Editor's NOTE

With a new prime minister in office, independent retailers are wondering whether business rates will finally get the reform promised by successive governments for more than a decade.

A ndy Burnham vowed throughout his Labour leadership campaign to do just that, pledging to overhaul the system and make cuts for retailers, pubs and hospitality businesses. He also promised to make high streets “the symbols of Britain’s renaissance” rather than markers of decline.

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre says that while the association welcomes the proposed plans, its members will remain sceptical until real change materialises: “We've heard promises of business rates reform before, not least from this government. But the reality for our members has been a 15 per cent increase in their bills this year. High streets are a barometer for the health and happiness of our towns and cities. Getting business rates right is one of the most important things any government can do to help them thrive.” Read more on pages 21-23.

Elsewhere in this issue, our pages are packed with SS27 buying ideas, exclusive interviews and business inspiration. We pick out some must-see new collections on pages 38-42, highlight key stands to visit at Harrogate Fashion Week on 6066 and round up some essential dates for your buying diary on 82-83

NEW VENUE AND DATE CONFIRMED FOR BOUTIQUE STAR AWARDS 2026 WINNERS’ PARTY

Th is year’s Boutique Star Awards winners’ party will take place on Tuesday 10 November at the Victory Services Club in central London, recognising the industry's most outstanding independent fashion retailers and suppliers. The evening celebration will be held in the venue's grand Carisbrooke Hall, beginning with a drinks reception followed by a three-course dinner and awards ceremony.

Located near Marble Arch, t he historic Seymour Street building has been home to a military members' club since the end of the Second World War. Today it is a registered charity, using income from its hospitality events and accommodation to fund support for service personnel, veterans and their families.

“ This year marks a new chapter for the Boutique Star Awards as we move to a new venue for the first time since 2022,” says publisher Julie Neill. “The Victory Services Club is a fantastic setting and Carisbrooke Hall is an incredible space for the celebration. We can’t wait to welcome everyone in November for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.”

Now in its sixth year, the awards celebrate excellence across 20 categories including Fashion Independent of the Year , Outstanding Business sponsored by City Goddess and Fashion Agency of the Year sponsored by Harrogate Fashion Week.

Five new categories have been introduced for 2026, including three for retailers: Independent Department Store of the Year, sponsored by City Goddess, Resilient Retailer of the Year

and Retailer Event of the Year. Two new supplier awards have also been added: Lifestyle and Accessories Brand of the Year and Tech Innovation of the Year. The reader-voted Favourite Supplier of the Year award will also return for a second year.

Entries are free for independent multi-brand retailers and suppliers, with businesses invited to outline their performance, strategy and what sets them apart via an online application. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of independent industry experts including respected indie retailers, agents and event organisers, with the shortlist announced in September.

Entries close on Friday 31 July. Full details and entry forms are available at boutique-magazine.co.uk/boutiquestar-awards-2026.

INDUSTRY UPDATE ESSENTIAL

MAY HEATWAVE BOOSTS NON-FOOD

RETAIL SALES

UK retailers recorded stronger sales in May as warm weather and seasonal promotions encouraged shoppers to spend on the high street and online, reveal figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Retail sales volumes increased by 1.2 per cent compared with April, while sales across the three months to May were up 0.4 per cent on the previous three-month period.

Non-food retailers were among the strongest performers, with department store sales volumes

THE FASHION HUDDLE RETURNS FOR SS27 WITH TWO AGENCIES

The Fashion Huddle is back for SS27, running until 13 August at 26–28 Hammersmith Grove, London. The collaborative showroom has reverted to its original single-location format, bringing together almost 100 brands. Joining the line-up this season are JUST Consultanciesshowcasing Nobody’s Child, ICHI and Florère - and new agency JEMM Collective, founded by former Joseph Ribkoff director Mark Rowe. Returning agents include The Brand Ambassadors, Magpie Agency, Richman Brands and Joanna Edwards Agency (thefashionhuddle.co.uk).

rising by 2.7 per cent over the three months to May - the largest three-monthly increase since September 2024.

O nline retail, meanwhile, experienced a particularly strong month as sales volumes rose 6.1 per cent - marking the strongest monthly increase since February 2025 and reaching their highest level since January 2022. The proportion of all retail sales made online also edged up from 28.1 per cent in April to 28.8 per cent in May.

