The Founding of Bradley University On April 10, 1897, workers gathered on Peoria’s West Bluff to break ground for the campus’ first building, Bradley Hall. The acres of prairie grass on which they stood would one day form the campus of a prominent university due to the courage, strength and determination of the institution’s founder, Lydia Moss Bradley.
expanded after her death to include a classical education, industrial arts and home economics. She stated the first objective of this institution would be “to furnish its students with the means of living an independent, industrious and useful life by the aid of a practical knowledge of the useful arts and sciences.”
Lydia Moss Bradley had seen all her hopes, ambitions and dreams for her six children end in their untimely deaths. After much research and discussion, she and her husband, Tobias, considered using their wealth to establish an orphanage as a memorial to their children.
In October 1896, William Rainey Harper, Ph.D., president of the University of Chicago, convinced Lydia to move ahead with her plans and establish the school during her lifetime. The State of Illinois provided a charter for Bradley Polytechnic Institute on Nov. 13, 1896. Lydia initially provided 17½ acres of land and money to build and equip two campus buildings and annual operating expenses for the institution.
Unfortunately, Tobias died in 1867, before their dream was realized. Alone, Lydia devoted herself to establishing a fitting tribute to her family. After extensive research and travel to various institutions, Lydia decided instead of an orphanage, she would establish a school where young people could learn practical skills to prepare them for life and work in the modern world. In 1892, she purchased a controlling interest in Parsons Horological School in LaPorte, Ind., the first school for watchmakers in the United States. After moving the school to Peoria, Lydia specified in her will it should be
Once the trustees awarded contracts for Bradley Hall and Horology Hall (later renamed Westlake Hall), work moved ahead quickly. Fourteen faculty and 150 students began classes in Bradley Hall on Oct. 4, 1897, while 500 workers still hammered away. (Soon the Horological Department added another eight faculty and 70 students.) Bradley Polytechnic Institute was formally dedicated on Oct. 8, 1897. Corinne Unland became its first graduate in June 1898.
By 1899, 350 pupils, equally divided between men and women, had enrolled in the School of Arts and Science. Instruction was offered in biology, chemistry, food work, sewing, English, German, French, Latin, Greek, history, manual arts, drawing, mathematics and physics. Pleased with its progress, Lydia transferred the rest of her estate to the school. This included nearly 1,000 different pieces of property, the use of which she reserved until her death. At the 1906 Founder’s Day Convocation, she announced an additional gift to build Hewitt Gymnasium, now Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts. Lydia died Jan. 16, 1908, at the age of 91. The institute continued to grow and develop to meet the educational needs of the region. In 1920, it became a four-year college offering bachelor’s degrees. Renamed Bradley University, the institution began offering graduate programs in 1946. Today, Bradley’s living alumni total over 70,000 worldwide.

Academic Dress Academic costumes derive from two garments: a type of robe and a hood or head covering worn in the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the clergy composed the majority of the educated class, academic dress is an adaptation of the cope or mantle worn for warmth in unheated buildings and in religious processions. Through the years, great diversity in color and style of cap, gown and hood developed until the United States adopted an intercollegiate code in 1895 to encourage standard designs and usage. An academic costume consists of three items: the gown, the hood and the Oxford cap or mortar board. Gowns are easily distinguished by their sleeves.
Bachelor’s gowns have long, pointed sleeves. The sleeves of a master’s gown are oblong panels reaching nearly to the hem of the gown. Each sleeve has a small arc cut out near the bottom and a slit at the elbow through which wearers extend their arms. A doctor’s gown has full and bell-shaped sleeves that carry three horizontal bars; it also has a velvet panel extending around the neck and down the front to the hem. The velvet trim is usually black but may be of the color associated with the degree.

The color of the trim of a hood identifies the wearer’s degree, while the color of the lining indicates the institution that conferred the degree. The Oxford cap is black and has a long tassel which is fastened by a button on the top. The tassel is usually worn pendant over the left front of the cap. Doctors wear a gold tassel. All bachelor's degrees wear a universal red and white tassel with the Bradley seal.
Hoods for master’s degrees and doctorates are similar. The former are shorter and are trimmed with a narrower velvet band than the latter. A doctor’s hood is four feet long, has
