A Letter from the Executive Director Greetings Friends! I hope you are all doing well during these unprecedented times. We continue to be grateful for the doctors, nurses, police, fire, Village of Bolingbrook, and of course our own Bolingbrook Park District employees who have all been on the front lines during this COVID-19 period. Our Board of Commissioners and staff want to extend our gratitude and appreciation to you as well. We have heard positive feedback regarding programs and services we could offer during the quarantine. We appreciate your patience as continue to navigate through the State of Illinois Restore Illinois Plan. There is no greater joy than to hear laughter in our facilities, on our playgrounds, and people golfing, fishing, and swimming. Bolingbrook Park District has kept to our mission of providing world-class parks and recreation services in a fiscally responsible manner to enhance the community’s quality of life throughout this challenging time. One example of this is our commitment to fiscal responsibility through the nearly $2 million reduction in operational and capital in 2020. At the same time, we are progressing forward with our referendum projects at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, lazy river island at Pelican Harbor, the pathway connection, and playgrounds. Our team is committed to this mission and the excellence it represents. These times have resulted in some new and creative programming throughout the spring and summer. This will continue into the fall. We invite you to visit our website to experience our new Digital Fall Program Guide. We will continue to evolve and meet your programming needs in this ever-changing environment. Board of Commissioners Meeting Information The Bolingbrook Park District Board of Commissioners have scheduled board meetings the third Thursday of each month. Normally, these meetings are held in the Board Room at the Annerino Community Center (201 Recreation Drive). With the Phase 4 Guidelines of the State of Illinois’ Restore Illinois Plan, these meetings are now held virtually via ZOOM. Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex Renovation Project

Walls going up for family changing rooms. ___________________________________ Five months into the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex renovation project and progress is ahead of schedule. Contractors are busy with the following items: • Building concrete wall for new locker rooms • Installing water lines to showers • Drywall being finished in the multi-purpose room including first coats of paint • Rooftop HVAC units installed and connected to ductwork

As work continues to move forward, finished work begins with plumbing and masonry inside the locker rooms, painting the hallway leading to the indoor pool, and new tile is set to be installed in October. “We’re in great shape,” said Chris Corbett, Superintendent of Projects & Planning. “We hope to have substantial completion of the project by November and be ready to open by the start of 2021.” For more information about all the projects as a result of the successful 2018 referendum ask, please visit www.bolingbrookparks.org/ referendum.

Time Capsule Opened After 25 Years

Tuesday, August 11 marked exactly 50 years since the referendum was passed that created Bolingbrook Park District. To celebrate, the time capsule that was sealed under the con-

crete at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex was opened. It had been placed there in March of 1995, just before the building was built. After Executive Director, Ron Oestreich, and a number of staff members took a sledge hammer to break it open, all that was found were a few cups, a Bolingbrook Park District flag, a few stickers with the 25th anniversary logo, and some washed away sheets of paper

that could have been letters or pictures. “It definitely was exciting to open it in front of our staff,” said Oestreich. “Even though those items have been soaking for a few decades, we were happy to have it open.” Plans are already underway for the next time capsule to have opened in 2045 for the park district’s 75th anniversary. “We’ll make sure our focus is on waterproofing so those down the line can enjoy it and know what our experience was like in 2020,” said Oestreich.

Meijer Partnership Offers Free Nature Programs We’re excited to announce an exciting new partnership with Meijer of Bolingbrook. With their agreement, we’re able to offer free family-focused community programs at Hidden Oaks Conservation Area. The community responded quickly to the first program we offered, which was Reptile Rockstars on July 27. It sold out in less than 24 hours. Treasure Hunters took place August 11. The adventurers got to spend all day at Hidden Oaks Nature Center learning how to use a compass, what letterboxing is, how to follow maps, and geocaching. “To be able to offer these programs for free is a great opportunity for the community to connect with nature,” said John Chase, Superintendent of Facilities at Bolingbrook Park District. “We’re really fortunate that Meijer stepped up to help us bring so much joy to families in our community.” The next free nature programs are: • Mammal Mania: Wednesday, September 23, 6:00-7:00 pm • Hot Cider Hike: Friday, October 9, 6:007:00 pm Spaces are limited, so register online today at www.bolingbrookparks.org/freenatureprograms. New Programs Offered in Partnership with Bolingbrook Bank & Trust