NEWS FOR FASHION INDIES

Despite the rise, Harvir Dhillon, economist at the British Retail Consortium, warns the figures should be viewed in context: “While the sunshine provided a short-term boost, retailers continue to face significant challenges,” he says. “Household budgets remain stretched, consumer confidence is fragile and operating costs are rising.”

Fashion shoppers willing to pay for fast delivery

Almost a third of UK consumers would choose a two-hour delivery service for fashion purchases if available, reveals new research by Zippd. The logistics technology company’s Instant Commerce Index found that 31 per cent of shoppers would be prepared to pay more for the option if available, rising to 49 per cent among those aged 25 to 34. The concept is already being explored by indies in London through online marketplace Need It For Tonight (NIFT), showing how fast local fulfilment could help small shops compete on convenience.

ROYAL MAIL CHRISTMAS COLLECTION CAP COULD IMPACT INDIES

A new cap on daily business collections could leave indies struggling to fulfil orders during the crucial Christmas trading period, warns Bira. Royal Mail has informed businesses that collection capacity will be limited to a maximum of three times their usual daily volume during November and December. Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre says many indie retailers experience a far greater seasonal surge, with some

seeing order volumes increase by 15 to 20 times their typical levels.

“We urge Royal Mail to look again at how this will affect smaller senders”

“We would urge Royal Mail to look again at how this cap will affect smaller senders, and to work with the small business community to find a more flexible approach during the peak trading period,” he says.

BIRA WELCOMES BURNHAM’S BUSINESS RATES REFORM PLEDGE

Th e British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has welcomed new prime min i ster Andy Burnham’s pledge to reform business rates and revitalise the high street, but warns retailers need action rather than more political promises.

B ira CEO Andrew Good a cre says its members have reacted with “cautious scepticism” following repeated promises from successive governments to overhaul the system, adding that the average high street retailer has

seen bills increase by 15 per cent this year alone.

“ We genuinely welcome the intention behind Mr Burnham’s commitment, and we would very much welcome the opportunity to find a true and meaningful solution that supports the high streets that are so vital to communities across the UK,” he says.

“ High streets are a barometer for the health and happiness of our towns and cities. Getting business rates right is one of the most important things any government can do to help them thrive.”

Le ading womenswear trade show Harrogate Fashion Week (HFW) is set to showcase over 250 brands when it returns to the spa town this August - giving retailers the opportunity to complete all their new-season buying in one single trip.

T he three-day event has grown considerably in recent years and now encompasses four halls of exhibitors spanning womenswear, footwear, accessories, jewellery, occasionwear, lingerie and swimwear.

"One of the things we often hear is how valuable buyers find the show because they can do so much in a single trip," says show director Georgia Flynn. "Time is valuable, so being able to compare collections, discover new brands, catch up with suppliers and network with other independent retailers is one of the reasons HFW has become a must-attend event on many buyers' calendars."

Buying destination

Taking place in Harrogate's centrally located Convention Centre, the show is easy to reach by road, rail and air. Leeds Bradford Airport is located 25 minutes away, with daily flights arriving from Ireland, while the venue also offers convenient on-site parking for those travelling by car.

“ Visiting HFW is a no-brainer for us,” says Tiffany Moore, owner of Renes Fashion in Lancaster. “There’s parking near the venue, brilliant hotels and a wealth of fantastic restaurants to wind down in after a full day of buying. It turns a work trip into a mini retreat and we always come away feeling inspired.”

Meeting place

Alongside product sourcing, visitors can also attend complimentary networking events. HFW's daily coffee, pastry and prosecco happy hours give buyers the chance to catch up with brands and fellow retailers, while its popular Summer Party offers another opportunity for the industry to get together over drinks, canapés and live music. “Buyers love the atmosphere and the chance to reconnect with people from across the industry," says Flynn. "Of course, there’s business to be done. But the show also provides the perfect opportunity to build relationships, discover new ideas and get inspired about the season ahead.”

