence of that,” Crispen said. Some of the people were injured from falling into the water, but there were no reports of burns, he said. The person who [See BOAT, page 18]
Should empty office become more homes? BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
A debate over allowing more housing in a growing part of Palo Alto has split the city’s Planning and Transportation Commission. Property owners Jessica and Thomas Agramonte are asking the city to change the rules for their vacant office at 470 Olive Ave., just off El Camino Real in the North Ventura neighborhood. The city technically allows one house on the property, but an office was built there in 1968 before council approved the one-house limit in 1978.