Bolingbrook Park District to Provide E-Learning Support

_______________________ Bolingbrook Park District is excited to be offering a new slate of programs in partnership with Bolingbrook Bank & Trust (198 S. Bolingbrook Dr.). These programs will be taught by a professional banker and have been developed with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), “This is a great program for anyone wanting to learn the basics of a checking account, rebuilding credit, home buying information, and more,” said Diana Sorescu, Branch Manager of Bolingbrook Bank & Trust. One-day programs will be offered starting in September for both kids ages 10-14 and adults 15 years and older. The kid’s programs will serve as a guide for future responsibility and will cover things like understanding the difference of a want vs. a need. For adults, it’s never too late to learn about finances. These programs will understand and achieve goals and how to keep up with them, especially in this rapidly changing environment. “I love helping my community,” said Sorescu. “I am here to hopefully help people reach a goal. This is why I do this and enjoy every moment.” Each class is just $5 for residents. _______________________ Park District staff will provide supervision for Valley View School District (VVSD) students or Bolingbrook Park District residents, grades K-5th The Bolingbrook Park District is committed to supporting families during these difficult times. To provide working families during the e-learning process, the REACH Before/After School Program has been expanded to REACH All-Day Care to provide support at multiple facilities throughout Bolingbrook. Park District staff will provide supervision for Valley View School District (VVSD) students or Bolingbrook Park District residents, grades K-5th, as they guide themselves through their daily e-learning requirements.

Typically, the R.E.A.C.H. (Recreation Enhances A Child’s Health) program provides before/after school care for six Bolingbrook elementary schools. The REACH All Day Care is being offered as: 5-Day Options • Monday-Friday: (8:00 am-6:00 pm or 8:30 am-3:30 pm) 3-Day Options: • Monday/Wednesday/Friday (8:00 am-6:00 pm or 8:30 am-3:30 pm) • Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday: (8:00 am6:00 pm or 8:30 am-3:30 pm) Facilities for WIFI (as needed), use of the gymnasium, outdoor play areas, structured and unstructured table games, arts and crafts, and personal space/quiet time to relax, read and eat (during certain times or as needed). The staff at Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park received a 5-star overall rating in their audit of lifeguard and facility operations. This is the highest possible rating that can be achieved through the Starguard ELITE Aquatic Risk Prevention Audit. Of the six lifeguards individually audited, four of them received a 5-star rating and two received a 4-star rating. The way an audit works is that an auditor from Starguard ELITE comes to Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park unannounced. They secretly film a handful of lifeguards and review their performance based on positioning, scanning the pool, that they’re easily identifiable, their equipment is ready, have appropriate sun/ environmental protection, and lifeguard rotation. After the lifeguard evaluation is complete, the auditor enters the break room and introduces themselves to the lifeguard that are on break. They then test those lifeguards in a series of skills and scenarios that include: • CPR • Nose bleed situation • Unresponsive rescue in the pool (extrication) • Spinal Head/Neck injury where they put them on the board In all of these areas, the staff at Pelican Harbor received a 5-star rating. Additionally, the team got a 5-star rating for having the correct and current documentation, supervisor observation, and physical facility observation, which included things like cleanliness, having proper supplies, signage, and communication devices.

The process of training lifeguards this year was challenging due to COVID-19. Aquatic Manager Sarah Sielisch had to conduct the bulk lifeguard trainings via ZOOM. These trainings lasted up to 12 hours and covered CPR, First-Aid, and slide dispatch. “We got very creative!” said Sielisch. “We used pillows and stuffed animals, I showed them videos, and we’d all practice together. I would randomly call on them to answer questions to make sure they were paying attention. It was creative and different.” Once staff was allowed back into the facility, they had to complete an additional eight hours of training to cover new COVID-19 procedures and lifeguard renewal certifications. At the end of it all, the hard work payed off as the facility received an overall 5-star rating. “We’re very excited over here. Camp Connections Day Camp Brings Sense of Normalcy

One of the first programs to return as part of Phase 3 of the State of Illinois-Restore Illinois Plan was our day camp program back on June 22. It looked a little bit different than our traditional summer day camp “Camp Alotta Fun.” As camp ended the week of August 3, it was clear that kids enjoyed their summer. Camp saw nearly 300 kids come through. Even though kids couldn’t venture to Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park or the other trips that make Camp Alotta Fun so enjoyable, the team was successful at creating the best possible experience for the campers. Activities included: • Outside play – old school games with a twist like touchless relay and touchless tag • Had an Ice Cream Day where they created their own treats • Individual Finger Painting • Mat Musical Chairs “We really wanted to give kids an opportunity to forget about Coronavirus for a little bit and enjoy what camp really is: being outside most of the day and playing games,” said Jeremy White, Day Camp Coordinator. Jeremy has worked with the Bolingbrook

