The commission narrowly voted 3-2 on Wednesday in favor of forwarding a plan to the city’s Architectural Review Board to erect the building on 788 San Antonio Road, with Commissioners Kevin Ji and Bryna Chang voting against.

Pizza helps police end standoff with teen girl

Mountain View police officers used pizza and boba to get a 14-year-old girl to come outside after she cut her mom’s hands with a footlong butcher knife, Chief Mike Canfield said in a memo.

After attacking her mom around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, the girl barricaded herself inside the home and wouldn’t talk to a crisis negotiation team, Canfield told City Manager Kimbra McCarthy in a memo.

School Resource Officer James Guevarra had a positive relationship with the girl and spoke with her for several hours on the phone, Canfield said.

“He remained patient and steady throughout, allowed her to share her perspective, and used FaceTime to visually confirm that she had not injured herself,” Canfield said in the memo, which the Post obtained yesterday through a California Public Records Act request.

Negotiation plan

The negotiation team developed a plan to bring pizza and boba to the front door to encourage the girl to come outside, Canfield said.

and cited for the incident with her mother, Canfield said.

“She was allowed to keep her food and drink, which helped maintain trust and keep her calm,” Canfield said.

The girl had expressed suicidal intent and was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, Canfield said.

Now the city is working on a longer term solution, like having her live with another family member in a more stable environment, Canfield said.

“The plan worked,” Canfield said.

The girl was taken to Pacific Clinics on a mental health hold

“I have seen many barricaded and crisis calls over the years, but this one stood out as exceptional,” Canfield said.

Hospice fraud scheme uncovered

California officials yesterday said they uncovered a multimillion-dollar scheme to use stolen identities from people outside the state to charge for hospice services paid for with a government insurance program.

State Attorney General Rob Bonta said officials have charged 21 and have so far arrested 5 people involved as the Trump administration accused California of not doing enough to crack down on fraud.

for us. This is about protecting taxpayer dollars, protecting the programs that sick and vulnerable Californians rely on, and protecting our state,” Bonta said in a news release.

Dark web purchases

tal of about $267 million, Bonta’s office said.

The individuals are charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud, health care fraud, money laundering, and identity theft with aggravated white collar crime and money laundering enhancements.

Federal push

Federal officials have launched a nationwide effort to target improper spending in federal benefit programs, arresting eight people last week they said were involved in various health care fraud schemes in and around Los Angeles.

“This isn’t a political game

After the Department of Health Care Services notified state prosecutors of potential fraud, investigators discovered a scheme in which individuals bought personal information for non-California residents from the dark web and enrolled them in Medi-Cal, the state’s equivalent of Medicaid, Bonta’s office said. The program provides free or low-cost health insurance to low-income individuals and families.

Then, those individuals bought 14 hospice companies and began billing for hospice services for the stolen identities. They billed a to-

“For years, California has led the charge to protect public programs from fraud and abuse,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “We hold accountable to the fullest extent of the law anyone who tries to rip off taxpayers and take advantage of public programs.”

Under Bonta, the state has filed 119 hospice-related criminal cases, his office said.

The Trump administration has made California a focus of its national anti-fraud efforts and zeroed in on Medicare hospice fraud in the Los Angeles area.

LifeMoves leader exits, interim set

The CEO who runs homeless shelters in Palo Alto, Mountain View and Redwood City has stepped down.

After five years in charge, LifeMoves CEO Aubrey Merriman will be leaving the nonprofit that helps homeless people find stable housing, according to spokeswoman Maria Prato.

“Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing what’s possible when a dedicated team and an engaged community come together with a shared purpose,” Merriman said.

Chief Operating Officer Nick Hodges will serve as interim CEO while the LifeMoves Board of Directors begins the search for a new CEO, according to Prato. Hodges has experience in governance, fundraising and finance.

Merriman’s yearly salary was $325,880 in 2023, according to the nonprofit ProPublica website.

“Five years ago, we hired (Merriman) to lead LifeMoves because we saw in him the vision, passion and commitment to innovation and outcomes that would help LifeMoves grow in its roles as Silicon Valley’s leading provider of interim supportive housing and services,” said Board Chair Melissa Selcher.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Parked car breaks can help reset day

Have you ever pulled into the driveway of your home or a parking lot spot and just ... stayed there?

