The Palo Alto Unified School District has settled a lawsuit with a special education coordinator who said her supervisors wouldn’t reduce her workload when she struggled with her mental health. Details about the settlement, and how much Coordinator Laurie Garcia will be paid to drop her case, aren’t available because the agreement isn’t finalized, school district Legal Compliance Manager Amanda Bark said in an email to the Post. The board will discuss the lawsuit behind closed doors tomorrow night. Garcia said in her lawsuit that her close friend suddenly died in October 2022, and Special Education Director Cynthia Lelong-Perez gave her three days off. Garcia asked for more time to grieve and to prepare for a a funeral at her home, but Lelong-Perez allegedly said Garcia didn’t qualify for bereavement leave because the friend wasn’t a fam[See SCHOOLS, page 18]
