WELCOME TO COLAC
If you haven’t visited the Colac area before, there is plenty to see and do!
Colac lies within the largest ancient lava field in the southern hemisphere. The historic eruptions have left their presence in the numerous volcanic cones and lakes scattered from Geelong to the South Australian border. Locally, you can visit the Red Rock Scenic Lookout and at Camperdown, Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Gnotuk and their associated peaks make an interesting scenic drive. On the way you pass through the iconic area of the Stony Rises (an ancient lava flow) where there are many historic drystone walls still standing.
An hour from Colac is the world famous Great Ocean Road where you can take in the coastal views of Lorne, Apollo Bay and further to the west the Twelve Apostles. Well worth a trip. To get there you can drive through the forests of the Otway Ranges – cool climate rainforest as good as any in Tasmania. The scenic drive of Turton’s Track is a beauty, as long as you are not towing cattle! There is an interesting Treetops Walk down that way too, and a grove of magnificent Californian Redwood trees planted as an experiment almost 100 years ago.

There is an interesting range of private accommodation options in Colac and surrounding towns as well as free camping at Meredith Park on the shores of Lake Colac which is only a 5 minute drive from our sale site.
DINING
There are some good country pubs including the Farmers Arms at Beeac and the Ti-Tree Hotel at Warrion as well as the Austral Hotel, the Colac East Hotel, the Union Hotel and the Commercial Hotel all in Colac. Also in Colac, Fusion Restaurant is very good, and open for lunch Monday to Friday. Future Café next door is open for tasty food all day. The world famous Brae Restaurant is located at Birregurra, 15 minutes from Colac. It’s booked out months in advance, but there are occasional cancellations. Also in Birregurra, Yield does fine food and the Royal Mail Hotel is very good as well.

Colac has become a significant centre for the Limousin breed because of great support from commercial operators, stud breeders, stock agents, feed lotters and beef processors.
A number of Limousin breeders are based in the area and provide bulls to local commercial cattle operations as well as providing high end genetics and stock across Australia, New Zealand and Asia. With our growing reputation and expanding herds we felt it was a good idea this year to combine and offer our sale animals at one event for ease of buyer convenience.
The style of Limousin presented in this sale is based on the demands of our buyers.
PELICAN RISE LIMOUSIN

Pelican Rise Limousin commenced in 2008 with the purchase of some females from a dispersal sale that included Mandayen and French genetics, we later added Donna Valley and Premier Limousin females. As we have developed the herd, we have added genetics from across Australia, Canada and USA to produce the modern style of Limousin that are structurally sound, early maturing, easy calving and very quiet cattle.
All our herd is either polled or homo polled and all animals for sale are DNA tested to ensure correct parentage and status of the F94L gene. The F94L gene is the reason Limousin are so effective in feed efficiency, hybrid vigour, growth and eating quality. Prior to sale all our sale stock will be vet checked and vaccinated.
Pelican Rise provides a written guarantee on all stock purchased from our sale covering fertility, temperament, parentage and Pestivirus status.

Andrew and Lyn Ralph’s passion for breeding Limousin cattle began with the establishment of the Tooronga Limousin Stud in 2008. Since then, they have continued to invest in industry leading genetics to provide high performing cattle. In 2021 the Stud relocated from Central Victoria to the greener pastures of Larpent, south of Colac.
Our breeding objective is to produce high yielding, feed efficient cattle. Emphasis is also placed on structural soundness, calving ease, fertility and docility. Careful consideration is taken when selecting genetics for each breeding program. Females are joined to Polled and Homozygous Polled sires using both AI and Embryo transfer.
We aim to offer high performing animals that are suitable for both Stud Stock and commercial breeding programs and are excited to be invited to offer a selection of our Stud animals for sale in the Pelican Rise Invitation Sale.
All animals are DNA tested, have EVB’s through Breedplan and are fully vaccinated.
TANYBRYN PARK LIMOUSINS

Colin and Helen Masters’ home farm is deep in the Otway Ranges at Tanybryn: 250 acres mostly covered by pristine temperate rainforest. A unique environment of towering mountain ash, tree ferns, steep slopes and gullies with an annual rainfall of two metres. It’s green all year, but bitter in winter, with occasional snowfalls. Our cattle are bred tough!
A lot of the work gets done at our lease block at Birregurra. We have been using Limousin genetics for a couple of decades and breeding them for 13 years. From the outset Helen prioritised creating a homozygous polled, quiet herd. We like the modern Limousin type - long and deep, with good fat cover as well as muscle as it correlates with what our clients want. We calve around 40 cows a year, including a few commercials and they must calve easily. We pay attention to various traits such as milk, yield, short gestation length and growth and aim for a balanced profile. Genetic gain has been fast tracked through embryo transfer and AI.
Our cattle perform well – they have won at championship level at National and Royal shows, sold to most states in Australia and we have exported bulls and heifers for breeding to Indonesia and Malaysia. Most importantly, feedback from buyers has been very positive.
All animals are DNA tested, have a full EBV profile and are fully vaccinated. Our sale bulls have not received any pampering. They are ready to work. We guarantee every animal sold and welcome visitors and feedback at any time.