Maybe it’s a few minutes, or half an hour. You might be scrolling on your phone, belting out a favorite song or just staring into the distance.

Scroll through TikTok and you’ll find countless videos of people wondering aloud why they’re doing the same thing: arriving at work, home, the gym and then just sitting in their car. Some get there early on purpose. Others stay long after they’ve parked.

Behind the science

It turns out, science has a few ideas for why people do this. Whether in a car, on a sidewalk or just outside a door, that temporary pause can act as a buffer between one part of the day and the next. And while there isn’t an extensive body of research to back it up, experts say this can be good for you — if you keep a few things in mind.

“A lot of times we’re just going 100 miles an hour,” said Jenny Taitz, a clin-

ical psychologist who runs her own practice in Beverly Hills. “But if we can literally stop, like slow down, take a step back, observe, proceed mindfully, maybe like a few minutes to reset between activities, it kind of gives you an ability to be intentional.”

Emotional reset

Brief moments alone can help reset emotions when moving from one thing to another — like leaving work stress behind before coming home.

“By taking a brief little break, you can at least take a moment to relax and prepare before moving forward,” said psychologist Anthony Vaccaro with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

People seek out these breaks to process, recalibrate and shake off the gloom. And doing it in a car makes sense because “it’s an in-between space,” according to psychologist Thuy-vy Nguyen with Durham University in England and founder of Solitude Lab.

Riz Ahmed’s ‘Hamlet’ a

“To be, or not to be,” Hamlet says in his best-known speech — questioning the value of life itself and, more immediately, his own.

But surely these words have rarely, if ever, been uttered with such an apparent death wish as when Riz Ahmed, our latest troubled prince, hurtles down a motorway in his BMW, gathering speed with each iamb.

Talk about “shuffling off this mortal coil” — his hands are off the wheel, and he’s in the wrong lane! His eventual demise, in director Aneil Karia’s new “Hamlet,” seems perilously premature — until he wisely stops the car. Because, as we know, there are many deaths to come before Hamlet’s.

Hamlet in a rush

Every screen adaptation has had to wrestle with where to place, physically, this most famous of speeches. But Ahmed’s version seems particularly apt for the actor’s considerable talents, and is one of the more compelling moments of a pared-down, engaging if spotty rendering of the world’s most famous play. Jittery, tense, fast-talking and always on edge, this is a Hamlet, above all, in a rush.

He also inevitably recalls a Ham-

let-like character who recently graced our small screens: Kendall Roy in “Succession.”

The setting, indeed, is so “Succession”-like, it hardly seems an accident.

The film, adapted by Michael Lesslie, takes place in modern-day corporate London, centered on a wealthy real estate family in the South Asian community.

The name of the family biz? No, not Roy. It’s Elsinore, of course.

We open with death, naturally. “Elsinore Property CEO Dead at 77,” the headlines blare. Every Hamlet wrestles with grief and anger, but Ahmed, in an absorbing performance that starts

with wide-eyed intensity and moves on from there, seems already near a breaking point as he mourns his father.

Power struggle

Hamlet’s instability makes us wonder if venal Claudius (an excellent Art Malik) is really a murderer — or if Hamlet is imagining it. But we don’t have much time to reflect. Hamlet’s mother Gertrude, a queenlike corporate wife (Sheeba Chaddha, poignant) is about to marry Claudius. Hamlet, of course, finds this appalling — even before his meets his father’s ghost.

That crucial scene takes place on a bleak rooftop (most scenes are at night,

or if in daytime, still dark). “I am your father’s spirit,” says the ghost, asking Hamlet to avenge him. It’s not quite obvious why this corporate Claudius killed his brother — was it a mere power struggle? Relatively short shrift is given also to a social-justice theme involving a tent city of people evicted from Elsinore property.

Another omission concerns Ophelia’s role. The character, played here by Morfydd Clark, has never had it easy, but surely she deserved something akin to the mad scene she has in the play.

As in every “Hamlet,” when blood starts flowing, it flows fast. The final confrontation plays out cleverly here in a family dining room — not with the traditional swords, but certainly with poison.

We all know what happens. At least Kendall stayed alive at the end of “Succession” — although in his depleted, defeated state, as he stared at the water, one can imagine what he, too, might have been thinking: “To be, or not to be?”