WILLING TO TRAVEL

As consumers increasingly seek experiences over convenience, independent retailers have a growing opportunity to become destinations worth travelling to. Richard Saunders, partner at Hartnell Taylor Cook, explores why fashion is helping drive footfall back to Britain's high streets…

ASHKAN FOROUZANI ON UNSPLASH

Crowd Pleasers

FASHION IS OUTPERFORMING THE WIDER RETAIL MARKET AS UNIQUE SHOPS AND RETAIL DESTINATIONS HELP DRIVE FOOTFALL BACK ONTO THE HIGH STREET,

SAYS RICHARD SAUNDERS AT HARTNELL TAYLOR COOK

De spite continued pressure on retail, fashion is quietly outperforming other categories.

According to ONS data, clothing sales have grown 5.3 per cent year on year compared with retail growth of 3.2 per cent overall, suggesting the sector has now moved beyond recovery into a more sustainable growth phase.

While retailers continue to face challenges, the latest figures point to pockets of future growth and an outlook that looks more promising. This year’s warm weather has already provided a timely boost for many fashion businesses, reminding us just how quickly demand can return when conditions improve.

T hat should give independent retailers reason for cautious

optimism. Fashion has always been cyclical, but once confidence begins to return, consumers quickly rediscover the appetite to refresh their wardrobes. Those improvements don't always have to be driven by the economy. A new trend, change in season or desire to discover something different can all encourage shoppers back onto the high street and into physical stores.

Bricks-and-mortar fashion retail continues to offer something online cannot: experience, discovery and human interaction. And those qualities are becoming increasingly valuable as consumers seek more than mere convenience.

Confidence returns

Alongside rising fashion sales, confidence is also returning to the high

street. Investors are once again backing retail, helping to create better shopping environments and encouraging brands to invest in physical locations.

For a long time, some retail spaces simply haven't met the needs of modern shoppers. But town centres are being increasingly reshaped into destinations where fashion, food and leisure complement one another, giving consumers more reasons to spend time on the high street rather than simply making a quick purchase online.

For independent retailers, this presents an opportunity. Boutiques offering carefully curated collections, expert service and a distinctive shopping experience are well placed to benefit as consumers increasingly value experience alongside product. The market is

making room for quality retail and memorable in-store experiences to exist alongside the convenience of online shopping rather than competing with it.

Shopping destination

While the capital is known for its retail offer, some of the most exciting developments are happening outside London. Regional cities are stepping up their game in destination retail, with fashion playing a central role in creating vibrant shopping districts that attract consumers from further afield.

When people plan holidays, they often look for unique experiences, interesting neighbourhoods and somewhere with a genuine sense of place. Increasingly, shoppers are looking for those same qualities closer to home, favouring destinations that offer discovery and personality over homogenised high streets dominated by the same chain stores.

Fashion retailers are often at the heart of those destinations. Cafés, restaurants and leisure businesses undoubtedly contribute to the atmosphere, but fashion frequently provides the initial reason for

DESTINATION THINKING

Curate an experience: Give shoppers a reason to visit, not just buy.

Show off your personality: Let customers get to know your business through social media and in-store experiences.

Love thy neighbours: Work with local cafés and neighbouring retailers to help create a destination shopping area.

Keep evolving: Introduce new brands, refresh displays and give customers something new to discover.

shoppers to visit, creating the footfall that supports the wider retail mix.

Bristol's Park Street is a prime example. Its combination of established retailers and carefully selected new arrivals has created a shopping destination with genuine personality, demonstrating how thoughtful curation can breathe new life into a retail district.

Bath is another success story. A strong mix of tourism, affluent residents and limited out-of-town competition has helped create a city centre where fashion continues to thrive. Streets such as Stall Street and New Bond Street reward shoppers with a genuine sense of discovery, encouraging visitors to explore rather than simply complete a transaction.

Character building

Successful retail has always reflected changing consumer habits, and today’s most successful fashion businesses are those offering something shoppers cannot easily find elsewhere.

R ather than competing on scale alone, independent retailers are succeeding by creating distinctive identities, carefully curated product mixes and memorable customer

experiences. Personal service and individuality remain significant advantages that online retailers simply cannot replicate.

O verall, the long-term outlook for retail appears more positive than it has for some time, with sustained demand giving reason for cautious optimism. Fashion, in particular, feels poised for growth. Leading brands are once again seeking high-quality space in the right regional locations, reinforcing the strength of the sector.

