‘Whimsy and weirdness’

In his latest work, Bozemanbased artist Jacob Garvin has been dabbling in rhinestone cowboys, adding a bit of camp and a whole lot of Western air to his collages.

His goal is to take disparate elements and combine them in a way that makes them look like they could be a photograph, if that photograph were taken in some distorted reality

incorporating psychedelia and fantasy. Garvin knows not everyone will appreciate the garish style, which often features partial or full nudity.

“You have to have a bit of open-mindedness for whimsy and weirdness,” he said, sporting an infectious smile during an interview at Studio Co ee Roasters on 11th Avenue and College Street in Bozeman, where his art will be on display through the end of the month.

Garvin’s work usually begins

with paper cutouts — most recently from a couple books of Western movie posters. But the art on the walls of Studio Co ee Roasters expands on the medium with a variety of materials. e mask of his “Houndstooth Bandit” is fabric, and a gold chain hangs around her neck. Real fringe covers the faces of a couple cowboys, a nod to masked country musician Orville Peck. Rhinestones and gold leaf add a bit of razzle dazzle, a la late Western-wear

designer Nudie Cohn, whose work inspired Garvin to start adding texture to his collages.

“He has the most amboyant, extravagant, amazing pieces,” Garvin said.

Cohn was essentially creating collages with fabric and rhinestones, Garvin said. In the mid 20th century, Cohn’s highly embellished suits were worn by singers such as Roy Rogers, Hank Williams, Glen Campbell, George Jones and the king himself, Elvis Presley.

ey became so popular, any such suit is now called a “Nudie suit,” and updated versions have graced modern artists such as Jenny Lewis, Lil Nas X and Post Malone. Perhaps even more inspiring, though, were Cohn’s Nudie mobiles — cars embellished with an over-the-top Cohn air. ere were embossed leather seats, dashes covered with silver dollars, pistol door handles and horseshoe hood ornaments.

Q: Did you see the movie version of “True Lies” before starting the series?

A: I was in a lucky position where I had never seen the film, so even before the pilot, I committed to not watching it because I know Jamie has an iconic performance. The last thing I want to do is an impression of Jamie Lee Curtis. I love her so much, I have so much respect for her, I didn’t want to absorb any of it.

When I auditioned for this, I got to literally just take the script for what it is and be like, “Okay, here’s (the character) Helen,” like I would have done at any audition. How can I make this pop? How can I make this a character I want to play? How can I make this super-funny? I got to organically just make it based off of (that).

Q: Do you feel that the “True Lies” series stands apart from the movie?

A: The DNA of the show is in the film, and there’s so many winks at it. And I think just because of the year it is, it already has that freshness to it. It’s the perfect amount of time between when the film happened and when we made this, because it’s not so close that you’re like, “Oh, I remember the other one.” Society has evolved, the actors are different, so we’re lucky in that way. It really makes it just kind of easy to be this fresh, new thing.

Q: “True Lies” is a very physical show. How did you prepare for that?

A: I like to say that I’m stupidly brave, so I kind of just assume I can do things when that’s not always the case. I’ve learned how to do everything that way ... riding horses, skiing. I had done gymnastics, so I tried to incorporate a little bit of that.

I had no idea how much I would need Pilates for this job. You physically have to be strong. I literally need the muscle that comes from that in order to do some of the work. I took a parkour class, and the other students were, like, 14 years old. So it was just me and boys, and I was weirdly trying to show off by dismounting on gymnastics bars and stuff –trying to look cool to my 14-year-old friends.

Ballpark food 2023 –

A big step up from peanuts and Crackerjack

Opening Day of the baseball season arrives this Thursday, March 30, signaling the official beginning of spring as well as the start of some pretty fine dining at ballparks across the country.

For the discriminating foodie who is planning on attending a game, they’ll find a veritable cornucopia of dining options, ranging from lobster rolls, filet mignon sliders and sushi to more traditional fare like hot dogs, burgers and pizza. And many parks have added new eateries, dishes and drinks for this year so if you can’t find anything to your liking, you’re just not trying.

Certainly Minute Maid Park, where the Houston Astros will open their 2023 campaign against the Chicago White Sox in a game airing on ESPN, has a few unusual items. One newcomer is the Grande Papas Nachos fries, which are topped with beef carnitas, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, crema and elote, which is grilled Mexican street corn. Delicioso.

If you’re in Los Angeles for the Dodgers’ home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, try Dodger Stadium’s new marriage of the classic helmet bowl to the California roll called – wait for it – the California Roll Bowl. This consists of imitation crab, sriracha aioli, edamame, carrots and cucumbers all served up over a bed of sushi rice, and is certainly not your father’s ballpark food.

Also for the health-conscious is the Red Curry Bowl at Oakland Coliseum, where the A’s open the

season against the L.A. Angels. This Thai-inspired creation is a tasty mix of grilled chicken, bell peppers and egg noodles that has gotten rave reviews from those who have previewed it. So you might want to try it, too.

Conversely, on the more caloric side is the Big Red Machine Burger at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark, where the Reds play the Pittsburgh Pirates. It’s a beef patty and smoked sausage topped with sauerkraut, beer cheese and crushed potato chips and served on a pretzel bun. Pace yourself for this is one big sandwich.

Meat lovers will also go in for the Ropa Vieja Bowl at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., where the Tampa Bay Rays get going for ‘23 against the Detroit Tigers. It’s a slow-roasted brisket paired with white rice, plantains, sauteed peppers and onions. What’s not to like?