Release info

“Hamlet,” a Vertical Entertainment release, opens in theaters today and has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “some bloody violence, suicide, brief drug use and language.” Running time: 114 minutes.

Judges scrutinize Combs’ sentence

Federal appeals court judges questioned during oral arguments yesterday whether a roughly fouryear prison term given to Sean “Diddy” Combs for the hip-hop mogul’s conviction on prostitution-related charges was too harsh.

the most prison time ever given someone convicted of the same charges with a similar criminal history.

The three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan did not immediately rule after hearing two hours of arguments.

Fairness questioned

Throughout the arguments, judges questioned whether a judge improperly considered elements of acquitted charges to sentence Combs to what his lawyer, Alexandra Shapiro, said was

SPRING ARRIVALS

Comfort, confidence, and everyday luxury — all season long.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik, arguing for the government, challenged Shapiro’s claim, saying the four-year, two-month prison term given to Combs was below what federal sentencing guidelines called for and was in line with similar convictions in the 2nd Circuit.

Combs, currently in federal prison in New Jersey, is challenging his conviction and prison sentence. He was convicted last July under the federal Mann Act, which bans transporting people across state lines for any sexual crime.

But he was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges that carried the potential for a life sentence.

Gropings earn jail

An ultrasound technician who fondled patients at Stanford Hospital has been sentenced to a year in jail, court records show.

Mitchell Van Vu, 58, of Bay Point, admitted to groping three different men when he was supposed to be doing ultrasound imaging on their groins and leg.

Palo Alto police were first alerted to Vu’s sexual advances on April 10, 2023, by a man in his 40s who just had surgery on his broken leg.

But Officer Randy Alexander said he couldn’t get in touch with a Stanford nurse regarding the complaint, so he sent his report to prosecutors without making an arrest.

A 43-year-old man from Merced said Vu used his hand instead of the ultrasound wand while doing imaging for groin pain on May 15, 2023.

The man’s wife told police that her husband was crying on the phone afterwards and could hardly speak about what happened.

Firing, arrest

Stanford fired Vu on June 2, 2023, spokeswoman Courtney Lodato said at the time.

Vu was arrested at his home in unincorporated Contra Costa County on June 21, 2023. He signed a plea deal with Deputy District Attorney Nik Warrior on March 26, 2024, that capped his sentenced at four years in prison.

Judge Benjamin Williams sentenced Vu to a year in jail on Oct. 6, court records show.

VU

property, fire risk, unsanitary conditions, environmental impacts and emergency response, according to Williams.

Los Altos currently coordinates with Santa Clara County and local nonprofit service providers to support outreach efforts and improve access to shelter, housing programs and other essential services, according to Williams.

Similar bans elsewhere

If Los Altos approves the ban, the city will join a growing list of other cities doing the same. Redwood City and Fremont passed similar bans last year.

In 2024, the Santa Clara Valley Water District, which owns land surrounding Santa Clara County’s creeks and waterways, passed a controversial no-camping policy on its policies in an effort to reduce homeless encampments.

TRAFFIC –HOMELESS

space. The project will be located at the corner of San Antonio and Leghorn Street, which borders Mountain View and is only a block away from Costco and Charleston Plaza. Currently the space is an empty commercial building.

The plans include adding 74 new parking spaces and 167 biking spaces on the project site, but Chang believes that is not enough to accommodate for an influx of future residents.

Congested corridor

“We have a transportation problem in this corridor,” Chang said. “I don’t think it makes sense to have this level of density until it becomes clear that having this doesn’t increase our traffic problem.”

Ji also said the San Antonio area is already congested, and people who move into the buildings will most likely need a car to commute to work. He is also concerned how the proposal doesn’t include any parking for the building’s retail spaces.

“As someone who lives in south Palo Alto and goes on San Antonio pretty frequently, it is already a parking lot,” Ji said.

Likes it all

But Commissioner Forest Peterson said he is in favor of “pretty much everything” about the development.

While San Antonio doesn’t have much parking now, the new buildings will encourage a larger bikeable, walkable and public transit network.

“The density of the population going into that corridor is simply going to dictate transportation,” he said.

Following the board’s decision, the commission will review the application again before sending it to council for a final vote.