The resurgence of retailers such as Marks & Spencer also demonstrates that established businesses can reinvent themselves and reconnect with shoppers when they evolve alongside changing consumer expectations.

As retail continues to evolve, fashion is not just participating in the recovery but helping to lead it. In the right locations, and with the right curation, it remains one of the most powerful drivers of footfall and place-making, proving that in today's market, distinctiveness matters far more than scale.

7 reasons to enter the Boutique Star Awards

FROM CELEBRATING YOUR TEAM'S ACHIEVEMENTS TO INSPIRING FELLOW INDEPENDENTS, THIS YEAR'S JUDGES REVEAL WHY ENTERING THE BOUTIQUE STAR AWARDS COULD BE ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS YOU MAKE FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Understandably, writing an awards entry probably isn't at the top of your to-do list right now. When you're juggling deliveries, buying appointments, social media, staffing and customers, putting an awards submission together can feel like a luxury. Yet every member of this year's judging panel believes entering is time well spent.

Of course, the chance of lifting a trophy in November is a pretty good incentive. But there are plenty of other reasons to enter too - and many of the benefits begin before the winners are even announced...

1. You'll probably realise you’ve achieved more than you think I ndependent retailers are famously modest. What feels like ‘just doing your job’ every day can be exactly what makes your business worthy of an award. “Some of the strongest businesses undersell themselves because they assume what they do is standard practice," says Harrogate Fashion Week director Georgia Flynn. “In reality, it's often really impressive.” C atherine Erdly, founder of The Resilient Retail Club, agrees, adding: “Believe in yourself. If you're struggling for ideas on what to include, ask your team or best customers. The best retailers hold themselves to high standards and truly look after their customers because, ultimately, happy customers create a long-lived business.”

2.

It’s

a chance to step back from the day job

Running an independent business rarely leaves much time for reflection. And that’s exactly why Diane Sykes believes writing an awards entry can be invaluable in itself.

“ The entry process will make you think carefully about the business, which can help solidify its core values,” she says. “It's good to be reminded of what you're doing well. That alone can bring a huge sense of pride.”

C lare Bailey, founder of The Retail Champion, echoes the sentiment, encouraging businesses to use the process to properly evaluate everything they've built. “Sometimes you're simply too close to your own success to appreciate it,” she says.

3. Recognition has never mattered more

Independent retailers continue to face rising costs, cautious consumer spending and fierce competition, making it more important than ever to celebrate those who are thriving.

“Our independents are facing their most challenging time in modern history,” says Sykes. “This is the reason we must celebrate the true success stories.”

B ira CEO Andrew Goodacre agrees, adding that recognising outstanding businesses can benefit the entire sector. “There are some superb examples of quality independent retailers in the UK and we should recognise these star businesses,” he says. “Not only does it remind us what great independent retail looks like, but it also helps other businesses learn from their success.”

4. Size isn’t everything

If you think you can't enter because your business isn't big enough, the judges couldn't disagree more. “It's not about huge turnover,” says Deryane Tadd, owner of The Dressing Room. “It's what you're achieving with the space that you have.”

Whether it's customer loyalty, innovation or creating exceptional retail experiences, smaller businesses often punch well above their weight. “You definitely don't need huge numbers to stand out,” adds Flynn. “Judges understand that success looks different for every business. Indies often have amazing customer relationships, strong communities and really clear brand identities, which can be equally impressive.”

5. Your story is worth telling

While judges want to see clear markers of success, they also want to understand the people behind the business. “The best entries tell a story,” says Goodacre. “Submitting the relevant evidence is important, but I like to see the personality of the business come through more than anything.” Erdly adds: “The writing doesn't have to be super polished; we love it when entries have a bit of humour.”

D awson believes the strongest submissions also demonstrate a clear understanding of the customer, show confidence in brand positioning and explain the thinking behind key business decisions. “It's not just about what you've done - it's about clearly showing why your actions made you stand out and how they delivered results,” he says.

6. It can become one of your best marketing tools

Awards don't just impress industry peers - they resonate with customers too.

B ailey believes recognition can “build credibility, improve customer trust, strengthen supplier relationships and create powerful marketing opportunities.”