And if you’re at Seattle’s Safeco Field, where the Mariners open ‘23 against the Cleveland Guardians, why not quench your thirst with an adult beverage?

One is the unquestionably unusual Buzz Margarita, a concoction of Mezcal, szechuan buttons and edible flowers topped with toasted grasshoppers. If you’re trying to cut down on your arthropod intake, you can opt for the Magenta Mojo cocktail, a mix of grapefruit, rose wine and hibiscus. Or you can just order a beer.

‘Psycho’ still demonstrates its terrifying power

The 1960 thriller that made, and largely has kept, many people wary of taking a shower – thanks to the fate of Norman Bates’ (Anthony Perkins) motel guest, embezzler Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) – “Psycho” is the Alfred Hitchcock movie many people think of first. The still-chilling film helps Turner Classic Movies wrap up its annual “31 Days of Oscar” month Friday, March 31. The picture was remade in 1998, and its most indelible image remains the conclusion of that shower scene, truly one of the iconic shots in screen history (underscored by Bernard Herrmann’s brilliant score in a way that’s both understated and powerful at once). Vera Miles, John Gavin and Martin Balsam also are in the cast.

Perhaps also a bit inspired by Cohn, Garvin’s artwork has grown in scale with his vision. ough Garvin admits he’s not savvy with computers, he has turned to technology to accomplish his goal of creating larger pieces, purchasing a scanner that allows him to blow up cut-out images to four or ve times their original size or make images from found objects like his favorite quilt.

“You’re kind of con ned with collage to what you can nd in books,” Garvin said. “Blowing them up and making them larger has been really fun and opened up more opportunity for me.”

Upping the scale provides more physical space for manipulation and experimentation. is has allowed Garvin to better explore new textures and materials.

Plus, he said, “ ey’re just more striking.”

Garvin began creating collages nearly six years ago, a date he remembers because it coincides with when he decided to get sober. Playing with a new art form provided an activity that could keep him busy at home and away from bars.

“It still doesn’t have meaning,” the artist said of the name. “But I don’t really think my art does either. Most of it is just aesthetic. I enjoy the process of it more than the nal product. It’s more about the whole journey. I enjoy thrift shopping. I enjoy nding frames. I enjoy nding pieces that will t together and colors I like with it.”

While Garvin will on rare occasions make a piece for a certain reason, he doesn’t try to impose a larger understanding on its viewers.

“I just want bright colors and fun things people can connect without it being like this heavy statement,” he said.

“It was kind of therapeutic digging through books and looking at old images and trying to think of how you can turn something that is someone else’s point of view into your own,” he said.

Garvin started with cats. A lover of our feline friends, he had acquired a number of books with cat pictures on thrifting adventures. He now has more than 80 such books, many gifts in homage to Garvin’s internet moniker Sex the Cat. e name has “no signi cance,” according to Garvin, but the structure was inspired by road-trip conversation on the way to see Portugal the Man at the Wilma in Missoula. Something the something became Sex the Cat, drawing on recurring themes in Garvin’s subject matter.

Garvin, a Michigan native who friends describe as “the best human,” moved to Montana in 2010 to apprentice with glass blower Mike Conrad. But after more than a decade working as Dusty Diamond Glass, the physical art form was becoming painful, exacerbating Garvin’s carpal tunnel. Surgery was an option, his doctor said, but it was expensive and not guaranteed to x the problem. And after 13 years on a torch, making glass wasn’t fueling Garvin’s creativity.

“I kind of hit a wall,” he said. “It just felt like a job.”

In May 2022, Garvin gave up glassblowing full time, keeping a studio for dabbling and taking a job outside of the arts. Cutting back on glass blowing has opened up an opportunity for him to focus more on his collage art. So when the property that housed Garvin’s glass studio sold in September, glass supplies were relegated to storage. Looking to the future, Garvin would like to nd a studio space, perhaps to accommodate both glass and paper craft.

“I just like exploring any art that I can, keeping an open mind and trying to combine arts,” Garvin said.

Framber Valdez takes the mound as staff ace in Houston

If ever there was a team that could afford to lose a Cy Young winner like Justin Verlander, it’s the Houston Astros.

Indeed, the ‘Stros rode a talented pitching young staff through the postseason to an 11-2 record, culminating with their second World Series championship in five years. But now as the 2023 season gets going with Verlander gone to the Mets in free agency, there must be a new ace on the hill at Minute Maid Park. Submitted for your consideration: Framber Valdez.

Lost in Verlander’s dominant return from Tommy John surgery in 2022 was the emergence of the 29-year-old lefty as a legitmate force. His numbers were stellar: a 17-6 won-lost record with a 2.82 ERA, 194 strikeouts and only 67 walks in 201.1 innings for a WHIP of 1.16.

In the postseason, he was even better, going 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four postseason starts, including 2-0 in the World Series. Additionally, he placed fifth in Cy Young voting and was the winning pitcher in the All-Star Game.

Now as the clear No. 1, the Dominican says he’s ready to shoulder the load as staff ace. With that usually comes pressure, but Valdez says it’s something he welcomes.

“Obviously, we have a lot of great pitchers and I want to try to be the guy to lead those guys,” he said. “I feel very responsible for that. I know there will be a little weight to carry, but it’s something I’m willing to do.”

Valdez will likely be on the mound at Minute Maid Park when the Astros open the 2023 regular season against the Chicago White Sox Thursday, March 30, on ESPN.