New neighborhood coming soon

The area along San Antonio Road will soon be the site of a massive mixed-use neighborhood as part of the city’s plan to add more residential and commercial space in the southern part of the city. Palo Alto has loosened building standards in the area to accommodate for future developments, and could potentially house up to 7,400 new homes along San Antonio.

In addition to the eight-story building on 788 San Antonio Road, plans are in the works to build a five-story building with 92 units next door.

At its Monday meeting, the majority of council said they want to allow eight-story buildings on San Antonio, which is taller than the city’s historic five-story height limit but well short of the 20-story buildings offered by planners.

ROBOTICS

softly and slowly throughout the afternoon.

At her first meeting in August 2018, Krier said she was immediately resisted by the boosters club, a group of parents who charged students to join the robotics team, led by parents Min Xu and Jim Barbera.

“A woman can’t do this job,” a parent booster allegedly said.

At the same meeting, Krier told a student to get up from her boyfriend’s lap, and Xu gave Krier a dirty look, “as if I was some kind of prude,” Krier said.

Pride flag destroyed

In her first week of work, Krier said students destroyed her gay pride flag.

Krier said boosters encouraged students to write complaints about her and got angry when she wouldn’t let students in the lab without her supervision.

Krier said she inherited a dangerous program from former coach Chris Kuszmaul. She showed the jury pictures of saws, grinders and drills that

were left outside, along with uncovered outlets and tangled extension cords.

“It was a cluttery mess,” Krier said.

Krier said she worried that a student would lose a finger, and she would be held responsible.

Krier said she wanted more girls and low-income students on the team, but the students largely decided who could join.

“The students were 100% in charge, driven by the boosters,” she said.

Barriers to club

A $395 fee and 7:30 p.m. meetings were barriers for East Palo Alto students who took a bus to Paly, Krier said.

The team was disproportionately made up of siblings and couples, while students suggested by teachers were treated like outcasts, Krier said.

“It was a popularity-based selection,” she said.

One captain allegedly told Krier that students who don’t speak Chinese weren’t allowed on the team.

“I was shocked,” she told the 12 jurors yesterday.

Doctors testify

Krier’s psychiatrist and primary care physician from Stanford Health Care testified in the morning.

Krier suffers from depression, PTSD and cannabis use disorder and aborted a suicide attempt in 2018, Dr. James Armontrout said.

When Krier first saw Armontrout in October 2022, she would go from staying up all night to sleeping for 12 hours a day, Armontrout said.

Krier’s time at the district was a “substantial factor”

in her struggles with focus and motivation, Armontrout said.

“The experiences there had been very stressful and had contributed to her 2018 suicide attempt,” he said.

Armontrout said he has prescribed Krier different antidepressants and adjusted her dose up and down in three years of seeing her. She’s in therapy and doing better, he said.

The district’s case

Attorney Mark Davis, representing the district, made the case that Krier’s mental health issues preceded her time at Paly.

Davis confirmed with Armontrout that Krier has PTSD from being in New York City on 9/11 and seeing people falling out of the Twin Towers.

Krier’s PTSD was triggered by the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last year, Armontrout said.

A babysitter sexually abused Krier and her sister as children, and Krier left a physically abusive relationship in 2006, Armontrout said.

Other

issues

Krier had 18 different jobs between 2002 and 2013, and she told doctors the 2018 suicide attempt was driven by arguments with her father, Davis said.

Krier spent over $700 per month on cannabis at one point, Davis said.

Davis alluded to Krier having anger issues because she pepper-sprayed a man on a scooter after he ran over her foot in Berkeley.

In response, Krier said she has a medical marijuana

prescription to help with her appetite and only takes CBD gummies, and never before work. She said she had a lot of jobs because of summer school and shortterm gigs.

Krier clarified that the man also hit two girls on his scooter in Berkeley.

“I sprayed pepper spray on his handlebars and said, ‘Stay off the sidewalk,’” Krier said.

Wants payout

Krier wants the district to pay her at least $1.1 million because she allegedly can’t find a new job. She said she had to give up a tenured position and a rent-controlled apartment to move to Palo Alto, and then she had to move again.

Armontrout said resolving the case will likely be helpful for Krier’s mental health, no matter what the outcome is.

“Litigation is stressful,” he said.

The trial will continue today. It is the first case of 11 other lawsuits the school district is facing from parents, students and former employees.