Sykes agrees, adding that being shortlisted gives retailers something to celebrate with staff and customers, while creating "hours and hours of social media coverage.” She adds: “There's really no downside to entering, just positivity.”

7. You’ll never know unless you enter

Every year, judges discover businesses doing remarkable things that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. But they can only judge the entries they receive. “Don't be afraid to champion your own success,” says Dawson. “Many businesses are doing incredible things but don't always stop to recognise it.”

E rdly agrees. “We don't just want to see big businesses,” she says. “We want to see small businesses connecting with their communities, growing teams, helping people and having fun. Believe in yourself and go for it.”

S o, if you've been wondering whether to enter this year's Boutique Star Awards , maybe now's the time to set a few hours aside and put the wheels in motion.

INDUSTRY OPINION

MUM’S THE WORD

Founded by bridal industry experts Jo Stott and Brogan Owen, new North Shields independent Ānela is rethinking how retailers cater for modern mothers of the bride and groom. Here the pair reveal why combining contemporary occasionwear with a dedicated customer experience is giving mothers the celebration they've long been missing…

BROGAN OWEN AND JO STOTT

Keeping mum

AFTER SPENDING YEARS HELPING BRIDES FIND THE PERFECT DRESS, ĀNELA FOUNDERS JO STOTT AND BROGAN OWEN REALISED A VITAL PERSON WAS BEING OVERLOOKED. GEMMA WARD VISITS THEIR NEW NORTH SHIELDS BOUTIQUE WHERE MOTHERS OF THE BRIDE RECEIVE THE STAR TREATMENT

Within five months of opening, the success of North Shields boutique Ānela has already surpassed co-founders Jo Stott and Brogan Owen’s expectations. “We've had women travelling all the way from London and Edinburgh to see us. Demand has been so strong that we’ve had to keep buying in new stock. We’ve even designed our ownlabel collection.”

C atering exclusively for modern mothers of the bride and groom, their 900 sq ft appointment-only store is heavily focused on experience. The founders say the store echoes the treatment daughters receive while shopping for wedding dresses, but specifically for the mums: “We couldn’t find anywhere dedicated to them,” says Stott. “Mothers deserve their own appointment and their own celebration without feeling like an afterthought.”

T he pair was also determined to break away from more traditional mother-ofthe-bride wear to create a product mix that today’s women actually want to wear: “There has been a very fixed idea of what a 50-year-old woman should look like,” says Owen. “But mothers want to show their shoulders; they want to wear colour and have fun with fashion again.”

Unforgettable experience

Ā nela’s customers are each given a dedicated hourlong one-to-one appointment, where they have the entire space to themselves. They can come alone or bring their daughters or partners, but the focus is always on creating a relaxed environment where they can feel confident and fully focused on their own outfit for the big day.

E ach session begins in the boutique’s light-filled lounge, where Stott and Owen ask questions about the wedding and - crucially - how the mother of the bride wants to feel on the day. “It's often about finding the right answers early on, building rapport and removing any anxiety,” says Stott. “Everything is about making our mums feel comfortable and creating an experience that’s completely centred around them.”

Customers are then guided through the boutique’s range, which includes modern occasionwear pieces from brands such as Kevan Jon, Richard Designs, Gabriela Sanchez, Maisonel and Sonia Peña. The offer also includes headwear by Max and Ellie and LH Millinery. “We work with designers who might lean towards more classic occasionwear, but we’ll often buy the less traditional styles from their collections because that's what our customer wants,” says Owen.

T he co-founders buy together, visiting Harrogate Fashion Week to source new brands and travelling outside of the country to supplier showrooms. “We love buying together - we have a fun dynamic and naturally balance each other out.”

“Mothers deserve their own experience without feeling like an afterthought”

T he pair have just returned from a trip to Barcelona, where they were personally invited to view a new modern mother-of-the-bride capsule. “The brand discovered us through social media,” says Stott. “They had t hree shops in England that they wanted as stockists, and we were one of them.”

Yet getting the buying right has proved to be one of the pair’s biggest challenges – especially in the beginning: “Making sure we had the right designers wasn’t always easy because, as a new business, we didn’t know who was going to walk through the door,” says Owen. “But we knew exactly what we wanted to offer from the start, and we’ve stuck to that vision.”

