All voices deserve to be heard. Many BGCML youth report that their voices are not being heard. We advocate for young people and provide them with safe spaces to express themselves in an intentional and use effective manner. We help kids and teens find and s their voices, and teach them to be tolerant of voice that that are different from their own. We show them their opinions, feelings, and perspectives matter. The 2019 Arconic STEM Day was filled with excitement, new friendships, and rockets! 38 BGCML youth filled the cafeteria to join Arconic Interns to build their own personal rockets before each team headed outside to launch their rockets high up in the air!”

Summer Brain Gain A summer learning loss prevention program developed specifically for Boys & Girls Clubs to integrate into their traditional summer schedule to stay on track for the upcoming school year. It consists of modules with fun, themed activities for elementary school, middle school and high school students that are aligned with common core standard. Power Hour Provides homework help, tutoring and high-yield learning activities and encourages members to become self-directed learners. Designed specifically to help kids and teens with homework, this program is available after school at all BGCML sites. W hen homework is finished, they may choose to participate in a variety of other engaging and educational activities to develop their skills even further. BGCML programs help youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills to participate in the democratic process. Program participants also develop leadership skills and gain opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community and celebrating our national heritage KEYSTONE CLUB Kaylie O. joined BGCML in 2015 and has been a passionate, engaged, and eager member from the beginning. Kaylie took on a new challenge in 2019 and became the founding president of BGCML’s Muskegon Covenant Academy’s Teen Zone Keystone Club. GIRL SCOUTS BGCML’s partnership with Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore has helped Club girls become a part of an expansive female-led program. In 2019 girls earned a wide array of badges including STEM, Financial Literacy, and Community Involvement. The 2019 cookie sale gave the girls a lesson of financial literacy, and the importance of needs vs. wants. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM BGCML is committed and in position to bridge the gap between young people and meaningful employment. It is no secret that youth who gain work experience while they’re in high school are less likely to drop out and more likely to graduate than those who don’t. In addition, gaining early exposure to the world of work is a key predictor that a teen will be consistently employed in adulthood. Supporting youth so they can develop 21st century skills – and a clear vision for their future career goals – is essential to helping them realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

We empower Club members to make healthy choices for immediate and long-term health benefits of mental health, competitive sports, and adventure sports. Our healthy lifestyle programs focus on several building blocks: healthy eating, exercise, nutrition, mental health, and competitive and adventure sports. Through health education, BGCML teaches and reinforces good habits to ensure Club youth grow into happy and healthy adults. Healthy Habits and Wellness These programs develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors to nurture their well-being, set personal goals and grow into self-sufficient adults.

Youth Hockey Program Thanks to the City of Muskegon five BGCML members joined a local hockey team! The youth learned how to ice skate, about teamwork, and that their actions held consequences-both good and bad. Dan Rinsema and Frank Peterson were volunteer coaches for the team and we want to say thank you! For not only coaching, but also volunteering to give Club kids rides to practice and game days! Adventure Sports The Adventure Sports program gives Club kids the opportunity to explore fun, and exciting adventures throughout the community. Youth have participated in adventure sports including ski lessons at Mulligan’s Hollow Ski Bowl, swimming lessons at the MCC Lakeshore Fitness Center, Ice Skating at Mercy Health Arena, Snowshoeing at the Muskegon W inter Sports Complex, and Bowling at Sherman Bowling Center!
