CTE In Middle School

Why Middle School CTE Matters

Start Early. Build Skills. Make Connections.

In grades 6-8, CTE is an invitation for students to begin exploring real careers, developing technical and employability skills, and connecting what they learn to their future plans. Middle school CTE courses in Tennessee are designed to give students the knowledge and experience they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

DigitalTechnology

Students dive into computing, coding, and problem-solving, exploring how technology works and impacts our world. They design programs, analyze data, and create digital solutions, building skills that prepare them for high school and future careers. Every middle school student in Bradley County takes this core course.

8th graders earn high school credit for Computer Science while completing projects that put their skills into action.

STEM

Students tackle real-world challenges in STEM

6th grade: Investigate how STEM connects to everyday life, explore careers, and practice basic engineering design.

7th grade: Design and test prototypes, analyze data, and refine solutions with teamwork.

8th grade: Solve complex problems, apply math and computational thinking, and present solutions, preparing for high school STEM pathways.

Career Clusters

Programs of Study

According to Advance CTE, the National Career Clusters® Framework “provides structural alignment and a common language to bridge education and work, empowering each learner to explore, decide and prepare for dynamic and evolving careers.”

Graphic created by The National Career Clusters® Framework For more information, visit https://careertech org/career-clusters/

META-CLUSTERS

Broad, purpose-driven metasectors designed to inspire young people and guide them toward clusters that match their interests, align with their goals, and reflect the impact they hope to have on their communities.

CLUSTERS

Broad categories of career paths within a specific field, characterized by shared skill sets and aligned with industry areas.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Industry sectors organized based on groupings established by the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

CROSS CUTTING-CLUSTERS

Clusters structured around a combination of sector-specific roles and contextualized functions, rather than strictly defined industry sectors. These clusters include subclusters and influence course selections across all Career Clusters.

2026 CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION GUIDE | 10

WHAT ARE CAREER LEVELS?

Most career pathways start with entry-level positions, which can lead to advancement through experience or further education.

Students can begin some entry-level jobs while in high school.

Professional Careers

Require university degree or additional experience

A Career Pathway will have jobs in all three levels, which build on each other from entry to professional

Technical Careers

Require TCAT (technical college), community college degree, or additional experience

Entry Level Careers

Require a high school diploma, industry certification, or experience

College Career Ready

How to be a CCR Graduate?

A Tennessee student who earns a high school diploma and reaches milestones showing they’re prepared for college, career, or the military—like earning post-secondary credit, an industry credential, or scoring well on the ACT/SAT/ASVAB.

Four ways to become a CCR Graduate:

1.ACT 21+ (or SAT 1060+), or

2.Earn 1 or more Post Secondary Credit or

3.Earn a Preferred TDOE promoted industry credential, or

4.Earn a Valued and 1 other TDOE promoted industry credential, or

5.Score 31 on the ASVAB AFQT

How To Earn Postsecondary Credit

Postsecondary credit can be earned throug EPSOs (Early Postsecondary Opportunities) which are high school courses that let students earn college credit or technical school hours while still in high school

Advanced Placement (AP), created by the College Board, lets high school students take college-level courses and earn postsecondary credit or placement by scoring well on AP exams.

Local Dual Credit (LDC) is a high school course tied to a local college class. Students who pass the exam earn postsecondary credits recognized by that college.

Dual Enrollment (DE) lets high school students take college courses and earn credit for both high school and postsecondary.

What is an Industry Credential and How to Earn One

An industry credential (IC) is a certification or qualification recognized by employers that demonstrates an individual has acquired specific skills and competencies needed for a particular job or industry. These credentials are issued by industry associations, certifying bodies, or professional organizations and can range from entry-level certifications to advanced professional licenses. Students have the opportunity to earn ICs through Bradley County Schools CTE programs at the secondary and postsecondary levels.

Dual Credit Dual Enrollment

Earn College Credit While in High School

Dual credit and dual enrollment programs allow high school students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously by taking college-level courses. These programs are offered through partnerships between our high schools and local colleges and universities. Dual credit courses are taught at the high school by qualified instructors, while dual enrollment courses typically take place on a college campus or online.

Massey Electric Company: Powering the Future Workforce

Massey Electric Company was awarded the Tennessee Flagship Industry Partner Award for their collaboration with Bradley County Schools, Bradley Central, Walker Valley, and PIE Innovation Center. According to the TDOE, “Tennessee Flagship Industry Partners are employers whose partnerships with their local school districts have significantly improved student outcomes.”

Founded in 1957, Massey Electric Company is a family-owned electrical contractor with locations in Alcoa and Cleveland, Tennessee. Known for excellence and community commitment, Massey was among the first partners to invest in a training space at the PIE Center, preparing the next generation of skilled workers.

In collaboration with the PIE Center, Massey Electric helped develop a Department of Labor–approved Pre-Apprenticeship Program, set to launch in spring 2026. This initiative will provide students with foundational electrical skills, industry exposure, and mentorship from experienced professionals giving them a head start in the workforce and allowing them to complete a year oftheir future apprenticeship early.

The partnership is strengthened by a PIE instructor who began his career at Massey and now trains students full-time while continuing to teach in Massey’s apprenticeship program in the evenings. His dual role ensures students receive instruction aligned with current industry standards and practices. Together, Massey Electric and the PIE Innovation Center are creating a model for successful workforce development.