To fill in any gaps, Owen – a trained fashion designer – also created Ānela’s own-label capsule, which launched shortly after the boutique opened. Its debut designs are all named after the co-founders’ family members and have been hugely popular with customers. “Everything in the range is designed to be comfortable enough to wear all day while still feeling elevated,” says Owen. “There’s a focus on colour, architectural details and beautiful draping that flatters the body. The fabrics are quite simple, allowing the cut and construction to do the talking. We want women to feel glamorous, but in a timeless and classy way.”

P rices at the boutique range from £300 to £1,000 while pieces from the Ānela label cost between £500 - £800. But according to the owners, price is rarely a deciding factor: “It’s somewhat irrelevant to many customers,” says Stott. “If she feels amazing in something, she’s going to buy it.”

Break with tradition

B oth Owen and Stott are well in tune with what mother of the brides want having previously worked in the wedding industry for many years. Stott ran a successful bridal boutique for 10 years, later moving into bridal consultancy and, more recently, celebrancy through her business, Love Jo. Owen, meanwhile, studied fashion design before working alongside bridal designers creating bespoke gowns. Later, she managed a bridal boutique before moving into consultancy herself.

The pair first met in 2018 when Owen interviewed for a role at Stott's bridal boutique. After working together for several years, Stott sold the business and went on to train bridal retailers around the world. Owen later followed a similar path, and they both found themselves helping bridal retailers deliver the very best customer experience.

B ut it wasn't until both experienced shopping for mother of the bride wear personally in 2025 – when Brogan got married in Las Vegas and Jo’s daughter Abbie married in Northumberland’s Kielder Forest –that the idea for Ānela was born: “We suddenly became the customer and experienced first-hand how difficult it was to find somewhere dedicated to mums” explains Stott. “With all our experience, we realised there was a big gap in the market that we could fill.”

Building a business

P lans for Ānela – meaning ‘angel’ in Hawaiian - quickly snowballed when the pair found the perfect unit inside a recently restored Victorian building also housing independent bars, restaurants, an event space and even a wedding venue. “We didn't necessarily want a traditional shop front - we wanted somewhere that felt like an experience,” says Stott. “The Exchange 1856 is a beautiful setting with a wonderful feel. Customers can come and spend the entire day here; they can celebrate special events and even get married. That was a really big selling point for us.”

B ut the available space, positioned on the ground floor of the building, was formerly a printer's and required a complete transformation. Fortunately, Stott's husband - a builder - was able to help create the calming sanctuary the pair had envisaged. “The unit was originally bright blue and orange, so it looked nothing like it does now,” says Stott. “In just two months we completely stripped it back, built the fitting rooms and rewired the electrics. We all pulled together, and it was amazing how much we got done in such a short space of time.”

Ā nela soft launched in February, with awareness quickly spreading through word of mouth, social media and partnerships with local wedding venues. “We’re trying lots of routes that aren’t traditional bridal marketing,” says Owen. “We’ve hosted open days with wedding venues and are looking at future collaborations with other businesses. We’re also advertising and appearing in business magazines, local publications and podcasts. But we’re seeing more and more mothers discovering us through TikTok.”

Happily ever after

D espite only opening this year, the founders are already thinking well beyond Tyneside. Their ambition is to build Ānela into a recognised national brand, opening further boutiques while branching out into wholesale with their own-label. “We don't want Ānela to remain as just one boutique in North Shields,” says Stott. “We'd love to have numerous stores around the country.”

Working with other independent retailers is part of the vision, although the pair are keen to grow at the right pace. “We’d like Ānela to be stocked in a small number of carefully chosen boutiques,” says Owen. “We want to work with fellow retailers who share our vision and can help move the mother-ofthe-bride category forward.”

For now, however, it’s the day-to-day interactions with customers that continue to motivate them. “I genuinely love coming to work every day,” says Owen. “Seeing the transformation in the mums who come through the door is the most rewarding part of what we do.”

A longside Ānela, Stott continues to run Love Jo - one of the country's busiest celebrancy businesses - meaning she still spends much of her time helping couples celebrate their weddings. “Our ultimate ambition is to help redefine modern mother-of-thebride fashion,” she says. “Everything comes back to celebrating women and making mothers feel every bit as special as everyone else on the wedding day.”