Otway Felix was established in 2007 and expanded rapidly with the purchase of foundation females from major dispersing studs: mainly White Lakes, Premier, and Kensal, with select females from Timor, Birubi, Tanholm, and French pure females from Donna Valley. Top North American, European and Australian sires have been selected for complimentary growth, docility and structure.
Our emphasis is on breeding robust, well-muscled but soft and easily managed cattle, both apricot and black, balancing maternal qualities of calving ease, low birth weight and high milk with strong growth. We plan to further blend the rich genetic strains of our females into an integrated and attractive Otway Felix type. Over the years the stud has been a finalist in Beef Week’s Pen of Ten Heifers and exported heifers to Malaysia and Indonesia and Limousin bulls to Chinese and Indonesian buyers
The stud is based at Birregurra on the Barwon River plains, just south of the Princes Highway between Geelong and Colac, with additional mountain grazing at Otway Felix, located in the Otway ranges south of Colac. • We are second generation Limousin stud breeders, based in Deans Marsh, Victoria. Railway Limousin stud was started by Sean Smartt and Stephen Raskatos in 2019 with the purchase of heifers from Tanybryn Park and Pelican Rise and also the implanting of embryos from Red Oak and Wattlevale. Over the past 3 years we have grown the stud considerably by purchasing females and embryos from leading studs such as Mandayen, Summit, Maryvale and Morrisvale. We are striving to bring the best genetics from both overseas and within Australia to compliment our herd of polled and docile cattle.

Prospective buyers need to register prior to the start of the sale if attending in person, or contact one of the sale agents if you would like someone to advise and/or bid for you. If you are planning to bid online, please allow enough time to log in.

All vendors will provide a warranty in writing to the purchasers of their animals to guarantee fertility and docility for 6 months from date of sale.
Embryos will be warrantied for a minimum 50% success rate if implanted by an approved licensed technician

TRANSFERS
All sale animals are currently registered with the Australian Limousin Breeders Society. If you would like your purchase transferred to you on the database, please indicate this on the buyer registration form or contact the vendor after the sale.
DELIVERY
Free delivery will be provided for all animals within 200 kms of Colac. Delivery to more distant locations will be subsidised.
INSURANCE
Once you purchase an animal it becomes your responsibility. While all care will be taken by the vendors, we recommend buyers insure their purchases. Please contact selling agents to arrange insurance.
TAKING YOUR NEW PURCHASE HOME
All herd animals appreciate company. If you have purchased a new bull, please be aware that he will probably have been running with a group of young bulls all his life. Put him in with a couple of steers or older cows for a few days to adjust. It’s best not to put a young bull in with a group of older bulls until he has finished his first season of work. Similarly, cows need time to sort out their position in the herd and introducing them to a small group first rather than a big mob will prevent your new female from being chased around.
SAFETY
While we expect all of our animals to behave well, we can never be sure how they will react to visitors entering their pens. Taking this into account, we advise that we accept no liability for any accidents that may occur at the sale property.

All lots will be available for inspection from 10.00am on the day. They will also be available for viewing on Thursday the 2nd of February which is the Beef Week Open day in our area.

EXPLANATION OF ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES
An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait measured.
EBVs are provided for the following traits:
Calving Ease Direct: estimates the differences in the ability of a sire’s calves to be born unassisted from a 2-year-old heifer.
Gestation Length: ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs.
Birth Weight: indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny.
200, 400 & 600 Day Weight: give us an estimation of the animal's genetic potential for growth.
Mature Cow Weight: estimates differences between animals in live weights of cows at 5 years of age.
Milk: a key component of fast growth to weaning is the dam's maternal performance. A bull with a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well.
Scrotal Size: indicates whether the bull will produce sons with above average or below average scrotal sizes.
Carcase Weight: ranks animals for carcase weight.
Eye Muscle Area: ranks animals for eye muscle area measured at the 12 th rib on a 300kg carcase.
Rib Fat: ranks animals for rib fat depth at the 12th rib on a 300kg carcase.
Rump Fat: ranks animals for fat depth at the p8 site on the rump on a 300kg carcase.
Intra Muscular Fat: ranks animals for the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12th rib of a 300kg carcase.
Docility: is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.
Comparing EBVs: The EBVs for Limousins cannot be compared with EBVs for animal of other breeds. They should be compared with the current average EBV for the Limousin breed shown below.
Accuracies: Accuracies are presented with each EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal and its relatives.