Park District Day Camp for eight years now and is a teacher at Plainfield South High School during the school year. Camp looked different, but kids returned with the same enthusiasm and energy as previous years. “Most of them have been stuck inside since March. Everyone was just excited to be around one another. The kids really seemed focus on this being their time to run around and have fun.” A lot of times parents have told me when they pick up their kids that they were worn out, which is a good sign,” said Jeremy. Jenna Pape is in her fourth year as a Day Camp Counselor and will be returning to Illinois State University as senior this fall to complete her Elementary Education degree. She echoed that the kids were very excited to come back and handled the social distancing and mask wearing guidelines without many issues. “I think that the hardest parts were keeping the kids 6-feet apart because they do get really excited about being around their friends,” said Jenna. “I think they handled it really well. At the beginning of camp, we just said how important it was to keep ourselves safe and our friends safe.” Some safety procedures that were put in place included: • Regular cleaning and disinfection of equipment will take place throughout the day. • Masks will be required when social distancing is not possible. • A 9:1 camper-to-counselor ratio (may be smaller for younger age groups) Even though camp was structured differently and had new guidelines, being with the kids, getting outside, and having fun didn’t change. “It was kind of nice to have a bit of normalcy back in our lives,” said Jenna.

NEW at Hidden Lakes Congrats to Shoreline Stabilization

Natural resources team installing coir logs Our Horticulture and Natural Resources Team have worked on stabilizing the shorelines at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm. By installing and back-filling coconut coir logs, this new stable shoreline will also receive native plant plugs and seeds. This process will repair the eroded and damaged pond shorelines.

Clear waters at Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm thanks to the new aeration system New aeration pumps and nine new “bubblers” were installed at Hidden Lakes Hidden Lakes Historic Trout Farm (475 Trout Farm Rd.) These will help infuse more oxygen into the ponds and help circulate the water, which can improve fish growth. In addition, it may help control the growth of invasive plants. There are now a total of 15 bubblers across the four ponds.

Chris Martner: Director of Buildings, Grounds, and Natural Resources • Been with Bolingbrook Park District since 2004. • Prior to Bolingbrook Park District, she was a Horticulturist at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle for 12 years. • Degrees: 1. Bachelor’s Degree from Aurora University in Education 2. Associates Degree from College of DuPage in Applied Science, Horticulture 3. Working towards her Master’s Degree from University of Illinois in Natural Resources and Environmental Science She oversees three direct reporting managers (Buildings Maintenance Manager, Parks Maintenance Manager, and Natural Resources, Horticulture, and Turf Manager), 27 other full-time staff, 22 permanent part-time staff, and 15 seasonal staff. Chris is in charge of 183,224 total square feet of building space, 50 parks, and over 1,100 acres of open space. This includes maintaining and repairing facilities, general maintenance, special projects, and upkeep of parks that include the renovation and repairs of all the baseball, softball, soccer, and football fields. Additionally, her team maintains the natural areas and trail systems; turf management, and horticultural displays. This includes turf, trees, shrubs and landscape areas as well as all of our trails, prairies, wetlands, woodlands, and savannahs. bolingbrookparks.org

New Youth Sports Program

Trenton enjoying his first day of micro-soccer This past July, Bolingbrook Park District announced its all-new youth sports program. Formally known as “Sportskids,” this new program is designed by Ryan Kertson, Athletics/ Facility Manager. Ryan started with Bolingbrook Park District in 2019 and quickly made positive changes. Changes included writing course curriculums, hiring and training a coaching staff,

and offering a week of free trial programs that quickly sold out. With his prior experience and feedback from the free classes, the first set of programs began in September with the following sports: Youth (ages 7 & up): • Basketball • Parent vs. Kids Sports Mania • Soccer • Volleyball • Floor Hockey Early Childhood (ages 2-6): • Junior Basketball • T-Ball • Sports Mania • Micro-Soccer “I’m excited to get out there and show kids how fun learning new sports are,” said Ryan. “I want everyone to know that if they sign-up, they’ll be involved, no matter the experience level.” Participants will: • Learn the fundamentals of each sports • Get quality, hands-on instruction from qualified and experienced coaches • Be included.