B ut for both founders, the most exciting part of the launch is being on the cusp of change within the industry: “Mother-of-the-bride fashion simply hasn't evolved in the right way alongside the needs of modern women,” Owen concludes. “We’re here to help make that happen.”

“If we had the chance to do it all over again, we absolutely would”

POMODORO ’S HEMANT AND NOREEN PURI REFLECT ON 35 YEARS OF BUILDING AN INDEPENDENT FASHION BRAND AS THEY PREPARE TO UNVEIL THEIR FINAL COLLECTION

Si nce launching womenswear brand Pomodoro in the early 1990s, husband-and-wife team Noreen and Hemant Puri have steered the brand to success while staying true to their original vision. Here they reveal why putting people at the heart of the brand is their biggest achievement

What’s the reaction been since you announced your retirement?

We’ve been overwhelmed by the warmth, kindness and support shown by our customers, agents and suppliers. What has touched us most is hearing from people who have been part of the Pomodoro story for decades - some retailers have stocked the brand since the very beginning, and many agents and customers have become lifelong friends. While there’s naturally a sense of sadness that this chapter is coming to an end, we feel enormously grateful.

What are you most proud of?

The relationships we’ve built. Knowing that we’ve played a small part in the lives of so many retailers, colleagues and women over the years is something we’ll cherish long after the final collection has been delivered.

How has the industry changed since your first collection?

Retail was much more relationship-driven and local back then. Buyers often had greater autonomy, stores tended to have a stronger individual identity, and business was conducted at a gentler pace. The best retailers today have embraced technology while retaining the personal service, expertise and sense of community that makes them special.

What role have indie retailers played in Pomodoro's success?

We wouldn't be where we are today without their support. When we started the business, indies trusted our vision, invested in our collections and helped introduce Pomodoro to their customers. Their feedback, insight and encouragement have helped shape our collections.

What's your favourite memory from the past 35 years?

Building Pomodoro together as husband and wife. Sharing the highs and lows, overcoming challenges, celebrating successes and turning a vision into reality has been an extraordinary experience.

What key lessons have you learned?

Trends come and go, markets rise and fall, but trust, integrity and loyalty are what sustain a business over the long term.

How would you describe the evolution of Pomodoro over the years?

We’ve moved from simple co-ordinated collections to carefully curated ranges with richer colour palettes, exclusive prints and more considered styling. As the business grew, so did our confidence and ambition. We began exploring new sourcing destinations around the world, bringing new ideas and fresh creativity to the brand. This allowed us to evolve beyond our original collections, while remaining true to the colourful, feminine handwriting that has always defined Pomodoro.

What can buyers expect from the SS27 collection?

It’s a celebration of everything Pomodoro stands for, bringing together vibrant colour, beautiful prints, feminine dresses and effortless silhouettes. We are finishing on a high.

What do you think you'll miss most about Pomodoro?

T he people and the excitement and anticipation that comes with creating each new collection. There's something very special about taking an idea from a sketch and watching it evolve into a collection.

What won't you miss?

T he sleepless nights that come with running a business! The industry has become increasingly fastpaced, and there's always another collection to design, deadline to meet and challenge to solve. It will be nice to step away from the relentless calendar that fashion demands and not be thinking six months, or even a year, ahead all the time.

Is there anything you would have done differently?

We’d probably embrace digital technology much earlier. We might also have spent a little more time celebrating milestones along the way and remind our younger selves to enjoy the journey a little more and worry a little less. But we have no regrets. We feel incredibly fortunate to have spent 35 years doing something we loved, alongside people we admired and respected. If we had the chance to do it all over again, we absolutely would.

How would you like Pomodoro to be remembered by the industry?

Hopefully not just for the collections, but for the way we conducted business. We have always believed that success comes from treating people well. We never set out to be the biggest; we simply wanted to create a brand that people respected, trusted and enjoyed working with.

What are you most looking forward to in retirement?

Time to slow down a little, spend more time with family and friends, and enjoy the freedom to make plans. We’re excited about travelling more, discovering new places and revisiting some of our favourite destinations at a more leisurely pace. While we’re saying goodbye to the business, we’re very much looking forward to what comes next.

Where can buyers see the final collection?

We’ll be showing at INDX Woman and Harrogate Fashion Week, at our London showroom and via our fantastic sales agents. We look forward to welcoming customers old and new, not only to see the collection but also to celebrate and thank them for their support over the years.

WE CARE WHAT YOU WEAR

“Indies deserve to compete fairly - too many don’t have that chance”

BIRA CEO ANDREW GOODACRE ON THE CHEAP IMPORT PROBLEM DAMAGING FASHION INDIES

There’s an underlying threat on the industry that doesn’t make headlines in the same way retail crime does, yet it’s doing just as much damage. I’m talking about ultra-low-cost clothing arriving in the country from overseas platforms, selling for prices that no British independent could match and –crucially - that no UK business could legally offer even if it wanted to…

The current £135 duty de minimis value Customs Duty threshold means that imported goods arrive largely free of the tariffs and taxes. The result is a playing field that is not just uneven, but structurally tilted against independent retailers.

Every indie shop owner in Britain is paying overheads and pricing products accordingly. Meanwhile, the website selling a dress for £8 from an international warehouse is paying none of those things - and the rules as they stand do not require it to.

This is not a niche concern. Bira members regularly tell us that customers comment about seeing similar products online for a fraction of the price, and that the conversation about value is becoming more difficult. Womenswear

indies are particularly exposed. The categories that fast fashion platforms target most aggressively also form the backbone of many boutique ranges. And the volume at which these platforms operate means the pressure is constant.

What makes this frustrating is that the solution is not complicated. Closing or significantly lowering the duty threshold would not fix everything, but it would remove one of the most glaring structural advantages that overseas platforms currently exploit. It would mean that goods sold into the UK market are competing on something closer to equal terms and also send a signal that the government takes the sustainability of the businesses that give our high streets their character seriously.

We have been making this case consistently, and we will keep making it. But I want womenswear indies to know that this is a fight we consider very much our own. The boutiques our members run are not just businesses - they are destinations where customers come for advice, expertise and a shopping experience no algorithm can replicate. They deserve to compete fairly. Right now, too many of them are not being given that chance.

“Your sales data is one of the most valuable buying tools you have”

RETAIL CHAMPION CLARE BAILEY ON PERFECTING YOUR SS27 BUY

On e of the biggest misconceptions in independent retail is that successful buying is all about predicting the next big trend. In reality, the strongest buying decisions usually start much closer to home.

B efore you place a single order, take a step back and look at what your own business has already told you. Your sales data is one of the most valuable buying tools you have, yet it's often one of the most overlooked.

Every transaction tells a story. Which brands sold through quickly? Which sizes were always in demand? Which colours outstayed their welcome on the rails? Which products generated full-price sales, and which only moved once they were discounted?

T he answers are already there.

T hat doesn't mean buying becomes a purely mathematical exercise. Independent boutiques have built their reputation on instinct, personality and knowing their customers. Data shouldn't replace that, but it should give you the confidence to use it more effectively.

O ne of the first areas I encourage retailers to review is sell-through. Rather than focusing purely on what sold, ask yourself how quickly it sold and at what margin. A dress that sold out in three weeks at full price tells a very different story from one that eventually sold after several rounds of markdowns.

It's also worth looking beyond individual products. Patterns often emerge when you step back. You may discover that certain price points consistently outperform others, that your customers favour one silhouette over another, or that a particular supplier delivers reliable performance season after season.

Just as importantly, identify what didn't work. Many retailers sometimes hold onto unsuccessful buying

decisions because they remember why they loved the product. Customers don't buy based on how much you liked something - they buy based on whether it fits their lifestyle, budget and needs.

B eing honest about those lessons makes you a stronger buyer next season. Of course, data only tells you what has happened. It won't spot an emerging trend or predict a sudden shift in consumer behaviour. That's where your experience comes in. The sweet spot is combining commercial evidence with market awareness and a genuine understanding of your customer.

T he best buying plans are rarely built around chasing every new trend, but protecting proven winners, introducing carefully chosen newness and leaving enough flexibility to react as the season unfolds.

S o, before your next buying appointment, spend an afternoon with last season's sales reports. You may find that the most valuable advice for the season ahead isn't coming from a supplier’s showroom at all – it’s already sitting in your till data.
